Safe overclock speed? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a maximum "safe" overclock speed?
I've been running mine undervolted and at 1.2 GHz without issue for several weeks now.

no ! cause when you star OC its more than then samsung has planned for your CPU so no!
, but when youf Phone is stable with 1,2ghz than you could use it without any harm!

Some phones handle handle overclocking better than others, even within a particular line. I was running mine at 1.4 ghz without any issues.

You can keep increasing it by one notch until it reaches to a point of instability. It'll freeze and reboot

I'm running stock myself, but I've heard a few people running stable @ 1.4, with overvolt.

You have to have a kernel that allows overclocking.

Are you using a custom kernel??

Also, in case you didnt know.. Kernels may state 1.5Ghz and such but that doesnt mean YOUR phone will be able to go that high. Every device is different so every device's has a different max frequency.
Set CPU currently doesn't work with out kernels. You must install one of the OC/UV kernels from the development section and use the pimp my cpu app to overclock

Ok, that makes sense I'm using the EB 1.04F trinity kernel +48 and was using pimp my cpu and I can overclock just fine there but I wanted to try out setcpu out.
I have it over clocked @ 1.2 -50 in all frequencies and scheduler is the default one. Force Min Frequency is checked as well.

On a side note, my g2x has been highly unstable after leaving it sit while using pimp my cpu. However, I created a .txt file with clock frequencies and I was able to use setcpu with little to no side effects. But after all, what is ocing even good for? Benchmarks... Mt4g, n1, g1, mt3g, hd2. Tried ocing on all of them and didn't see a noticeable day to day difference compared to stock frequency...

On the mt4g I was able to play dungeon defenders OCed at 1.5 without much lag. Without it the game was almost unplayable because it would lag like crazy when the graphics got too intense. But on the downside it sucked my battery dry within hours

[Q] cpu overclock app

hey guys just rooted transformer and now i am try to get my transformer to 1.6 ghz got supporting kernal, now i am trying to figure out how to actually get it to 1.6 i turned to so max says 1.6 now the min is at the bottom is that how i correctly clock it at 1.6 i was thinking i should move min to 1.6 or just under that.
You don't want the minimum to be as high as the maximum as it will be going flat out even when idling.
Make the min as low as it will go and set the maximum to 1.6. The processor will go as fast as it needs to up to 1.6. You can use something like quadrant to see the improvement.

i tried cpu master did notice any improvement however cpu overclock app i boosted about 1000 points just wondering cause over all i did not see a noticable difference in using such as quickness or whatever

[Q] NS4G Heat Problem

My Nexus S 4G seems to heat up very quickly. While I was expecting this behavior during excessive 3g/4g use, I was NOT expecting it while reading PDFs on my phone. I am using the built-in ThinkOffice to read the PDFs, but the phone always heats up after 10-15 minutes of use. Has this happened to anyone else before? If so, what is the solution?
Currently, my phone is rooted, with 2.3.7 stock ROM w/ Apoc-Talon v 2.1 kernel, overclocked to 1440 Mhz w/ Smartass v2. The heat problem has also happened while my phone was running a stock 2.3.4 ROM on the Netarchy kernel.
Its your kernel. I'm running cm7 at 1440 too and my phone never gets past 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Even while tethering which surprised me. When I tethered on my epic it would get hot enough to fry eggs. Even when downclocking to reduce heat. Just a hunch

Even if your overclocked it doesn't mean your gonna overheat. The CPU scales. Remember that. Its not like its running at 1440 all the time. Ive been running at 1440 ever since 7.1.0 came out with absolutely no overheating or lock ups.

You can't dispute what I said. Because you are able to overclock to 1.4 without issues he should automatically be able to? Are all cpu's equal? Take some time to think about it.

Of course. But that wasn't wwhat you said. You said overclocking needs higher voltages. Understood. I was only saying that the chances of his phone overheating because of ocing is slim. As far as I know only benchmarks and a few gpu intensive games will push the phone to run at 1.440 ghz. The CPU scales and barely even touches 1.2 ghz. Floats around 200 and 800mhz for the most part. I'm deducing this from my own usage and keeping an eye on the CPU with cpuspy. My point was that ocing wont do this unless he's actually pushing the CPU that far or setting the governor to performance. Which from the looks of it isn't the case

Now that I measured it with a battery app, the temperature only goes up to 107.6 degrees...guess it just seemed really hot to me.

