I'm still waiting to see when my Inspire will get the update. Is there a way to install this or upgrade faster?
I'm not interested in rooting... yet, so at&t supposedly letting me install non market apps was a great thing, but now not having the promised option is starting to bother me a little bit.
Any ideas or inside info?
Thanks.
All I did was go on the website and do the online chat thing with an ATT rep. Asked her about it and she sent me the update. Got a little pop-up asking if I wanted to do the update. Hit yes and it was done.

I'm still waiting on that update, but I have absolutely no desire to call up AT&T.
Those darn fools tried to send a technician into my home because THEY changed the password to my DSL service but didn't bother to tell me.
The problem I'm having is that I'm not in the States... so calling At&t is not an option for me.
It's weird that they don't have the upgrade for everyone by now.

I did have the same issue as you, im not from the US. I do have my HTC inspire for a week and a half now.
What i did the first days was use the Android central sideload Wonder Machine, that you can find in androidcentral forums. very good app and no need for root.
i did try first z4root, and did not work for me, on temporary or permanent root.
after that a few days ago i use superoneclick root app from here in XDA. Click in Root (that does not root permanently, just temporally) and then click on allow non-market apps. did a phone reboot, and voila no root but still can load non-market apps.
Hope this helps you.
Unfortunately I haven't been able to fix my issue.
I tried the superoneclick method, rooted temporarlily, but the option to Allow Non Market Apps never appeared.
It even failed when it tried to check the SU an FAILED.

The only way to remove those apps which are locked down by the carrier is to root your phone (whenever that comes out), and use titanium to remove/disable the apps.

Temp root it with visionary (search market) and use this method to disable apps:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/10/15/how-to-disable-system-apps-on-devices-with-nand-protection/
It won't delete the apk but will disable it from running and clogging up resources. They also won't show up anymore in the launcher. I've temp rooted my mytouch 4g just fine using visionary just haven't gotten around to run all the scripts to remove all the bloatware yet.
Install Visionary for temp root, then install Titanium Backup, click problems and say yes to download Busybox. After that click backup/restore and from there you can remove any app PERMANTLY! Hope this helps =)
Don't they just reappear the moment you reboot?

You actually REMOVED the app and it came back? Oh man that's some crazy lockdown.
It's nuts that the phones are locked down now. The only people who will "accidentally" break them are people who know what they're doing (and those who are willing to take a risk). I can't believe HTC/T-Mo when they say this is a preventative measure. Which smart person will boot up the phone while holding the vol down key and wipe their phone? They'll get scared and pull the battery!

If this is really the way it's going to be, then they must have had a business case for taking those measures. These companies are out to make money, not to make toys for the homebrew community.
My guess is that they were getting more returns/exchanges than they were comfortable with. I mean, let's be honest here. How many of us know folks who have returned a bricked device saying "it just stopped working?" I personally know people who have tried rooting/moding phones without the least bit of knowledge of how it all works. I know because I'm the one getting calls to help out...
When that **** happens, TMO ends up in a difficult position. They're not going to call their customers liars, and they can't refuse to exchange the phone.
I wish they would give people an option to "buy" root. You pay $25 for an unlock, and your warranty is immediately and automatically voided. That way, only people who know what they're doing will sign up for it.

Can you confirm that you did a full reboot after this removal method (vs just down to a 'quick' reboot) and that they stayed gone?
Why do you guys want to completely remove something? Why not just disable it? Same effect.... You will never need more space in /system/app since you can't even write to that and if you disable it - it's gone from the launcher and does not hog memory/cpu. And you can re-enable it in case you want to use it again.
Look here for directions (thanks to Paul O'Brien)

I have no idea why it didn't work. I did exactly what the instruction said. Nothing changed, I'm assuming it doesn't work for the myTouch4G.
myTouch4G (Glacier)
Let me clear this up for everyone. What the OP (or 2nd 3rd post?) suggested does not work permanently. I have both a G2 and a myTouch 4G, they have the exact same read-only system memory.
The major difference between the G2 and the myTouch 4G, and why the OP thinks this works, is because the myTouch has fast boot. With this enabled (and it was on mine by default) you can turn "off" the phone and turn it back on without loosing root, or in this case, having apps magically reappear.
However, if you actually REALLY turn OFF the phone, either by disabling fast boot or simply removing your battery, they are going to come right back. The only permanent solution is to disable them, and you can find Paul's post in the G2 forums about how to do that using a terminal with root access.

