[Q] Modifying my build.prop to sneak a Samsung app... - T-Mobile LG G2x

Long story short, I have a G2x and don't really care for the available model specific dock, but found the dock for the Samsung Infuse 4g was more what I wanted. I've since rcvd it and as far as the fit and the charging, both successful [albeit, there is a small gap on either side, but not enough to be a deal breaker by any means...]
I then found I needed to DL the 'samsung home dock' app from the marketplace in order to get full functionality [use of a built in speaker and a speaker line out among other things]. Np, it's free... but wait, what's this, it's not there?!? Oh, turns out it's one of those sneaky apps[not unlike netflix at the moment] that is only visible to phns w/the right build.prop fingerprint. Still, np, I'll get it online from the xda forums, they have EVERY apk... They did and I did, still wouldn't install.
SONUVAB! Yep, buggered by the build.prop yet again!
So, now that the short version of my long story was found out to not be short, I am at a dilemma of sorts. I really want to be able to use the audio line out on the dock as well as the built in speaker [even though it's more of a novelty considering I doubt it is as good as the DTS capable speakers on the G2x] so I need the build.prop lines for a samsung model, the mfg, etc.
If you can help me, there is a big thanks in it for you... Not enough you say. Well, maybe a bought drink if you have that nifty link attached to your post.
Alright ppl, let's get crackin!

Here's what you're looking at. if build.prop is the only issue then you're fine. just download a rom that has this app and use the model information for that rom. API level too. something tells me you will need libraries from that rom too though.

He is right.... i have a Vibrant at home but i am at work right now... If you want i will post the build.prop for you and suggestions on what to use, if it is only the actual prop that's holding you back.
here is a vibrant build prop with what i suggest to change. BUT!!!! BACKUP YOUR CURRENT BUILD.PROP!!!!!! I am not responsable if you bork your phone!!!
ro.product.model=SGH-T959
ro.product.brand=Samsung
ro.product.name=SGH-T959
ro.product.device=SGH-T959
ro.product.board=SGH-T959
ro.product.manufacturer=Samsung
ro.build.product=SGH-T959
ro.build.fingerprint=Samsung/SGH-T959/SGH-T959/SGH-T959:2.2/FROYO/UVKB5:user/release-keys
ive used a simular one when i was running netflix on my vibrant but using a build prop from a ZOOM tablet...

Yeah, I know well enough to back up, been down that road w/my G1.
As far as it just being a build.prop issue, that's what I'm hoping, but not expecting. I know it's at least part of the issue though. Gotta go 1 step at a time.
I do thank you both though and will use any help I can get.

Wouldn't it just be easier to find the APK and manually install it?
I doubt the app will require build.prop settings (hope not). Seems like a lot of work to just download an app.

As it states in my original post, I've already tried DL the apk from the xda forums. Unfortunately, also as stated, the install fails. Much like the Netflix app requires a specific build.prop for it to work (although it still doesn't work on all handsets) being a manufacturer specific app, it also checks the build.prop.
I know modifying it isn't a guaranteed fix, its definitely worth a try.

Also as far as the libraries are concerned, I would recommend extracting both roms into seperate directories and diffing them. See which libraries dont match up and just try to add them slowly one by one and see if it works. Thats what I did back in the day and sometimes it worked. Logcat might give some useful info too. Usage: adb logcat

Noob question sorry, is nexus s plain android or is there bloatware installed?

About to buy one and I just wanna know

Pure vanilla Android.
There's a bunch of stuff preinstalled on it, but it's all Google stuff; I don't think there's any third-party apps.
It's not plain android, there's a bunch of Google bloatware.

I'm curious as to what you consider Google bloatware, because the Nexus S is about as plain as you can get. Most of the time bloatware is stuff added by OEMs, such as the preinstalled demo games on the MT4G. Mind elaborating?
I can't speak for JC, but in my mind, anything that comes preinstalled on a device which I neither want nor need is bloatware. This, of course, makes the entire concept subjective, but in general with things like Android, I think less is more, since you can download nearly all of these things from the Market anyway. The consumer-side justification of "bloatware" (revenue for the provider, of course, being the primary, producer-side justification) is to present the user with access to a service they might otherwise not know to look for. ("Oh, hey, my phone can play TV/can display YouTube/has internet radio/whatever!"). For most of us though, particularly anyone savvy enough to be on XDA in the first place, most of it ends up falling into one of three categories:
-Don't care about
-Use a different app for
-Would have downloaded if it wasn't included.
In any case, I've observed that what most people have the biggest issue with isn't that stuff may come preinstalled on their phone, it's that you can't get rid of it, and if you do, you may well open yourself to a world of trouble should you ever wish to install an OTA update.
I would consider it plain android, as the "bloatware" on it is really only google apps, which come with all android phones. It doesn't have bloatware from a third party though like some of the other android phones. Either way, bloatware can be removed off any rooted phone with titanium backup

