Interesting conversation with an HTC tech support rep. - HTC Sensation

1st I am not sure if this has been posted (I haven't seen it) but the info under running apps only shows about 508mb of RAM, and about half of it is used for system and background running apps. The Htc rep told me that the approx 260mb that does not show up, is used for the OS. This means out of the 768,MB of advertised RAM, there is usually not more than about 250-300 mb free to use.
He also told me that not only did other stores start selling the phone early, but so did t-mobile, and that they were not supposed to have put it out for sale until the 3rd week of June.
He said that because of this, many of the htc reps have not properly finished their training on the sensation and although htc usually has about an average of a 10 day from release to first patch, they have been having to scramble because of the premature release.
He confirmed that an unlocked bootloader is coming but would not give any indication of time.

I spoke to a tech rep the other day just asking if my warranty would still be valid since it was an import and the last question I asked her was about the bootloader.. she said that there was no word about when an update would come yet. She did say they got the notice that new HTC phones released after the summer will have the unlocked bootloaders. She did say she would assume they would issue some kind of update for the sensation and evo 3d but she didnt know details. She actually joked and said all the techs cringed when they got that notice because they knew it would be a warranty nightmare (translation: all the noobs calling in with bricked phones filing warranty exchanges/repairs) We both agreed it should be a little work to unlock it just so every tom, **** and harry couldnt do it and cause more harm to the device then good.

nice, so hopefully an update sometime around the third week of june maybe? hopefully......hopefully

Absolutely ridiculous. No wonder Rosie has to reload itself every time you exit out of an app.

When I ordered my phone over the weekend, the rep I talked to said that his group was trained on the phone the day before release and he was off that day. When he got in the next day (release day), he got tons of calls on the phone and he didn't have proper knowledge of the phone or its capabilities... but he knows it's an awesome phone.

seriously ram is not an issue with this phone for me. I have tons of things running and services in the background and I have 236MB of free ram available (according to settings, applications, running)
task manager shows less though and I heard is not as accurate. task manager shows 92mb free watchdog reports 21588kb free
The OS does take up some ram of the 768. You get to use 558mb of that. That's what my system tells me is the total available ram. Honestly my G2X only has 512 and I NEVER have ram issues with that. I think most phones reserve ram for the system. I'll check my g2x to see if the full 512 is available or if the OS takes some up. I always have 85-95mb free on that. Someone said once here on xda If you constantly have around 100mb free when you're doing everything you normally do, it's pretty much wasted ram..
as long as I have 100 mb free or close to that I feel secure

Some of the RAM is reserved for GPU (not for OS).

People..........stop with the RAM analysis. Look at the ps3, it only has 256mb RAM and the seperate GPU is also 256mb. We're good.

T-Mobile working on G2x software fix, Gingerbread coming by summer

http://www.bgr.com/2011/05/26/t-mobile-working-on-g2x-software-fix-gingerbread-coming-by-summer/
Let's see what the outcome will be.
Didnt we know this already? Isnt there a thread dedicated to this?
Like I said when I posted this link half an hour ago, summer is less than a month away! Though a few bug fixes would be nice before then...
I wonder if the phone will remain "out of stock" until the update?
T-Mobile said. “As with any new device, a small percentage of customers have commented about possible improvements and we are working with LG to deliver a software update, which we expect to offer some performance issues.”

T-Mobile may issue this fix at the same time it rolls out its planned Android Gingerbread update, which the carrier announced will occur sometime before summer.
Summer starts June 21st or something. So "before June 21st".
That's how I read it. Note they didn't say "during" or "over" summer.
this is tmobile we are dealing with and you know how the updates for froyo with the vibrant went. yes i know this is not samsung but you have to think it is tmo and it is possible that they didnt want to release it so i will wait until the end of summer when we will possible get it. so do not come on here on june 21 or whenever the beginning of summer and expect to have gb on your phone that's not how tmobile works.

Yes, but in this case a lot of customers are waiting for an update to make their $500 phones work. T-Mo and LG have some serious incentive to get an update out ASAP.
EDIT: If I have to wait more than a month or so for a basic bug-fix update I may look into a full refund under lemon laws or whatever.

yes that's true it is the companies fault but as you know if lg, htc etc sends tmobile gb with free tethering or something similar then tmobile will most definitely send that version back until the company fixes it or until tmobile can block the feature and they will also have to be able to put their bloatware on the phone so it is tmo fault if say lg releases gb on june 1 and tmobile doesnt get it out until aug because they want to bloat it up with crap.

