Just was wondering if you guys believe we will be able to get hspa with ATT prepaid.?? Anyone know?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
not any time soon, only a couple markets will have 3g on go phone by the end of march. Until at&t releases prepaid smartphones plans, this will not happen. I have heard that at&t plans to have the entire network (2g and 3g) covered by hspa by the end of 2011. Maybe then will we see some changes.
3G should work on any att phone, gophone or not (assuming there's 3G coverage where you live). HSPA+ definitely won't work, because there are no prepaid HSPA+ features/plans yet.
I used 2 different iPhones on att prepaid. And I got 3g just fine (should work with hspa+ just fine as long as its available in your area). It should work but remember android devices use a lot of data so disable it or make sure that you disable all the apps that sync data.
you cant, it will check the miei number or something and deactivate it
Ok while I know everything works fine on prepaid, no 4g here yet so that much I am not sure. I know after a rom flash you will get a completely different set of APN for prepaid.

No it wont. With pay as you go they don't really care because there is no unlimited data for it. You will not get a txt saying you have the wrong data plan. You wont hear anything from att. Like I said before I used 2 different iPhones on a pay as you go ( the original iPhone and the iPhone 3g). I also used 2 different blackberrys too ( the curve and the storm). Never once did att contact me about the phone I was using. I used that sim card for over a year. Then when i went with a contract account they didn't even change my sim card. I continued to use the same sim card till i got my iPhone 4.

Its a world phone. So it has sim card slot and can be unlocked for att and tmobile. So its a cdma and gsm phone.
It's not GoPhone, but I have my Inspire working just fine on StraightTalk, $45/month for unlimited everything. The only downside is that you have to purchase a $200 Nokia StraightTalk smartphone to get a compatible SIM (no way around that) and keep it in a drawer for as long as you have service. My data speeds are just as fast as regular AT&T around my area, about 5mb down, 2mb up.

O there is hope lol when my contracts up with ATT I will head over to ATT. Thanks for posting this comment
Sent from my HTC Inspireâ„¢ 4G on AT&T
My mother got and Infuse yesterday and i was over at her house playing with it with my sim in. after i was done i took my sim out and put it back in my fuze (shudder). this morning just as i was leaving the house for the day i got a text message from AT&T telling me that "An eligible data plan is required for your 4g Smartphone. We have added an appropriate data plan. Learn more at att.com/smartphoneplans."
so i disabled data and when i went into my acct on the web when i got home, sure enough the only data feature options i could choose were the new tiered data plans. i had to put my sim in my old ooooooold tmobile MDA for an hour or so until it updated the imei and then i could go back and choose the unlimited data option.
is this normal? if i upgrade to an infuse will that cancel my grandfather'd status? has anyone else grandfather'd updated and kept their data plan? if so how? and if i upgrade through best buy or amazon at the discounted price will i be allowed to keep it or do i have to go to an att store and pay the full upgrade price?
This has happened to a few people on the forums (lost the unlimited when it switched them to 4g) but it shouldn't. Call 611 or go into a store and they can fix it for you. You can have unlimited 4g with you grandfathered plan its just apparently sometimes putting people back to the 2gb.
I was able to keep my unlimited..
sent from Infuse but miss my captivate on cont. 5.5.... One day this can be as good...
They make it a hassle, but you can keep your unlimited data.

I got the Inuse at Best Buy and they let me keep my unlimited data without any issues. Before that I had bought the Atrix at Best Buy and had no problems either. The rep just said he was going to switch me to unlimited 4G cause the 4G plan is a bit different.
thanks all of you
the issue that occured is that our at&t systems have different classification data plans.
ie: one for blackberries, one for general smartphones (android/palm/symbian/winmo ect), iphone, and hspa+ devices. the fuse is a general classification smartphone so the message was saying that when you put your sim card in the infuse as it is a hspa+ phone, your data might not work correctly, hence the text message to change your data plan. if you go into a cor store, any rep should be able to continue your grandfathered unlimited status.
No issues here, I still have my unlimited plan...

If they try to do that, call customer care, let them know you have grandfathered unlimited data, they will file a case to change it back. They "accidentally" did that when they provisioned our sim cards for 4g when my wife and I got our Inspire's...
Hell yeah if they remove it I woukd transfer my four family plan to Sprint, now sprint has the same customer service as verizon up date according to recent survey.

