Have installed the drivers from the Motorola site and the phone is connected on the 'Portal and Tools' mode.
Android Version: 2.1
Any suggestions?
Cheers,
SuperOneClick works on my laptop but not my desktop for some reason (but I'm using the linux/mono version). I always have my phone connected "charge only" mode when I'm doing stuff like this, but I don't know if that matters.
Another approach to rooting XT720 that I've used a lot:
Install "Explorer" by Speed Software (free* in market https://market.android.com/details?id=com.speedsoftware.explorer)
Download UniversalAndroot 1.6.2 beta 5 to your sd card
Run Explorer to find and open/install the UniversalAndroot.apk from the sd card
Run Universal Androot and root your phone
*the very popular "Root Explorer" is also by Speed Software, but it's the paid version
I use Universal and it works well. Either method will work, you just need to get root. Universal does have one nice feature, the ability to Unroot. This is nice if you have to take your device in. Just unroot, delete the Superuser apk and uninstall Universal. They won't be any wiser for it. Then when you are done, you can reroot no problem. Woot!

Am trying to now move the apps to the sdcard. I heard apps2sd does not work with 2.1. I'm not able to find it in the market

To get apps to sd card, just use link2sd; even better than apps2sd i think. First of all works on 2.1. second of all, it can store all apps on sd card, unlike apps2sd which only moves apps 2 sd card if function is made available by developer. I am using it now on my xt720 and works like a charm!! I have around 70 to 80 mb free internal memory!! Just make sure you make a second partition on your sd card(using free software like minitool partition). Hope that helps!

There is a good guide over in the themes and apps forum on Link2Sd by Zachary57 if you want to go that route while on 2.1 Link2sd is probably the best option for beginners cause you have partition your card right before applying and really don't have to do any ADB since Link2sd is an apk you can get from the market. App2sd can get confusing and frustrating until you get the hang of it. App2sd on froyo and eclair are two completely different processes, fyi.
Psneuter doesn't always work well for me.. If I use the older 1.7 SuperOneClick which uses the old rage exploit it runs through just fine.

Why not use the andriodcentral wonder machine? This will load the apk for you....
thanks i will try that tonight and let you know how it goes
i downloaded the .apk and tried to install it.
I get to summary and click "install".
Next it says
"Replace application
The application you are installing will replace another application.
All previous user data will be saved"
Kinda weird because i'm using super rooter and though that stuff was removed...but figured i screwed something up on the tibu restore of my apps and maybe restored it somehow (even though its no where in my phone).
I click okay. I see the regular install screen you'd see from a .apk if you are installing it that tells you what it has access to. I click install. it acts like it instals for a split second then says:
"aplication not installed". all i can click is done.
any ideas?
If you use the Android Central sideloader you will see this error.

I am trying to install it again too and I have not got it to work yet.
If it already sees a version there, you may have to manually install it using adb install with the -r switch.

By the way thank you for your help. I have asked twice on the SRE thread and have got no help there. Seeing as who it is the SRE that removed the file and the files he has posted to install the removed apps is what I am using I find that a little troublesum
i also have had no luck putting this back on.....

copy xxxx.apk to your sdcard
adb shell
su
adb mv xxxx.apk /system/app
or use root explorer or similar to copy it to the system app folder
reboot and it will be installed

One Click Root & Recovery for the Epic 4G! v2.5.5 Now has ClockworkMod Redirector!
Here's a new one click root. 2.4.0 now flashes clockworkmod recovery for you. It's also a little less likely to fail, and is tested to work on Froyo.
It will also work correctly if you are on a pre-rooted kernel. It will install superuser, busybox, and clockworkmod.
http://firon.net/xda/one.click.root.exploitv2.5.5.zip
Here's 2.5.0 of the one click root, now with the clockwork redirector integrated.
I cleaned up noobnl's script a little bit and ensured that adbd would run as root when booted into recovery. Also made sure we symlinked every single applet that recovery's busybox provides.
Now the one click also avoids pushing playlogo unless it detects that you have the old joeykrim root installed, to avoid any potential issues with future froyo releases.
Linux and Mac users users chmod +x run.sh and run it
THANKS FIRON
Here's 2.2.7, that simplifies the root process thanks to the discoveries here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=800483
I also increased the timeout after running the root (fails less), moved more things to /system/xbin to reduce the risk of breaking things, and removes all the old files leftover from joeykrim's root (including his modified playlogo that runs at boot every time).
It also means your system will no longer be mounted as read-only every time you reboot and there's no more problems with jk-su overwriting your existing su binary.
1. you need samsung galaxy s drivers

64-bit drivers: http://firon.net/xda/usb_drivers_GalaxyS_x64.zip
2. push MENU, select Applications > Development, then enable USB debugging.
3. extract and run run.bat
4. enjoy!
v2.2.4 added busybox and the remount script and fixes sprint animation not showing
2.2.5 superuser.apk & su added!