Fair enough points.
Unfortunately, we still run into that last issue even on the Nexus S. Folks were unable to update via the stock 2.3.1 OTA if they had modified system files, such replacing the stock Mms.apk or Gmail.apk with the black/custom ones from the Themes & Apps section or deleting any of their relevant .odexs. Even placing the missing files back on the system partition didn't seem to work, at least for me. It was a very curious update.

Yeah, I soft-bricked my Vibrant trying to grab T-Mobile's OTA after I took it upon myself to delete all the extraneous crapware that came with it. They can be very touchy indeed. It's a steep learning curve for newbies. x_x

There is also that office app that is NOT a google product...so yea, there is a bit of bloat, but pretty much it is vanilla.

True, but it does still support up to 7.2Mbps down which you'll only get in a t-mobile 4g area.
I was just in Orlando and i was getting around 5-6Mbps on my N1 and in a Nexus S i was testing at best buy and it was pretty damn fast. puts my DSL connection at home to shame.

I don't think Google has an office app for Android. Every device has launched with some kind of partnered 3rd party, either ThinkFree, or Quickoffice. At least, I think those are the two they've used.
If they didn't, you wouldn't be able to read any kind of text document on your phone and that's just kind of a silly thing to not be able to do, imo.
EDIT: And on that note, Google should probably make a office app! lol
Who really cares whats installed or not, EVERYTHING can be uninstalled.
after using ThinkFREE for a while on the Galaxy S, i can say it's really good
way better than the Docs To Go and/or QuickOffice which i'm using on the XT720
but truth is... you don't need any of those with Google Office online, it's so much easier to keep things and work with documents using Google Office Online

[App] MLB AT BAT working on unsupported devices

I got the MLB At Bat 2011 app working for non supported devices since so many devices aren't supported that clearly can run it.
YOU MUST HAVE A MLB.TV SUBSCRIPTION TO GET THE GAMES!!
You also need to buy the At Bat 2011 app.
I have a nook color, but should work for any device.
I changed the build.prop to contain the fallowing:
ro.product.model=SCH-I800
ro.product.brand=verizon
ro.product.name=SCH-I800
ro.product.device=SCH-I800
ro.product.board=SCH-I800
ro.build.fingerprint=verizon/SCH-I800/SCH-I800/SCH-I800:2.2/FROYO/EC02:user/release-keys
rebooted and worked. Should be able to chose any supported device and it will work. This is from the verizon galaxy tab.
I'm very much looking forward to trying this today.
Is there some sort of shortcut that could be made so we don't have to manually edit things every time?
EDIT: it's working! Though the supposed "HD" is far from it, and this is streaming over wi-fi.
I will be checking this out with today's free game of the day!
Now, I just need an easy way to switch the build.prop to watch the games.
the build.fingerprint isn't needed to be changed, works without it. Got it working on my nook color, pretty nice. Need to OC it and have a good fast connetion. Still not near HD though.
Good to know about the fingerprint.
Streaming is working great on my Captivate. Connected on wifi, close to HD after about 30 seconds, but if the connection gets bogged down, the picture loses quality fast.
Nice to have it working, clunky as it is...
I find I need a knead perfect 3G or strong wifi to get decent streaming on my droid2 and nook.

Will changing these settings have any unintended consequences for other apps or the operation of the phone in general? I have a Galaxy S but don't want to stuff anything up just for MLB At Bat.
nm, build.prop is a system file duh?
Congrats on getting this working, jkabaseball.
Are people getting the streaming working on CM7 Stable? I see that Nightly 37 was suggested before Stable came out. I'm on Stable now, and seeing the option, but only getting the white screen. I'm willing to try switching to 37, but it seems like there'd be no reason to do so, given that it's an older version. (Unless something was taken out before the stable release preventing this from working.)
Doesn't work on my nook with cm7. I even copied the signature.....yes I have sub also.
Cm7 installed on the Emmy
Sigh I had high hopes
I have been successful on cm7 stable on my HTC dhd. On a side note, anyone find a workaround to play blackout games?

