[Q] Which is the best G2x rom, and why have you selected it over others? - T-Mobile LG G2x

I'm not new to modding at all, and don't need any technical help. I have been using a stock G2x since it came out and I've decided it's time for an upgrade. I noticed that there are quite a few roms for the G2x (18 listed in the "All roms," thread), and several of them look very well done. I'd like to know which one you think is the best, and why. Very technical answers are fine with me. The things I look for most in a rom are reliability, speed, and battery life. Flashy graphics are nice, but not my key concern. Thanks in advance for your input!

right now there are ICS roms and GingerBread roms. I'd suggest that you pick a GB rom since you mentioned reliability in your concerns. I'd start out by trying with CM7, then EaglesBlood's, thn hellFire Phoenix's. Those are the best GB roms imo. And the only most stable (non of the ICS rom is stable yet) ICS rom is HellFire Sandwich

I use Weapon G2x 3.0 R1 with Faux SV Kernel and Mixer Theme. I use it because its based on stock and doesn't have any issues. The Faux Kernel always me to OC to 1.2 without any issues and Mixer Theme just makes it look that much more fantastic. Its Awesome!

I'll probably wind up sticking with a GB rom until ICS becomes more stable unless someone reports one that works incredibly well. It's my only phone and I use a lot of its functionality for business or recording video/pictures, so it would be terrible if I had usability issues. Thanks for the input, this is exactly the type of info I'm looking for!

Thanks! I should have also asked which kernel people are using (and why). Themes are great, but I'll wait until I figure out which rom I'm going to use and then just track down a theme that's compatible with it.

If video recording is one of ur main concerns, then stay away from any ICS roms. None of them have properly working camcorder atm.

Or reliable video decoding.
But, I use Bionix Reloaded v1.4 It works very smoothly, is based off of OTA 2.3.3, and the battery life is superb. Coupled with Faux's kernel, its a dream. Are you looking for stability and battery life, or performance and customization?

WHat about the ICS roms... I want to know what people think about the hellfire rom and the eagles blood ics stuff. Im running eagles blood... but want some feedback on the other stuff out there.

Okay, really no one is going to have the same opinion as you. Try them out for yourself and you will probably like one better than what anyone will recommend to you.

A good mix of them stability and battery life are the most important, but performance is also a big issue since I run several processor intensive apps on a regular basis. As long as the performance is at least as good as stock, then I'll be happy.

Well customization on OTA is pretty limited, besides different themes on GoLauncher or similar apps. But on the plus side, best battery life by far. Just uninstall apps you don't use like Wi-Fi calling, My Account, etc., and use a replacement apps for the Gallery (Don't know why is wastes battery, but it does. I suggest QuickPic).
Also, for better performance, use a kernel like Faux's that allows Overclocking for better performance, and undervolting for better battery life. Here's a benchmark so you get an idea of the performance.

I am very happy with New Clip. Kwes also has a very nice "ICS like" theme that is terrific. I combined that with ADW ex and an ICS theme for it and I am set.
Everything runs flawlessly. GPS is very quick to lock. Never reboots. WiFi calling works. Blue tooth is perfect. Excellent battery life. It does everything I need a phone to do, plus it is ultra reliable. That is important if you use your phone for business. I can't afford dropped calls, lock ups, or reboots in the middle of an important call with a client.

Eagle's Blood
I put Eagle's Blood GB 2.3.7 on my son's G2X and it has been perfect for several days now. We both are dumbfounded at how long the battery lasts. He forgot to charge it the other night and at the end of two days it looked like he was only about halfway through the battery. Granted, he's at work for 9 hours a day and can't use the phone much there, but that's still pretty amazing to me. I'm on a Sensation and can't get through one day on my battery.
I put Hellfire Sandwich on his phone first, and while it was beautifully done he was having some stability issues (random reboots, overheating) which is why I flashed a new rom in the first place. Since it's his phone I didn't bother with trying to find or fix what may have been causing the issues on HFS.
Hope this helps!

