Samsung build quality compared to Galaxy S, S II - Samsung Infuse 4G

How does the Infuse compare in build quality to the Galaxy S and S II? I had a Vibrant (almost spitting image of a regular Galaxy S) and it was squishy and the rim was loose. Have they significantly improved the design since then?
Edit:
Had a few more questions. The Galaxy S was very color saturated. I heard the Galaxy S II was less so, and thus the same goes for this phone. Is that true? Is there a way to lower saturation like how the Galaxy S II can in the settings, or maybe a tweak? Also, I heard you can increase the audio bitrate and sample in the galaxy s II. Same for the infuse? The audio capture on all these samsung devices leaves a lot to be desired.
Edit: Might as well ask this here also. Does it support 1080p video playback natively? What about through HDMI?

Infuse 4g has a really solid and high end feel, believe me when you hold it you will be impressed with the build quality, everyone that held my phone was impressed. The back cover has a nice texture and only way to tell that its plastic is to take it off. I have used galaxy s before and this phone is much better build quality, so light and thin but really solid.

Build quality is great..yeeess it plastic but no creaks..and this thing is so thin you will want a case to hold on to it...get a good case...and screen protector...use the hell out of it.. Then throw it on craigs list in 8 to 12 months or when ever you are ready to switch it out. . Keep it scratchless to help your next phone purchase?

Was wondering if this has a glued on rim that sticks out the side like the original galaxy s? The Infuse chrome sides seem to be one whole piece that wraps around to the front around the glass and there's no extra glued on rim? The galaxy s ii however kind of looks like it has a glued on rim but it sticks out less than the original galaxy s? I hate glued on rims! Tell me this doesn't have any!

No glued on rim..case it screen protect ut sell it in 6 months rinse repeat

More questions moved to first post.

It is very solid. And don't listen to the complaints about the flimsy battery cover. It actually isn't that bad and still feels kind of solid when you take it off.

it is a rugged plastic. dont think the ispire is better because it is heavy. but what i will say is that im sure the infuse is more damage prone than the captivate. what samsung really deserves credit on is the fit and finnish. the pieces all fit with no gaps and the plastics samsung uses are quite strong and crack resistant. the way the back cover is held on requires alot of precision. there is no excuse for the gaps i see in motorola phones.
im not sure why samsung decided on those stupid slip covers for the battery door on half the sgs line but it made a well made phone look and feel cheap. on the other hand they weren't stupid enough to put antennas in there (im looking at you htc aria and incredible)

I'm very happy with my infuse. I held out as long as I could waiting for the galaxy s2, if it even comes to att. Ill rock this phon for the summer at least than hook up the next good phone. Suppose I could just sell my iphone 4 and use that to buy my next phone and keep the infuse. The screen is sick.

i was worried at first. its very light and its pretty much all plastic. ive been worried most about that tinted chromed plastic around the edges as ive had that on previous phones and thats always the easiest and first things to scratch and break apart. the one on my tp2 was made of dry bread crumbs. i did drop my phone for the first time yesterday and it was a hell of a drop, i was sure i broke something but when it collected it, it didnt have a single scratch. cant say ill always be that lucky but it ticked a certain build quality check.

Look and Feel

What are your impressions of the look and feel of the device so far. I am coming from a Vibrant and in my opinion the device felt cheap because it was so light and plasticy.
The G2x feels well built and feels good in my hand. I also like how the power button is on the top rather than the side like it was on the Vibrant. The device is the same exact colors as my Touch Pro 2 was. T-Mobile sure does love this color design which I like as well. It looks very professional.
I'm coming from a galaxy s series phone as well. This phone has me thinking that the bigger screen on the Sensation might be a good size.
But yeah, this one is cool. Feels like its built much better than the galaxy s series.

coming from a MT4G and that felt like a solid phone but this feels much better with the large screen and the way its beveled on the sides...
Coming from a NS this phone looks a lot more professional. The NS is still my favorite design hands down, bit this device looks and feels more solid. Love the metal bezel and the curved glass edges. Can't wait to get my pouch from amazon so I could take off this stock screen protector. The placement of the power button takes some getting used to, but it's the most solid device I've ever owned.

