Cant install CWM - Captivate General

So everytime i go to install clockwork mod recovery it says it did successfully. However it just reboots in the samsung recovery instead. I originally was on 2.3 gingerbread custom SYMPLY mod. Then i used odin 1 click to go to 2.1. And then Samsung kies for 2.2.
I am currently on rooted Stock 2.2 Froyo

Try running busybox and make sure that you are indeed still rooted.

You mean 3e recovery? Do some searching

Read the second sticky in general forum (3e recovery signature verification error). Should have the solution to your issue.

Give your phone to the first 14 yr old you see, they'll enjoy it more

Rooting and applying cyanogenmod

Have you tried the Samsung Galaxy S one click root application? It is quite simple, just make sure you are in Usb debug mode and the phone is plugged into a usb port directly on your motherboard.
Reply with questions if you have any.

Cyanogen 6.1 is not complete and support was dropped. However cyanogen mod 7 is being started and will be ported to the galaxy s first.
To help your situation with root. You need to either odin flash a rooted rom since you are already on froyo which doesn't run self signed update.zip files meaning clockwork mod wont work. But I can't think of any current froto rom that's odin flashable.
Or you will need to find the froyo update.zip to root it and odin flash 2.1 kernel which will boot into 2e recovery because it can't boot a froyo rom. root it with the update.zip then odin flash a 2.2 kernel.
Or the easy way of odin flashing a 2.2 kernel with clockwork mod or 2e recovery or an unlocked version of 3e recovery baked in. Then root.
Or one click odin back to stock. Root by any meathod you like and then flash cyanogen mod.

I897UCKB1 - rooting & lagfixing

I used to run custom ROM serendipity 5.11. Decided to give the official stock froyo a try. So, I flashed it to JF6 and installed I897UCKB1 on my captivate. Now, I miss the root privileges and also the stock ROM is still not smooth. There is a big improvement from 2.1 but not there if I compare with serendipity. So, is there any way I can root and install lagfix on my stock I897UCKB1 2.2 captivate? Please help

There are many many threads going on here that covers this. Either get a custom ROM from Cog4 or Torch 1.5. If not then use SuperOneClickv1.6.5-ShortFuse and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=870760 for lagfix

The assistance was in the post right above your own.
The reason the old update.zip method does not work is because Froyo uses 3e recovery, which requires the update.zip files to be signed. The SuperOneClick root bypasses that and directly gives you root. After this you can install CWM, and flash the supercurio voodoo kernel, which gets you the lagfix, and rids you of 3e recovery, all at the same time.

You can install the voodoo kernel via odin, but that can't be done straight from the phone. It is also packaged as a CWM flashable update.zip, so you could do it that way, but you still need a computer to root it first. Without root, you can't get into a non 3e recovery, and without that, you can't flash the package straight from the phone.

Prior to the current stock 2.2, i used serendipity custom rom on my phone. i used AIO toolbox for captivate to flash serendipity custom rom. can i use the same tool to root my 2.2 phone? i am very new to this whole stuff. i see that this particular voodoo kernel provided significant performance improvement on the stock I897UCKB1 captivate. If you can provide step by step guidance that would be great. thanks
I'm rooted and have the 3e problem....i go into recovery with CWM but update fails...tried the 3e patch that accepts unsigned but sbin recovery is read only won't let me delete/overwrite....tried an emu to chmod but says permission denied lol....i must be missing something.... I'm familiar with os but can't seem to figure this. Only thing stopping me from voodoo lagfix is damn recovery file not being deleted

[q] how to root gb update or how to downgread?

No, you cannot flash another ROM without being rooted. If you ran LG's updater than CWM has been replaced with the stock recovery.
Root again using NVFlash: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...hlight=nvflash
Once you're rooted, the rooted version of 2.3.3 that can be flashed in CWM can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1179748

[Q] Stupid question maybe?

My brother just bought a used galaxy s 4g from craigslist and it appears to be rooted because of the super user app. He wants to flash a rom to get rid of CIQ but when he tries to reboot into recovery it doesnt appear to boot into clockwork mod.
Two questions
1. Can we just delete the CIQ file using root explorer and be done with it?
2. He is still running 2.2.1 froyo. vuvkd1 and if the phone is rooted can i just completely reroot via odin all over from start to finish or must I unroot his phone back to stock first.
I suggest you use odin to flash ravers kj6 rom from dev section. Then with odin too flash kj1 kernel from dr honk then search for ravers kj6 no ciq edition and flash that via cwm.

It may not have had ClockWorkMod (CWM) installed on it. I assume it's probably booting into standard, 3E recovery. I *think* you can just delete the CIQ executable in /system/xbin but I don't know what ramifications that might have.
There are a few "No CIQ" ROMs in the Development section but I *think* they're all Gingerbread based.
There's really no sense in re-rooting if it's already rooted. If you do ODIN a new ROM onto it that does not have root, you can use SuperOneClick to root it or use a kernel that has root access.

Flash the SMS KJ6 file from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1358498
That'll get you on Gingerbread, then you can install Valhalla Black Edition
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_4G_ROMs#Valhalla_Black_Edition
Valhalla Black doesn't contain CIQ files.
Thanks everyone ill pass this on to him.
Removing the CIQ is a very detailed process... You need to be familiar with baksmali/smali and decompile/recompile apk's... Otherwise you will never truly remove it...

[Q] Trying To Back Up Current ROM Using ROM Manager

Just installed ROM Manager (5.5.23) and flashed CWM Recovery (3.2.0.0)
Before I try and flash a new ROM, tried to use ROM Manager to backup current ROM.
Getting error message:
Failed to verify whole-file signature
Signature Verification Failed
Installation Aborted
Samsung Galaxy S 4G (sgh-t959v)
Froyo 2.2.1
Kernel 2.6.32.9
Rooted using Super 1 Click
Frankly, I think I'm way out of my league...the more I read, the more confused I get.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
I also have Titanium Backup installed if that means anything.

Then

Thanks, TwitchyEye...
I've read the articles...I'm still learning.
Before I experiment with installing any custom ROM's or
upgrading to GB, I wanted to make sure I had my existing
ROM backed up.
Apparently, I am unable to boot into CWM recovery.
If this helps, the recovery installed on the SD card is:
clockworkmod/download/download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-3.2.0.0-galaxys4g.zip
I copied this file to my computer & unzipped it. It unzipped into 28 files, none of which was an
image file.
As I said before, maybe I'm way out of my league.
Thanks for the reply.
All you need to do is flash a rooted kernel with cwm already in it. Read the second post in lumin's guide. I think you are confused about how recovery works on this phone. It's in the kernel.
OK...as I understand it, I have to download a program called Odin and a
kernel and flash the kernel using Odin.
I do know how to get the phone into download mode.
I'm still a little nervous about doing this (although I was able to
root the phone without any problems).
Thanks again...
You have got to be adventurous when it comes to flashing. Luckily this phone is very hard to brick. Even if you get a boot loop with no cwm you can still one-click to stock and try again.

As I understand it, I need CWM recovery in order to back up my stock ROM...and ROM manager
is giving me all these error messages.
So...in order to get CWM recovery, I need to flash a custom kernel that includes it.
According to what I've read, I can either use Odin or SGS Kernel Flasher.
1. Which should I use
2. Which kernel should I select
Thanks...

You gotta walk before you can run. One-Click yourself back to GB Stock and worry about it from there. That way, if you get screwed up, folks have a baseline to assist you from, and can "unwind" whatever it is you have managed to do to yourself.
