How can you specify which Name should be displayed when linking contacts in WP7?
According to MS this should be possible (see ***.microsoft.com/windowsphone/en-us/howto/wp7/people/link-two-or-more-contacts.aspx)
"When you link two or more contact cards that have different profile pictures or names, you can choose which picture and name will represent the whole. To learn how, see Add a picture to a contact."
But there is only a description for the contact picture, not for the names...
Does anybody know how to do that?
Cheers

Open the desired contact and then tap "edit" in the bottom bar. Right beneath the profile picture you'll find "name". Tapping that opens a form where you can enter first name, last name etc. That name will be displayed in your contacts hub according to the settings you made for how your contacts are shown (last name first and so on).
Thanks for your reply, but i doesen't quite answer my question. I know that I can edit this information, but thats not what i want.
I'll try to be a bit more specific:
I have a Windows Live contact with the name 'abcd' and an Outlook contact with the name 'Aaaa, Bbb'. On my phone i linked these two contacts (since they represent the same real person). But my phone always uses the name from the Live contact. When I edit the image, i can choose if i want the image from the Live account or from the Outlook contact (and from what i understand from the MS doc this should be possible for the name as well).
-> the only workaround I found so far, is to delete the name entry form the live contact. (Contact -> edit -> edit Windows Live -> delete)
Can't test it right now (on a different phone) but it depends on what linked profile comes first.
For example I link a Live and Facebook contact and to show the Live name, it needs to be the first one... if any of that made sense.

Yeah,... I know what you mean, but the live contact is always the first in the list. It doesn't matter if I select the Outlook contact first and then add a link to the Live contact or the other way round.
Can you reorder them?
Something not quite right linking contacts.
Linking contacts seems only half implemented.Ive also had this problem, renaming the linked contact card only works sometimes, but always renames the first linked contact, I dont wont that. Also there does nt seem to be any logic to which name it chooses for the card.I ve stopped linking contacts anyway because in text messages you get several message threads from the same person with no idea of what number its from to text or call back ( if they have more than one mobile number ). Lastly I would like to be able to rename the catergory of the number ( Mobile,Company, etc ).Because I would like moblie 2 or Work Moblie.I Hated having to look at the phone numbers all the time to decide which one is right to use.

Sorry if I can't see it on my WP7 device atm, but I do remember being able to use the Facebook profile first and the Live profile came second.... have ya tried open Outlook contact, press link and then chose the Live contact ?
im not quite sure what u mean but here goes:
if you have 2 contacts. One is named ABC and the other one is AB. If you want to link them both but keep the ABC name, then you need to go to ABC and link it with AB.
Similarly if you want to keep the AB name, then u need to go to AB and link it with ABC.

Dear Vijay,
Can we file two mobile nos for a single contact? assume that all other fields viz home1.2, Work1.2 etc are already occupied
hdubli - if all available number fields are full, then not easily. If you need that many telephone numbers, you could write a custom plugin or app that would store a string of telephone numbers in a text string with a seperator, eg:
+44 7870 XXX | +359 12345 | +69 546
etc. Then, save that text string in a relatively unused number or text field (eg Home Fax?) in Pocket Outlook, and have your custom plugin present an interface to choose which number from the string to dial/select, eg dial second number in the list. Your app would then parse out the second number from the list.
That would work and be relatively operating system consistent. But, it would have to be a custom written app.

Thanks for the reply,
Is it possible that I store the Phone nos with the sepertors as informed above and dial from contacts? You know any app else can u make such app...I am not good in coding as u are..
hdubli - I've never seen an app that can do it, and a custom plugin would have to be written to dial from contacts in this way.
I could possibly write it, but it would take time I don't have right now - do you really have that many phone numbers to store per contact?
If you've hit the limit (9 phone numbers per contact I think), try saving the contact twice, eg
Vijay (1) with 9 contact numbers
Vijay (2) with another 9 contact numbers = 18
It's not perfect, but it's easier for me

That's right...Just tell me can we add a custom field in the Outlook so that when we sync it adds that field in our device...
So this important 'FileAs' omission has been a problem for about 2.5 years, yet MS still haven't had the time to fix it? I am impressed
Yup, fileas is a pain in the ass, as with many of the problems with Windows Mobile and Smartphone: however, I guess we basically have to live with the problems. I lose count of how many bugs have never been fixed.
Oh, hdubli sorry for the slow response. As far as I know, we can't add custom Pocket Outlook fields.

It's so a shame that more 4 years have passed and there's no solution for this yet that I had to ressurrect this old, old thread.
Now in WM 6.1 there's still no default setting for 'File as' contacts. Plus I also have to complain about how WM phones display area codes.
It annoys me a lot because all these default settings seem to be made for U.S., but in most other places we choose to remember the first name and not the family name of our friends, and also 3-digit area codes don't apply.
This will fix them all at once... found it floating around
finally
works great!! (may need restart)
install
programs >> contact fix
set it as you like
done
BIG thanks (searched for a way to resolve this problem, weeks)

The |last name, first name| filing was probably used for business purposes. You would have many contacts that are not necessarily your friends and you would look them up by last name.
Would be nice to change it...
Hi guys, my question might sound stupid as I'm new to windows mobile, but I can't seem to be able to find a way to insert more than 1 similar type of contact details under the same contact.
Say for eg I use 2 mobile numbers or 2 landline numbers, but when I try to save them under the same contact head I just get 1 option for each type of contact. Surprisingly I couldn't find any option to edit my own label as well. Any idea what could be done in this scenario???
Isn't there any solution to my question???
I face the same issue...
any suggestion?
Try put those numbers into other fields, such as "work2 tel", "home2 tel"... Some 3rd party softwares can do that but their fields are not compatible with MS Outlook on PC.
Well, thats not a solution, is it? Thats just ignoring an issue... I know I can save in other fields but if I try to transfer some contacts from my s60 where I have stored them properly then the 2nd entry gets deleted automatically, thats annoying & I dont even know how many of my contacts has already been messed up like that.... Pheww...!!!
Windows Mobile takes contacts as it is defined in MS Outlook. And by design Outlook takes only one contact Information. Theres no other solution.