Oh yeah! you mean the unfinished GB? I can totally see how that's ready for mass production updates. >.> yeah bro. Again I see exaggerated time tables and to much blame put on Carriers. They're the necessary evil don't get be wrong but their involvement is minimal compared to what you all believe, slapping on"non removable" bloatware onto the Software is more simple than you give them credit for. Agreed options like free wifi are obvious rejected versions but that doesn't result in multi month extensions.

T-Mobile/LG releasing G2X information in a Few Days (not another rumor thread)

check tmo news.com right now.....unable to post link!
LG has continued to stick to it’s message of working fast and furious to push out a T-Mobile G2x Gingerbread update that contains various bug fixes. The problem is right now their message is something along the lines of “we know you are frustrated and we’re understanding so we hope to have some information to tell you soon.” What’s soon? Is it two days or two weeks as it’s already been a month that the G2x has been gone from T-Mobile.com. The time to tell us something has come and gone, now we’re moving into impatience.
Tonight’s information shows that LG hopes to deliver some information about the update in the next few days but not necessarily the update itself. As you can see in the Tweet above there is no indication that the “next few days” means an actual software release. So G2x owners are stuck playing the waiting game yet again. While I understand that neither T-Mobile nor LG wants to give a target date and miss it, perhaps it’s better than not saying anything at all.
@theLGgirl
Maybe a light at the end of the tunnel? I won't hold my breath, but still...

That message does not sound good to me. I believe they are working hard on it but it almost sound as if there having some problems with it. Doesn't look good. Glad I have a bug free G2X because I don't think there fixing anything.

come on guys and or gals
they said its a strong focus and expeect news in a few days give them a breadk its not like its been 2 months already or something. you should believe them its not like they have been misleading you since prior to launch of the phone.
lg and tmobile are upstanding and wouldnt never lie about stock or anything.
oh hey by the way i have a great deal for the first lucky person to contact me.
i have this bridge i am selling real cheap. its not made by lg or on tmobile its a good deal.
While I love my g2x, I can honestly say that I have never seen such a high end phone get pulled so quickly. LG borked it bog time and now the consumers pay. So T-Mobile exchanges the phone for a lower specification phone and expects us to pay MORE money for the so called "upgrade" to the Sensation. Personally I am pissed how this has been handled!

A lot of the stores are selling them when they have been asked not to. Why? Stores have to meet sales metrics. If you have a new customer signing up and they want the G2x, would you really tell them no?

lol no stores have been "asked not to sell" g2x's.
I dont know where you guys get all this crazy info from.
I have not seen one official email telling myself, or any other store in my region to not sell G2X's. (although we havent been getting our stock replenished for about 3 weeks now. we still have 2-3 in stock, but due to the recent price hike no one is really interested in the phone)
Bro think logically here...if it was recalled and they continue to sell them, and someone with a buggy phone found that out and could prove it, don't you think T-Mobile would end up losing alot more money with all the legit lawsuits then they would eating the cost of the recalled and discontinued g2x? Once again it hasn't been recalled?

Hopefully by then, the SGS2 will be released on T-Mobile. This is ridiculous. They must have hired just one person PART-TIME working on this.

Ok guys so I might not seem "reputable" Ive always been more of an observer of the forums..instead of putting my 2cents in about everything..yes I work for a T-Mobile authorized dealer for the past 3yrs..4yrs @ Verizon b4 this.. every so often LG/Samsung/Nokia reps stop in.. today it was LG who I haven't seen since the g2x launch.. obviously I asked questions.. he told me that the g2x was written w/code for 2.3 to be updated soon after release.. the problem was the code was written wrong..and thats why the phone reboots..because it thinks theres an update so it shuts down..and it took an extremely long time to find where the problem was and write proper code.. they didn't want to take the chance of releasing an update without being 100% sure, obviously consumers wouldn't be happy with a faulty update..he continued to say it is absolutely a software issue..he also said the update will be in two parts.. the 1st is a software patch to fix the reboot issue and the 2nd is gingerbread. He took down my email address so he can send me the update when he gets it next week..so that way reps can test it out and start pushing it in stores.. in my opinion I don't see the update coming in the next few weeks to customers if an LG reps g2x isn't even updated yet..and is barely starting to roll out for reps to test out.. sorry for the long post..and once again..DONT SHOOT THE MESSENGER! Hopefully this update won't mess up with my non-reboot G2x.
Seems like baseband patch first and OS the next.

