AOSP ROM Selection - HTC Inspire 4G

I am going to root a friend's Inspire tonight and I've seen the difference in performance in AOSP vs. Sense on my EVO, so I'm completely sold on AOSP being the superior overall experience (Thanks Team Douche!!!). I have a couple questions, if anybody can take a moment to answer them for me.
More Reliable (GPS, MMS, etc.) AOSP ROM: GingerBeast 2.1.2 vs. CM7 7.0.3 vs. newest CM7 Nightly?
Is there any kernel that is better as far as stability goes, CM vs. any others?
I run CM7 7.0.3.1 with TIAMAT & ViperMOD on my EVO and it runs splendidly. I just wondered how I could get the closest experience on the Inspire.
Thanks in advance to anybody who can help me out!

I'm running GingerBeast (as are a lot of others) and it's ROCK solid. Everything works very well, it's buttery smooth, stable, and gets great battery life. I'm using the kernel that comes with it, and I see no reason to change it.

So, sorry to ask for clarification, you're using GingerBeast and having no issues with sending/receiving MMS, GPS lock, etc?
What about this "tinny audio" issue I've read about?

The tinny fix is already incorporate into all the latest AOSP ROMs. This was more of an issue back in February/March when these ROMs were in their infancy on the Inspire. The Inspire has a different audio chip than the DesireHD, so when the DHD ROMs start coming over to the Inspire is when this problem was noticed and fixed.
Based on my experience, almost all ROMs have occasional issues with GPS lock. There is a universal GPS fix that works very well most of the time. Link is in my sig.
The latest CM7 nightlies have been good. The only major issue occurring in them right now is an Exchange email bug; if your friend doesn't use corporate email then it's no problem obviously.
Gingerbeast is good and stable. Naturally since it was designed to be a pure AOSP ROM, it is missing a bunch of features that are in CM7. Some people don't really use these features so it's not a big deal for some.
CM7.0.3 is a good choice as well. It's missing some of the latest bells and whistles of the new nightlies, but it's a good ROM. It doesn't have any major problems that I'm aware of.
Regarding kernels, unless your friend is into undervolting and overclocking, it's perfectly fine to just stick with the default kernel that comes with these ROMs. But if he wants to play around with such things, the LorDMod kernels (in the DesireHD section) are popular. If you go with CM7.0.3 you'll want to use the LorDMod HD kernel ; if you go with a current version of CM7 then you'll want to use a LorDMod UE kernel.
Another good AOSP ROM is Team Phoenix's TPGB20110611-CM. Despite what the OP of this ROM's thead says, it is based on CM7 nightly 95, comes with a LordMod UE kernel and has been customized by the dev.

No issues at all. And like the poster above me stated, the audio fix is incorporated.

Most ROMs for Inspire are based of Desire HD. Inspire has better speakers compared to Desire. So the audio software on Desire sometimes produces "tinny" effect when at higher levels. So there is a little fix that put in place to let the audio come out well on Inspire.
When u flash GingerBeast, make sure u flash 2.1.2 that has this fix in place. If u flash 2.1, make sure u flash 2.1.1 and 2.1.2 updates one after other.
Edit: Henry beat me to it.

Thanks very much guys! I definitely appreciate all the information! I'll pop back in and let you know how it goes!

Just a little update!
I used the Ace hack kit, which was a breeze to deal with. (Props to attn1 for making that available!)
I flashed the radio that was in the first post of GingerBeast, then flashed GingerBeast, then flashed the LorDmodUE kernel and the -50UV script, booted up, installed SetCPU and I'm SHOCKED!
Stable OC at 1.84GHz?!?!? 2960 Quadrant score! That beats my other friend's Atrix all day long.
I lowered the OC to 1.38GHz with the interactive governor and this phone FLIES. I have a little Inspire envy while using my EVO now...
Thanks again for all your information guys! This phone has been completely blown wide open! I can not wait for my friend to see how amazing her phone is running!
I can't vouch for battery life yet, but I have a feeling that it should be significantly better, considering how dramatic the change was going from Sense to AOSP on my EVO.

