Hi, got my G1 from a friend who got it from T-mobile.
Its unlocked and rooted. I tried checking about->update and it keeps saying that im using the latest version. I have RC33 installed.
also would upgrading to cupcake lock my phone again? do i need to unlock it again?
thanks
since its rooted no you will not reciecieve an OTA update, or you might but it wont work.....
on top of that id venture to guess root or not anyone not on T-mobile isnt going to be recieving OTA updates
The OTA updates come from Google, not T-Mobile, so your carrier wont affect it. Country shouldn't matter either (as far as I know) and no, you wont have to unlock it again
thanks for your replies.
I got a copy of cupcake from the net, just wondering should I wait for JF's mod? or is cupcake good enough even you dont have a rooted phone?
RC or ADP Cupcake ? and where ?
hi, i am planning on purchasing a sprint nexus s 4g. i already have a phone with a contract so i will not be activating it. i was wondering if i could officially upgrade the sprint nexus s 4g to ics without connecting to the sprint network or registering the phone. then would i be able to unlock and root? what i am really asking is will phones that are not connected to a cellular network still get the OTA upgrade or not.
thank you

I can't speak for the NS4G, since I don't have one, but I did just load a stock rom on my Evo Shift 4G that I am selling. The phone is not activated right now, and was only connected to wifi. I went to check for updates, and I was able to update to the latest version available on the Shift. YMMV. I've also done the same thing on an old Evo 4G. Only connected to wifi, and was able to apply updates.
Also, has the ICS update for the Sprint version been released yet?

There is no ICS OTA for the NS4G yet. When there is you should be able to update over wifi. Or you'll be able to just grab the OTA as a flashable zip from here once its released.

can you get ota with the bootloader unlocked? or do you have to relock it before you can get it.

I'm fairly certain you need to relock the phone, and then apply the update. The update won't process if the hboot is unlocked. From there, you will be able to unlock the phone again, to gain root access.

I'm new to the NS4G myself so I may be wrong but I've read many people post that you can still get OTAs with an unlocked bootloader and rooted. Supposedly you just have to be on a stock ROM already and can't have made any changes to any system files.
I bought a sim-locked xperia x10 with android 2.3.x installed, but couldnt use it due to the fact it was locked. So i decided to give it to a "cellphone-shop" to let them unlock it for me. They did but now the android version is 2.1. 1-update or something like this.
So my question is: Can i update the phone via pc companion and it stays unlocked or will it be locked again after i updated it to 2.3.x again??
Thanks in advance
i updated no problem, after the update it was still unlocked.
good luck
yeah, but the guy there told me not do update it, the reason why i asked is that this guy didnt really seem to know what he was talking about, still he told me that it would be locked again after an update, so i need to be sure before i really update, would be nice if someone could ensure me that its not gonna be locked again after the update, maybe yours was unlocked in a different way than mine......
but still, thanks for the answer^^
plus, i dont think that my phone was unlocked via a code.........but i'm not sure!
is there anyone who can tell my why or why not it will be locked again after the update?
i'm not clear about your question...you mean unlock bootloader or sim?
im talking about a sim-unlocked phone (was unlocked by a shop and i dont know how they did it), i dont want to unlock the bootloader, i just want to know if it will be sim locked again after an update to android 2.3.x from 2.1. 1-update or not, but i want to be sure, i really want to avoid updating and again having a useless up to date phone
also the guy who originally sold me the phone told me that he unlocked it and before he actually sold me the phone, updated the software, when i got the phone i couldn use it with my sim-card...it was locked again, but he told me that he could use the phone with two different sim-cards from two different providers even after the update, but the phone simply didnt take my sim-card (3rd other provider).....i just dont know^^
It's my understanding that once your phone is unlocked it can't be locked again. My advice is to do the update and if it's locked again kick that dude in the throat for failing.
well, if its locked again and i tell that dude that he failed, he will say that he told me not to update it and kick my ass for complaining xD
i mean i would do that if i tell somebody not to do something he then does and afterwards complains about it.....
is there noone who can tell me for sure if it will be locked again or not?
OK, i finally did the update and it remained unlocked......NIIIICE
the official upgrade is gonna arrive next month and i am going to upgrade my phone. i unlocked my phone using HTCdev unlock and got it rooted using superoneclick.Nothing else. But since the update would require a locked bootloader i had some doubts?
1. if i relock my bootloader using HTCdev then i will only loose root but not mess up my phone right?
2. and even if i do relock my phone, will i be eligible for the upgrade? or will it get stuck in a bootloop?
its only rooted no custon roms installed no nothing. i just hope i don't have to go through the RUU process for (to be eligible for OTA update) because its a bit daunting.
thanks for your replies and hope this hasnt been asked before
id also like to know how to avail official ics update.. and also how go back to original rom.. im on sense 3 custom rom..

2) On my phone it still shows android market place: How can I get Google Play app?? Will it upgrade automatically or will I have to manually update it and how??
3) Any help with the dialer bug thing?? Its taking 95% in my battery usage thing I tried all of the suggestions mentioned here http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=17383, but still the dialer thing is using 95%
4) Please suggest some awesome apps/games for my chacha.
5) And finally if any chacha users would like to share tips/tricks, I would really appreciate it.

