Previously flashed cognition 4.5.3 which was great, then flashed cognition 5 beta 2 and had the death screen at the begging of the boot, market does not download any apps, and every restart it thinks it is the first time booting. Odin recovery won't pick it up in download mode and the recovery mode is the att world phone screen. I am trying to get it back to stock, back to 4.5.3, or just out of cognition beta 2, any help would be greatly appreciated.

What is the process you're using to get to the download and recovery modes? Also, did you go back to stock before flashing the Beta?
I went right from cognition 4.5.3 and flashed beta 2, I have been manually getting into download mode by using button combinations as well as using phone options from holding the power button down
For future reference, you should pretty much always go back to stock before trying out a new ROM. (Unless otherwise stated by the dev).
Anyway, try this and see what you get. I've used this method countless times when I've thought I had bricked (soft bricked?) my Captivate.
Download mode
0. Make sure you have Odin open on your computer but don't have the phone connected.
1. Take everything out (Battery, SIM, MicroSD)
2. Put in the battery
3. Hold both of the volume buttons and plug in the USB cable to your computer. (Don't press the power button at all). The phone should now enter Download Mode and Odin should see it.
4. Flash back to stock.

Do as the post above stated, but next time read the guides on the roms. Cog 5 is based off KF1 and the gingerbread bootloaders, and 4.5.3 is a Froyo 2.2 rom. Always flash back to stock.

So yesterday i flashed Cognition 2.2 Beta 6 on my Cappy, and then a friend flashed 2.1 Voodoo. So now i have Ryan's OCLF running and Voodoo 2.1. Whenever i start my phone up it just goes straight to recovery mode, then when i click reboot now it still goes to recovery. Tried using the 1 Click Return to Stock thing but my phone doesn't go into Download mode either. People this is my only phone... Please help... Oh and if you can't help me do you guys think ATT will return my phone?

while in recovery, your phone will still respond to adb. simply "adb reboot download" will get you there.
NEVER EVER flash a 2.1 kernel when you a running a 2.2 firmware.
Where do i download ADB? and how exactly do i use this command line?
It's part of the Android SDK.
h t t p://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html (take the spaces out, I can't link yet).
You install the software, connect your phone by USB, open a command prompt, CD to <install folder>\tools, then type "adb reboot download".
If you can't get ADB to work.. you might want to try this trick,
Pull your Battery, Sim, External SDCard.
Hold down both Volume Buttons at the same time.
While holding down the button - put in your USB Cable
Jam the battery back in and the yellow triangle "should" pop-up.
Might take a few times to do it, but if you have your buddy with you (you know the guy who tried bricking your phone?) it should go into d/l mode.

I don't think AT&T would replace your phone because you messed up flashing it. This voids your warranty.
There are a few ways to force download mode. Try avgjoegeek's method, it should work.
If the 3-button method doesn't work, you may be SOL. I had to return my phone that did not allow the 3-button method to work. It is a pretty common issue. Everyone should check to make sure their phone will go into recovery and download mode before flashing ROMs. This issue should be stated more in the ROM sections.
Good luck!
Hello, been lurking a long time, reading a long time, but now it seems I need to reach out for help.
I have searched and read through many many posts and still cannot get my captivate to enter download mode. Ive read posts that say its unbrickable and others that say if its got a soft brick your toast.
Currently no matter what I do i am constantly stuck at the "phone---!---pc" screen.
Ive tried the vol+ and pwr, vol- and pwr, vol- and vol+ and pwr, middle vol button and pwr, all three vol buttons and power. Ive tried every variation of releasing and holding different buttons after a power cycle. Nothing seems to work.
Ive also tried making a jig. Ive got a micro usb plug ive chopped up, soldered on (3) 100k ohm resistors - no go. Tried (3) 100k and (1) 1k - no go. The value jumps between 295k ohms to 300k ohms. Does it need to be 301k exactly? That would require more than (3)100ks as they are usually +/-5%.
Backstory: was running stock, flashed to Cognition 3.02. Didn't have any issues with cog, just decided to try something different. Decided to go with Serendipity 4.1.
Used odin (I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0, the only one i could find, all the links are dead) to flash back to stock. Stock ran fine for the 10 minutes it was on there.
Then used the one click root
downloaded rom manager, used rom manager to add clockwork.
Used clockwork to enter recovery mode
installed from zip (serendipity 4.1) - this failed the first time and it took me quite a while to re-enter download mode.
After serendipity was flashed it would consistently lock up around the 2min mark.
Got back into download mode via clockwork/rom manager in attempt to use odin again. This is where it all fell apart. Odin froze the first time around, pulled battery, did the whole show again. Flash attempt #2 failed again also. This is where I am currently at. Now all ive got is the ----!---- screen and nothing seems to work.
Am I toasted? Or is there something I simply missed during my grief stricken panic after being without a phone for 2 days.
Search jig go to radio shack
Same recommendation as above poster.
Go to Radioshack, spend a $1 and get it done.
Did it just this morning.