Wow that is a high quadrant, I had 2400 on mine with some overclock on gingerbeast. Cool though.

As of the time of my post, your OP was still saying nightly 77 and di11igaf kernel and all that old stuff that was in your last May release. I see you've got it updated now.

I'm pretty sure it was more of a "if you can live with it you can" type thing. I've been using it constantly since slayher released it and have had no problems. granted im not in a 4g area and dont use wifi, bluetooth, or gps (in college) but data has worked great, calls, sms, etc all work great!

**EDIT**
Nevermind, I suppose that falls under Das BAMF for the purpose of this poll.

Was running CM7, but I had some serious issues with a few rather important calls(doh), so I flashed back to Das Bamf. I'll definitely be all about some CM7 once nightlies start rolling.
I've been using it since it hot the forum. Its got little things buggy still, but much better than most all other ROMs as far as random reboots. I haven't had any freezes or reboots. All my calls have came through. Its a daily driver for me.

Now running with 100% more CM7 THUNDERKANG - "I love the smell of KANG in the morning" Edition.
Was on BAMF until this morning (Best of the Sense ROMs, no doubt), switched to CM7 pre-alpha, Thunderkang flavor.
Yeah if anyone knows if its possible to add options to a poll let me know...
For now I guess for thunderkang just vote for CM7.. its baaasically the same!
Once MIUI and CM7 have officially released theirs and possibly others come along I'll just make a new poll because I'm sure things will change drastically at that time.

Its mostly Perfect
Been using Perfect Storm and have had a great time with it so far. Rarely any issues, unless 4g is down or slow in the area. Which is, unfortunately, too often so far.
I have used every single rom listed above, and the one I have stuck with is The Perfect Storm. But I am sure that once Miui is out, that will be my rom of choice.i used Miui for the motorola droid and loved it.
I have tried several roms but i keep going back to The Perfect Storm. I have never had any major issues with it and things that do need tweaking are always being worked on. I want to try CM but it is in too early in development for my tastes. I will eventually try it but probably return to The Perfect Storm.

[Q] Fav Rom in your opinion

So i am currently running eagles blood and love it, super smooth, love the black. Havnt found any other glitches yet. Props to creator. What are some other good roms our there
Before the g2x I had a vibrant and ONLY ran Team Whiskey built ROM's because they were always the quickest and most reliable. When I first got my g2x I saw krylon running around the g2x forums and was very excited to see what he will do. My wife is STILL running Bionix on my old vibrant and I am also running Bionix on the g2x. Battery is a lot better, black theme is very nice, phone is super snappy, and I have NO problems with Bionix.
I have tried pretty much all the gb rom's out there and fauxs aosp 1.1.5 gb rom has been the most stable and smooth build I've used... with his custom kernel the thing is buttery smooth and fast with an oc of 1.5ghz if you want it super fast ... plus its a nice stock gb build with no extra stuff which I prefer ...
right now I'm running Bionix.
It's hard to say anything about one being better/worse than another right now, since they're all still in beta form. Let's get some final releases out, or at least an official gingerbread leak to compare against, before judging anything too harshly. And I'm not trying to say they should rush...just that we should expect some glitches
Here is my opinion.
None is better then the other for the fact that they are all built off the same source. If you look at the change logs for all roms right now it is mostly visual things changed with few backend things. (minus cm7 as they built their own)
Anyways give the devs more time to get more actual development done then compare them.
Stock Rom because it's more stable than any of the custom roms at this point. Every thread I've been reading people are having a lot of issues that's why I haven't flashed yet. Waiting for stable build from official source