After being a lurker for so long, I finally decided to post hahaha. Anyways, came from Eris to the G2X, and the build quality on the G2X is superb. I particularly like the power and volume buttons; no wiggle, they click very nicely, and seem to be very durable. The phone itself has a perfect weight to it, managing to feel solid while at the same time not bulky. All in all, excellent design from LG.
I went from the Nexus One to the HD7 and that thing was the cheapest feeling plastic phone I ever had...
Now it feels like I have a real solid phone again!
Sent from my LG-P999
I'm coming from the MyTouch 3G Slide which felt terribly plastic and flimsy. If you dropped it the battery door would always pop off and the corners would get gouged. The G2x is a solid feeling phone it feels really good in hand. I am loving the design of this phone it looks professional and its just overall a solid built device.
I am coming from a Vibrant and it felt very plasticy and cheap. Sure it was light but thats cause the whole phone was plastic. Personally I like a little weight to my phones. I had the HD2 prior to the Vibrant and I liked the weight but I thought the screen size was a little too big. So overall I love the feel of the G2X, new fav!
i truly enjoy the look and feel of the back of the phone. This is my 1st phone using the "naked" no case look and the stock back has a rubber like feel to it. I dont see me dropping it accidently unless im just..........actually no i dont think ill be dropping it at all

Yeah, the back of the phone is nice. That camera hump was a turn-off initially, but now that I'm using the phone I'm glad it's there. It's not as obtrusive as one would think and it helps re-adjust the phone when in your hand.
I also figured when putting a case on this phone, the cut-out for the camera may "level things out" a bit? I kinda like using it without a case though.

Why so much buzz on plastic body for s4

Well i have been reading around the comments of the people about , how silly samsung is for making s4 all plastic when there are other phones with a good overall build quality.
Well i wont compare it with the sales of samsung but i think they have other reasons. Well i agree that metal always looks and feel great. But dont u think that plastic body is much durable. Well i have never seen any phone breaking in 2 years. People with s2 s3 notes are allbhappy with their phones. Just some scratch issues. So its bearable.

definitely a big plus for samsung here is that if you do damage your case, you can just buy a new one.
if i had a GS4 i definitely wouldn't be using a 3rd party case for that reason.
my problem is that the plastic used by samsung in the gs3 and probably the gs4 is that while it may be durable - im sure it is - it just looks cheap, and that matters to me
my HTC incredible s is plastic, but its like rubberised plastic, and i think its great - it feels nice and durable, non-slippy and i think it feels like a good quality material - maybe thats just me
Actually samsung is so successful with ita galaxy line. That they are so scared of trying even a little change to it. Just like apple was scared to change ios. So they will make money from this same strategy, same looks and builds until sales drop. Till then we all have to agree with their plan.

Mostly anal OCD types who really should not care because people who are THAT concerned about "wearing" these devices probably spend a lot more on Otter Boxes and "screen protectors" and never see the case or use the smooth glass. All the moaning about metal vs plastic is fun to read though.
Those of us who USE the phones without cases and "protectors" could not care less about metal or plastic and may even prefer the lighter plastic. We care about what is INSIDE...not outside. These are not "fashion statements"

Most peoples argument is, it's a flagship device and every part of it should feel 'premium' and plastic just doesn't...
The S4 body is polycarbonate (no different than devices like the Lumia 920 or the One X, except for the finish). The front of the device is Gorilla Glass 3 and the inside of the device is a magnesium frame like their previous devices (lighter and more durable than aluminum).

. "Flagship" is a matter of ones own definition Flagship to me is still the Note 2 . I don;t see anything in the S4 that trumps my Note 2. In this case the note 2 is the flagship device still. There are no rules for "flagship" devices. They are only flagship because they are the latest not the prettiest. Plastic for a device one may keep a whole year is a good business decision. Samsung will sell millions of them as usual. More than "flashy metal" Sonys and HTCs.