Just wanted to follow up, and say a HUGE thanks for the info. I modified the build.prop file like you said, and now I can watch the Cardinals anywhere on my Samsung Mesmerize. Just a note it works great even though I am running Voodoo. The only thing that is different is my swype keyboard won't work anymore, says that it was not meant to be used for my device, oh well, I love Cardinals baseball more than swype so who cares!! Thanks again for the info!!

Other apps that require a specific build.prop might not work. I have a Captivate and the preinstalled Swype does not work while I an using the modified build.prop.
I duplicated my build.prop, renamed the duplicate build.prop.mlb and made the changes. Then when I want to watch baseball, I rename the real build.prop to build.prop.real and rename build.prop.mlb to build.prop and then reboot the phone. I switch it back when I'm done.

Doesn't work on the Xoom either.

I tried the app for changing locale, but i believe its a bit more involved than just fooling App Market. Thanks a ton jkabaseball

This might be too basic to ask, but - do you also have the paid app, rather than the free one? And is the sgs4g flash-capable? Those are also prereqs, in addition to the subscription.
The build.prop changes I posted is for the galaxy tab on Verizon. You should be able to use another device like droid2 build.prop and Skype should work as well. On my nook I thought the galaxy tab would be best.
Working on spoofing location. It mint be a little harder. MLB is pretty good at determining your location even through a VPN. I'm not sure if they are using gps location, which would be easy to spoof, or the network location where the stream is going to. I haven't got it to work on my pc yet, but will keep on working on android.

[Q] Extra S2 skyrocket. Uses?

I upgraded to the S3 a month or so back so I have a 4 month old S2 that I'm looking for uses for. I have nobody to give it to and don't really need/want to sell it yet, so I've been researching non phone uses for it. Maybe a streaming cam for home security, a media pc (with external storage of course), something along those lines. Any ideas?
One use: you can use it to test out roms and kernels without fear of damaging your only phone. I'm sure it'd help a dev out if they knew that their rom caused issues, and you have a phone to fall back on.
I'd be doing the same but AT&T bought my SR.
Stock ICS on my S3
Make a cell-bot!! ... I'm into robot things.. so it interests me. Then you could use the cell-bot for the home security. (recording.. and put a tazer on it) or make one of these YouTube Link but with the skyrocket interfaced somehow..
I would do it.. but just don't have the time.. I have a first gen Nao robot (from my university) that I code on. Mainly python or C++. Takes too much time lol
Sly's use is a good one too.. could always use people that aren't afraid to load up a fresh build and report non-bias info.
I assume that it will no longer have a sim card so, wifi only. I'm a little strange, I use my SR for about everything but a phone. I do use mine as somewhat of a HTPC at home. I have it on the nightstand connected to tv which has a small surround sound system. From there I use it for: clock, online streaming (hulu+, netflix, youtube, tedtv...etc.) music and movie streaming from main HTPC, downloading music and movies (faster than my home pc on same wifi). I also use Splashtop which controls main HTPC giving me all the functions of my computer.(tv tuner card and recordings web browsing, documents, printer) remotely with video and sound, So simple explaination: It's my Tv, stereo, clock, htpc for my bedroom. Although I have an MK802 that works pretty well, I'm getting the MK802 iii in a few weeks which will do all of this and be remotely controlled from my phone. Oh yeah I use it as a pc remote control also. These are just the home uses.
But, you could also donate it to a good charity. The "davietr" charity foundation. LOL!
Attach it to a rocket and make it skyrocket!

Give it to Adam Outler so he can figure out an Unbrickable Mod for this phone. It would serve the community in a huge way.

This crossed my mind as well, I was going to make a quad-rotor using the s2 as the I/O controller. It has the perfect setup, all the sensors minus a ground proxsinity sensor. Wiring it all up is no problem, the problem lays in my lack or programming knowledge.
I knew I had seen that one in the video somewhere... but couldn't understand what he was saying
http://www.brookstone.com/rover-remote-control-spy-tank-for-ipad
If I had my hands on that one I would tear it apart and put an Arduino in it (personal preference for building bots -- and simple to use)
Wish I knew more about interfacing a phone with this type of hardware application.
I know the cell-bots website has *some* info..