I'm using Bionix with Faux. Best there is.

I wanna switch to ICS but its not stable yet. I hope next built is gonna be better....waking up to random FCs is not fun

So far, [NIGHTLY] CM7 is leading in the polls, and all of the answers have been very helpful. I think I'll try out several of the suggestions. How much of a difference is there in the different kernels that have been recommended?

yet that is what everyone is working on right now. so just be patient camera & video will be working just as good as gingerbread's camera & video.

I could not get any of the ROM's to work with internet or MMS until I flashed Weapon's ROM and used the Stock MMS that he included on the ROM thread. I am also running the G2x-FR/GB[2.6.32.9] Kernal [email protected] and it's running great. Many thanks to the Weapon's dev's!
Not sure if it because I am using Simple Mobile or not but I could not get any of the other ROM's to work.

[Q] Fav Rom in your opinion

So i am currently running eagles blood and love it, super smooth, love the black. Havnt found any other glitches yet. Props to creator. What are some other good roms our there
Before the g2x I had a vibrant and ONLY ran Team Whiskey built ROM's because they were always the quickest and most reliable. When I first got my g2x I saw krylon running around the g2x forums and was very excited to see what he will do. My wife is STILL running Bionix on my old vibrant and I am also running Bionix on the g2x. Battery is a lot better, black theme is very nice, phone is super snappy, and I have NO problems with Bionix.
I have tried pretty much all the gb rom's out there and fauxs aosp 1.1.5 gb rom has been the most stable and smooth build I've used... with his custom kernel the thing is buttery smooth and fast with an oc of 1.5ghz if you want it super fast ... plus its a nice stock gb build with no extra stuff which I prefer ...
right now I'm running Bionix.
It's hard to say anything about one being better/worse than another right now, since they're all still in beta form. Let's get some final releases out, or at least an official gingerbread leak to compare against, before judging anything too harshly. And I'm not trying to say they should rush...just that we should expect some glitches
Here is my opinion.
None is better then the other for the fact that they are all built off the same source. If you look at the change logs for all roms right now it is mostly visual things changed with few backend things. (minus cm7 as they built their own)
Anyways give the devs more time to get more actual development done then compare them.
Stock Rom because it's more stable than any of the custom roms at this point. Every thread I've been reading people are having a lot of issues that's why I haven't flashed yet. Waiting for stable build from official source

Not quite true.
stock has almost all the issues and more then most the modded roms.
The reason you see more people complain about the issues on the modded roms is cause ALOT more people are using them over stock as it is junk.
EB1.04 Froyo. Used with included kernel and just a couple of tweaks here and there. Better than stock, LG camera, no GB issues. I get great battery life and speed with it. I'm not looking for a Quadrant record holder...just something that does what I want it to do when asked.
Now for the moderator in me:
These types of threads have the potential to invite flame wars. Keep this thread civil and helpful so it remains open. Thank your for your cooperation.
I've tried a lot of roms but settled with EB 1.0.4 because it feels like a stock rom but without the resets I kept having the with leaked version. The GB keyboard lags some but its nothing.
CM7 is really coming around but I'm going to hold off until they fix the APN settings. I've used CM since the first nightly and started looking elsewhere after #21. I'm looking to just relax with a working rom ATM.
As far as the various roms, they aren't all based on the same source. CM uses a CM base and their own kernel, EB uses the GB leak, and a few others are from AOSP directly from Google. Lots of variation. I agree that we should wait till we get some final builds until we compare but I think this thread is good for people to know because I've been using CM since it came out and when it came time to find something more stable I couldn't find which ones worked or which ones had which bugs.

I'm a Team Whiskey fan coming from the Vibrant so Bionix is my first choice, But Eagle's Blood 1.0.4 FR is also really good and in fact I'm running right now because it's still 2.2 so it has stock camera which is great!
Once Krylon gets the camera working on 2.3 I will go back to Bionix!
Haven't tried any others because of the APN issues!