When you call ATT tell them it's called SmartPhone Personal.
Tell them you want to keep the unlimoted plan. Some reps may say you can't but you Can. Dont ttake no for an answer.

It still possible to get an unlimited plan even if you weren't grandfather by iphone or something? I only had the option for 200mb for $15 or the 2gb for $25 and no option for unlimited.

ok, i have a question for you, i'm planing on getting an infuse on upgrade, selling that and getting a gs2. if i go back to the $30 unlimited plan when i upgrade after getting the gs2 would i be able to switch back to the cheaper unrecognized imei data plan that i'm on now?
if YOU don't choose to change to another plan, you stay grandfathered. I am still unlimited. If you choose to go to another plan because its cheaper and later decide to use tons of data, you cant go back. If your plan was automatically changed, let CS know. they have the ability to override and re-authorize unlimited.
If they switch me to the H+ unlimited from regular old unlimited will I be able to still use my sim in my HD2? Thanks!
Also has anyone bought from Amazon. How did you go about keeping your unlimited? Just sign up for one of the available plans and then call and have it switched back?
Grandafthered plan
I have grandfathered $30 real unlimited on infuse - only thing changed is 4G addition to it. I understand that they need to classify plans somehow but i do not believe that 4G changes anything related to connection speed. I live in Portland,OR area and eventhough ATT coverage is good localy there are still no real 4G speeds. I tried Inspire, Atrix and now Infuse and none of them went over 2.5Mbps download and 0.5Mbps upload -EVER.
All their bogus stories about 4G cards and 4G dataplans are fairytales --- GSM phone needs provisioned (active) SIM Card of any type, proper APN setup, and reciever able to decode given 3G /4G frequency bands. With such combination you can connect to any GSM network (provided roaming is enabled too). So you can switch SIM cards from phone to phone regardless of data plan in their system.
I was landing on PDX airport in 2009 from Frankfurt, had my N95 with Vodafone prepaid SIM in it and as soon as I turned it on, it autoconfigured and locked to Tmobile 3G network as I still had some money on it to use data and calls. I was also using one ATT SIM card with same data plan (switching to and from ) Iphone3Gs, HTC Touch Pro2, Nokia N97 and unlocked Motorola Defy. Never had single issue...
On the other hand, after being AT&T, Cingular, at&t customer for 10+ years, I am starting to wonder is their service generally worth the money I pay every month.
My bill is for 4 phones;
unlimited family text,
1400min,
real unlimited data plan for Infuse,
real unlimited data plan for Iphone,
2 unlimited data for non smartphones for kids ($10 each)
Total: ~$220 every month....
I was recently looking into Virgin Mobile plans and they give $40 unlimited calls, messages and data. For $25 you get unlimited calls, messages and 20 megs of data (for kids...and my kids use barely any data)
Now that would cut my phone bill about ~$100/month ($1200/year)
Problem is that my dear wife would let go of the Iphone only from her dead cold hands...and she is using it like it is Apache server ~ 10Gig/month
I know I am going off topic but regardless grandfathered or not, my data plan on ATT costs only $10 less then all unlimited package on Virgin mobile.
I am aware that they do not have fancy phones as ATT but honestly ATT does not have a near selection of good phones as Verizon or T-mobile...and lesser data speeds too.
Now I wanted some opinions on my thoughts to switch carriers (and just to let you know I never used anything but GSM since i got my first cell phone in 1993 in Hamburg Germany where I am originally from)
I upgraded to an Inspire. I had 3g on my account, so I called ATT to get it changed to 4g. The associate I spoke to said he couldn't give me unlimited 4g, even though I was grandfathered in with 3g unlimited by the resolutions department. Is there any real reason to switch to 4g, if it comes at the cost of having a 2gb usage cap?
Guess it all depends on the rep you get, but I can assure you that its still active. Just did it a couple weeks ago. I would recommend going to an att corporate store, not a vendor. Whatever you do, dont ditch the unlimited. Good luck

1. Stick to unlimited 3G
2. Root ur phone and turn ENG S-OFF
3. Install custom ROM and get "H" (AT&T's equivalent of 4G) speeds

I do have an H+ icon in the top right corner of the phone's screen. Someone I know used to do the old imei switcharoo to nonsmartphone data plan, but that doesn't work on Android phones like it did on the tilt2 (according to a good friend of mine.) Does Eng Off have anything to do with that? He said it worked fine on the nonsmartphone plan for a couple of days, and then when he downloaded his first app from the market. *****smacked. Got an mms saying he'd been switched to a suitable smartphone data plan. Misses the tilt2 to the tune of about 30 bucks a month.