My phone went completely black. Not responding to anything.
I can see the device with adb devices and ran run.bat and then run2.bat and it rebooted the phone but I don't think I have root. How can I test it? I downloaded wireless tether and it doesn't broadcast.

Download Titanium Backup.
Hi,
Have spent the last hour or so followign various guides and downloading programs to run on my PC, and nothing has worked.
I have been using Links 2SD on my rooted HTC Hero (stock 2.1) but was unaware I had an older version. As I have deleted apps linked to the SD, data has remained on the ext2 partition, because I did not remove the link first.
My ext2 partition is full (I've calculated about 70MB of unaccounted for usage), so would really like to be able to remove some files from it.
Have tried to get to it through terminal emulator, but the $SU resulted in 'permission denied', even though I am rooted and have super user permissions installed.
I am on a Windows7 PC.
Please help, this is getting really frustrating!

You will need:
A source of Better Terminal Emulator.apk (3.38 works) (From now on called BTE)
A working android dual-boot
How to:
Somehow get BTE onto your netbook
Install it using the provided file manager. (DON'T WORRY THAT PACKAGE INSTALLER CRASHES. THAT IS NORMAL. JUST CLICK FORCE CLOSE AND PICK BTE FROM THE LAUCHER.)
There's no need to install the plugin, just click OK and open and close BTE until it opens a green text on white background.
Exit BTE for now and download busybox
Re-open bte and type cd /sdcard/downloads then cat busybox > /system/xbin/busybox
Get Root Explorer from somewhere and install it with file manager
Open it. Test whether busybox works by clicking the mount r/w button. If it changes, your netbook is rooted!
Installing Apps that give "application not installed" in the package installer
Get the app you want and find it in root explorer
Long click the APK and click copy
Right click > more > home
Click mount r/w at the top (MUST BE ROOTED AND HAVE BUSYBOX INSTALLED, SEE ABOVE)
Go to /data/app and click paste
Find your apk and long click and click rename. Name it com.publisher.appname
Long click on the apk and click permissions
Tick the 1st two boxes on the first row, the 1st one in the second row and the 1st. one on the third row.
Go to your launcher (I use GO Launcher EX) and see if it's installed. The app may still force close. If it has not installed, wait a while and see if it appears or try copying it to /system/app and back again
Installing Market & GApps Progress
Installing Market & GApps so far progress:
Installing GApps from CyanogenMod 5 (Android 2.1) & Toshiba Tablet's Market
WORKING!!!!!!! Download! (How to is in the .zip). Note: You cannot search or browse categories, so I will include the Appbrain app for those purposes.
The market opens, but crashes on search or clicking apps. If you click on a recommended app and click install it doesn't download. Does anyone want a tutorial or know how to stop it crashing?

Help
Hi thanks for the guide I've come across a problem though. I've installed BTE and got to the stage
Re-open bte and type cd /sdcard/downloads then cat busybox > /system/xbin/busybo
But when I type in the second line it says that it cannot create the directory because it is read only.
Any thoughts on why it is doing this?
Thanks

Quinny899, thank you for writing this up. I just bought a Acer Aspire One D257 which dual boots into Android 2.3.1. I tried to follow your instructions but I ran into the same Read-only file system error as nunbean. I tried his solution but i don't seem to have adb, su permission, or applications>developer>usb debugging available to me.
Any suggestions? Have you had any luck hooking your D255 to another computer and running adb?
Thanks

Thank you so much for helping out with this process. I'm still trying to figure out what Acer/Insyde changed between our two computer models.

I'm working on an apps2sd method.
You can move to /x-root/app or /sdcard/app (make the folders and move the app apk into it first)
The main code is:
ln -s /data/app/com.whatever.app.apk /x-root/app/com.whatever.app.apk
-or-
ln -s /data/app/com.whatever.app.apk /sdcard/app/com.whatever.app.apk

Hello All,
Looking for help rooting an APEX 7 inch tablet.

[x] Device already have SU Root access, Rooting not needed.
Says it is rooted, I have root access through adb shell. gets toast notification that root has superuser access. just the device itself doesnt recognize root. I have tried unrooting and rooting again. and am now in the process of trying different versions of su binary and superuser.apk.
is there a way to fix this or can anyone recommend a already rooted rom that would be good for this tablet.
Having the same issue too, but I went a little deeper and found that the ttablet has a legacy such binary in its system. I tried updating it and the update fixer and neither work so I downloaded the such binary from androids.com and installed from recovery and still the same issue. I think there has to be a file that pairs it to the system so we can grant or deny access. I just bought 2of these so I'll try different root methods for 4.2.2 to see if I can get something k.
ok i found a full root... search for a phone root in the samsung galaxy s 3 mini thread. its for the sm-g730a root.( i have one of the phones and its a chinese root). when u root it by that way make sure you have super su already installed and click the chinese root first and allow supersu to gain root access then update the binary on supersu and voila you have a rooted apex 7in tablet. now time to debloat my system and hopefully someone will make a recovery and rom for this tablet

I have been looking for a root method for this tablet as well, nothing has been found that I trust except what is mentioned above. I have not tried it since the tablet is my sisters and don't want to break it if the method does not work.

