I decided to root my phone when it was announced that the Desire would not be getting the Gingerbread update. All went as expected & I successfully installed: Via Unrevoked: DeFroST 6.0j (AOSP FR83 + CyanogenMod).
While transferring music/data to the phone using the USB cable I accidently removed (actually tripped over) the cable.
Now my phone is displaying No SIM card and I can not access/mount my SD card.
I have no experience with 'poking' at my new phone, nor does my wife know what I have done. To top it all off 3 announced that the Desire WOULD be getting the Gingerbread update after all.
I request help. I also suggest that any response takes into a/c: I have very little knowledge & that time is not on my side.
Thanking you in advance :
Sounds to me like you've had a botched flash mate.
Try an RUU (Rom Update Utility) of the stock ROM that came on your Desire. You should be able to find it in the 'shipped ROMs' section of the Desire fora. An RUU is an official HTC ROM update that you flash using a computer.
Let me know how you get on.
Good luck!
As suggested I downloaded RUU & managed to get the USB driver working. However When installing the RUU I get error code 107. It prevents me from continuing the process.
Any further suggestions would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks Again.
What's the error message you're getting where it says 107? I can't recall ever seeing that (mainly get 2xx, 3xx ones) and can't find any info on it at all? What stage of the process are you up to?
Sorry for playing policeman with 20 questions!
Thanking you.
Apologies for not getting back sooner. Error code was 170. It was caused by downloading the incorrect RUU for my phone. DUH.
Anyways I didn't resolve the initial SIM & memory card issue but I did get the CORRECT RUU & sending it back to HTC for repair.
Thanks for taking the time & interest.
No worries mate, just glad to see you at least got some resolution! In my experience, HTC repair turnaround is quite good.

Hello everybody
My appologize if such kind topic is already posted but there is too much topic and I couldn't find relative information.
so, briefly I'll try to explain what was happened.
Month ago I've bought brand new HTC Desire S. Phone was bougt in Dubai, S-ON, Android 2.3.3
During update from android market (few games and facebook application, I clicked update all) my phone freezen, no reply at all.
I got desicion to remove battery and put it back. I've done it and phone switched on on white screen with HTC logo...that's all
Unfortunatelly, there is no any HTC customer service in our country, so I had to show my phone for another specialist. He recognized that boot file on my phone was corrupt, re-installed it. next step is to re-installe the software and here we met with problem.
no any software can be installed. I've used different software for different regions, but all of them were unsuccessful. initially it were shown two type of mistake
sometimes CID incorrect and sometimes Main version is older
we desided to install goldcart, so after installation is going ok, but again phone freezen on updating screen during bootloader update.
for info I've tried to install application from computer through the fastboot usb and through the memory card as well...both attepmts failed.
Does anybody can help me? Please consider that I'm not so perfect on such kind device and detailed explanation will highly appreciated. thanks in advance.
try install this RUU_Saga_hTC_Asia_WWE_1.48.707.1_Radio_20.28I.30.0 85AU_3805.06.02.03_M_release_199476_signed

That sounds like the fried eMMC chip. You updated all on the market and pulled the battery out. You'll have to find someone who can open the phone up and replace the chip (beat you to it Ben!)