Metal may be stronger, however is does a piss poor job of absorbing impact and doesn't sprint back to it's original state. I would rather have the plastic absorb the impact than the circuits in the phone taking a beating. I skin all my stuff anyone so I am not worried about scratches.
so what about the sides where S4 has metal? Will that not pick up scratches/nicks or not bend when it will fall?
Or is that it is ok where Samsung deems it ok and not where it doesnt.
In any case, I've seen many drop tests on youtube and S3 seems to do far worse than iphone5. shame on Samsung

I might be wrong but from what I have read that is not metal around the sides it is also plastic coated to look like metal just like the GS3.
I'm the type that puts the invisibleshield on
the screen and the phone in an Otterbox Defender case. Mostly because I like the heavy durable feel. But also because I like to keep the phone in near mint condition. Then when the case cracks or looks crappy I rock the phone naked. Right now my Samsung Captivate is naked and in awesome condition for being so old. I like having a scratch free phone after several years of use. To me it's like insurance, figure if I'm going to keep it a few years, which I do for ipods and phones, I may as well protect the investment.
I could go either way with plastic or aluminum. Both have their ups and downs, so I don't gripe about either. Plastic doesn't dent like aluminum, but aluminum helps dissipate heat better.
I also hate the feel of my wedding ring against a steel phone when fishing it out of my pocket. Small, but to me it makes me cringe. Like nails on a chalk board.

Can we really say that metal is better that plastic? If it was true, why did they invented it?
Here’s a little story.
Two men are on a battlefield, first man’s name is Harold Thomas Campbell (Lets call him H.T.C. for short) and the second man is called Samuel Forsyth (Let’s call him S4 for short). The two men are given the choice of two high tech armors. One is metal armor, the other is polycarbonate (light weight bulletproof) armor. H.T.C. takes the metal one and S.4. takes the polycarbonate. H.T.C. starts laughing at S.4. and said, "Your armor doesn't look premium". S4 reply “let’s see on the battlefield”. It’s the final battle against their sworn enemy, the terrible Icarus Fontana (let’s just call him ifon for short). The fight begun. Ifon brings his large army of magic metal robots. They have the power to mesmerize inferior minds. HTC and S4 are in smaller number but their android army can adapt to any situation. The battle is long and furious. Ifon is sending his elite guard called, #5. The #5 gives a quick scare but the android army counter all #5 efforts. During the battle the high tech armors starts to lose power, so S4 quickly removes his back panel and changes his power source. H.T.C.’s power is getting dangerously low but his heavy metal armor doesn’t allow him to replace the power source. He needs to find an electrical outlet nearby. H.T.C. and S4 receive many hits. HTC’s armor is all dented and scratched but still resist. S4’s armor looks untouched. The battle is raging on and S.4. is killing enemies at an incredible pace. S4 is trying to help HTC but the armor is just too low on power and too heavy to carry. HTC dies on the battlefield. Ifon’s army is retreating. S4 won this fight but the battle is not over.

Yes about the feel metal feels premium, but if we talk in terms of quality and durability, i would definitely say that plastic is nore durable. Plus who uses his phone for more than 2 years.

This is the thing dude. When you are already having dream success and that too in a hell of a competitive environment, you don't really need to change things all over. Just imagine apple today decides to bring major open source changes in ios like android or major changes in design, more than half of the customers will dislike it. It's because they are used to this closed environment. Hence making major changes with just 1 phone is not that easy.
Samsung has already replied to this criticism. Plastic is easy to make in mass production and its durable. Like it or not but it will be like this. To shut the mouth, Samsung is giving hell of other things in both software and hardware department. This should be enough to please us.

Would you pay a premium for an Aluminum version of the Galaxy S4?