I managed to root my tablet with motochopper. It works and gives SU access, but it still won't allow installs to the external SD. Been spending all week trying to figure out different ways to expand the memory to no avail. =T
So I managed to alter the vold.fstab file to switch the external sd with the internal sd. Haven't really done much other than check the settings/storage tab. I'll try to do more with the tab to see if anything wrong comes up. If it's good then I'll probably post it somewhere on here.

First time rooting tablet
So I want to gain Root access to my Tmax 9HD, my skill is modding and rooting Samsung variation cell phones. I'm new to the tablet scene and would like some solid "Working" roots methods.
I am using the TM9S775 , running on Android version 4.1.1 I'm not looking for an upgrade just Root access so I can start modding it myself as I have my own preferred setup.
Any help for rooting would be greatly appreciated, I did see the above method, but won't try it until it becomes verified to work effectively.
I'm in the same boat, would like to root it, as it seems that Google updates cause the gapps and hangouts to stop uncontrollably after a week or two... But I haven't done much rooting other than Samsung or HTC phones.. I'm sure if we put all our minds together we can figure it out!

BTW, used KingO root. Root was effortless. Have done a complete ADB Backup and rebooted to recovery using ADB reboot recovery with no problems. Would love to know if anyone has loaded a custom recovery and a custom ROM, especially a 4.4 based ROM. Was pretty impressed with the KingO root app. It loaded SuperSU and device showed root with rootchecker on first try. Very nice. The only thing I could not get to work in ADB was rebooting to bootloader.

Very cool... I actually emailed TMAX about the issues I was having, and according to them the tablet will only work witn 4.1... we shall see!
"The hardware was specifically made to operate on Android 4.1 not any future OS."

[*] Press enter to root your phone...
Press any key to continue . . .

[*] Waiting for device...
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *
I have the tablet set to USB Debugging is there something else I should do? Ive noticed the console says I need the USB drivers but I have yet to find any for this tablet.

Do you have the ADT bundle installed? Install that first, then try motochopper again.

They told me that the tablet isn't able to run any other OS than what they themselves put. Sounds like a bunch of crap, but I was reading that some tablets/phones aren't able to install ROMs that aren't digitally signed by the manufacturer. I tried a few custom ROMs for 4.1.1 that weren't meant for our tablet, just to see if i can even get mine un-bricked, but none of them were able to be installed.

Figured I'd put up this code here so maybe you guys can tinker with it. It's the vold.fstab edit I did. It swapped the SD cards so that external SD was reading as internal, but it wasn't sticking after reboot. I tried messing with build.prop to make it stick, but it bricked my tab =T
Original vold.fstab:
Code:
# Mounts the first usable partition of the specified device
#use this line to support VIRTUAL CDROM.And you can define the directory where you want to mount
loop_mount loop /mnt/VIRTUAL_CDROM
dev_mount sdcard /storage/sdcard0/external_sdcard auto /devices/platform/AMLOGIC_CARD/card_host/memorycard0 /devices/platform/aml_sd_mmc.0
#dev_mount sdcard /storage/sdcard0 3 /devices/platform/s3c-sdhci.0/mmc_host/mmc0/mmc0:0001/block/mmcblk0 nonremovable,encryptable
dev_mount flash /storage/sdcard0 auto /devices/virtual/mtd/mtd9/avnftl9 /devices/platform/mtd/mtd9/avnftlj /devices/platform/mtd/mtd9/media nonremovable
asec flash

root
i have a strong feeling they wont be updating...much much less releasing source. either way i rooted the tablet by pushing root in sideload. also, through a few 3rd party mounts. by luck i would assume, i wouldnt trust how solid of a root it is. none the less. i have been adding our tablets name to similar MID tablets on the markets source 4.2.2 factory roms to see if i can hit a home run.....theory says thats it stays signed and just adding the tablets model to the list of acceptable models in the rom. would allow it to work seeing how they are ALL on AM3,4,5,6 technology anyway and i have the drivers and program to change the "TM9s775" inside the tablet itself. i have yet to turn up anything just yet. i am thinking a AM3 jig from another tablet to force boot a new boot loader. i have done similar jigs to samsung and lg products. i dont get on here much. im more active in gsm-forum under another account name. if i have a break though ill do my best to just PM those who need to know.