return under warranty and get a replacement!
unfortunatelly, there is no sertificated HTC service in our country, so I need to send my phone to the Dubai..
Well the same exactly happened to me but luckily I was S-OFF & had Clockwork Recovery so everything was okay. I though that the eMMC chip was fried but I made a factory reset using Clockwork & it was solved.
I think you could just install a RUU that's certified from HTC, I would suggest that you download the WWE & If you tried that already try to access the the recovery screen (Vol Down + Power). If you couldn't access it then sorry, you're bricked.
Please reply with the results.
Can I also suggest that you rename your thread title to that it's a bit more meaningful and relevant to the problem that you're suffering, you do this by editing post #1 and using advanced edit.
to be honest I'm not so good in HTC...so fare problem not solved...but there is no any problem to get enter to the boot menu...if you pressing power with holding VOL down key phone goes to boot menu...
several people tried to solve the problem, but one of the restriction is S-ON mode...don't know what to do
Like the titles says, I bought a rooted phone from someone and it's messing up so now I'd like to take it back to factory settings 100% with the latest update, and unrooted as well. I'm currently frustrated to be honest...I've been trying to do this for the last 6 hours and it's not working out.
Recently my number has not been showing up when I call people it just shows as withheld/unknown, and also when people call me it always shows their numbers as unknown even if they are saved in my phone already. I was told at T-Mobile these problems are just part of the version software I'm running on my phone and I should update it.
I've tried doing the latest update through the phone and it will restart then be stuck on the screen with the little green guy sitting under a triangle with a orange exclamation mark inside of it. I took it to T-Mobile and they tried to install the latest software and eventually (after many times trying to update it) said I just need to go home and find the latest software update and install it via my computer to bring it back to 100% normal as they cannot do it without it being hooked up to my computer.
Where can I even download the latest firmware/whatever it's called and how would I do the updating with the phone connected to my computer? Is there a guide I can be linked to to explain updating rooting/unlocking/etc all in one thread?
If there are any specific threads that already have this information please link me, I haven't found anything that helps me thus far! Thanks ahead of time for your help with this everyone!

Thanks for the link and attempting to help me but I've just gone to start that process and I already have a problem with it. My HBOOT version is not listed on the websites supported HBOOT versions.
I have 1.17.1111 and it's not on the list of HBOOT versions, there is only a 1.17.0011. So what should I do now?
I need to unroot and uninstall anything that would effect this process firstly (I'm not sure how to do that either). I want to do a total wipe of everything and uninstall all modifications to phone as well, then I want to re-do the best ones. So I will need to be linked to a guide to do these as, obviously, I'm one of those stupid needy nubs roaming the forums. Also, how would I go about finding and downloading the latest t-mobile update (Android 2.3.4 / software version 1.50.531.1) for this phone? The guys at the store said there was a new one that just came out and that I'd need to download it and install it via computer.
Hello
The first thing you are gonna do is write supercid follow this link : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300 - step 4
This is so you can flash any RUU, you want and not to brick your device.
After that find the a RUU that matches your phone company : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074559
After that run it on your phone. When you have done that, you should be non-rotted, stock recovery(means that you can install updates from HTC), but you are still S-off. Now this is a very tricky a dangerous thing to do.
I have done it before, and I did it exactly as I am telling you to do. Now click on this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
And go to step 5, and do as exactly it says, when done, you should be s-ON and now your phone should be as It was new
That is what I did and nothing went wrong, but don't blame me if something goes wrong
Nvm, I think I might have it now.

I followed the links on there until it sends you to filefactory.com and gives you a SUPER slow download. I have a 16mb connection and it's downloading at 20kb/s which is going to make this take 4 hours as this is 389mb to grab this replacement.
Can you tell me of another place where I could download this where it allows faster downloads without having to pay for a membership to get this update?

Yeah, I finally got it to 1.50. It took a lot of trial and error and reading and re-reading though. I'm just happy its done finally now.
What's the best app to back up my phone like it is right now before I start trying to do other things to it?
What are considered the must have apps for the Sensation currently, or what are the coolest ones?
Can you add the beats audio to the regular Sensation? Or will it even effect the quality?

Hi everybody. I'm starting a new thread because there are quite a few issues on this phone and I wanted your help in understanding them.
I'm using an Orange HTC desire S which I bought from a local market in India. This was about six months back and it picked up my Vodafone sim easily so i presumed it had some kind of Sim unlocker.
PROBLEM 1
Fast forward to a few days back when I thought getting root access would be fun and would enable many more options. I booted into recovery mode and here is where the first problem kicks in.
When I boot using the volume + power button option, my phone tells me it's S-OFF and then proceeds(on its own) to a different menu. It shows two options only.
1. Device info
2. Clean S58 data
There's no way at all to return to the previous screen here on. It gets stuck here because option 1 gives me general data about the phone and option 2 runs what seems like the sim unlock problem, tells me there's no update and returns to the same menu. I'm always(2 attempts) left with only the battery pull option which invariably clears all the data on my phone and works like a hard reset.
I also tried this without the memory card and got stuck at the black screen with the red exclamation mark.
Can someone tell me what's wrong here and what I need to do to get root access.
PROBLEM 2
This is more of a confusion I face. Most of my friends using the Desire S have got the sense 3.0 update but my phone is still running on 2.1 and tells me it is up to date. On the forum, most people seem to have received the 2.3.5 and the 3.0 update. Why am I not getting it?
Is it because i'm not on the orange network or is it something else(like s off)?
What do i need to do to get the updates in India?
Thanks for reading.
Can someone tell me what's wrong and how I should proceed?