Not quite true.
stock has almost all the issues and more then most the modded roms.
The reason you see more people complain about the issues on the modded roms is cause ALOT more people are using them over stock as it is junk.
EB1.04 Froyo. Used with included kernel and just a couple of tweaks here and there. Better than stock, LG camera, no GB issues. I get great battery life and speed with it. I'm not looking for a Quadrant record holder...just something that does what I want it to do when asked.
Now for the moderator in me:
These types of threads have the potential to invite flame wars. Keep this thread civil and helpful so it remains open. Thank your for your cooperation.
I've tried a lot of roms but settled with EB 1.0.4 because it feels like a stock rom but without the resets I kept having the with leaked version. The GB keyboard lags some but its nothing.
CM7 is really coming around but I'm going to hold off until they fix the APN settings. I've used CM since the first nightly and started looking elsewhere after #21. I'm looking to just relax with a working rom ATM.
As far as the various roms, they aren't all based on the same source. CM uses a CM base and their own kernel, EB uses the GB leak, and a few others are from AOSP directly from Google. Lots of variation. I agree that we should wait till we get some final builds until we compare but I think this thread is good for people to know because I've been using CM since it came out and when it came time to find something more stable I couldn't find which ones worked or which ones had which bugs.

I'm a Team Whiskey fan coming from the Vibrant so Bionix is my first choice, But Eagle's Blood 1.0.4 FR is also really good and in fact I'm running right now because it's still 2.2 so it has stock camera which is great!
Once Krylon gets the camera working on 2.3 I will go back to Bionix!
Haven't tried any others because of the APN issues!

No issues on Bionix.
I've played with all roms.
Latest was Bionix. It suffered some miserable battery drain with this rom. I gave it a few days play, with plenty of idle and game time. I'll say it is very snappy, however I couldn't accept going from 100-under 50 overnight idle while I slept.
Great rom and I will try again.
I'm gonna try EagleBlood 1.04 here in a few minutes, as it's gotten some decent mentions throughout the forums.
oh and btw, faux's aosp 1.1.5 got rid of any lag on the keyboard which i think no other rom has been able to fix on a gb rom

I wish they had a froyo version, cause I hate the jerky browser in gingerbread....
yea man i gotta say def eb 1.04 froyo is what is best rite now ive tried all of them and dont get me wrong bionix is the **** and faux did get rid of the keyboard lag and thats a big thing with these tgingerbread roms for some reason but yes all great roms but eb froyo 1.04 is sick got this extra keyboard by lg which i love and the stock cam also butter smooth but when running a oc kernel im having problems with my phone being on charger and it dying and not turning back on n having to do a battery pull so im just keeping it stock and love it still very fast!
The best ROM for me has been EB Froyo 1.04 and Morfic kernel is running great.
I have flashed nightlies, bionix, GB leak, and eb 1.02 and 1.04.
EB Froyo seems to be the most stable and just works for me.

I'm using the stock kernel. I tried the first morfic kernel for the build, and it was very unstable for me. Planning on giving the +48mb version a shot in the future, but stock works so well for me (speed+battery life), it'll be hard to justify a switch.

[Q] Most stable ROM?

Hi people, how are you. I still can't find a ROM to stick with. For those who have tested many roms, which one is the most complete package? Fewest bugs and most stable?
Right now I'm on EB 2.3.3 and it's really nice, but I got a few errors (lost connectivity, txt took forever to receive). It hasn't happened since, and I hope it stays this way.
So, what are you running, and why.
Your on a good one...they all have little things wrong with them...
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
Depends on what u looking for, wish i could combine all, cm tweaks+froyo cam+froyo a2dp.
been on cm7 nightlies, birgertime 2.3.5, whitehawks MIUI and 2.3.3 OTA build, EagleBlood all of them, faux's from AOSP to right before he started to work on a CM7 source build, xboarder's stock tweaked...
Right now I'm on Whitehawk's 2.3.3 rom and I like it enough to stay with it, but really want kernel options and LG cam. EB froyo was super stable and still have that has my reliable (won't be near a computer to flash and play with roms) Nandroid. So I'd say stick with EB for now to be honest. That and he updates with the most stable updates IMO... infact I might be flashing back to that tonight, after thinking about it lol.
Thanks guys. Anyone have experience with the latest MIUI? I loved it on my G2, but it seems really buggy for the G2X.

i just did the clockworkmod flash and done a full backup and was going to try a few roms without all the bloatware tmobile puts on.. but i HAVE to have a rom that is stable with wifi calling because i have 0 signal at home and wifi calling is very important to me.. in fact the stock wifi calling is kind of flaky on this g2x and would like a rom that might have this perfected a bit more.. any recomendations?