You might as well get this issue resolved now, because in the future when all the true 4g LTE phones come out, your 3g plan might not get you LTE speeds. Currently a 3g plan is enough to get you "4g" speeds, because AT&T is calling HSPA+ "4g" (my old iPhone 4 is a "3g" phone but I get "4g" HSPA speeds on it). There is no way of knowing if a 3g plan will get you true LTE speeds in the future, and you'll wish you had grandfathered yourself into the unlimited 4G plan now. I would take stickbo's suggestion and go in person to an AT&T store and make them grandfather you into the unlimited 4g plan.
you can keep it if you are grandfathered and have 4g unlimited. i got the text when i got my inspire. called and verified it would remain grandfathered, and it does show unlimited online. i have a premier account, but i doubt it makes a difference
HSPA+ =\= HSPA. Get your account provisioned right, even if you have to call another agent or go to the store to get it done. Remember, carriers can limit which tech you are able to connect to. If you are limited to HSPA only you may never get the max out of this phone, let alone future ones.

Sorry for my ignorance but AFAIK there is no 4G card and/or plan or special provisioning at ATT at current time.
You (we?) should be good with a "3G" SIM to fetch 4G speeds where they are available (roll-out from ATT is rather slow). 4G LTE IS indeed another story.
Regarding grandfathering in, ATT tried the same thing with me and others to "downgrade" the plan (PDA personal 30 bucks a month unlimited data) to 2GB/month. A single call to ATT solved this problem because they have to grandfather you in if you are willing to pay 30 bucks for unlimited instead of 25 for 2 GB capped. With new plans it's a different story, they will be capped to 2 GB unless you do the iPhone 2G trick (search the forum).
Just my $ 0.02
I am on a medianet plan and my phone says I have hspa+. How can I confirm this? Medianet apns have been working fine but when I called about having unsigned apps activated ota they said my 4G might not work so great. Seems ok although hspa+ not 4g or anywhere near it.
I got unlimited 4g when I got my Inspire 1 month ago. I just called ATT support and they verified that you can get unlimited with 4g anywhere in the US. Talk to another agent. Most of them are stupid. When I got my inspire I was told that I couldnt even get 4g without a new simcard lol.

Call them up. Threaten to leave because they wont grandfather you in. I assure you they will. I just switched from a grandfathered unlimited iphone plan that I got grandfathered from a medianet unlimited plan(They grandfathered me from medianet unlimited because i told them the tos doesn't say you have to have unlimited smartphone data to get grandfathered it just says unlimited data. They ended up putting in the unlimited iphone data plan for users that dont have required data plan). I had no issues what so ever if the rep refuses ask to speak with a manager. They can change it.

There is no unlimited 4G as well as there is no true indication of 4G. There is limited or unlimited DATA, period.
Thought this would be clear. The little + doesn't tell you anything beside that you have "at least" a 3G connection and that you're not running on edge!
You either need a good GSM test tool - even this may tell you only UMTS or WCDMA or simply speed test. 3G should be capped at about 3.5 mbps down, 4G/HSPA+ will run between 4 and 8 mbps down, the latter in good areas.

Your only technically right. Try running your service without the "4g" data plan (your data speeds wont change i know i ran the 3g data plan then switched to the "4g" data plan). Att will constantly txt and email about needing the correct data plan and then change it themselves like they do for the iphone. And you may not get grandfathered over. The op is only asking a question about what he is being told by att and also looking for some advice to keep his unlimited data.

That's similar to how my upgrade worked too. Originally an unlimited MediaNet plan (with an Ericsson clamshell), upgraded into an unlimited 3G plan (AT&T Tilt 1), upgraded again into their unlimited "4G*" plan with the Inspire.