One of the biggest and most enduring complaints against the Galaxy S phones is their cheap feeling, plastic build quality and lack of premium materials. The plastic build is quite functional, and has many merits like high yields, good reception, removable battery, etc., but many people still have reservations about jumping onto the Galaxy bandwagon, especially those coming from HTC or Apple phones, or just plain have a strong dislike for plastic on their smartphones and want a premium metal one instead. They know they will be losing conveniences like a removable battery or removable storage, experience minor problems like signal attenuation and easy scuffing and scratches, have a slightly thicker and heavier phone, but are willing to make the compromise for the rigidity and the luxuriousness of a cold metal slab in their hand.
Samsung is no stranger to making aluminum phones, like the Samsung Wave, Omnia, etc. They will also invariably make a million different phones based on the Galaxy S4 design, phone names ending in Note, Ace, Mini, Star, Plus, Grand, Duos, etc. Would it be so difficult for one of these releases to be an aluminum version of the S4? Not only will you quickly silence critics and enamor fans who have been beseeching you for this very thing, you will be increasing your dominance over the smartphone world by converting many an Apple and HTC fan and winning over a whole demographic of people who have previously shunned your phones. It may be a minority, but it is a sizable and vocal minority that will translate to great sales and great publicity for the Galaxy brand. You won't need high yields, carrier deals, or special engineering and design that you didn't already possess from past phones. You can sell it online unlocked with few barriers. No need for LTE either. It doesn't have to be grand or breathtaking. It just needs to be metal. As mentioned above, we are willing to make the compromises, which we find quite minor, as long as the best parts of the S4 stay intact like the screen, camera, and processor. Please consider granting the request of a longtime Samsung user (as far back as the 5MP G600 slider) and countless others who want an aluminum Galaxy S4.

I like this thread
If sammy makes an aluminium S5 (not gonna happen with S4), then i'll be cool with it. But the plastic doesn't bother me one bit, i would love however, a design change and the polycarbonate to be as good and rigid as the One X. Thats very good plastic right there.
Its true that samsung could use a different type of material and gain even more customers, but the plastic hasnt stop galaxy s sales one bit, actually it looks like the demand for the S4 is 4 times the S3 demand in the UK (dont quote me on that). A more premium device is always better, no question about it, but samsung does such a great job with the software, features and cutting edge spes that it does more than make up for it.
So....$900 for a phone? (Already costs $800). No thank you. No need to spoonfeed sammy. They already make tons of profits out of this phone.

If Samsung overhauled touchwiz and used materials which when you picked up the phone you thought wow this feels great then count me in I would buy one without hesitation.
Paying a premium price for a phone should mean the phone feels premium and not some cheap plastic toy.

I find it rather amusing when others insult people who like what they don't like. "I hate x game, but you like it, so you must be a loser!"
To the OP: Depends on the cost. I live in the U.S., so if it's still a subsidized cost of $199.99/299.99 -ish (for respective internal storage), then I would definitely consider it. That seems doubtful though, so probably not.
I would prefer buying a back cover worth $20, rather than paying samsung an extra $100 for a new design. I am not at all bothered by the material or design, I know I will get used to it within a day and after that all I will need is solid performance and new features

^This times 100 million, the S4 is gonna be the most fun phone to use, the material and design arent issues for me either, actually i like it a lot.
Yes. Cheap plastic bothers me a lot, while HTC One, Xperia Z, iPhone and even N4 feels and looks premium. Even only aluminium (real) trim on sides would be already great and not painted plastic, which cracked on sgs3 without reason.
Other thing I dont like is lack of sources, but I guess i9505 will be better than my current phone in that view.
With premium design and materials I would already ordered i9505, but now Im still not sure. I will order it if Motorola X wont be launched on Google I/O or if it wont be as good as I hope for.

The plastic don't bother me at all, for goodness sake Coca-cola cans are made out of aluminium. in fact its much more sturdier than S3, what's inside matters a lot to me(CPU/GPU, RAM, I/O speed) and i believe it has the best hardware compared to the HTC One and Xperia Z, and besides repairs is a doodle too. I wish anyone repairing a HTC One without warranty a very goodluck.

Can't deny that plastic is more durable but I think with the price premium good old sammy are charging people expect a phone to be made out of aluminium or glass but there are of course limitations with removable battery covers when it comes to using materials like that.

I will personally prefer carbon fibre or some ceramic material to call premium, aluminium/plastic is too common and cheap to make, glass is cheap too and fragile, but that's just me. I think carbon fibre with removable battery will just be awesome. Another thing is the AMOLED display and DDR3 RAM are premium components compared to LCD/DDR2.
Don't like glass covered smartphones they are just so damned fragile!
If possible the body of my next smartphone should be made out of rubber, so when I drop it on a stone floor, it just bounce back into my hand
BTW I don't think Sammy take the biggest bite of this cake... retailers do!

