I mean I rarely use the phone, much less 100+ Mb at a time, but looking at my usage log im at 4.75gb!!!!
HOW, I never used to go above 2.5gb on my G2. The only thing that may be causing the high usage could be the new google music app. I uninstalled it to see if its the culprit, and if it is then its going to suck because i really liked and even started depending on that app.
Here are a few screenshots of my t-mobile logs.
Please someone shed some light on this!!!
So reference that date and time and check to see when that Google music app was installed. If you are streaming, you will rack up the GeeBees.
Theres no way I would stream 300+ mb of music...i used to listen to online radio and not even pandora will use so much data in such a short amount of time.
It would be great if someone else who has the google app can chime in

If this is the result of using the Google Music service, then I'm glad that I decided not to use it and uninstalled it from my phone. I was really worried about how this would affect data usage, especially considering the data "cap" that T-Mobile has in place.

If it is the Google music app, then each song is being streamed at like 20mb or something which is ridiculous.
Ugh and I REALLY liked it, I had 300 songs up there already and enjoying the cloud service.
Is there another app that is similar? Anyone know?
EDIT: I have uninstalled it and will report back at the end of the day to see if data usage has returned to normal levels, if it has then my only conclusion is that it was the Google music service.
Amazon cloud service for music is similar I believe
yes my usage had doubled and I do not use any cloud based services. I have gone from 1gb of data usage a month up to over 2gb
google music is the problem yesterday I did a test
checked data usage was at around 250 mb
streamed music for 2 hours
checked data usage it was over 900 mb
WTF 650 mb for 2 hours of streaming
it dont even make sense your better off just making available offline if you wat to listen to music

So, was my hypothesis correct that GMusic was the culprit?
So, as a sanity check, I took OP's first block of usage as a test:
~130MB usage in one hour
= 1.04Gb
/ 3,600 seconds in an hour
= 289Kbps
I'm guessing that the bitrate for GMusic is dependent on the song, but has an upper threshold somewhere to ensure quality (i.e. GMusic will compress 360Kbps to sub-300 to ensure stream quality).
Seems to me that 289Kbps is a bit high, but within reasonable bounds for higher-quality streaming. Did I do the math right?

You may be right, if I actually streamed music for the entire hour, which I don't believe I did... I would maybe listen to about 4 or 5 songs max, I mean just look at what a previous poster said before me...he used 600mb in 2 hours of constant streaming.. Which comes out to 300mb/h...do the math there and see what the bitrate comes out to.
Either way, after uninstalling google music my data usage has returned to normal levels. I will post a screen shot when I get on a computer.
Something fishy is going on with the way google music streams music

Based on what I've gleaned from Google searches, here's what I calculated:
First some hard numbers --
• 1 Mb = 1,000 Kb = 1,000,000 bits
• 1 MBps = 8 Mbps
• Google Music Streams at a maximum of 320 Kbps
• 60 minutes = 3600 seconds
So if you stream Google Music at its maximum bitrate nonstop for a full hour this is how it works out --
320 Kbps × 3600 = 1,152,000 Kb/hr
1,152,000 Kb/hr ÷ 1,000 = 1,152 Mb/hr
1,152 Mb/hr ÷ 8 = 144 MB/hr
So the most the music streaming itself could use on the download side of things is 144 MB/hr. Perhaps the app is downloading/uploading other data as well tho as part of the streaming process? I'm not sure.
I have my Google Music app to stream over wifi only.
It's a little lower at about 140MB/hr since it's 1024K, not 1000K.

There are 1000Kb (kilobits) in a Mb (megabit).
1024 KB (kilobytes) in a MB (megabyte).
My math is sound.
Somehow I had it in my head we were storing data. Your calcs should be correct then.

