I got sick of Trigger force closing and rebooting my phone and freezing, so I finally decided to flash a new ROM...again. This isn't my first time doing this, so i don;t know what the problem is. I tried flashing the TW Bionix Frost 2.2.1, and it gave me:
E:can't open /cache/update.zip
Installation aborted.
Not knowing what that meant, I Odin'd back to factory.
Then i tried flashing the same ROM and now it gives me:
'opening update package...
E:Can't open /sdcard/(insert rom name).zip
(bad)
Installation aborted.'
SO, i tried another ROM, and same results... WHAT IS GOIN ON?? It's officially been 3.5 hours since i started with this thing. I give up trying to figure it out on my own.
PLEASE HELP!!
I can not help you, but I can help you put it to the top.

Ok so here is the deal, I have read all of the different instructions, I fancy myself as someone who knows how to follow directions, and I am still receiving an error while trying to do the manual update.
The first error I receive is this one: E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command I get this error when I go to the system recovery screen, but it still allows me to choose "apply sdcard:update.zip [Alt+S]"
The second error I receive is:

E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip

This error is received when I click "apply sdcard:update.zip [Alt+S]
I hope someone can help me with this. Also before you ask, my phone is the MyTouch 3G 3.mm (non-fender), and to my knowledge it is stock. I have no interest in rooting my phone, so that is why I know I didn't root it. However, it is a recent referb that I received from T-mobile after my first one took to the grave. I appreciate anyone willing to be patient with me.
**UPDATE**
My OTA came through last night but it is also failing when it gets about half way through the installation. Anyone have an idea what could be causing this and how I can fix it?
I've encountered this recently and have no idea what causes it!
Long story short... i was trying to get off the Vodafone ROM from my phone and hopefully update too in the process. I flashed a couple of stock ROM images but each time the OTA would fail during installation as would a manual install. At first it would fail signature checking, so i would disable the check using Clockworkmod, run the update again and then i would get the error you posted.
I'm wondering now if the official 2.2.2 update will ever work, even when Vodafone release it, and whether the 2.3 update will also fail when that is released.
You and i may have to bite the bullet and go down the fully custom route. Once Gingerbread is released i'm hoping that one of the chefs releases a nice Stock version that i can use
Actually...
I was soooo frustrated with the way I was treated by a T-mobile rep, when I called about the error today, that I decided to cancel my service with them. I have had several issues with their products and services and continued to give them chances. However, after today's incident I decided to terminate service... just as soon as my new phone from my new provider arrives on Friday.
In addition, since I am no longer going to be using the phone, I decided to try my hand at rooting.... and what do you know, I did it without a problem. LOL Oh well.
Congrats on getting a new phone. It never hurts to have an old one spare to use for experimenting with new ROMs etc.
so i needed to unroot my nexus because of warranty reasons, and i updated successfully to 2.3.2 but when i try to apply the 2.3.3 update my phone will not open it and install it. has this happened to someone else before? on the recovery it says
E: Error in /tmp/sideload/package.zip
(status 7)
installation aborted
I don't know if the radio in the phone is messed up or if i just forgot about something. i tried doing system check in's but those aren't working. i'm really pissed about this, and frustrated. Please help if you know a solution or heard of this happening before.