Would love a carbon fiber smartphone.
I wouldn't pay extra, because I find polycarbonate (which is only the back cover) used more then adequate for normal period of phones life 2-3 years for most people. If need be, one can always buy aftermarket metal or glass back cover and as a bonus get thermal or reception issues.
Sure it is nice to hold aluminum, but definitely not a must have for me. I would pay premium to have removable plastic back cover where I can access battery and sd card. Since battery is not likely to survive even 2 years of every day charging. And paying half-a-new-phone and sending it somewhere to get battery changed is just incredibly impractical.
Not to even get started on having all glass phone... We all know whose idea that was, but even Apple doesn't do it any more. I find absolutely no positive in all glass phone. Only looks, maybe...

Exactly, I never had a feeling of my phone not being no.1 most premium device, if not prior, then at the 1st look at its full RGB amoled screen. For me there's no going back to any other display tech. And this is my first amoled as well as Samsung phone. Before I only had Samsung tablet and Htc and Nokia phones.

If Samsung overhauled touchwiz and used materials which when you picked up the phone you thought wow this feels great then count me in I would buy one without hesitation.
Paying a premium price for a phone should mean the phone feels premium and not some cheap plastic toy.

I second that.
Samsung are overpricing S4 way to expensive, I wouldn't pay that much for a Premuim build phone never mind cheap plastic. Samsung are taking the mick that's why I jumped ship.
Aluminium, glass means no buy for me, Lesson already learned. Aluminum only looks good at the beginning, but tends to look way worse after few months.
But this is actually really interesting topic:
There should be 2 galaxies s4 - one as it is, with removable polycarbonate back cover and other say with aluminum.
Would you pay, say +50eur to have s4 made of (unibody) aluminum or glass and have inaccessible battery?
I wouldn't. And I wonder which would sell better.

S4 Build Quality : Plastic > Aluminum

I've had all sorts of Android phones. I loved all the metal ones (Moto and HTC) and stuck with the Galaxy for the developer community, camera, and not getting rid of SD cards and removable batteries. Although my next upgrade batteries and internal memory should be good enough to let that go. I loved the One but 4 MP is 4 MP when your not indoors at night.
I won't let any comments on build quality bother me again. Forget shattering in my pocket, I have dropped my GS4 numerous times with zero effect. I use a $10 case. And now, I ran it over with my car. On concrete. The kind with tar and rocks all in it. Diagonally, straight over the entire phone with tire tracks on it.
Zero damage to screen, all sensors work normally, not even a scratch on the case or screen or edges. And it even popped out of the case while being run over. I guess it's true there is a reason they use plastic for heavy duty stuff in commercial tools and equipment, and aluminum is soda can material.
See attached pics.
Ya and function is more important than appearance anyways

Haha I love it. I dropped mine the day after I got it and almost broke down on the floor until I realized that nothing actually happened to it.

Plastic is fine with me, every phone, plastic or metal will break if the screen lands just right. Despite all the claims to the contrary, I find the S4 to be great. The video below should debunk most nay sayers.

I completely agree that plastic > metal for phone cases. A metal case on a phone is a serious MINUS to me.

Wow. I'm even happier now that I chose this over the One.
i kept reading reviews about the s4 about lower end build quality this, plastic lower build quality that, etc. etc.... but have been impressed by how the phone feels. feels solid. i am constantly amazed how that little thin plastic back clicks in so well and feels so solid. main reason i chose the s4 over the htc one is accessible sd card slot and battery. that's it. i'll take this kind of plastic build over unibody metal every time if it means i get to put in myown sd card and be able to switch batteries.
I got the One at launch and just got an S4 a week ago, was trying to decide which to keep... Picked up my One last night after using S4 all week and it suddenly felt heavy and clunky. I'm keeping the S4.
Fan boy thread. You must be out of your mind if you really believe what You wrote in the title. Who would not want an aluminum s4!