What build is your phone, located under battery, mine is 1008
Just got it working.
I had made several jigs earlier. Followed several youtube videos and still couldnt get it. I had to fine tune it to 301k ohms exactly. Required about 5 resistors. Using three 100k ohm resistors did not work...
(model 1008 also)

I had the same issue, if you used that version of odin and you have a 1012 version of the phone then that's what caused the issue. I am on xda app so I cannot look through my posts, but click on my name and look at the posts and you will find some in a thread about brinking and I told some details that might help.

So whats the best thing to do here?
Your saying I cannot use Odin to revert to stock, I must use froyo 2.2. any other 2.2 rom (or something more specific)?
Or is it something to do with Serendipity?

If you are build 1008 you should be able to use odin, try another rom
Easy
1. Pull battery out.
2. Put battery in.
3. Hold volume buttons.
4. Plug in the usb cable.
5. Done.
Jordan, that wont work if he is in a restart loop like I was. The only way to get it working is to make a jig with 3 100k watt resistors and jig pins 4 and 5. Once it is in download mode, flash to froyo if you have a 1010 or higher version phone (This can be found under the battery, my version is 1012). If you have an older version then you can flash back to stock. There is an odin flasher that will flash you to froyo, I will just have to look for it.
I personally use paragonrc3 myself and it works great. My issue was very similar to yours. Once you get it in dl mode, try out stock froyo and see if it works. If that does then you can most likely use any up to date ROM.

I was able to get into download mode, it had to be 301k exactly.
I tried it again and my phone does not like Serendipity 4. Serendipity hangs completely and every time around the 2 1/2min mark. I went back to Cognition.
Version 1008, originally the 3 buttons and the usb cable worked, then they didn't, and now they still don't. But I've got the jig now so eh.
My phone will not turn on. I was doing a factory reset, but it seemed to freeze, so I did a battery pull. Now my phone is either stuck on the samsung logo, or an empty batter symbol with a white circle. Please help.
Only thing I can think of is to try to get into download mode (remove the battery, plug the phone into a computer, and press the volume down button). If you can get to download mode, you should be able to flash a stock rom via Odin (instructions for this can be found in multiple threads on this forum.