Is your phone locked to a certain network or originally sold by a network? The network may not have bothered to push out the latest update, in which case you need to unlock your bootloader to get it.

It should update automatically. If you're impatient, you can download it here and install it manually.

If turning off the sensor based stuff doesn't fix it, you're stuck with the problem as long as you're on the stock ROM sadly. CM7 ROMs don't have this issue and I'm personally looking into fixing it by putting the stock AOSP dialler in my Sense ROM. I'll see if that works before putting it in a final release but it's a possible fix.
4) Please suggest some awesome apps/games for my chacha.

Awesome apps: any file browser (personally I like ASTRO but everyone has their preference)... Other than that all my favourites are root apps
I recommend just going through the Play Store and seeing what apps you like the look of. You probably won't get too far with games on this phone though TBH.

My phone is not locked to any network, I mean I bought the phone unlocked. Still I am not able to update to the latest version.
Thanks for the link for google play store, I will right away install it.
As for the dialer bug thing, after doing all the things mentioned, I am getting like 12 hr run on 100% full battery charge with moderate browsing with wifi. Is this ok?? I mean should I be getting more battery backup??
Now I am totally new to the android rooting scene and I have been reading the xda forums for unlocking the bootloader for chacha and stuff. I checked that my phone is S-ON (dont know what that means, but checked it as it was mentioned in some thread lolz). So does that mean I wont be able to root my phone and install cwf??
Also I want to install cwf on my phone and I checkd out ur cwf and I would like to try that out. But will the sense theme be still there on cwf?? as I really like it and dont want to get stock android theme on my chacha if I install cfw.

If you stay on stock, just wait and see if it gets the update. If it's unlocked it should notify you of it eventually.

You can indeed root and install a custom ROM regardless, just do the official HTC bootloader unlocking process: http://htcdev.com/bootloader/

This week I will atleast unlock the bootloader frm the htcdev site and root the phone. On the weekend I will install your rom.

After rooting the phone can I install paid apps for free on my phone??

No No, you got me wrong...I wanted to know that if I just unlock the bootloader and root the device and dont install any custom firmware, then will I be able to install paid apps for free?? I am still confused....what if I just want to root the device and not install any custom firmware until I feel the need to...will I be able to use the phone??
Hope I am not confusing you, as I am really confused...as I just had this in my mind that if I just root the device I will be able to use paid apps for free.
Help me out here

No, rooting does not help you install paid apps for free either. If you just root the device without installing custom ROMs you can indeed still use the device just fine.
hey i was unlocking the bootloader frm the htc dev site, and it gave me an error.
It said my current version is 1.20.720.1 and i will first have to update to the latest version to use the ruu tool.
Now as I mentioned that i am not able to update my phone to the latest version, how can i manually update my phone to the latest version so that i can unlock the bootloader and root my device?? BTW i am frm india so i will need the latest version for india.
You have to update the HBOOT not the OS. The process should have a list of links for updaters, choose the one you need and run it on your computer and follow the instructions.
i downloaded the ruu tool from the htcdev site. after i run it, and i do next, next, next...the phone restarts and stays on the htc log screen. after some time i get an error message saying: ur software is not updated and gives error.
What's the error? Did the updater match your phone?
no software update, hence cannot unlock bootloader
I am facing the exact same problem.
The HTC chacha I bought here(India) came with Android 2.3.3 and firmware version 1.20.720.1. When I try software update, the phone says no software updates available.
I tried to unlock the boot loader but the RRU says you are not running the latest software, please update the ROM.
ERROR[190]: ROM IS NOT UPDATED
The error dialog screenshot is attached.
Can anyone tell me how to update to 1.57.720.1, so that i can unlock my bootloader?
My CID is HTC__38

@ hexgore: This is the exact error which I am getting.
@ kini1982: Thanks for sharing the screenshot. I am also in India and my chacha also is running on 2.3 with version 1.20.720.1. Let me know if you find any way around to unlock the bootloader for your phone. Anyways, also keep on checking this thread as hexgore is helping me with the errors which I am facing.
I sent an email to HTC customer care regarding the update problem. They are asking me to take my phone to a authorized service center to update from 2.3.3 to 2.3.5. (Also says, charges might apply because I tried to unlock boot-loader)
This really sucks :-(. I was hoping they would suggest a offline method to update the phone myself.
Same error
Even I have the same problem.

Go to the service center and just tell them to update ur phone to the latest version. Don`t mention you will be unlocking the bootloader after tht...lolz...
I hope this helps...as if I cant find any offline method to update to 2.3.5 thn will go to the service center here in mumbai to update the phone
Well if the update isn't coming up then as others have said, take it to HTC and get them to update it I guess. Don't mention bootloader unlocking. Seeing as you didn't actually flash anything to your phone, they won't know.

Either you do that or try and find an official RUU installer for your device and region. I'm searching right now but I can't find it. You need an official exe file, if you can find that for the Indian 2.3.5 update you can do it yourself.
Otherwise, you would have to get S-OFF, that's your only real alternative. For that you need a special clip and it might just be easier to go to HTC and get it done.