No issues on Bionix.
I've played with all roms.
Latest was Bionix. It suffered some miserable battery drain with this rom. I gave it a few days play, with plenty of idle and game time. I'll say it is very snappy, however I couldn't accept going from 100-under 50 overnight idle while I slept.
Great rom and I will try again.
I'm gonna try EagleBlood 1.04 here in a few minutes, as it's gotten some decent mentions throughout the forums.
oh and btw, faux's aosp 1.1.5 got rid of any lag on the keyboard which i think no other rom has been able to fix on a gb rom

I wish they had a froyo version, cause I hate the jerky browser in gingerbread....
yea man i gotta say def eb 1.04 froyo is what is best rite now ive tried all of them and dont get me wrong bionix is the **** and faux did get rid of the keyboard lag and thats a big thing with these tgingerbread roms for some reason but yes all great roms but eb froyo 1.04 is sick got this extra keyboard by lg which i love and the stock cam also butter smooth but when running a oc kernel im having problems with my phone being on charger and it dying and not turning back on n having to do a battery pull so im just keeping it stock and love it still very fast!
The best ROM for me has been EB Froyo 1.04 and Morfic kernel is running great.
I have flashed nightlies, bionix, GB leak, and eb 1.02 and 1.04.
EB Froyo seems to be the most stable and just works for me.

I'm using the stock kernel. I tried the first morfic kernel for the build, and it was very unstable for me. Planning on giving the +48mb version a shot in the future, but stock works so well for me (speed+battery life), it'll be hard to justify a switch.

Feedback Needed From The Thunderbolt Community

If you recently purchased a Thunderbolt ....
You may be in the same boat as me, looking at rooting. Everyone is talking about gingerbread coming to our phones. I haven't seen an OTA as of yet, but it has leaked. located here->
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1225752
Now,
I know that you can root very easy here->
http://revolutionary.io/
and I would play close attention to this video as it provides detailed instructions ->
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UK_CiB2SYk
**WAIT**
Before you dive in, here comes my question.
If you have done your research, there are alot and I mean ALOT of roms to flash for the thunderbolt.
I would like some feedback as to what rom you have flashed.
This will help anyone new to the thunderbolt party as well as myself.
I have yet to make a decision on rooting or waiting.
Your feedback below please.
Thank you all in advance
And as ALWAYS,
Thank you to all the developers who are working there butts off !
I tried out team bamf first, but then they jumped ship to their own forum. So then droidtheory started releasing roms and jumped to him and haven't looked back.
He has a sense and aosp (cm7) version and also dhacker and xpack have released their own versions based off of droidtheory's work.
xpack's senseless rom is very nice. Has the sense base so gps and nfl network work right out of the gate, but no sense (adw launcher instead) so its fast and smooth.

You can't go wrong with DroidTh3orys ROMS.
Root. Now. That way you can make your choice when/if GB actually comes. You can always go back to stock unrooted. You may not be able to root with the new OTA.
Roms? Like many things they are a personal choice that no one can make for you. Having flashed them all, I can tell you they have improved dramatically since I got my bolt in May. If you choose to root, do yourself a favor and try several. You will find the Rom that suits your taste and needs.

100% agree with this guy.
Us leaving XDA doesn't change anything about the quality of our roms. Fact is, many of our innovations end up in other roms anyway (ask ihtfp69 and erishasnobattery).
You can find us at teambamf.net, or rootzwiki.com.
There are many roms to choose from out there. Try them all, then decide.
Thank you all for your feedback. I made sure to click the Thank You buttons on all of your comments.

Multiple reasons, first and foremost my phone behaved the best with ShiftAO5P. I had a very smooth running phone and an amazing battery life with all the bells and whistles turned on. I've been running dasBamf Roms for a month now and love them. I am currently on UberBamf PR3. every Tbolt is different, so experiment and see what works best for YOU. After you install each ROM, make a back up of it. That way, if you install one, that you don't like, you can revert.
I like a fast, customizable ROM without all the Sense bloat so I use Liquid Thundersense. I've only had this phone for 5 days so I really have no other Thunderbolt ROM to compare it to (I ran Gingeritis for a couple hours and the stock ROM only long enough to download Gingeritis to the device; I just hate Sense lol). As far as it goes though I've owned five Android devices total and have rooted and ran custom ROMs on all of them. Only way to go IMHO.

