I am having an issue with sharing internet through USB tethering. I get a very small transfer rate that i'm not even able to load up speedtest.net to measure.
However on a wifi hotspot i get a moderately decent connection for a 3g region. I have looked at relevant forums and it doesn't seem anyone is having luck with this either.
I have an inspire 4g (no 4g coverage in my area)
provider: AT&T
ROM: Cyanogenmod 7.03
I am unsure of any additional info required but please don't hesitate to ask anything needed to know
Any help would be appreciated!
So this is what I found even though it talked about how to set this up for an EVO, its for any android device.Hope this works out for you.
First, head over to the Android Market and search for "PdaNet," or scan the barcode at right for instant access. Go ahead and install that bad-boy to your phone.
Now, on whatever computer you want to use for tethering, click over to the PdaNet Web site and download the companion PC program. You'll find options for Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Mac OS 10.5 and 10.6. The basic edition of the PdaNet PC utility is free, though if you need to access secure (https) Web sites during your tethering, you will have to spring for the paid edition.
Once you're ready to actually begin a tethering connection, you need to adjust one little setting on your phone: Tap your phone's Menu key and select Settings, then Applications, then Development. Now check the box that says "USB Debugging" and press "OK" when the confirmation box appears. This will allow the PdaNet app to directly stream data from your phone to your PC. Be sure to go back into this same menu and turn it off when you're done using the tethering function.
At this point, you're ready to plug your phone into your PC via USB. Once it's connected, run the PdaNet app on your phone and select the "Enable USB Tether" option on the program's main screen. (You'll also notice an option for Bluetooth-based connections; if your computer has Bluetooth capabilities, you can select this to connect to your PC wirelessly instead of using USB.)
The app will now tell you that it's on and running as a background service. Next, just head over to your PC and find the PdaNet icon. On Windows machines, it'll be a rectangular cell-phone-like symbol in your system tray. Right-click the icon and select "Connect" from the pop-up menu.
That's it -- you're done! Your PC is officially tethered to your EVO, and you should be able to surf the Web at will using your phone's 3G or 4G connection

Thank you for the help however the android market has blocked pdanet and i've tried looking on the google apps and amazon apps and can't seem to find it anywhere on even junefabrics.com for the android version.
any idea how i can get ahold of this app?
edit: nevermind i figured the client installs it directly to the phone. this does not seem to resolve my issue of how slow it is but i've come to the conclusion it's because i am also on a network (without internet access of course). The whole reason i wanted to use usb tethering instead of the wifi hotspot was so i could stay connected to this network and share my media. any ideas on how i can resolve this?
thank you

I have done the APN setup a few days ago and yes my setup is the same as yours. I think at this point it's come to an issue with my computer and not the tethering service. This is probably one of the few situations someone would have to remain connected on a wireless network and a connect to the internet with other means.
I cannot stream through the network as long as i receive any bandwidth from my phone and visa versa.
for now i'll just have to connect to my home network separately and disconnect my phone. If i come up with a solution i'll post. thank you for all your help CRYRAXDroid
hey no worries yeah if you do let me know that would be cool.

This thread shows how to channel your SD card through your wireless router, therefore making your SD card accessible from most devices (tested on PC, Android and iOS). Please note that your phone and the device must be connected to the same network.
1. Download and install File Expert (it's free) from the Android Market: https://market.android.com/details?id=xcxin.filexpert&hl=en.
2. Open File Expert and press the "Share" icon at the bottom of the screen.