Sukrit, most of your answers are within your questions. I've highlighted them in Red...
First of all, just because you purchased it in India (Somewhere like Gaffar Market, etc) doesn't mean it's from HTC India. HTC software update doesn't look at what sim card you're using to allot upgrades to your phone... It localises you depending on the software shipped with the phone.
Secondly, your phone is an Orange branded device and unlocking stuff is usually more troublesome and dangerous on branded devices... As for the solution to PROBLEM 1 as posted by you, look inside your sd card for a file named PG88IMG.zip. If you find it, back it up on your pc and delete it from the sd card. See if that helps, as having an update zip on your memory card will force your bootloader to flash it whether you want it to do so or not... Let's call it the phone's "instinct" to flash the PG88IMG.zip if it finds it while in bootloader.
I also suggest you read the Guides in the general section carefully, especially the warning about branded devices... But since you say you're s-off, half the battle is already won and i think you'll be okay to root.
As for the battery pull, it does not reset your phone data my friend... your data will all be safe and all it does is a soft reset, NOT a hard reset. You are more likely to fry your eMMC chip doing that... and that would be a MUCH bigger problem, as i'm kinda sure your phone doesn't even have a distant cousin called "warranty"
Let me know if you found an update zip on your sd card like i mentioned above, and we'll pick it up from there.
Cheers. Hope i can be of help.
Thanks a lot for answering and helping me with my problem.

I've understood this but does it also mean that unless i'm on the Orange network, I won't get the update?
Also, great guess on where I got the phone from

I understand. There are two files that i think are relevant.
1. HTC-ANDROID-GOLD_CARD. I haven't put this in as far as I remember. Size-0 bytes.
2. PG88DIAG.nbh. I'm presuming this is the file you were talking about? There is a slight difference in name, though.

This is what is weird,Amit. If I pull the battery when the phone is at the device info and clear s58 data screen, it always hard resets. All software/contacts,basically anything on the phone memory disappears. Why does this happen?
If you think this behavior is normal then i'll remove the file in the memory card and try again.
Thanks a ton!

Why don't we start by removing the PG88DIAG file from the sd card (back it up on PC), and also the GOLD CARD file, which obviously was used by the nefarious Gaffar guys to s-off your phone...,
This will hopefully give you access to bootloader and fastboot so you can root and flash a custom recovery. Once you've done that, you can flash whatever ROM you like.
I'd recommend Endymion if you want the best possible sense 3.5 experience...
Let me know if removing those two files allows you to remain in bootloader and access recovery...
Hey Amit. Removing the two files has worked fine. Thanku
What steps should i take now to get root access?
Or, can I just load the orange ROM available on the other thread without rooting?

Congrats buddy!
Firstly, you cannot flash a custom ROM without a custom recovery...
To obtain root access, you can use Gingerbreak.apk
I suggest you just flash a custom recovery (I personally recommend 4EXT Recovery) via fastboot or you can simply use 4EXT Recovery updater app (free) or 4EXT Recovery Control app (paid, check my signature for link), then take a nandroid backup of your current ROM, and then Flash a Custom ROM.
You don't have to stick to Orange ROMs... you can flash whatever ROM you want... I highly recommend Endymion, but the choice is ultimately yours to make...
Glad you got this far... happy times ahead for you!!

Yup, everything seems to be fine. Go ahead and root your phone... flash 4EXT Recoery via 4EXT Recovery Updater app, and then after taking a backup, and doing a full wipe, flash whatever ROM you want to...
Read the instructions and guides carefully in the general and Development section prior to this, and remember...DO NOT REMOVE THE BATTERY WHILE THE PHONE IS STILL ON! It's better to try other methods to reboot it, or even let it discharge over time and switch off by itself, rather that attempt to pull battery. Othert than this, i think you're ok to flash a new ROM, and enter the amazing world of custom ROMs...