Hey guys, just kind of a poll

right now I'm using skyicecream and its ok not my favourite but cynogen wouldn't let wifi work on my phone haha
let me know what you guys like!
Seems like there's some sort of shortcoming in every ROM available. All the features in my stock ROM work fine.
I was in love with the stock ROM and just rooted. But since my obliteration of the native framework apk I have flashed sky ice cream sandwich and love it. Just want sip over 3g/4g and I'll be a happy camper. But I can't complain the guys on here are doing a fantastic job.
I would alter the framework-res.apk but I seem to have trouble running apktool. Can't seem to load a project correctly. Quite frustrating

I also have a captivate to mess around with flashing and such. Can't seem to find any rom that actually enables sip over cellular data-even though they claim to support it. I'm new to compiling using android and adb and android tools but I do Java programming experience. Ill help where I can.

Curious to other's favorites as well
About a month ago, I sadly lost my captivate and decided to pick up a white skyrocket. Was running CM7 on my cappy and was going to wait for either the Note or sg3 etc etc.
So far I'm still on the stock GB as it is actually nicer than I thought. I've been looking for a ROM worth rooting for and everyone's advice is much appreciated.
Thanks to all for their comments, I might try out a few of these suggestions.
Sky Venom is the best for me! Stock theme and a lot of goodies! i get around 16-19 hours of battery on this rom!
Best and fastest in my opinion would be QuikWiz 1.0.3. and man is it fast. and the battery life is insane as well
I've used SGS 2 beastmod and bombardier, they we're fine but it's annoying not having a rom not meant for your specific device.
I've also used TPC, it was pretty fast without overclocking (I think with overclocking the best score I got was 4579 in quadrant) and stable but didn't have some features I was looking for.
So SkyICS has been my main rom, it's fairly fast and stable (if you don't use the ICS launcher) and has all the extra features you'd want.
The photo's I attached the the phone overclocked to 1.72 ghz, getting 4000 in quadrant and the battery life I had on my first cycle. I used it quite a bit. Music, games, wifi, data, emailing, phone calls, texts - the norm. Although I always turn off wifi and data when I'm not using the phone.
On SkyICS quadrant scores we're all over the place, one test would give me 1500, another 2700 (not overclocked). TPC rom gave more consistent performance but...maybe that was just my settings or something.
SkyICS also has a pretty active development team which is nice.
im using the NexusMod-NoCIQ and its awesome. I wish there was some ICS love though.
Coca Cola Classic ROM. No fcs and awesome battery life.

Historically here at XDA, this kind of posts have been shown to be both useless and conflictive.
The Best ROM out there is the one that fits YOUR needs.
The guy sitting next to you can have different needs, and "feel" that other ROM is "better".
Try the ROMS for yourself, see the changelog, get to know the dev behind the ROM, Read his thread for reports, etc.
For everyone sakes, Thread Closed.

No one can really tell you which is best, as it's all relative. They are both good so try them both out and decide what works best for you. I, personally, don't like these "which one is best" threads as it can be demeaning to the devs. They all work hard and they all deserve equal respect. You can't possibly know which one you like better unless you try them both/all