I'm in the same boat, been using the One for a month or so and picked up a GS4 during the half off sale. While my decision will come down more to software than hardware (need to find the right ROM for GS4, still working through this Loki stuff >.<), I definitely prefer the in-hand feel of the One. At a mm or so less wide and having a curved back, it just feels like it fits better to me. I have found that the weight is basically a nonissue, though I know some people get really worked up one way or the other.
As for plastic vs. metal, obviously people who say "plastic is flimsy" are way off, as it is very sturdy, but the One definitely looks nicer after a day of use than the GS4--the glossy finish on the GS4 just soaks up fingerprints like there's no tomorrow. I guess most people use cases, but I've always been a naked-in-pocket kind of guy so that's my biggest beef with the GS4's shell. I wish Samsung would just use a nice matte polycarbonate like some of the Lumias or the One X.
Oh well, it's still a fun debate.

I would not. Every metal devices I've owned have at least one scratch. I will not set my metal tablet down on a table because it would scratch. Plastic doesn't scratch or chip.

I'd get a plastic One over a metal S4 lol selling phones its easy to see how much more fragile unibody and metal framed phones are than multi pieced plastic ones. I hope Samsung never moves to unibody or metal
sent from just the tip
how did nobody take the time to ask OP HOW THA HECK DID YOU RUN YOUR S4 WITH YOUR CAR????
To the guy who called this a fanboy post: I've owned every major brand of android phone of all materials and my wife bought an HTC 8x at my suggestion. I clearly stated I got the s4 assuming build quality to be something I had to deal with. I felt the need to post because I ran it over with a 3500 lb car. That's not fanboy. That's credit.
And yeah I ran it over leaving the lake packing my car lol I set it down on the ground and got my kid, dog, and stuff in. Stupid but true. I'm aware I got lucky but I've ruined phones doing far less. Including my aluminum OG Droid. My wife's 8x shattered on the first drop with a polycarb body. My opinion stands, stupidity and all.

Why do people complain about build quality if there going to use a case?

Is it just me or does it this annoy you to? when people are comparing phones and lets say for example the galaxy s4 to something like the HTC one. They would say the galaxy s4 is made out of plastic and the HTC one medal. They say the HTC ones build i hands down better. Now why does that matter if 4 out of 5 people with each phone will put a otter box case or something else on it.

It could potentially impact the durability of the phone I suppose, but I agree, it's largely irrelevant. People will just take any reason they can find to try to prove that their phone of choice is the 'best'.
I got a Lumia 521 for $79 (total cost) which is about the worst in build quality. Got the best case I could find for it and it helped tremendously. So this can work for you also. Hide low build quality with a decent case!
Really, the only concern I have with build quality is how sturdy the phone is. I'm a clumsy guy and I'm prone to drop my phone a bit. I want to know then when I drop the phone, it will stay in one piece. Maybe even be resistant to scratches/dents. The last think I want is for the thing to shatter like brittle glass.
Other than that, a case will hide any shortcomings.

i personally prefer a plastic device with removable barttery and sd card slot than a full metal body with these limitations. it would be best though if samsung replaced the plastic on the next S flagship with aluminum(something like htc sensation). however this would mean to return to square one and redesign everything, therefore making it more expensive. i believe that they don't want to risk their good sales and do something that may leave a scar on their reputation. in addition, i don't know of any samsumng device made of metal, so it would be a huge change for them.
we, as users, would have to take into account some other disadvantages of a metal body. i put an sgs3 in a metal locker and it lost almost all the signal, it even missed a few calls, it caused huge battery drain (when in low signal area devices lose batteruy faster) so the antennas will have to be placed accordingly. plus, scratches and marks are more visible on metal, you can't really put a plastic case on a metal device(in most cases it is really inestethic, imho. but it depends on the case), hard cases can affect connectivity and if dust or sand is caught between the phone and the case it will produce nasty marks on the phone.
so, practically, plastic devices are better. it's just the common opinion that they look and feel cheap. i look forward to reading further replies on this matter.