Lol yea I hate calculating megabits and megabytes, etc. I always get confused at some point.
To the OP, can you check in your settings and see if caching is enabled? If it is, your music is being downloaded first before playing. To truly make it stream, you need to disable it I believe. This might be another reason for a rise in data usage?

i want to customize the stream buffer and need some guidance
specifically, radio streaming apps that i've used seem to not have a very large buffer size, and if the network speed drops (as it usually does while moving in a car) once the buffered data is played through, the sound stops, until enough of a buffer is filled, and the network speed is better again. Then it starts playing again, that is, unless the player background service has been stopped.
i think that this could be greatly minimized if the stream buffer size was ALOT bigger. i'm willing to wait a bit at the beginning of my streaming experience for the sound to start playing. if it means that i wont get any stoppages in play, im willing to wait at least a minute or so if i have to. i dont care.
so, the question is, where is this value of buffer size being set? in the music player? in each individual app? in the kernel? wtf? where is it? libmediaplayerservice.so?
i have searched the forums, and have not found this answer
found these: http://developer.android.com/reference/java/io/BufferedInputStream.html
http://developer.android.com/reference/java/io/InputStream.html
http://d.android.com/reference/java/io/PipedInputStream.html
and cant make heads nor tails out of them.
i'm a "cut and paster" and im not bad at it
but unless i know where to cut and paste, im lost (usually)
hey, an app or setting that allows one to choose the buffer size (if it is a global setting) would be awesome, maybe something for spare parts if thats possible

Now that the voodoo sound kernels are out i would love to use nexus as my main music player but i simply cant fit my libary on.. all my music is 15gb. Ive seen some apps like subsonic but u need to leave your computer on all the time..
Are there any better solutions like shrinking the music or something like that? Really bugging me

I've mentioned this before, and I'd hope it'd be launching today but it did not: Google Music, as it is currently known, will search your computer for music and then give you access to the music you already own to be streamed to another device while also allowing you to buy more music.

Ya...I'm starting to understand the complaint =/
Two of the best options that I have tested that are available now are Audiogalaxy and Subsonic.
Audio galaxy is extremely simple to setup and is a pure streaming option as it does not cache the songs to your device. It has an option to stream the music in high quality or in lower quality if you are in a non 3g/wifi area. Also, its 100% free.
Subsonic is more difficult to setup because you have to enable port forwarding on your router. Some people do no like to open up ports on their router because of the potential security risk. Subsonic not only streams the music to your device but it also cache's to your internal storage which comes in handy if your signal drops. Another feature is via a web page you can download any song in your library, my brother downloaded have of my library from his pc at his house. The web service is free but after an initial 30 day trial the android app costs, cant remember how much atm.
Overall I prefer audiogalaxy for its simplicity and ease of use.
Do you find it heavy on your data usage?
The main issue I have with audiogalaxy and subsonic is that you need to have your computer (source) constantly on or else you wont be able to stream it to your phone.
mspot is a good choice to put your music directly onto its servers so you can play it from the cloud. however it only offers 2gb free and if you want 10gb+ of online storage you have to pay per month.
I have decided to go with grooveshark and rdio for my music streaming. at least i get an endless selection of songs and I can download the songs and albums Im interested in listening to at that point in time.

There is an easy setup guide for subsonic. Just search subsonic here and it should show up. I'd prefer subsonic over audiogalaxy simply because it supports folder structures. I don't use playlists much because all of my music are organized via folders.

Subsonic only uses data if the music isn't cached on your phone already. So if you find yourself listening to different music every single day, then it might use a lot of data. Otherwise, if the music is already saved in your storage, it will just play it from there rather than streaming it again. You can also set up the storage size you want it to take up on your internal storage. I set mine up at 500 MB.
Also, subsonic is supporting videos. Not all formats yet since they are still working on it, but they are supporting one video format (forgot what it was).
So yesterday I had FiOS installed at my house. I have the 50/35mbps tier. Now on both my Nexus 4 and my Note II, if they're connected to my FiOS Wi-Fi, Play Store app downloads are EXCRUCIATINGLY slow! I'm talking about it takes 15 minutes to download a 4mb app! Browsing the play store is as fast as you'd expect. Screenshots in pages load instantly as do videos. But tapping install is the most painful process you've ever seen! It's slower than EDGE! The speedtest.net app on my phone is showing well over 30mbps which is around the limits of what Wi-Fi is capable of. What's going on? It feels like the Play Store is being throttled but that's crazy!
The YouTube app is also VERY slow. This is kinda unacceptable..