Downloaded this ROM and after several hours for the FIRST TIME EVER, rooted my G2X, installed CWM, installed this ROM and the GAPPS. Sweet, no I feel so much LESS amateurish.
First BOOT didn't take as long as I thought it would. SHUTDOWN and STARTUP (POWER-UP) are WAY faster than they were on 2.3.3.
Below are OBSERVATIONS not complaints:
I am not a developer, just a user. The interface is really cool (for lack of more technical terms). Video playback is REALLY CHOPPY when it was smooth on 2.3.3. and many of the videos won't even play. The other DOWNSIDE is my BATTERY is DEAD as HELL, been charging for 2 hours already and still only at 80%, with 2.3.3 the battery (which is extended life) would last for a day and a half.
I am in the process of downloading the EAGLES BLOOD version to make my own comparisons. From what I am reading both these ROMs need work BUT I don't know anything about that.
WHAT IS REALLY COOL is that LG doesn't even have ICS in the pipe for G2X yet and now it's on my phone - SWEET.
I so look forward to future updates and ROMs to keep us less talented in the GAME. Thanks again, Mark
AND Now I have SuperUser rights - don't know what that means yet either but I will try to learn!

You'll find them to be pretty similar. Video playback is a known issue for all ICS roms and will likely persist as an issue for a long time (quite possibly until we have a release/source from T-Mobile/LG). Also, you'll notice that some apps don't work too well yet (basically same issue as video playback).
Outside of that, the share the same source, but HFS v1.2 was build more recently, and therefor has the newest commits from Arcee. This includes things like setting data limits and switching storage between internal and external SD. Hell also baked in a facebook sync patch that may or may not be working for people (I haven't tried it, but heard some people had problems).
Further outside of that, each developer has added their own style to the rom. I believe, however, that Eaglesblood isn't due to get the majority of the customization that the other EB roms enjoy until the next release.
Hope that helps.

Right now none of the ICS ROMs are finished, so just use a GB ROM if you're new to flashing.

+1 to this... also each rom acts differently on each phone... so try them both and see for yourself

hellfire sandwich 1.2
I've been using it for a few days and seems very stable no FC yet but I would a reboot at least once a day.
I've been debating on which ICS rom to go with (still on CM7 now)
Probably go with Hellfire because they are on the cusp of a new release, and it's apparently very good.
Luvin the EB ICS
Been using the eb ics for two days now. It doesn't seem to consume as much battery as my previous rom (GB Weapon G2x) and that was a really good rom. Had to change to ics because i seemed to be having reboot issues and I longed for ics.
So far been having a few force closes but am still breaking it in. Seem to be having battery calibration problems as well, but i will give it time. I would say try them all. Max respect to the devs.
I had EB and the 'Music' kept stopping. I installed HF and have not had 1 error.
Well first off, ICS ROMs for this phone are not finished yet and will give you many stability issues and compatibility issues. That being said, you won't know which one you like more unless you try out both of them for yourself.

You can't even use your camera, and there is no media acceleration.
So, no, it is not at all stable.

I was using Hellfire Sandwich v1.2 which has the facebook patch. The facebook patch works great. I had no problem with facebook. I loved it but where I work I don't get good cell reception and wifi calling doesn't work all the time.

I used HFS v1.2 for 2-3 weeks and the camera works perfectly fine. No problems with the camera FC. It will only force close if you try to take video with it. Hardware acceleration is also fixed for v1.2. HFS v1.2 was perfectly stable except for the FC on video and random drop outs on wifi calling.
Imagine if LG released the drivers... ICS would be working perfectly :/

Been using Hellfire Sandwich since release. Here is my run down of what I see.
-Speed is good.
-Memory management works well but will cause FC because of more running processes then allowed.
-Paired with setCPU profiles I get insane battery life.Better then GB.
-Browser issues with flickering when rotating between portrait and landscape. Dolphin will FC as well.
-Bluetooth will drop out sometimes. Unsure if this is the phone or my headset.
-Browser does have video playback issue. YouTube and Netflix app works fine.
-No Widgets? Or I'm doing it wrong.
-No issues with any of my usual apps.
All I can think of at the moment. I use my phone casually for games and browsing.

no widgets? you should always be able to use widgets. But remember with ICS you have to get widgets by scrolling to the right in the apps drawer. I can't get netflix to work..dunno how you got that..the sound works but not the video. youtube works fine.
My Review
As a normal user I can say Hellfire ICS is much better then EB's. In the aspect of
Speed is way better.
Less Laggs while opening apps
Faster browsing then EB's
Stucking issue is less in Hellfire
In short Hellfire's ICS :good: is faster then EagleBlood's as per me... (a normal user not a dev)