Outlook supports 2 Business numbers, 2 Home numbers, 1 Mobile number plus a bunch of other numbers like Other and Company. Try adding your extra fields in Outlook and then sync to your phone, hopefully the extra numbers will appear in your contact record. Just use the drop-down selector in Outlook to pick the fields you want to view and fill them in.
Yeah that seems a good idea, will give that a try...
I've searched XDA high and low (and the rest of the interweb) and can't find anything that seems to answer my question....
I'd like to tweak the information that Sense displays for contacts. When I am in a person's contact screen, I can see all their phone numbers, email addresses, groups, but I particularly would like to see their company name. There are a couple of contacts for which I only have first names, and the only way to tell the 2 "Tony"s apart is by company name. As it stands right now, I have to click "Edit contact" and scroll all the way down to see the company name.
It seems like it should be pretty straight forward to get this information on to the contact screen.... I'm sure other people would like to see birthdays, or mailing addresses, without having to hit "edit contact".
I'd rather not use a 3rd party contact manager (although I guess HTC Sense technically is 3rd party), I really do like HTC Sense contacts.
Is this in the wrong forum? If so, please move it, mods... Thanks!
I've been wondering this too.
I've been looking for the same information too. On my contact list, companies don't even show up. They are listed as <Unnamed> on the list and I have quite a few of them, but since I don't have a Contact name associated with them, I don't even know whose number is whose.
If you find any mods that address this, let me know. I'll let you know if I do. Or if anyone reads this and has found a solution, please let us know!
Don't know if this helps but- for Windows Mobile Users
I have the same question, and am searching for an answer as well, however, if you use the WINDOWS contact manager, which is seperate from the SENSE manager, you will see the company names as well. If you want to access the Windows version, use the start menu, and select contacts.
you can accomplish this by changing the "file as" setting under the winmo contacts and then it will show up in Sense the way you want it. You have to edit the contact in the "winmo contacts" and select the name as if you are going to edit it to get the "files as" option.
I also found a simple utility called "fileaschanger" but cannot find the thread so I'm attaching the cab. It allows you to change the "file as" setting for ALL your contacts in one step.
There is also this other utility but I have not tried it yet. http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-contact-utilities-v1-0b.html
In addition to the company name, I would like to see the Notes field and fax numbers. I may be the only one but it annoys me that I have to hit "Edit Contact" to get more info. The should have just labeled this "More info"
Does anyone know how to view your contact list by their "Nickname" you set in the People app? How do you get the Nickname to show up when receiving a call from someone, rather than their First and Last name. I'm looking through the menu and there only seems to be an option for First name and Last name. Maybe there's an app in the Marketplace that gives you extended options?
When close family members call me, I'd rather it show "mom cell" or "dad cell" as opposed to their formal first and last names. I could just put Mom Cell, in the Name field of the contact card, but this will disrupt my gmail Contacts list when I go to use a desktop.
It seems like a lapse in android or htc's software for this feature to be absent. Anyone have any ideas?
What I do is make a new contact named Mom and then I sync it to her facebook then I click it and edit it and change the name from the drop down menu from her real name to Mom

When defining relationships within contacts, I can never pick my own contact. When editing my own contact, I can not even add a relationship field. I can define relationships between other contacts, but can not define anything for myself.
How can I define my own relationships? I know I can use Ok Google to chose contacts to call when telling it to call my spouse for example, but how can I actually store that information within her profile like I can for all other contacts other than my own?
What relationship do you have with yourself? Friend? Spouse? Family?
It's you, you do not have a relationship with yourself
The reason you can add relationships to other contacts is because that field is what relationship YOU have with them
So for wife you would put "Spouse" as that is your relationship with her
You would not have anything to add to your own contact unless you married yourself
The reason you can add relationships to other contacts is because that field is what relationship YOU have with them

But that would mean that I would have to be able to select myself in that list when defining relations - and that's not possible.
So all I can do is define relations between other contacts. For example I can edit my spouses profile, chose father and select my spouses fathers contact and that will work.
So for wife you would put "Spouse" as that is your relationship with her

Simply chosing spouse without entering any name does not work - and my own contact is not available to select.
Am I missing something here?
Btw, I am using the default Samsung Contacts, not Google Contacts if that makes a difference.

Sorry yes you are right (partially), I remembered it wrongly, you can choose a contact to add as a relationship to another contact, but you can also choose yourself as that contact
I've just added myself as brother to my brothers contact, and also spouse to my gf's contact
It did however use my Gmail contact, not the one I have saved as my own main contact on the phone
Try adding yourself as a contact to your Google contacts first
(Also using Samsung contacts app)
When in my own main contact for myself, it has an option "My Relationships" under the main picture, with a + in a circle to add people to, I have added my gf as spouse to my own contact and it works fine, when you hit the + to add more, it opens your contact details where you can add multiple relationships

I agree with Detection, all of your contacts orbit around you. You define all other contacts in your universe and how close an orbit they have near you. You are the center of the universe. You are the all important one. Your contacts bow to your omnipotent awesomeness.