3. Select "Enable WEB Sharing".
The IP and authentication info will be displayed. The URL (which is located in the third line) will be entered in the address bar of the browser in the other device. The username and password will also be required so please remember it ^_^
So on my phone it says "http://192.168.1.102:8080", so I type "http://192.168.1.102:8080" in the browser of another device.
Enter the password and done! You've accessed your phone's SD card from another device.
Please note:
1. This may not work on all devices, ranging from hosting the HTTP server to accessing the SD card from another device.
2. This may not work on all browsers as they may not have the specifications required to access the HTTP server.
3. The username/password can be changed in the File Expert settings or you can COMPLETELY disable any authentication.
3. The user and it's affiliates are NOT responsible for any damage caused physically and/or mentally
There are other apps in the Android Market that have the same function but I just use this. Suggestions are appreciated. Don't forget to 'Thank'
Wow... this rocks.. thank you for this.... God, i love tech... I just sent out a tweet to all
Cheers - very useful - the app came as part of the Gingerburst ROM I installed from Droidzone, so don't even have to install it
Hello!
This would be great, if it would work on my phone. Unfortunately it didn't. I tried it on an HTC Desire powered with MIUI, and after entering the URL in a browser of another android phone (and on a desktop comp), nothing happens. It may be a setting by me tho (probably on the router?), which I didn't find yet.
cheers!
Works great. Excellent app!
I have been using this File Manager App since I got my very first android phone. I don't know why people keep buying and recommending apps that work exactly the same way (or maybe even better for File Expert's case) but cost very high. Duh.
Great find, thanks
this also works using wifi tethering on the 1st mobile to create virtual hotspot and connect 2nd mobile to that hotspot
I tested that on 2 different cyanogenmod 7 devices
This is pretty slick. The current version also offers Bluetooth sharing support over OBEX FTP although that part is rather unstable on my laptop (crashes explorer for some reason). That isn't an issue with the app though. That's a known problem on my laptop that I don't know what's causing it.
I just tried this out - it looks great and the web sharing is incredibly easy to use, thanks!
Installed, and gonna try it tomorrow. I will leave you guys a feedback.

- I'm using WB-XPERIA TW Gingerbread Rom if that may account for anything

I have never came across this problem. You could try playing with the File Expert settings, enabling/disabling things and getting to a conclusion. It could be a problem with your ROM, your router or the compatibility with the app. I have noticed that the HTTP server closes when I change to another app (even though it says File Expert's still running). You could try using a different app from the market (there are loads), just type 'web sharing' in the Android Market and see what you get
You could try: https://market.android.com/details?id=nextapp.websharing&feature=search_result It has an awesome UI and easy to use
Hey guys im jumping over to the infuse forum to see if anyone may have any information on what may be going on with my moms phone. She has a Stock Infuse not rooted. and just last night she told me that after she rebooted her phone it wouldnt get any data. She could connect to wifi but she wouldnt get any data connection at all. So i went through all the normal stuff, rebooting again, battery pull, toggle airplane mode and nothing seemed to get it to connect at all. She took the phone to ATT today and they did a factory reset on the phone and everything and the phone still would not get data connection, swapped SIM cards, still no data connection. now shes having to get another phone. Does any of this sound right?? any ideas of what could have caused the phone to do this? and if i root and flash a custom ROM do you think i might have a chance at bringing that radio back to life?
EDIT: ATT said it could have been a virus... not sure if that would help either
Thanks in advance guys for any feed back.

This is for Bluegrass Cellular Showcase i500. It may also work for other Bluegrass Androids with MMS not sending or receiving.
Once you have installed a custom rom and everything except MMS is working properly. Follow these steps.
1. Open App Drawer - launch voice dialer.
2. Say open A P Ns - should popup Open APNs - select it.
3. Once in APNs - you may or may not have an APN listed - press menu - restore defaults.
4. If you have an APN listed - select it - if not then press menu and add new.
5. You should now see edit access point.

6. Set your settings just as mine are in the pictures above (or text below in case the pictures don't load)
7. Most important, if you want it to save and show up in the list of APNs - DO NOT CHANGE THE MCC OR MNC! IT SHOULD WORK WITH WHATEVER NUMBER IS ALREADY THERE. THIS IS WHY SO MANY PEOPLE HAVE TROUBLE SAVING THEIR APN SETTINGS, BECAUSE THEY CHANGE THESE TWO SETTINGS.

