[Q] Help with problem with a 3G Captive Portal - General Questions and Answers

Hi guys, hope i dont get someone angry with my problem.
Anyways, i got a Galaxy Tab P1000n as a present for my birthday some days ago, and in my country there's an operator (movistar) that offers 3g usb modems using gsm (sim cards), i already have one so i said given that the p1000n is unlocked i would pop the sim into the galaxy tab configure the APN and thats it.
But if only life were that easy, it seems my operator Movistar (also known as Telefonica) uses a captive portal, meaning that everytime it "connects" it opens a page where their 3g portal loads and one in which u got to press "navegar" to start browsing, also, if u dare to close the page it autodisconnect u (the page uses javascript, and connects to a server running tomcat it seems).
So when i put the sim into my galaxy tab, in order to connect to the 3g network i use the internet browser to allow myself in, but after some minutes the connection dies.
One because the browser (being it the native, dolphin HD or FF4) goes into sleep mode or something, forced by the OS, or because the script of the page is expecting Internet Explorer (if u check the code it's like looking for ALT-F4 to detect that the page was closed and so on).
So i dont know what to do, a friend told me to look for a way to keep the app (FF4 or Dolphin HD etc) Running always in the background, but doing so would be like having a service, and also disable the app for normal use, not counting that i'd have a mamoth of an app running just to use a page.
Another friend told me that maybe using linux commands and a script + cron would do the trick of autologin me to the network and keeping me on it.
And i sincerely dont know what approach to take, i've been looking online for something similar or someone with the same problem but i havent been able to find anything clear.
And i appeal to you guys cos u are extremely wise and i respect ur suggestions.
Hope u guys could help me, cos i have no choice about this, all the 3g services that the operator offers go thru this portal (at least those that are available to me i'm sure there are some fat cats or old cows who got old services without this).

HTC Touch Cruise config problems

Hi, I just bought a HTC Touch Cruise on ebay and I'm using on AT&T US (Minnesota). There's so many things I CAN'T do with the phone right now...
I have an unlimited data plan with AT&T, but for some reason I can't connect to gmail to download my messages. I also can't download weather forecast for my city or any other city. The weird thing is that I can access the internet with internet explorer and the Opera browser with no problems (Except the opera does not open google sites).
On top of all, everything I described above works perfectly with my WI-FI home network. I assume it's a problem with my AT&T configuration.
Can anyone please help?
Thanks in advance
It would help if you tell us what the config settings you have in your Cruise are right now. Did you use the connection setup wizard?
I did use de wizard for the AT&T connection. I also used the wizard for my e-mail account. I tried diferent settings with my mail too. Nothing that uses my data plan works besides the internet, but everything works fine with wi-fi. I'm really sad that I have this amazing phone and most of the features does not work. Please anyone help!!
i am from australia and I do not know alot about US carriers but, maybe they use proxies? maybe they block some sites. I think either your setting in the phone are wrong or the block sites. maybe give them a call and get there settings the could even be on there website.
Oh my God, I feel so stupid...
I fixed the date and time and everything works now.
What an idiot mistake to make. Anyway, thanks for the replies.
Now I can enjoy my phone!

Need help with browser

This is my first android device and so far I like it a lot (was previously on windows mobile)
I help run a sim racing site and I'm having a problem with a url to a scoring program we use. It always says "Data connectivity problem. The server failed to comminicate." on the captivate.
and it has the upside down android in the spots the data should show in.
I have tried multiple browsers with no luck. It works fine on my old moto q and it works on my friends iphone both with at&t. I should also mention that it works on my captivate if I am on wifi.
Here is a link to our site h t t p://nr2003.com and here is a link to the content I'm trying to view h t t p://gs58.mtco.com:27035/ARCAHotlaps
Any help is greatly appreciated.
I was able to use Wifi, but not 3g. I believe AT&T might have an issue with directing to a certain point on your server (27035).
This is a connectivity issue with AT&T. I'll try Dolphin browser next.
EDIT: Dolphin did not work but Opera did work. Opera uses their servers to transfer data. I believe it helps speed up data transmission over 3g networks.
Thanks madjsp but would they have an issue with this phone only?
I don't understand why it comes through on the q and the iphone and they are both with at&t also.
I can get there on the captivate's default browser by using a get.php file.