Google play and youtube are both deathly slow at night. Takes hours to download a 10MB app, and youtube videos fail to load or buffer every other second. I have 20/5 FiOS and can get those numbers easily with any speed test. A proxy/VPN resolves the issue, so it's Verizon's fault somewhere along the line. I've been looking for a solution for over a year now and still haven't found one. Calling the service unacceptable is going very easy on them.
Same issue here. So freaking weird. Downloading form the play store is slow as hell. I am force to use my phone hotspot.
I know for a fact its a combination of FiOS and Play Store.
Tablet + using my t-mobile hotspot, Play Store download is fine.
Tablet + Wifi = Play Store download is impossible.
Tablet + ethernet using OTG Host = Same problem. I even try a different router. Same problem.
Only Play Store is a problem. I can browse fine.
Hello,
This has been happening for over a year but it has been getting worse region by region. This **** needs front page news on tech sites.
For all that wonder the issue is with ISP's CDN (Cache servers), I had problems for the past year with youtube all devices. Now this has crossed over to Android apps and this is messed up. I have 75 mbps and download @ 10MB per sec on most services at any time. Only Google is effected.
Most apps have a 39 HOUR download time!
Youtube has been for a year, about 1.5 weeks Google play just got thrown under the bus on CDN servers. There is nothing wrong with you equipment or your network.
Everybody send this into Engadget, Verge and etc.
Look at the searches: https://www.google.com/search?q=fios+youtube+fix
**EDIT**
You can also try blocking a range of CDN servers from your device or router (for all devices) this does not work for all because you have to find your ISP's CDN IP block, then block those IP's. You can also see the network drop, on you you tube play a music video then right click "Video Info" then you will see the download speed for the video go 0kbps to 100 kbps to 0 kbps, over and over.
I've been googling for an answer and haven't found a definite. I've been using the youtube preload feature to preload videos while at home so that I can watch them later during down time at work without using up all my data. Lately though it seems like it will only preload a couple videos. I plug in my phone an am connected to wifi and I see the arrow appear on a couple videos in my watch later list but not all of them. Does anyone know what could be causing this? is there some sort of limit for preloading or maybe a bug in the app? I tried clearing both youtube and media storage data cache with no change.
update: I went into advanced settings in youtube app and uncheck the "HD video over wifi" and went back into watch later folder and now most of my videos have the preload arrow on them... so, could it have to do with a file size limit? I would really prefer to have them in high quality, but I also don't want to use up all my data to do so... i hope a file size limit is not the case or that there is a work around for it.
Same here
Hey, I have the same problem as my phone only preloads one or two (max) videos on my youtube app and I've actually unchecked the HD option already.
My videos are usually 1hr long, so they should probably be what, 200 / 300 mb each? (depending if they are 360 / 480 resolution)
Does anyone know if there is a limit imposed by YouTube or if this is "self-regulated" depending the available amount of free space in the device?
I have noticed this also. I don't want to burn my data at work and the preload only grabs a few videos. Some of mine are only 10 minutes but still not downloaded.

I tried this solution and the mobile Youtube app did preload more than it had before. Might give it a try http://lifehacker.com/preload-entire-youtube-videos-by-disabling-dash-playbac-1186454034
Same problem here. Preloading works sometimes, regardless of size or HD. Tested with cm 10.2 on encore and stock 4.3 on nexus7.
I would really like to know why and when are some videos downloaded.
Is there a way to capture YouTube debug or trace logs?
Any help appreciated...