@iGoogleNexus i just updated ice cream sandwich. Not via the guy called beezys btw
however i want to downgrade! As i searched trough internet i couldnt find any answers besides your advice (which did not work for me). If you could help me i will be really appreciated. Please help me and my hopeless situation
Unroot your phone, then you'll be able to flash anything you want, even 2.3.3 no matter what rom you're currently using.
Good luck!
Great! Thank you so much however I don't know how to flash it :/ (n00b)! It would be perfect I'd you could explain it to me too! Thank much you sooooo much again!!!
I'm going to follow this thread closely.
Noob here too.
I have the bone stock NS, I9020T (not rooted) and got the OTA update of ICS 4.0.3. Like the OS but there are too many apps that are either buggy or simply don't work on ICS.
I downloaded the "Android 2.3.6/GRK39F/XXKF1 Radio/KA3 Bootloader" rom from here on XDA, renamed it to "update.zip" and copied it to the phone. When into the bootloader, selected Recovery and then selected "apply update from /sdcard" and selected "update.zip"
When trying to install the "old" rom, I get this error:
--Install /sdcard ...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
Installing update...
assert failed: !less_than_int(1316544229. getprop("ro.build.date.utc"))
E:Error in /tmp/sideload/package.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.
I have looked all over the XDA site, Android Central and searched Google in general and can't find some simple step-by-step instructions to go back to Gingerbread.
I am SO looking forward to someone to tell me (us) what we're doing wrong and what I (we) need to do to get back to Gingerbread.
Thanks in advance from a Moderator from another (motorcycle) message board.
UPDATE: Installed fastboot and my bootloader is unlocked. Tried again to go back to GB using the steps above and I still get the same error.
good topic ... bump to top for expert advice
As a matter of fact it is not that easy my friend i also tried that method however it did not worked for me too, it gave me the same error. So as rafael said we gotta unroot our phones and we can flash it from there (but how? ) it would ve awesome if someone could help
Thanks
BRICKED!!!
OK i think i bricked my phone after unrooting it i finally got back to gingerbread but a gingerbread that is only capable of mounting and unmounting the storage after unrooting suprisingly clockworkmod recovery was gone! most of the tasks end unexpectedly such as acore, setupwizard and calendar. in android system recovery i have only 4 options: reboot the system, apply update from /sdcard and wipe various data. Besides my mac doesnt see the nexus s via ADB. I am wrecked what should i do?? Any pro tips??
First off, I want to reassure you that your phone is not "bricked". If it was bricked, it would be completely unusable, wouldn't turn on, show anything on the screen etc.
It sounds like you didn't wipe your data before installing the new ROM. This can lead to force closes and issues like what you are experiencing - I have done the same before.
It will be possible to recover your phone. You say in the Android recovery you have access to "Apply Update from SD Card" - simply use this option to flash another ROM, but this time make sure that you wipe the data beforehand. Bare in mind this will remove all personal data from your phone such as apps, contacts etc. However, this should be synced with your Google account and will re-download to your new ROM.
It would be good for another forum member to confirm this before you do anything - I don't have a Nexus S yet (getting it tomorrow ) but I am a developer for other Android handsets.
OK problem solved. After i unrooted somehow magically gingerbread 2.3.6 installed itself (or i did somehow i dont know) after the gingerbread installation i installed the clockwork mod recovery. I found the correct software (Ice Cream Sandwich for Nexus S) and installed it and the system is running silk smooth for now
Thank you everybody who helped me working this out really appriciate it
Here is what I did...