Ive read up on Arduino some time back, looks like lots of people were thinking along the same lines as I. First thing i'd do with that thing is replace the cam with a better one, maybe a servo to enable some movement of the cam, also pull out those motors and put in some brush less higher torque ones. I'd be willing to buy one of those bots (pending some research) and modding it with the s2 as an on-board interface if anybody has any knowledge of programming. I think it would be a good project for the community.

My Spen "Reset" App

I hope this is the right place to post this. I have owned and really loved my N7000 for several months now. As an ex-Palm user, the SPen stylus was a huge draw. I began to note, however, that over time the accuracy and the location of the floating pointer of my SPen began to drift. I searched and found many people complaining about this and saw multiple posts of "fixes" to try. I even found a paid app in the marketplace that claims to deal with this. I recalled that on my various Palm devices I occasionally had to re-run the touchscreen calibration routine and began to look for one of these thinking it should be built-in. But I could not find one that actually seemed to help.
After more digging I discovered a technique that seemed to work. Simply changing the SPen's dominant hand setting back and forth from my setting of Left to Right and back to Left again made a big difference. But doing so was inconvenient and really had to be done with some regularity to keep things really perfect. After more searching, I discovered how changing the SPen device's dominant hand (not the actual preference setting but seemingly communicating directly with the device) could be triggered by a script. However, this requires ROOT and some way to launch the script. I tired this and found it worked well.
So I decided to wrap this technique up in a little app - my first real Android app. It also requires ROOT and uses much the same technique as the script. You simply tap the app's icon and the quick change is performed - there is no UI. The app determines your current dominant hand setting from the preference file and then tells the device to switch to the opposite hand and back again. Nothing too big here but it seems to work for me (as well as some others who posted this "fix" idea).
I would think it good for this to be scheduled to run regularly (maybe once every .5 - 1 hour) so one never has to be bothered. But for now I haven't figured out how to do this and my guess is there are free apps available that can run this on a schedule. I was able to find such a program to run the script in this manner.
But I have not tested this on any but my own N7000. Will it work for others? Will it work on US carrier's versions of the Note? Will it work on the Note II or the new tablet that has an SPen? I am not sure and am hoping others out there will try this and let me know their findings and suggestions.
Thanks
EDIT: Please note that I have moved the APK file to the Google Play Store. Here is the link.

Also, I can no report that I have this running on a schedule using the Scheduling function of the excellent SManager app from the marketplace. I have been using that to run the onandroid script automatically to perform nightly backups. It can run executable programs as well as scripts. To run the .apk you use the android activity manager program (/system/bin/am) using the following command line:

Thanks, I will look into that. I am so new to this I kept things as simple as possible. A service would seem the right way to handle built-in scheduling. But I would also want to retain the tapping of the app icon so it can be run on command in case the user has set the interval too large and wants to reset things right now.
thats a nice one

Feedback on GB or Jelly Bean?
I should have mentioned in my original post that I have tested this only on Stock Touchwiz ICS 4.0.4 using Hydracore 4.3 kernel. It would be helpful to know if this works and does its job well on other platforms. Lacking adequate hardware, I can think of no way to ascertain this except asking others to try and give me feedback. Other suggestions are appreciated. Thanks
Thank you for this app! I'm using an SGH-T889 Note II and the app worked perfectly. It could just be my imagination, but it really seems like my stylus is way more accurate, so I'm assuming it worked! If anything the app installed and ran fine (it stated successful so I'm assuming it did), and I'm using a US version of Note II on Tmobile with a custom rom (Jedi X5). Just thought I'd let ya know in case you still needed to know if it worked on a different phone. Thanks again!

Thanks for your info. I DO want to know if the app works on other Note I and II phones. It would be great to know if it works on the new tablets that SPens as well.

Ok that's cool I'm glad I could help (even though it's miniscule lol). I can also say now that it's not just my imagination, because it actually does work. This morning I had some time to kill before a meeting so I was doodling it up. After a while I noticed the S Pen accuracy was really starting to slip, so I ran your app again and the difference was amazing! I'm really surprised that Samsung didn't intergrate an app like this, because you'd figure they'd recognize the precision drops over time by now. Anyway I'm definitely glad I found this man and once again I really appreciate your hard work!