Yes, do that.
download odin and the stock 2.1 build. then place your phone in download mode. flash the rom the way the instructions tell you too. then walk into your local uscell and complain til they give you a new mesmerize. that should solve all your probs
Got mine to reboot
i got my samsung mesmerize to turn on by pressing in the startup button on the right AND the volume control button on the left (up, don't know if that matters) at the same time for a few seconds (at least 5) and eventually the SAMSUNG logo appeared and it is now working fine.
I hope this helps anyone who has the same issue!
lately EVERY time i reboot my phone (running ics build 2, 3 and 4, stock kernel) it gets stuck on samsung logo.. somehow my phone will only boot into the frigging cm7 recovery which as im sure youre all aware is rather useless to fix any problems im having in ics and leaves me unable to flash, backup, or restore anything. it's quite frustrating and i have no idea how to fix it but by going back to bml, re-partitioning, then odin ei20 modem, cm7 fixed recovery, then flash back to ics but doin this every reboot it getting very tedious..
ive read about recovery loops, but the fix doesnt work for me as i cant mount the ICS /system partition in cm7 recovery...and ive been all over trying a zillion things to get it to work and havent pulled dmesg or logcat but if someone thinks it would be useful ..i wish i knew why EVERYTHING is great, then BANG, reboot and it's FML city.
This is for the people who got a new captivate through return or purchase or how ever you obtained it. If you tried flashing a new rom and now are stuck at the att boot loop or the battery loop and your phone will not boot up here is help.
1. See if your phone will do the 3 button recovery to get into download mode.
2. If you cant get into download mode you might need a Jig or do the resistor technique to get into download mode.
3. See if this odin (I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0.exe) will flash your phone back to the stock 2.1.
4. If after flashing the 2.1 odin and your phone still has boot loop then try the 2.2 stock odin
5. Next do the same as previous but try with this odin (I897UCJI6-OCD-REV02-Low-designgears_1_.exe) which is the 2.2 stock odin.
Note all of these flashes require you to be in download mode and have odin fired up on your pc the plug in your phone so odin can recognize it so
a. be in download mode (not connected to PC)
b. have odin open on pc
c. Plug in phone to pc and start odin.
odin likes to stop flashing when setting pit file so if it freezes give a sec and if nothing try it again.
if odin freezes on the set pit file your phone will have the dreaded phone to pc icon during boot but dont panic set your phone into download mode and try again.
If any questions should arise PM me or leave a comment and others and i will try and help.
Took me two days to fix my phone after flashing to stock to root it but i hope this helps you turn your 400 dollar paper weight back into a phone.
umm thanks but we know how to use odin there are a million guides in every ginerflash and captivate sticky.
and the 2.2 odin is actually an internal samsung beta 2.2 not official.
returning it with the designgears 2.2 will be an obvious warranty breach if they notice.
and your Step 4 and 5 seem to say the same thing... "flash 2.2 odin" (which isnt official)
and THE REAL FIX FOR THE BOOTLOOP:
reboot into RECOVERY > (not download)
wipe cache and data! (or factory reset)...
DONE!
reboot into the rom that you were trying to use!
takes 20 seconds and no reflashing anything.
i ran into this a few days ago while trying to root a friends captivate(1008) purchased from walmart recently. after trying to flash back to stock i was stuck on att boot loop and could not get into download mode via button combo to save my life. tried everthing minus a jig....after getting fed up with it, i sat it aside. to my amazment, after about 10-15 minutes the mf booted up. i had to use adb to reboot into download mode. flashed with odin(from aio toolkit) back to 2.1. everything worked fine, no problems except for one thing...sometimes it will still loop for a few minutes before it boots...sometimes it boots right away. Im still investigating the whole ordeal but my point here is: if you think your phone is stuck on att screen, just let it sit for a while....maybe a long while. and it should boot. then use adb to get back to download mode. i read every forum post on the web about this issue...just found this thread and thought id give ppl a heads up. hope it helps
I'm stuck in a bootloop right now on the Galaxy S animation screen and this wipe cache and data method doesn't seem to work for me.
so i recently tried flashing a darky rom theme onto my captivate running mosaic 8.
it worked the first time. then i tried another theme didnt like it, so flashed the darky rom one, and now, bootloop....
i can get my cappy into download mode, but odin doesn't recognize it.
i cannot get it into recovery mode with holding down the volume up and down and power button.
i need help
--edit--
fixed!
biggest help i have EVER had in custom roms/rooting etc..