I have the same problem, how to downgrade from ICS to GINGERBREAD using only non rooted system and OTA update?
I have ICS 4.0.3 if I would like to downgrade Nexus S to 2.3.6 how to i can without root ?
The message is the same
...
assert failed: !less_than_int(1316544229. getprop("ro.build.date.utc"))
E:Error in /tmp/sideload/package.zip
...
I think that is impossible (without rooting the phone) because probably this assertion
1316544229 < getprop("ro.build.date.utc")
is every time false with condition !(date build of gingerbrade < date build of ICS)
Hello! I've been reading on these forums for almost over a month now about installing ROM's and would like to do so. I run into all kind of problems however.
I've read all kind of guides, watched youtube videos, and whatever else I could to try to get it to work. However, when I do install it, I always get the "the whole-file signature could not be verified" error. I've tried installing the iPhone 360 ROM, as that's the one I really want. Unsuccessful however.
I've installed ROM Manager, ROM Toolbox (both premium), SGS Kernel Flasher, Tegrak Kernel, and of course Titanium Backup. Still getting errors trying to install new ROM. I'd appreciate any help! Thanks!
(Also, the main reason I want to install a ROM is because every time my phone cuts on, I get a notice that says "com.android.phone has crashed, force close". I'm unable to fix it. Still get texts and phone calls, but can't use data.)
crazy question, but you ARE trying to install a ROM made for the Infuse right?
well part of your problem is iphone 360 rom is for the vibrant and it also sounds like you have stock recovery go here and read
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1514886
and here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1293751
Well there's probably my first problem. I thought ROM's were made for droids, not specific phone models. Is there a specific ROM like the iPhone made for the infuse?
the one most like iphone is miui it is in dev section the iphone 360 is miui with a theme there are drawbacks with miui for the infuse it is a port so bluetooth audio does not work and hdmi does not work also droid is a phone made by motorola what you mean is android phones which is the operating system
So installing MIUI 1.12.23 on my Infuse should eliminate the signature problem?
no first you have to get a mod 3e recovery the easyist way to get that is to use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1092021
i would highly suggest you read the links i posted above before trying to install any custom roms you can soft brick your phone if you dont understand what you are doing
---------- Post added at 05:54 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:50 PM ----------
and this is the most current version of miui for the infuse
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506338
ok so I just wanted to fix my signal error
(Also, the main reason I want to install a ROM is because every time my phone cuts on, I get a notice that says "com.android.phone has crashed, force close". I'm unable to fix it. Still get texts and phone calls, but can't use data.)
what'd be the best way to do that one?
if your phone is under warenty still take it back to att but it is not hard to flash a rom just read those links they will walk you through it or you can try a factory reset
A thank you for your kindness, Jerry.
no problem i was once a noob on the infuse now i am a noob on the htc vivid qc i forgot about your thread you might want to direct him to it
Only I rooted my phone so now the warranty is voided. I've done the factory reset a gazillion times now probably with the wiping user data/cache and what not. I'll try flashing a ROM I suppose. Hopefully I can get it down. None of my screens ever seem to match the one seen in videos though.
Ok, I want to install this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1356011&highlight=ics+4+0
I understand what this is all talking about. Only, where's the file?
nvm, just have to install a new rom I suppose.
OK I have no idea what to do now. I installed this rom EXACTLY as it says to do!

Just a quick heads up to everyone, I was able to fix my issue by SWITCHING TO A NEW SDCARD, I had been using a 64GB SDCARD and I switched to a 2GB SDCARD and I guess that my recovery or my phone couldn't handle such a large card.
It took me about two days to come to this conclusion but after lots of ODIN and reflashing just about everything possible I've decided this was the issue. Also I ran up my flash count a hell of a lot. I hope this helps someone out who may have issues like mine!
Hey all,
Today I decided I would try out a new ROM on my SGS3 so I decided to install the MIUIv5 ROM here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2232800
Normally ROM installations go quite smooth for me so I opened up TWRP v2.5.0.0 and I did as I usually do by making a backup and wiping my system and then going to install my ROM. Instead today I got tons of errors saying:
Code:
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
E: Can't open /external_sd/MIUI5_d2vzw_3.4.12.420-signed (1).zip
(bad)
Installation aborted
So, I downloaded the ROM again, but this time from the mirror just in case I had a bad .zip or it didn't transfer to my SDCARD correctly, but then I started getting more and more errors.
Instead of getting a bad zip error I got the following:
Code:
E:Mount: Unable to find partition for path '/'
I guess this means it can't find my root partition?
Now all of a sudden I can't find my backups and I am just stuck without a ROM and I only have a recovery... quite inconvenient, also I can't flash any ROMS as I tried flashing some others but they didn't work at all no matter what I did and I am just running in circles... any help is GREAT APPRECIATED as I would love to have a functional phone by tomorrow.
I am fairly fluent with android and linux systems as well as computers in general so I should be able to provide any helpers with almost all information needed relative to my device, but sadly this whole issue has really stumped me.
Thanks so much!

Have you tried flashing with Odin?
I know a lot of people swear by twrp but for me I always seemed to have issues. I had a similar issue you are having when I finally flashed cwm again. I was able to fix my issue by odin.

Thanks for both of your replies, I decided just to revert back to stock and I am in the process of re-obtaining root and such and then I am going to try to flash again just using recovery... by flashing by odin do you mean flashing a ROM or flashing back to stock?