Over 1.2GHz = Lock

Hello everyone. I have had my Nexus S 4G for about 2 weeks now, and I have tried everything I can think of. However, I cannot overclock my phone higher than 1.2GHz. If I set it to 1.44GHz (or even 1.3GHz in most kernels), within the first five minutes, it locks up, requiring a battery pull. I have tried just about every kernel. Trinity, Netarchy, Matr1x, everything. However, I get the same result. I am assuming that it is just my phone. I know that when I had my Evo, it didn't want to OC past 1.1 GHz stably, but the refurb I got from Sprint ran at 1.21 GHz like a champ. I was just wondering if anyone had the same issue, and if so, if it was possible to alleviate this problem. I would love to run my Nexus at 1.44 GHz, because some of the Quadrant scores look amazing.

After running Quadrant twice with it set at 1.3, I got a lockup. 100% not responsive. Had to pull battery.
EDIT: I tried benchmarking my phone with CF-Bench, thinking maybe it could have been a fluke with Quadrant, and had the exact same results. At 1.3 and 1.46GHz.

I can overclock without reboots to 1.2. Any higher than that is when the problem arises.
Ok now once you flash v9.0, go into setcpu and raise all voltages by 30
Now try 1.3

OK, so Quadrant ran fine for 5 tests, and CF-Bench ran OK as well. Should I push it up to 1.46 now?
Try it, and if you get a reboot, raise voltage for 1.46 by 10.

No lockups yet! I have ran Quadrant 5 times, CF-Bench 2 times, and Linpack a couple times. Seems to be doing great! I am going to test it more thoroughly tomorrow (it's almost 1AM where I live, lol), but it seems great right now!
I have never increased the voltages on a phone CPU before. I have done it on my brother's computer when I overclocked his processor, but I generally try to avoid it. I am just really paranoid to mess with the amount of power going through the processor. That's why I turned to the professionals in this case. Thanks again for your extremely quick reply.

Mathkid Ive never been stable past 1.3 so I followed what you told him to do and what do you know! Perfectly stable so far at 1.44 on apocalypse kernel!! Might have to try your 9.0 at 1.46 soon!

So is there a limit to how far one should overvolt? I upped the voltage at 1440 mhz to 1550 mV. Did run rather stable except for "Lets golf HD!" which froze. I would really like to be able to run at 1440, but not sure what to do. Im using Apocalypse Talon 3.2.1.
Do you think your kernel would handle OCing better, mathkid?

I know that if you OC/UV incorrectly, it can cause stability issues. But I was wondering does it cause any damage to the phones hardware like battery, etc? And like how can you tell when SETCPU is causing problems?

Well if you OC to high numbers your just stressing the cpu more.Knowing when you have issues is simple getting random reboots,phone getting too hot etcc.
It differs for every phone but undervolting -25 for each voltages works well.
Personally I really don't see the point overclocking to high levels like 1.4 ghz etc,Is up to individual I guess.

Yeah I have been wondering what's the point of OC to 1.4? Does it make that big of a difference in the 4g speed? And cpu speed?

Honestly, there really is no point other than for benchmarks. I, like mt3g, actually underclock the phone to something like 750-760mhz; it runs beautifully smooth.
Other than that, if you game a lot and want to maximize FPS, then overclocking would do that for you.
Doesn't have anything to do with 4g speed afaik. That's entirely reception.
Yeah 4g is about reception and tmobile simply.
I mean I had single core devices like MT4g ,SGS 4g for the most part on a day to day basis transitions to transitions theres not much diffirence in terms of speed. Now for FPS and a few other games you need that dual core.Point is there"s no need to OC a dual core phone!

I have had mine OC'd to 1.1 ghz with some undervolts. It is very stable , 10-12 hr battery with medium to heavy use , and ofcourse fast. Took a while to find the best settings.
When I have SetCPU set to 1015 megahertz, that's the same as stock voltage, isn't it?

Changes you might see are battery life but not that much unless you so how mess with voltage. Like other have said you know it effecting stability when its overheating, shutting down randomly, exiting program randomly.