Thanks again for the feedback. I guess I will post this thing on the Play store so others may find it more easily. Maybe I will follow-up with a "Pro" version that permits periodic, scheduled running of the app and allows for the notifications to be turned off. Cheers!

hi
this app is a great idea! please update it with schechule... but i still have problems with landscape mode... there it's always off...
a fix for this would be soooo nice!
thx for youre work!
App runs on paranoid Android.
Not sure about tw roms but on cm/pa and aokp roms pointer icon is always slightly towards top left of screen. If phone is rotated, rather than point to the 'new' top left it is still pointing at the volume up button.
To fix landscape we need someone to work out how to convince the input that the screen is 1280 x 800 instead of 800 x 1280, this (I think) means the spen input would need to recalibrate every time your screen rotates eating batteries for breakfast.
Right handed use landscape where bottom of phone moves right (anticlockwise) you can still see it its just off. If you swing bottom of phone left pointer hides behind spen

Thanks for the info and response. Can you please describe: (a) does my app help when in portrait mode? and (b) can you describe how the pointer is off when you are in landscape (which direction and by how much)? and (c) when you return to portrait mode does the pointer seem right?
I have a more complete version offering scheduling and other convenience features coming and will put both on the marketplace once I figure out how to do that.
PS - I think I read somewhere that toggling auto-rotate on/off may help "fix" the S-Pen and I wonder if this will work for you?
Cheers!

Thanks for your info. Good to know that the app doesn't crash on Paranoid. My phone is TW ICS 4.0.4 with Hydracore 4.3 kernel. On my phone I do not see the issue with landscape mode that you and phasA describe. I can say that I really wasn't liking the way auto-rotate was working on my phone (sometimes just too sensitive). So I have installed this app which basically makes me confirm that I want to rotate. Perhaps this has something to do with my I am not seeing this issue?
I still didnt get the use of this app, sorry i am not at all rude but how can changing dominant hands reset the pointer settings. I mean what does it has to do with resetting the pen settings???

T-mobile HD Audio Codec [SOLVED]

Hello all!
As you may know. T-mobile is the first carrier offering support for HD audio and I'm stoked. :laugh: Only within certain high end phones though.
Question is can we get HD audio on the skyrocket since it can run on T-mobile 4G and only a codec is necessary? Any other limitations?
***Also seems an audio codec AMR-WB is necessary. anyway to get around that codec? could a software update do it? an awesome XDA app maybe?
Here's my source (http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2013/04/how-hd-voice-works-to-make-your-calls-clearer/)
amongst many other articles on the web.
Thanks in advance! All well thought input is appreciated and expected
EDIT! [POTENTIAL SOLUTION]
I've learned that the app "Pimp My ROM" allows you to enable or disable AMR-WB! To confirm this working I need someone to test it, post your results!. Here's what you have to do::
1. Be unlocked and rooted (of course)
2. Insert a working tmobile Sim.
3. NETWORK REQUIREMENT Have to have service above **edge/2G!! you could try anyway lol
** Means you need 3G service or faster.
4. Install, Pimp My ROM and enable AMR-WB.
4. Make a call to someone who you know has a phone which is HD audio capable, they must meet the same network requirements.
For reference this is what HD audio sounds like http://www.dialogic.com/en/solutions/mobile-vas/hd-voice.aspx
One is regular the other is HD sound.
Hit Thanks if this works or at least helps!
EDIT #2
I have concluded from reviewing skyrocket spec sheets and reading up on audio codecs that the skyrocket does not have the proper audio codec built in which I learned is a requirement.
So disregard this very very hopeful thread lol I will consider this solved :/
Bump, anyone! lol

Unlikely unless it's done fully in software and cm adds it. I would keep a eye on the SGH-T989 forum as that's our T-Mobile sister phone.

Good point thanks!
I poked around a little more btw what you want is AMR-WB. I've seen a few posts that it can be enabled on the S2 kindof sortof by adding ro.ril.enable.amr.wideband=1 in the build.prop. This might be a case where you'll need to play with radio's and ril binary files. it also sounds like there's not a good way to tell if wideband is in use :/.

Thanks a lot man! and also for not flaming. I think I'm bad at this forum thing :/ I could have easily searched but it never occurred to me that others might be working on this...smh.
Also found this... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1575708
Not our phone but it talks about trying different radios and ril binaries like you said. The link above mentions AMR-WR being enabled and/or allowing the setting to be changed by certain ROMs/Radios.
I'm gonna get a little funky and mess with different combos of our Skyrocket stuff and the Hercules Stuff. This enigma will be no more! Will report back in days/weeks/months however long until I solved.