Why are ICS roms so popular

Hey everyone,
This isn't a technical question is an opinion question. Why are ICS roms so popular when there are so many things like native video recording and hardware acceleration are missing (do to drivers). I see that development is moving quickly with ICS yet Gingerbread has slowed way down. CM7 is still going strong but roms based on stock releases are, practically, dead. I just wanted to see what the opinions are in terms of switching over to ICS as opposed to using a fully functional rom.
ICS is what everyone wants, and wishes for. CM7 is about as good as its going to get (besides ironing out the kinks like BT and little things) stock is at its finest pretty much. Cm9 ICS is exciting and very nice looking. AOKP's customization possibilities are awesome give the phone a whole new look that make friends jealous (specifically iPhone friends lol).

I haven't flashed an ICS ROM in months. I agree with you. I think it's just more of the mentality "latest and greatest" so people naturally go for it.
I don't want that, I want something that works. LG cam is freaking amazing and, even though I don't take much videos, the option is there with such clarity and ease.
I'll stick with gingerbread even if ICS is never fully functional because cm7 is already perfect for me.
ICS in my opinion performs much better than ginerbread.

I second this...latest and greatest but at the cost functionality...then they complain about things not working properly *sigh*
I'm using CM 7 and don't have any issues...I do flash kernels and am using faux's b5...pretty awesome...can't wait to try harshs CM 7 kernel

Another GB CM7 user here. ICS is the latest & shiny toy, so everyone focuses on that. Almost all apps work on GB, and uses less resources. Plus since ICS & CM9 are more recent, there's more bugs to fix so the perceived "development" going on.
I do use ICS keyboard app & the ICS Roboto font, but don't like the low-contrast blue on black ICS color scheme.

ics has support for multicore devices, gb doesnt. im pretty sure that the JIT has also been tweaked for better battery life. and its pretty haha.

Where are you getting this info? multicore support is mostly in the kernel and since both GB & ICS ROMs use the same kernel on G2x (except Harsh's 3.x), they all support Symmetrical Multi-Processors ('uname -a' shows 'SMP'). I'd like to see some performance numbers between GB & ICS, doubt they'll be much different.

It has the support, but is it available for our phone? And what's the point without gpu drivers.

We have the jarvis kernel 3xxx and his updater/tweaking app for ics, but agree with you guys and the functionality of gingerbread/cm7. Don't forget to check out my interview with cm_arcee, link at top!

Currently I"m on stock 2.3.3.
but for the last couple months i have been on ics mostly for cosmetic reasons.
I enjoyed the new widgets and lock screen options.(Not face unlock)
I really haven't noticed a difference in speed. cm7 and stock are far more stable then any ics build i have used.
I'm actully back to stock now because i wanted to upgrade to the new bb. Probably going to stay this way until linaro gets integrated with hellfire sandwich.
ics
google put a lot of work into making ics a lot more polished, obviously they can't make the design appeal to everybody so the only way you can really tell if you will like it better than gb is to try it, I recommend the hellfire sandwich rom, it is by far the most stable and complete rom, and we are looking at linaro in the next build which means that it is 100% faster than stock android

hellfire sandwich pg 502, hfs already supports new bb
I use stock rooted with the new baseband and its extremely stable
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA
i too updated the baseband and love the new stock 2.3.4, but i also like running the latest cm7, everything just works (well except for BT right now LOL)
better battery life and video are the reasons i stay on GB, but i do love ICS and flash it all the time when someone releases a new version (Genesis and Eaglesblood are the ones i use)
in ICS i really like the chrome browser and task manager when you hold home. the rest is about the same but i get a little better battery with EB build2 and i just changed to HFS so hopefully it keeps the better battery.
there is also hardware support just not in the menu menu, flash and openGL are supported.