Premier account DOES make a difference. I can get any smartphone (exception of iphone) without the otherwise mandatory data plan. And sometimes when I choose early upgrades I get the price between the regular upgrade and regular early upgrade (e.g., instead of paying 399 for Atrix under early upgrade, I got it for 275).

I changed phones (Fuze to Inspire and had PDA unlimited since my Tilt/Kaiser), they tried to pull the 2 gig cap stunt on me - complaint - got unlimited. Never got any emails or other notifications that I require a 4G plan (which IMO doesn't exist anyway) and can get up to 8.5 mbps download in good areas - so I must have INDEED 4G 'cuz 3G wont support these speeds.

AT&T speak, if you read carefully, says they are working on providing "4G speed", with essentially some network tricks with 3G technology. That said...I'm happy when I get off my 12 hour shift at 5AM and hit 7.6 down :-=p. Hee hee finally Star Trek (TOS) shyte I grew up watching is possible on my effin phone!

You keep saying the 4g plan doesn't exist, but it does. It doesn't make a difference in speeds, and it might just be a technicality, but there are separate plans. This is how they are worded in my family account under "manage features" (I've got 1 Inspire and 3 iPhones in my family account):
-SmartPhone Personal (Unlimited) <<this is the grandfathered 4g unlimited plan
-DataPro 2GB for 4G Smartphones
-DataPlus 200MB for 4G Smartphones
iPhone plans have a different name:
Data Plan for iPhone (Unlimited)
DataPro 2 GB for iPhone
DataPlus 200 MB for iPhone
There may come a day when having a 4g plan DOES make a difference in your speeds. That is why I was telling the OP to try to grandfather into the unlimited 4g plan NOW, because these unlimited plans are going the way of the dinosaur. Once you lose that grandfathered connection, it is gone forever.
I have an htc inspire and when my contract expires in November I am thinking I would like to go data only on it . I don't make many phone calls and like the idea of having something like a smartphone in my pocket that i could check my email or google maps when i would need it but don't want to pay a fortune for a contract that i don't need. Would the t-mobile $30 a month for unlimited 4g and 100 minutes work on the inspire? Btw i'm located about 30 miles south east of chicago if that is any help. Want to know what my options would be on something like this. Also I have a playstation vita 3g which i never use the 3g part. would it be possible to take out that sim card and use the data plan on that?
The inspire does not have T-Mobile 3g radios. You will only get edge with T-Mobile sim. So if you can live with that then go ahead. There is straight talk they sell att sim unlimited tlk, txt, around 2gb of data for 45. Also get postpaid coverage with roaming!!!!
Sent from my HTC Inspire 4G using xda premium
so if i went to canada like i do once or so a year i would be able to use my data at no additional charge?
So I am getting a LG G2 paid for by my work on Verizon. I won't have unlimited talk & text but pretty much will (along with 2gb of data). I want to keep my nexus 5 and personal phone number (didn't want to port over my number).
Anyways I want to drop the service down to a cheaper plan that my current straight talk one. I was thinking maybe h20 wireless with the unlimited talk/text w/ 500mb of data for $27 with autopay. Or maybe the tmobile $30 plan.
What do you guys think? Any cheap plans suggestions?
It completely depends on your usage and what networks get decent coverage near you.
For AT&T's network, I don't think H2O gives you anywhere close to 4G speeds, but that may be old information. Aio is $35 a month with 500MB at 8Mbps and unlimited at 128kbps.
On T-Mobile's network, the $30 a month plan is good if you don't need a lot of talk.
I'm on the $30 a month t mobile plan currently, it is a great plan since I don't talk on the phone.
Sadly I live in an area where T mobile service just doesn't cut it. I get full LTE out doors but as soon as I step inside I am down to 1 bar of 'e' or '3g'.
I will be moving to Straight talk (AT&T) for $45 a month in a couple of weeks to compare, definitely worried about ST throttling my data though as I have read they do quite often.
My husband is on the $30 tmo plan. Don't think you can really beat that currently for service...as long as you don't need the minutes.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
As long as the area you live in has good T-Mobile coverage, I'd say go with them. I'm paying $80 a month with them, which includes unlimited everything (LTE data as well) and insurance. If you can settle with slower data the $30 plan cannot be beat.