i have yet to see anyone say "delete" the recovery file. it is always "overwrite". regardless, put your phone into download mode. you are doing it wrong. try again until you get it right.
remove the battery. leave it off for 10 seconds. put it back in. press and hold the two volume buttons at the same time. then plug in the usb cable that is connected to your computer. odin should be running already. i would follow gb start pack from here.
i turned of the phone and held the volume down button and the power button, letting go of the power once the turn on screen came up. i was trying to flash the leaked android 2.3.5 for the galaxy s 4g
please read my previous post carefully. i never said to press the power button at all.
OKAY, dwld mode is volumes plus USB cable, never failed me, even when I failed a flash through odin/heimdall and just maybe a yellow pixel or even nothing shows up.
If it flashes it is dwld. The GS4g has absolutely no junk bootloader witthout proper download mode unlike other galaxies.
PS. Who else wants a Galaxy Nexus?
What is the tmobile warranty policy, I know if there is a problem with your phone even due to damage, the warranty covers it for replacement after paying contract price, but do they allow a change of phone eg instead of paying 99 or 139 for another gs4g, get a galaxy nexus for 199?
My phone works, but after it fell, it overheats and loses battery. I even got a free new battery, and I even went back to stock KD1 for a while, no difference.
So, I did what you said, and i got into download mode, no problem. but when i tried to flash with odin it just said fail.. any suggestions?
Although the square window might say "Fail" there's a status window in the bottom left-hand side of ODIN that should give you more information. What does that window say when you try to flash?
It said succesful 0/ failed 1. I tried to reboot my phone and now it won't turn on at all...
It sounds like your boot loaders are hosed.
Keep ODIN open & use the battery-pull method to see if it'll go into download mode (the screen might still be black, but see if ODIN recognizes it).
If it does:
Download chadster's KG4: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1183413
Put CODE_T959VUVKG4_CL138158_REV00_user_low_noship.tar.md5 in PDA
Put Hawk_Sidekick_VibrantPlus_831.pit in PIT
Put SGH-T959V-CSC-TMB-VIBRANT.tar.md5 in CSC
Put T959VUVKG4-Phone-CL1037720.tar.md5 in PHONE
Let ODIN decide what boxes need to be checked and flash. That will get you booted up on GB with the proper boot loaders.
Try the Unbrickable Mod in the dev section. Brought mine back today. I had a Bright WHITE screen. lol
NO BOOT
After flashing this kernel> sms-T959V-KJ6-antsvx.v1.1.3 my Galaxy S4G will not boot AFTER restoring my backup using CWM 5.0.2.8. My phone runs perfect with the stock rom and this kernel. ONLY after restoring does it NOT boot.
Can someone shine some light on this situation?
You need to restore using the kernel you made the back up from. You can then flash the new kernel over the restored back up.

---------- Post added at 05:06 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:42 PM ----------
Thanks much Lumin30. Had to read your post sloooow and figure it out, and I got it. I flashed the stock+Voodoo-T959VKJ1 in Odin and it booted right up
then flashed the sms-T959V-KJ6-antsvx.v1.1.3 kernel in CWM. Im good to go now.
This has happened to me 2 other times can you suggest why? The other times I restored phone back to factory :crying:.
Still not booting AFTER restoring cwm backup
I always attempt to restore a backup that I have made using cwm as a test. Im trying to restore using the same kernel I made the backup with. When I proceed the full restore appears to go through (I get "restore complete" message in CWM v.5.0.2.8), but when I click on "reboot system now" my phone goes ONLY to the Samsung screen and stays there.
I have restored my phone to stock about 5 times carefully re-rooting and flashing the kernel with the stock firmware. Now, I have AntonX Barebones and Basic with a twist kernel installed, they work perfectly! But I CANNOT boot AFTER restoring a full backup, unless I use Odin. Can someone help me to address and fix the cause?
Edit> I was able to restore and boot up automatically a backup using CWM 5.0.2.8 of AntonX's Barebones Rom with bhundven's Blastoff 2.5 kernel. Dont know why it restored and booted properly this time but this is what I did:
I made a fresh backup of Barebones with Blastoff because I wanted to try Valhalla Black (nice ROM). I flashed it first using the "generic" install and checked through its features then wanted to see how the "custom" install felt. I decided I liked Barebones better and flashed the Blastoff kernel onto Valhalla Black, Then booted into CWM and restored my Barebones with Blastoff backup. Without wiping anything or fixing permissions my backup was fully restored and my phone booted properly on its own. I know this is what should happen, but it wasnt for me. And every time I attempted this I was restoring using the same kernel that the backup was made with. I restored twice since just to test it and both times my phone booted on its own. I believe my problemo is solved. It is possible I had a couple of bad downloads on my part with AntonX Basic with a twist 1.1.3