Could that port be blocked on the phone maybe or is that possible? As you can probably tell, I don't have a clue about this stuff lol
Sorry for the spaces in the links but I can't post a link.
I've been browsing this forum for a couple years and just now had the need for a post
XDA is awesome!!
Some browsers do block non-standard ports, but I would expect it over 3G and WiFi. Do you have another Android phone you can try it with?
I can only come to the conclusion that the iphone data plan offers different browsing experiences. Try calling att and ask them about it. They might be able to tell you why.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I called at&t this morning and they said it wasn't an issue with them but who knows.
They told me to call samsung in the morning. I dread that call.
I am unable to find anyone here at work with at&t and android but I did test a droid through sprint and it worked perfectly with a 1.5 version of android.
I also tried it on a verizon ally on a 2.1 version of android but his is an ere27 build I think and mine is an eclair build.
If someone out there with a different build of android through at&t could try it, it would help tremendously.
Either way, I'm calling samsung when I get home from work in the morning and while I'm at it, I might as well mention the gps issues.
If I could get these two issues resolved, this phone would be perfect for me.
This has gotten even more weird.
With wifi the web pages open ok but with the 3G network they dont.
This all with the captivate browser, with the opera everithing is ok (but I like the original browser more)
Here are some pics One with WIFI(page ok) the other with 3G (page not ok)
I have Auto fit checked
text zize medium
no landscame only( thw problem does not fix)
I have reseted my phone and my browser and the problems does not fix.
Please help.

[Q] Sites Accessible via Wifi, Not Cellular (Intermittent)

Hi All, I have a question I'm hoping someone might be able to help me with.
I have a Nexus S i9020A running CM 7.0.2 on AT&T. I've noticed something strange lately and can't quite pinpoint the problem.
I'm running a server at my house with a no-ip address to access my tv show downloads. I'm able to access this from the browser (any browser) while connected to wireless (in my network, or out) but only intermittently while on cellular data. When it isn't working it simply keeps trying to connect until it times out. I haven't yet recognized a pattern of when it works vs when it doesn't.
I thought for a bit it might be a DNS issue, but even with the straight IP address it won't load. Funny thing is, I'm still able to SSH into my router using ConnectBot, so I know the address is correct and the phone can see it. Other apps like RDP won't work either while I'm having this issue.
It's not the end of the world, but it sure is annoying. I'd like for it to work whenever I need it. Any ideas?! I'm stumped.
Thanks everybody!
Tim
I know nothing about networking, just so you know. It sounds like you know much more. I will offer a guess. With some other phones than the ns, sprint has multimedia proxies set for when you are on their network. Streaming music works on wifi but not cell. Use the msl to get into settings, ##data# is the code for sprint phones, and I forget what they are called but there's two proxy addresses and ports that need to be zeroed out then reboot in order to get streaming to work. This is probably not a solution for you but I thought I'd offer something since nobody else has chimed in yet for suggestions.
RS something or another. The other setting is always right next to the first one and generally at the bottom of the list of settings. It could be in advanced or multimedia. Different places for different phones. It would be wise to write down the default addresses and ports before changing them in case it doesn't work or breaks something. It usually doesn't though.
Hey herb, thanks for the response. I see what you're saying, but I don't think it applies here. I know I made it sound like I was streaming or downloading music through the phone...my mistake. What I actually meant was that I'm accessing a web site running from my house to control my home machine downloading music. It's nothing complicated, I'm just sure I'm explaining it terribly.
But, essentially it's just a regular old web page. It's just very strange that it would work wireless and not over cellular. They do run on funky ports, so that they're blocking or redirecting some stuff is very possible. Annoying...