I have the same issue with no signal and needing wifi calling. without a doubt X-boarders stock tweaked is the best I have been on for stability and daily use. I havent been on the new weapon rom yet but I have been hearing good things about it. right now I am trying out faux new aosp with his OC kernel and for two days it has been solid. Only had one data drop so far. X-boarders is the way to go I think. I have been considering going back until Miui or CM7 is more solid.

Before you dive in, here comes my question.
If you have done your research, there are alot and I mean ALOT of roms to flash for the thunderbolt.
I would like some feedback as to what rom you have flashed.
This will help anyone new to the thunderbolt party as well as myself.
I have yet to make a decision on rooting or waiting.
Your feedback below please.
Thank you all in advance
And as ALWAYS,
Thank you to all the developers who are working there butts off !
I tried out team bamf first, but then they jumped ship to their own forum. So then droidtheory started releasing roms and jumped to him and haven't looked back.
He has a sense and aosp (cm7) version and also dhacker and xpack have released their own versions based off of droidtheory's work.
xpack's senseless rom is very nice. Has the sense base so gps and nfl network work right out of the gate, but no sense (adw launcher instead) so its fast and smooth.

You can't go wrong with DroidTh3orys ROMS.
Root. Now. That way you can make your choice when/if GB actually comes. You can always go back to stock unrooted. You may not be able to root with the new OTA.
Roms? Like many things they are a personal choice that no one can make for you. Having flashed them all, I can tell you they have improved dramatically since I got my bolt in May. If you choose to root, do yourself a favor and try several. You will find the Rom that suits your taste and needs.

100% agree with this guy.
Us leaving XDA doesn't change anything about the quality of our roms. Fact is, many of our innovations end up in other roms anyway (ask ihtfp69 and erishasnobattery).
You can find us at teambamf.net, or rootzwiki.com.

I've been running dasBamf Roms for a month now and love them. I am currently on UberBamf PR3. every Tbolt is different, so experiment and see what works best for YOU. After you install each ROM, make a back up of it. That way, if you install one, that you don't like, you can revert.
I like a fast, customizable ROM without all the Sense bloat so I use Liquid Thundersense. I've only had this phone for 5 days so I really have no other Thunderbolt ROM to compare it to (I ran Gingeritis for a couple hours and the stock ROM only long enough to download Gingeritis to the device; I just hate Sense lol). As far as it goes though I've owned five Android devices total and have rooted and ran custom ROMs on all of them. Only way to go IMHO.

Dumb question, do you keep the camera effects with different roms. I really like the focal effect. Lol

I can't say for sure, but I just checked mine, and it had all the camera effects in it.

They all offer something different. I have tried almost all. It's hit and miss. What works for me might not work for you. Keep flashing you will find your liking.

[Q] Which is the best G2x rom, and why have you selected it over others?

I'm not new to modding at all, and don't need any technical help. I have been using a stock G2x since it came out and I've decided it's time for an upgrade. I noticed that there are quite a few roms for the G2x (18 listed in the "All roms," thread), and several of them look very well done. I'd like to know which one you think is the best, and why. Very technical answers are fine with me. The things I look for most in a rom are reliability, speed, and battery life. Flashy graphics are nice, but not my key concern. Thanks in advance for your input!

right now there are ICS roms and GingerBread roms. I'd suggest that you pick a GB rom since you mentioned reliability in your concerns. I'd start out by trying with CM7, then EaglesBlood's, thn hellFire Phoenix's. Those are the best GB roms imo. And the only most stable (non of the ICS rom is stable yet) ICS rom is HellFire Sandwich
I use Weapon G2x 3.0 R1 with Faux SV Kernel and Mixer Theme. I use it because its based on stock and doesn't have any issues. The Faux Kernel always me to OC to 1.2 without any issues and Mixer Theme just makes it look that much more fantastic. Its Awesome!