The reason I love my s4 is the removable battery. if I know I'm going to need it I use my 7500 mAh battery if not I use my stock battery. I hate when people say its made of plastic. So then I show them my extended battery and then they become amazed LOL

yea
bcs the sucks ball n too judgemental mayb haha kidding its just their personal preferences n still some tend to use phones/tabs witht tab n they've enjoyed/used to using/holding devices with premium quality thats y they complain it feels like sth missing
case quality
I'm always amazed at how expensive some cases are - £30 for a case is really unreasonable imo. My I9000 was protected really well in a £3 case I bought off eBay!
I think it does not matter, but my Sony Xperia P is constructed of metal, and in my opinion it feels better than plastic:fingers-crossed:
How is it possible to be so much expensive! I pay only US$20 for mine. I use switcheasy colours. nice to touch, but only last 1 year and then cuts appeared in case. had to get new 1. sorry for any bad english.

Simply because casing adds bulk to the device. If the build is great, there is no need to use any case at all because we are assured that it is fine with heavy duty usage ang rough environment.
It's usually Apple fans that claim Android phones have poor build quality...and then put their delicate iPhones in a protective case.
Sent from my SGH-I747M using xda app-developers app
Well Iphones are meant to have 'superior build quality' but I think that is debatable
Brand new they look amazing, with a bit of use, not so much. I suppose it all depends on the care taken by the user, but my personal experience with Iphones holding their looks isn't great. My Iphone 4 had numerous scratch marks on the glass. My Iphone 5 was covered with marks on the bezel.
Whilst my samsung phones didn't look as premium, they didn't mark up like the Iphones.
If build quality is based purely on durability, I don't know if a phone being metal makes a difference. If it's based purely on looks, perhaps, but then as I mentioned, the looks of a metal phone don't necessarily hold up.
Also on the subject of 'build quality'. I am definitely in the minority it seems, but I don't like the look of the silver HTC one. Sure it's aluminium, but for whatever reason I just don't think it looks that good? Just thought I would put it out there because everyone goes on and out about how good the HTC one looks
because people in their nature don't like to waste their hard earned $ on something made of chew-able toy plastics, especially far an expensive flagship phones
its like questioning or undermining everything fine in life, why do u pay for that expensive leather or well designed wallet, its just a wallet after all
or why do you pay good money for a good quality car with fancy dashboard, a crash is a crash after all
i am sorry but this makes no sense
justifying lack of taste or quality by the "case" argument is just like hiding your head in the sand
there real question is: Why is the richest Android builder of them all so dead cheap with it's loyal customers?
and the answer is: LEMONS
Alternative answer: it's all wasted on marketing
Stop justifying lemons, currently Samsung is sitting at the rock bottom when it comes to design or quality, you name it, Apple, Sony, HTC, LG, Nokia even Huwai are all building better than your (un)precious Samsung
Personally I couldn't care less what the phone is made of, because at the end of the day the phone is a productivity tool. What matters is what I can *do* with the phone, not what it looks like or feels like. I could understand if metal was more durable than plastic, but that is debatable. My phone is plastic and it's in the same shape as the day I bought it. My iPod touch is metal and has tons of scratches on the back. I've treated them the same.
The problem with phones made of metal is that they typically have a non-removable battery and many of them don't even have a microSD slot! When it comes down to form vs. function, I'm going to choose function every time.
It's about material choice and balance for the money spent.
Plastic is good, like the Nexus 5 but glossy plastic is bad as it is fingerprint magnet and fugly (S4). Aluminium also dents, Check out all the 6 months after of HTC One and iPhone.
Also price matters too, you don't wanna spend a lot of money just to get a cheap looking and feeling plastic.
And most people use cases but it's always good to have a great built quality inside.
A sound phone dwells within a sound built quality, and a sound case.

Build quality and using a case are 2 different issues, using a case doesn't mask the build quality....like poor headphone sockets that go wrong, or buttons that get stuck (hard to press).
Personally I always drop my phone - clumsy in nature! So have to have a case. Now i'm looking for one which has a battery built in to double my usage time for the Samsung S4. That chomps up battery like nobody's business. I am a heavy user to be fair. Just my 2 cents