Congrats!
If you want a Sense 3 ROM, go for Hyperion
For Sense 3.5 (My personal favourite) go for Endymion
For crazy theming options, you can try MIUI from MIUI.us
If you like plain stock look.... Cyanogenmod.
I would however still recommend Endymion (Though i like v2.2 better than v3)
P.S. Just a friendly question... Gaffar me kitne ka pada ye phone? I bought my phone new...but my wife wants one now and i don't want to put in the money for a new phone from a mobile store...
i'll get endymion then, should follow your advise since you've helped so much. Do i need to make any changes to the hboot/radio?
and should i get both 3.1 and the add on package?
yaar, it'll be a lot cheaper now. when i bought it tab market price was around 22.5. I got it for 16.5 with box and accessories. At that time, there were only two shops that had the desire S and this was the only one that functioned properly.
i'm pretty sure you can get it for less than 13k now.
I'll try n get you the shop's name and number. i've bought both the desire and the desire s from him and they've worked well.

You can get the v3.1 without the addon initially. See how it works for you... Then you can flash the addon package if you feel like Modding the ROM. I'm still on v2.2 because I didn't feel the need to upgrade.
Please do get me the number of your guy in gaffar as I'm planning to get a galaxy note as well as a desire s...

Hey. Looked everywhere for the number but I just can't find it. Awfully sorry, man.
I don't know if you've ever been to Gaffar before but just incase you haven't,do ensure that you buy from a proper shop and not people with cabinets full of phones. These guys will offer you cheaper prices but will also disappear in a couple of days.
There are only 5-6 big shops which sell import phones, most of them are decent and will offer you a week or two worth of hardware guarantee. Enough for you to atleast test the phone out.

Hi guys,
First and foremost, may I just say a big thank-you for all the information I've acquired over the past few days. It's been a great help. Unfortuntaely, I'm now after more!
I have successfully rooted my HTC Sensation and have S-Off'd and installed the Recovery Mod on the phone. This went fine, without a hitch.
I then tried to install the new Insert Coin 5.1.6 rom onto the phone, the install went fine but on reboot, the phone is in a constant loop. When I go back into the bootloader and try to update using the PG58IMG.zip and it just says 'CID Mismatch'.
Fortunately I made a backup of the image but when I go to resotre it I get the same issue. The original splash screen is back, but the infinite loop still exists.
I have a feeling I didn't flash the firmware to the correct version. The only thing is now, there's no way I can see of getting to the device apart from using a multi-card reader to access the SD card.
I'm also unsure of what firmware to use with this Rom? I've heard about editing the andriod-info.txt file to include my phone model or CID but isn't there one with my model already included?
Thanks for any help you can offer guys, I really appreciate it. I was really looking forward to trying these roms but I kinda messed it all up
Cheers
David
Can anyone please steer me in the right direction
Hope this helps

Hi,
I just bought a HTC One S ville - great phone, but wanted to try MIUI.
I got S-OFF, had rooted it using the standard guide and had
clockwork-touch-5.8.3.1 for recovery.
I flashed MIUI but during load, it would hang - the same with Cyanogenmod 10, even though
I followed guides.
I had a nandroid and could revert, but HBOOT i tried "clear storage", and then must trouble started.
Now I couldn't mount SD card in recovery, and I couldn't boot into MIUI.
I followed this thread to gain access to the SD Card:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1630459
But that didn't work since I can't reflash clockwork-touch-5.8.3.1 since I get remote: signature verify fail - maybe because
it's RELOCKED (?) - otherwise I might have been able to mount, butno luck.
As a last resort, I tried RUU, but gets connection error 170 on two PCs running Windows 7 - tried 5-6 times.
So, after 4 hours I'm fairly sad, I have no idea as what to do a part from retrying RUU. I had a Legend once, and it took me 20-30
tries to get RUU working on Windows 7.
Any help would be greatly appreciated since I'm about to give up for now ;(
I quick follow up - I resolved the problem by installing HTC Sync which I didn't have installed...
Hope this can help others.
Regards,
Fred
What hboot and carrier are you on, if not unlocked. Probably running the wrong ruu, or missing the drivers.