I'll probably wind up sticking with a GB rom until ICS becomes more stable unless someone reports one that works incredibly well. It's my only phone and I use a lot of its functionality for business or recording video/pictures, so it would be terrible if I had usability issues. Thanks for the input, this is exactly the type of info I'm looking for!

Thanks! I should have also asked which kernel people are using (and why). Themes are great, but I'll wait until I figure out which rom I'm going to use and then just track down a theme that's compatible with it.

If video recording is one of ur main concerns, then stay away from any ICS roms. None of them have properly working camcorder atm.

Or reliable video decoding.
But, I use Bionix Reloaded v1.4 It works very smoothly, is based off of OTA 2.3.3, and the battery life is superb. Coupled with Faux's kernel, its a dream. Are you looking for stability and battery life, or performance and customization?

WHat about the ICS roms... I want to know what people think about the hellfire rom and the eagles blood ics stuff. Im running eagles blood... but want some feedback on the other stuff out there.
Okay, really no one is going to have the same opinion as you. Try them out for yourself and you will probably like one better than what anyone will recommend to you.

Hellfire Sandwich has video decoding pretty reliable.

A good mix of them stability and battery life are the most important, but performance is also a big issue since I run several processor intensive apps on a regular basis. As long as the performance is at least as good as stock, then I'll be happy.
Well customization on OTA is pretty limited, besides different themes on GoLauncher or similar apps. But on the plus side, best battery life by far. Just uninstall apps you don't use like Wi-Fi calling, My Account, etc., and use a replacement apps for the Gallery (Don't know why is wastes battery, but it does. I suggest QuickPic).
Also, for better performance, use a kernel like Faux's that allows Overclocking for better performance, and undervolting for better battery life. Here's a benchmark so you get an idea of the performance.

I am very happy with New Clip. Kwes also has a very nice "ICS like" theme that is terrific. I combined that with ADW ex and an ICS theme for it and I am set.
Everything runs flawlessly. GPS is very quick to lock. Never reboots. WiFi calling works. Blue tooth is perfect. Excellent battery life. It does everything I need a phone to do, plus it is ultra reliable. That is important if you use your phone for business. I can't afford dropped calls, lock ups, or reboots in the middle of an important call with a client.
Eagle's Blood
I put Eagle's Blood GB 2.3.7 on my son's G2X and it has been perfect for several days now. We both are dumbfounded at how long the battery lasts. He forgot to charge it the other night and at the end of two days it looked like he was only about halfway through the battery. Granted, he's at work for 9 hours a day and can't use the phone much there, but that's still pretty amazing to me. I'm on a Sensation and can't get through one day on my battery.
I put Hellfire Sandwich on his phone first, and while it was beautifully done he was having some stability issues (random reboots, overheating) which is why I flashed a new rom in the first place. Since it's his phone I didn't bother with trying to find or fix what may have been causing the issues on HFS.
Hope this helps!
I'm using Bionix with Faux. Best there is.

I wanna switch to ICS but its not stable yet. I hope next built is gonna be better....waking up to random FCs is not fun
So far, [NIGHTLY] CM7 is leading in the polls, and all of the answers have been very helpful. I think I'll try out several of the suggestions. How much of a difference is there in the different kernels that have been recommended?

yet that is what everyone is working on right now. so just be patient camera & video will be working just as good as gingerbread's camera & video.
I could not get any of the ROM's to work with internet or MMS until I flashed Weapon's ROM and used the Stock MMS that he included on the ROM thread. I am also running the G2x-FR/GB[2.6.32.9] Kernal [email protected] and it's running great. Many thanks to the Weapon's dev's!
Not sure if it because I am using Simple Mobile or not but I could not get any of the other ROM's to work.