Personally, I would wait for CM or another rom to come out. Video chat will probably be optimized (among other things) in those roms anyway and there is no telling what this will do to root. It may "fix" root and plug up the exploit so that you are back at square one again.

I was wondering about that also. If it was to plug a hole, it will become evident if those with the 2nd OTA find that the s=off and/or the rooting itself procedures no longer work. And then there is tethering....
Would TMo be that mean ???
If you make a backup using Clockwork, could you just reflash to get back to where you were if the new OTA takes away root?
If it's just a Qik update, can Qik from the new version be pulled from it and then installed on a phone without the newest OTA?
no because you need root to nandroid your phone
Only one update. If you have 2.2.1 thats the update for qik and some bugs; I got the email from HTC in their monthly news email.

Just ask them to push the Sideloading update to your phone. If they don't know what they are doing, then their customer support must be terrible.
your welcome works on my att inspire 4g. it will prompt for update. the update works without issue.
So there are people who have had success with att doing this then huh? I've called 3 different reps and no one could find anything. This is for my girlfriend's phone who does not want it rooted but one of the main selling points over the atrix was having the appstore.
I posted this in two other threads but both got ignored.
As soon as I updated to the 2.3.5, tethering seems to be no longer supported. The option is there, but as soon as I activate the tether, 3G goes away. I have to turn off the tether, then manually switch mobile data off and on just for my 3G to come back.
Is this their way of getting people to finally pay for it?
Yes.. one of the features of the update was removing tether if you were not paying for it. No biggie though... you have a Nexus.. just unlock it and download one of the apps off the market.

I am a little confused why Google allowed sprint to do this. Whether you you use the tether or not and regardless of how easy it is to get it back it doesn't sit well with me that Sprint is calling the shots with this phone now. One of the major appeals of this phone is the pure Google experience, which is now the partial Google experience. I wonder if this had anything to do with the delay of the OTA, maybe sprint was holding out until google let them kill the tether? Anyways, it doesn't instill a great amount of confidence in google for this phone and future nexus devices. I still like the phone and there is nothing on sprint I would rather have, I'm just a little pissed at how they tucked this into an update that was much anticipated and stripped some of our "pure googleness".
I don't understand this...i dont pay anything extra for tether, and i can still tether on stock 2.3.5. Why are some people unable?
i just flashed the new KE5 radio(found in the ns4g dev section), and im not seeing any issues. still on 2.3.4 tho.. i dont see any reasons to update to 2.3.5 especially if this is a problem. i tether wayyyy too much.

I don't understand this...i dont pay anything extra for tether, and i can still tether on stock 2.3.5. Why are some people unable?

So I have a two day new Nexus S and I did the manual update last night. Now when activating the mobile hotspot the 3g or 4g icons go away and it does not have connectivity anymore.
Now, I have read conflicting info about whether this is happening just to those who did the manual update and if you did OTA it still works. Can anyone confirm this?
If that is the case, then I need to return this one and get another and just be more patient next time to get the update officially OTA. =)
Not that I am tremendously worried about the tethering/hotspot being free, but I am uneasy that doing this manually may have screwed things up in as of yet other unknown ways. Like if I do pay for hotspot/tethering someday it might still not work right, etc.
Thanks!

Did you manually update or did you wait for it to be pushed to your phone? I'm stock and wasn't rooted and I manually updated and my tethering both usb and wifi hotspots are not working.
Also I notice in the kernel version that it's longer than when I was on 2.3.4 mine says 2.6.35.7-g3cc95e3 [email protected] #1
Is that normal?
