Ok so I got a goldcard, visionary+ and temprooted then permrooted with no issues. did one click s-off, went perfect. Flashed leedroid v3 and revolutionary theme. Then thought i'd have a go at eng s-off and doing a new radio flash. eng s-off went ok. then when i flashed the radio and rebooted it updated everything and it appears i'm back to stock android everything.....not rooted or anything any more by the looks of it??? I don't get what happened....Anyone??

I've attempted a good few ways now but they're all far too complicated for me. I just don't understand where everything went...I didn't brick my phone or anything, just reverted back to stock rom :S

I am new to this rooting stuff and been spent most of yesterday learning and asking questions. Here is what I did and some questions I got from it.
1. I rooted using the guide from ace hack it, took me a few tries but got it working.
2. Noticed I went from GB 2.3 to 2.2 after it. So is there a way to get to 2.3. This will lead to another question a few.
3. I loaded my first Rom off the SD and it was Leedriod. That gave GB 2.3 but was having difficulty with gps. But I was happy to know the rooting and Rom laps worked for me.
4. So I tried the offical ATT RUU through usb and HTC sense. It worked but also put me back to stock. Is this a way of putting your phone back to stock? I do have ace hack it on the phone because when I reboot I can get into it but if I select recovery from the menu it seems to lockup my phone.
5. Is the term Rom and RUU interchangeable? I see people using both or am I reading it wrong?
Thanks for any help. I have been reading pages of this stuff and its making my head spin. I just wanted to ask some questions to help understand this better, since I'm new to it.

Oh I forgot one.
A lot of instruction say to 'clear cache'. How do you do that? Is that the wipe cache option I see from the ace hack it menu?
Thanks

Ruu=Radio Update Utility
Rom=the OS you see/use on the phone.
When you ran the Ruu, you unrooted your phone. You'll have to rerun the Hack Kit to regain root but not S-off and to be able to flash a different (preferably custom) rom.
Do you have a preference for Sense or AOSP?
I figured that I had to rerun which is ok with me.
I don't really use sense because there aren't many options to it. So I would try asop but o don't know what is

If you're S-OFF, all you have to do is flash ClockWorkMod recovery to regain root; no need to redo the whole hack kit.

If you ran the RUU, it will return you to a stock ROM, but you are still S-OFF which is the biggest hurdle in rooting your phone. If you want to root after running the RUU, just flash ClockWorkMod recovery via HBOOT and then install a rooted ROM.
That's dang good info. From what I knew, you had to rerun part of the hack kit to reboot. How does flashing CWM root the stock rom?

Hey Tx, RUU actually stands for ROM Update Utility. Just didn't want to get others reading that confused.

It appears we're both half right.

What does RUU stand for?
It stands for Radio Unit Upgrade. But please forget this name: it is confusing, because it upgrade the Radio Rom & the OS ROM, or only one of them.

It doesn't, but once CWM is installed, you can install any of the multitude of rooted ROMs available.

Easy enough to get the real answer. When I first saw you call it Radio Update Utility it didn't sound right. So I googled it. I saw about 4 names that people gave it including Radio Unit Upgrade but then I thought where did I see it before. Oh yes, right from the upgrade utility.
So I tried recovery again. And my phone keeps getting locked up. The device appears with a red triangle with a red exclamation mark. So i tried the downgrade from the hack it kit. It worked but i still get the same thing. So i tried reverse gold card and i got a error. The same that i got before i reformatted the SD to get the root to work.
So later today, I will reformat and run the hack kit again. I am probably going to try Coredroid ROM.
So I flashed the ICS OTA to see if my signal improved, and it was the same so I wish to install ARHD ICS but cannot without S-OFF and S-OFF is just all round useful.
I'm still S-ON with 1.27 hboot, and have managed to install ARHD but still S-ON. Does anyone know a way to get back to GB stock or S-OFF 1.27. I have tried an RUU but it always fails, and using A PG85IMG.zip doesn't work (just stays on parsing or reboots a lot).
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated and will do all I can to help myself and you guys.
Thank you.
Bump, really need help. I can't flash anything from bootloader, not RUU.zip or firmware, it just reboots or says parsing for a long time. Really need to fix this.
You can't S-OFF 1.27 yet

I understand that, but is there no way to get the phone into a state where I can use an RUU to downgrade to gingerbread? Like, at all?
No, as you don't have S-OFF
Although I believe a guide is being written to 'brick' the phone on purpose so you can downgrade it but it's not ready yet (not my work)

Alright thanks man I've seen your posts a lot so I trust you know your stuff a lot.
Guess I will stick with this for the time being, at least my phone works now.. kind of haha.
hello guys! i am completely clueless now... ive been wandering around this forum for more than 4 hours. and i just can't find any help.
my situation is as following:
i tried to unroot my desire s to get the warranty back with this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1460713
at some point i accidently flashed hboot 2.00.0002. than i was stuck with the ruu update's error: 140..
i have a goldcard but it just wouldn't let me downgrade to this ruu: RUU_Saga_HTC_Europe_1.47.401.4_Radio_20.28I.30.085AU_3805.06.02.03_M_release_199410_signed i am pretty sure that this is the right one...
i got my desire s at an o2 shop here in germany and it comes unbranded.
i tried so many guides, but i can't get out of this misery.
although i was able to get to the recovery (4ext touch), unlocked via htcdev, but unrooted and S-ON.
now my phone boots and gets stock at the ics fallout "htc one" bootscreen.
is there a way to get my desire s to be stock again?
Wierd you can access recovery!!!
Well All I can say is that never try to downgrade from any ics rom to stock ginger bread rom without downgradin your misc version mate. And unfortunately, i think you have to wait for official stock ICS rom.

yea, very wierd, isn't it?
i tried to fake a misc-version downgrade via adb cmd and i was able to do it once, but it was still higher than the ruu version.

Actually I myself encountered this problem using exactly the same guide but somehow i was able to find the higher RUU which did the trick for me. Try to find some higher RUU.
Otherwise go for jtag or xtc clip if u can't wait..
BTW update is just around the corner if you dont want to apply hardware methods

Dats nice to hear it
Having unlocked the bootloader and having a functional custom recovery, all you had to do was to run misc_version script from recovery, reboot to bootloader, lock it and proceed with RUU flash. Nothing more.
Got your same problem. I was stuck at the bootloader because I had my desire s unlocked with HTCdev.com. Relocked it and flashed with a previous RUU like 1.47... it worked and then flashed hboot and radio...
u shd hv just unroot n den lock ur bootloader with the token provided when u did htc dev unlock
run d misc ver. changer n zergrush
and den run RUU ...

Problem solved, thanks man, you saved me ALOT of stress. I also stumpled on a nifty all in one root program gor gingerbread, so this problem wont ring up again. but again, thank you.
I wanted to get my Verizon M8 on 4.4.2 back to stock, and I found and followed this guide.
Flashed RUU
Relocked Bootloader
S-On
I got through everything successfully, except I can't get SuperSU permanently removed now. The in-app remove thing doesn't work and the Universal Unroot app didn't work. I Googled furiously and found things like this (part 2) and this, but nothing is working.
Is there anything else I can try?

I had this same problem man. I first had to run Dottats 4.4.4 RUU that was rooted, reset all flags and them run his non rooted RUU. I didin't s-on as I still wanted the option to mod my device if I changed my mind about complete stock later, but according to the thread you should still be able to RUU. This completely got rid of SU for me.