[Q] Android updating

I bought a Telstra Smart touch phone, powered by Android. I bought the phone because I wanted to use wi/fi and connect via my modem/router and use the phone when I have turned off my computers and leave the modem on so as to access the wireless. I didn't want to use the phone for the internet outside of the house via the 3G network because I can't afford that. I was told by my ISP that I could use the gigs I pay for by connecting to my router but that was not the case, I was misinformed. I only wanted to do this in case I thought of something after turning off my computers and leave the router on to access wireless. This did happen & I was able to pick up the wireless signal but I only did it once, one web site and 2 emails were sent in 3 weeks because I was worried that I was getting charged. Then I got my bill, $90 for internet charges for the mobile phone. After many questions to Telstra finally spoke to someone who seemed to know that the charges were because Android updates the applications on the phone. I tried turning off the Internet part but then I couldn't even use the calender on the phone unless I put in my gmail account, is there any way I can use the phone without Android updating all the time and causing me to be charged. I put the phone back to factory settings hoping I could just use it for general things, text messages, phone, calendar, reminders etc.
thank you,
Joan.
Turn off background data and uncheck "Automatic update" in the market under your installed apps. Apps such as Gmail, Maps etc. Is set to update automaticly.
And go through the phone settings and uncheck things that includes "data" and "auto".
Oh, you also want to disable auto sync. (it's in settings)
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using XDA Premium App
thank you very much for helping me.
Joan
Sorry, I meant to ask ...if I do as you suggest will I be able to use the applications, such as the calendar, take photos etc., just like I can with my Samsung smart phone, but I don't have that enabled to the internet although it can be done but it's not wi/fi, thats why I bought this smart touch one and use it if I wanted to but only through my router wirelessly and it doesn't cost anything. I just want to be be able to send text messages including picture messages sometimes (I know the latter does cost). I could even use it as I first intended as a wi/fi phone at home, not through the 3G network though, through my router. I just don't want to have to pay for Android updates but would like to use the other features if they are available. I put the phone back to factory settings because I didn't think I could afford to use it but it's been bugging me so thought I would try again. I can't do anything with it though unless I enter my gmail account, so should I do that?.
Thank you very much for your time,
Joan.

Question Family link [TB-J617F]

Hi all,
I've been trying to get family link working as my daughter uses this tablet. When trying to add her account the setup gets stuck in an endless loop never competing. Having read various threads from other devices, I think it's probably something to do with play services not having certain permissions. I would consider unlocking, installing twrp, magisk etc if required to fix, but I don't want to loose widevine.
The long and short is I can't use her account on the device at all as she's part of the family group - her account won't work at all without family link.
I wondered if anyone here had either tried this, or come across other odd behaviours relating to play services?
I'm running the Chinese ROM ziu 13.
Appreciate any thoughts.
Cheers Matt
Few things I have tried (and eventually got it to work) across 2x Lenovo P11 Plus (J616F)'s:
1st one was a factory reset and then instead of using my home WiFi, setup the device using a 4G hotspot from my phone. (Not a clue why, but my Home Wifi (Unifi Access Points) takes upwards of 2 minutes to get internet with the Lenovo's, even though all other devices are fine).
Second method:
factory reset and setup the device as "Offline" (i.e. dont input any WiFi details, button down bottom right saying "Setup as Offline")
Once gone through initial steps, connect to your WiFi, give it 10 minutes to update a few bits.
Open Play Store (DO NOT SIGN IN!), and press the three dots at the top right and goto updates
Let the device update all apps
When complete, try adding the childs Google Account (again, if this fails, try using a 4G hotspot from another device (disabling Wifi on that device first))
Hope that helps
Ok, that sounds pretty strange but I might give it a go. I just set her up a new Google account as nothing I could do could get the old one logged in. Thanks for your advice.
I suspect your unifi is running a shared ssid and your 5ghz is on an inaccessible band, are you always connecting at 2.4ghz? I had to change the 5g band on mine to even see it!

Click to collapse
Only have my 5Ghz on normal bands (i.e. non DFS), even tried a separate 2.4Ghz Guest network, disabled WPA3, all to no avail. Not got a clue what caused it, my ISP doesn't block anything either (Zen UK)
Any other device was fine over WiFi (have setup much older Samsung tablets, newer kids phones) all with Family Link, it was just the Lenovo's that was stuck in a loop saying I needed to remove and re-add the account.
Just couldn't figure it out, and had already spent a few hours trying. Hoped the newest firmware would fix, but that didn't help either.
Hope it helps and good luck
Just playing around on the tablet and it appears that it struggles with IPv6 - could be that my hotspot is IPv4 only. Could be related to the loop it gets stuck in?
Not sure why it doesn't like IPv6 though as all other devices are fine with it...
I've just gone through full reset, then tried using 4g hotspot as you suggested. I have to use Lenovo app centre to get play store, then use play store with no login to update. That all works fine. Then add my daughters account. Then I get stuck in the same loop of not being able to register the device with family link.
In my case, I don't think this relates to internet access, I think there's something going wrong with the software / permissions on the device. It's genuinely very frustrating as I imagine it's probably not terribly difficult for the Lenovo Devs to fix.