You can manually enter these settings. Go to the dialer and enter##83786633 then hit the home button, open the dialer again and clear what is there, then enter ##22745927, the SPC code is 000000 by default and then you can select to turn hidden menus on. Finally, go to the dialer again an enter ##3282#, and your in the manual data settings. I dont know any of this info, but if you do, please share

I may have the fix for alot of you Bluegrass cellular customers. In my case when I went to mobile networks under settings, There was no APN setting option. I activated a Verizon 4G Galaxy Nexus to my Bluegrass account. I downloaded "offline SIM APN Database" from the Play store. His app lets you input the apn settings even though it doesn't show up in settings. I used all the settings as listed on this thread, but like in my case I had no place to input them. Once you dowload the app (it has to be the PRO), select USA and Verizon. FYI You MUST delete all other APN presets in order for it to work. The app creator is Robert Soult. He is THE MAN!
I just wanted to let you know thanks for this! This helped fix my phone. And I also wanted you to know, I used this to make a script that fixes many MMS problems for Bluegrass Cellular. You can find it here...

Hi everyone,
it might be a stupid question but I was wondering if the Remote Desktop app could be used to access my laptop via internet.
I know it works very well when the Surface and the laptop are connected to the same Wireless router but I would like to know if th same as possible, given the fact that the laptop and the Surface are connected to different (distant) wifi networks.
I searched for this but could not find a clear answer or "how to" to do it.
Thank you very much
You can do it, look up port forwarding for remote desktop. You need to setup your router to do it.. I think the default port for RD is 3389
Thank you very much
You will also have to know the public IP address of the router, do the port forwarding and it works fine. You can use DynDNS or one of the other services to keep the IP address updated. Or, you can use TeamViewer to do it without touching your router. You have to set up an account at TeamViewer, but everything is free and it works well.

I remote in from outside networks and it works great. Now I just wish we could enable the setting to allow us to transfer files. Where it shows us the local hard drive on the remote computer and all we have to do is drag and drop.

Can you not? Remote Desktop still supports this, at least the desktop version (haven't tried the "Metro" one).
Huzzah!
I'm actually using metro-app on a daily basis with no-ip (so i don't have to remember my own ip-adress all the time)
So all you need to do is:
1. Get your self an account at: http://www.noip.com/
2. Create a host and install client
3. Open port: 3389 on your router and point it to the right computer
4. Allow it in the firewall
5. Connect
There is ofc more steps if you want to be more specific, but I think you'll figure it out
I would have to say Team Viewer is by far the easiest solution.
Yeah +1 Teamviewer here..

++1 just tried this out, dead simple to use and no networking mojo needed.
Interesting you guys have chosen TeamViewer so clearly,....I've just tried it, and it will make due for now, but I need to copy and paste text from pdfs constantly and I noticed it to be extremely laggy by comparison (to RD). I'm guessing it's because it needs to download more data than the native client, but if there are any suggestions on speeding it up please post.
Remote Desktop/RemoteApp Problems
I have not been able to connect while out-of-network.
I've waisted several days of productivity trying to resolve this by myself, then on the phone with Microsoft, and some of them aren't even familiar with Surface RT. So with connecting to RD in-network is pretty easy and effective, hopefully some here can confirm that they have the same problems and/or offer possible solutions.
As I see it, there are 3 interfaces where we can connect to RD on the Surface RT: The the pre-installed desktop Remote Desktop found via swipe and search, the metro downloadable Remote Desktop, and RemoteApp via control panel).
I see where the computer is pinged and port 3389 is open, so I will state the problems I see with each when I try log into a Windows 8 Host computer:
1) pre-installed RD:

It's great and your computer name is there for you and ready while logged into your account and in-network. You have options like "Connect and don't warn me If server authentication fails" that I see helped out a lot of people on Windows Server with certificate issues.
Once out of network on Surface RT, however, you get "Remote Desktop can't find the computer ______. This might mean that "_____" does not belong to the specified network. Verify the computer name and domain that you are trying to connect to."
2) Metro UI:
It seems to ping the computer faster when you put :3389 at the end of your IP. However, no success after trying with and without the port ending. The messages I get are....
3)RemoteApp:
this is the solution I've seen in most tutorials,...but the reason given for not connecting is "The remote computer cannot be authenticated due to problems with its security certificate."
Instead of the option to bypass it (which option 1 gives you), there is no other option and it says "Windows cannot continue setting up this connection. Contact your workplace administrator for assistance."
This message caused me to learn more about certificates than I ever wanted to know. I've tried starting up MMC and making sure the cert listed in Remote Desktop was copied to the Trusted Root Certificate Authorites folders (both sides as local computer certificates). I've tried different combinations and haven't really gotten anywhere.
If anyone connects via #3, please post specs on your certificate if you can find it.
Any help on getting any of these methods to work is appreciated. It bares repeating that port 3389 is listed as open on my home network, traffic is forwarded to the correct PC, and all firewalls are disabled until I can resolve this.
Hello I have been having a problem with my One plus on my network. Its been taking a while for it to connect to data when accessing my phone on the fly. An example is that if I where to start streaming music from Spotify, between songs it would take a good 20 seconds before being able to start up the next track. This has been happening in all applications.
Im using 4g as my preferred network type, att lte (pta) as my APN,
it does find 2 different att networks when searching for "available networks" but im not sure what the difference there is between the two and there's no extra information on them

Possible Fix
I don't know if this will fix your issue, but I have had a similar problem and it fixed mine. Try resetting your default apn settings in Menu>Mobile Network Settings>Access Point Names. From that window click your menu option again and it will come up as Reset to Default. When you do this it forces your phone to shut off mobile data and re-access the mobile network again. It can take up to 60 seconds for this to complete. Let me know if this helps.
If you live in Washington Baltimore area at&t reports that there is lte data connectivity issues at the moment.
By the way for your apn it should be
1. Name of the apn (anything)
2. Under apn type in phone
3. Mmsc should be: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
4. Mmsc proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
5.

I know you may want to be on LTE but if you go back to 3G it will help as will. If are on a ROM that has an LTE toggle turn it off if not do this and see if it works. You would only have to drop back when using spotify. But the above APN should work as well.

First of all what device did you have before the OPO? Second if you came from an iPhone (lol which I hope you didn't) you'll have to get a new SIM card. If you didn't very the IMEI with AT&T I had a similar issue although I was coming from Nexus 5 when it showed 2 networks so I had to get a new SIM card and they have to "provision" and/or send a better signal to the OPO. That fixed my issue and you APN should be automatic but by default it gives you 7 to choose from. Myself I'm using ATT LTE pta and have no issues after switching SIM card and having them "provision" my device. But network operator/available networks should be automatic once you do what I did without having to switch it. Good luk bud!
FYI, not sure if it's dependent on the market of the USA you're in, but I've never gotten the "AT&T LTE" APN to work with any of my Android devices. I've always used the "AT&T Phone" APN. That works flawlessly for LTE signal on AT&T. Again, I'm not sure if you need to switch this depending on your region/market. I'm in the Metro Detroit area.
I've confirmed this with an HTC One X and LG Nitro HD. My last Android phone was a Samsung S4, but I don't recall what the default APN setting was for this phone. I just came back to Android from an iPhone5s and I'm loving it.

or try to disable fast dormancy
Also, the 4.4.4 update arrived today for me and now the Mobile Data menu says "LTE Preferred" instead of "4G Preferred". I'm sure it made no difference in signal but just a menu text change. Also, the status bar at the top now says LTE. Before it used to say 4G, which we all know was actually LTE.