actually this makes sense.
1) people who have said their phones said there was an update after phone rebooted .. this has been mentioned several times so that part makes sense.
2) you are the second person from a different source today to mention an update for next week.
obviously its probably just getting to tmobile next week but at least thats something.
Let us know how it goes. if you dont see an internal update by next week than well know thats its probably not trust worthy. but what he said makes sense regarding the update stuff.

I can say my battery life appears to be better, no random reboots yet.
I've also previously experienced what I call hibernate which is where I have to press the power key 12 times to unlock the screen. Seems to run a bit smoother as well.
Problems so far are the camera sucks now. When the screen goes to standby after I load a webpage and I unlock the screen, it reverts to the previous page.
I have had a few occasions where I have had to click a link like 10 times to get data to load the page. That all I've notices so far within the 24 hours I've been running the update.

http://www.htc.com/us/support/sensation4g-tmobile/tech-specs/
any one know if they have the full 4 gig already on our phone but its hidden??
we already know the the sensation special edition has the same speed processor but does it already have the same memory but we just cant see it?
out of the box i had 1.04 avail internally. any one have something different?
I think sense takes 3 gigs or something like that.
I hear the operating system and other data take up space. But maybe that's not true. WHY IS MY WINDOWS INSTALLATION FOLDER 15 GB BIG? IT SHOULD TAKE NO SPACE AT ALL, RIGHT?
Yepp that's our phone we got 4GB but only 1 available for user application that's what I've read...hopefully CM7 will take care of that too

Well thanks for the answers, i my self cant wait for cm7 to come to us. I came from the hd2, only because the digitizer stopped working as usual on android installations, and it was the same price to replace the phone under insurance as it was to upgrade this phone...
I read its eMMC protected so we won't be able to access the rest of the 3 GB. It's reserved for system files and other crap.

Does the One S really have 1GB of RAM?

I see that I only have 685MB when I am looking at the apps running. I am sad I always have more than half of my RAM in use.
Yup... You have 1GB... Much of which is used by the OS. Wait until you see how much of your 16GB storage is available...

Yeah only 12 of it haha.
Well can I vent here? I'll vent here.
So I bought a phone off of some lady. $300. It was fresh. Initially it seemed like a good deal.
Everything was find up until 3PM today. My phone no longer connected to a network. After 8 hours of no service I called T-mobile from another phone and turns out my phone has been banned. I guess they lady that sold it to me stopped paying for the bills. Unless it was a scam from the start. Which it probably was. Now I have a $300 4.3" tablet.
Life is so bad for me, now. My Westone 3 just broke 2 months after warranty. College decided it wanted more money so I got 50% of my original grant. Governor Corbett sucks, btw.

If you call/visit T-Mobile they should unblock the device.

Why are you sad?
Unused ram is not necessarily a good thing.
Unused ram = wasted ram
No, I called T-Mobile and they would not/cannot unblock it. Its frustrating how they think its right. They charged the original owner the full price and then they destroy the phone. If then they compare it to repossession of a car. Yeah, except that car is still in circulation and fully working and they don't take then take the remaining money. T-mobile are idiots if they think that analogy is right. If they are going to charge the full price then that person should own it.
Ok I've been see this a couple time and I'm kinda tired of people being mad at T-Mobile for people trying to save money from a non-T-mobile source and the phone don't work. That lady either one did not pay off her equipment installment plan(so she did not own it) or she did a fault claim saying she lost the phone or just never sent the phone back on a warranty claim. If a person buys a phone straight out T-mobile will not block the imei number unless the phone is reported stolen and the owner makes them block the imei. I have friends that work at T-mobile. It is no different than Verizon or Sprint phones that are report lost or stolen now.

Of you know who the lady is, email, phone number, etc... File a report and take her to small claims court. Lemon law doesn't just apply to dealers and corporations... If someone rips you off, you have a right to a refund...

May be there's a way to add some RAM.
Was possible on Spica by using SWAP partition.

It "only" has 685 because the rest is used for gpu and other stuff, the 685 is for apps and services