Yeah, I'm wondering the same thing. Been looking online for a few days. I can't figure out a rhyme or reason as to why some videos preload (green arrow), some have a white arrow, and some have no arrows. I've attempted deleted and adding them again to the list w/o success.
additional note for some, if they haven't noticed...the setttings section mentions "wifi and charging" required, not sure if this is a factor for some, doesn't seem to be it for me
not sure where earlier post has the 'hd setting' to uncheck. was this an earlier version of the YT app?
still troubleshooting....hmmmm.
I do not know but the answer but my educated guess is that youtube only Preloaded some videos, as it has some constraints on cAche size. It does optimize ratio of loaded videos vs available Cache, that's why the videos load it are random
Hello all. I just a Nexus 5 last night. I am really enjoying the stock Google Launcher. Two things I would like to do are:
1) tap/double tap the screen to wake up. Pressing the power button on the side is fine, but I would like something else when I am driving.
2) Pandora unlimited skips. I am not asking for free/no ads. I currently pay $36 as a Pandora One customer. I would just like to be able to skip more than 6 times.
When I rooted my Galaxy S5, it changed a lot of things on the phone - most for the better. However I am really happy with the Nexus and would love to keep it as stock as possible.
Thanks for any help you can give
Erik
1) You need a custom kernel for that, then enable the feature thru trickstermod
You can wake the phone when the screen is off by saying "OK google". To do this you must enable it in the settings of the Google search app or in the settings of the Google now page. It will only work with screen off if it's plugged in to power. As for the Pandora unlimited skips install exposed framework and get the module called "Pandora patcher". There are kernels to double tap to wake, but it's a huge battery hog, I wouldn't recommend it.

You can use xposed with the Google launcher, you will need root for that though. Root doesn't change your phone at all, it will just give you access to install cool stuff. Xposed framework is the best way to stay stock and only add the features you want. As opposed to using a custom rom.
Iirc, GravityBox module has settings specifically for the stock launcher.

I have read thru a lot of the threads and posts you have commented on. I appreciate the knowledge you bring to the forum. Given your background in making custom kernels, etc. I would think you would understand the desire to tweak and improve upon software. I am a current subscriber to Pandora One and will continue to be. However I do not see how skipping 7 or 8 songs impacts their bottom line.
While I have never written Pandora a direct email, I have posted/commented about my displeasure of the song limit skip on their blog.
As much as we can tweak things with Android, there's a limit to what can be done with a proprietary, closed source service like Pandora.

right, but the limit is there for legal reasons, not because we cant. and on xda we follow the legality. but google is indifferent.
Pandora One is nearly useless on mobile now. Mobile has always been locked to 64kbps (so you don't get the increased sound quality) and with the removal of unlimited skips all you get is the removal of ads. I'd honestly recommend switching to Slacker. It has higher sound quality even in the free version, and the "Plus" version still gives you unlimited skips. They also have a much larger music library so you don't get the same song playing over and over as frequently.
Edit: As far as the double-tap to wake feature, just keep in mind you will see some additional battery drain when idle.

I use Play Music for a lot of features it has over Spotify (caching radio, viewing songs that have previously played on a radio station, managing tags on your library music,etc...) but Slacker's still a great option for a free/$4 per month radio-only use.
I've been using a lot of rhapsody lately, and paid the $4 a month for it. I really love that i can listen to any album or song by any artist, that I want. and all skips are unlimited when listen to the "radio" with it.

I was able to find a pandora .apk that has the unlimited skips. I also have Spotify with I pay $9.99 a month for. I have tried Pandora, Spotify, Slacker, Iheart, Amazon, Google PLay, Mog, Beats and another one that I can't remember the name of but the app icon is pretty. I just find the Pandora radio plays more music that I like and want to listen to. Example: Old school hip hop - Pandora will play Dr Dre, Tupac, Biggie, - all of their hits. Spotify plays the same artists but songs I have never heard before. Very few hits.
I will try Slacker again and see if I can make that work for me. I do appreciate the help guys - thank you.
Oh and I have given up on the double tap once I found out about the extra battery usage.

Not true.
Spotify is 320 Ogg on extreme quality as it happens, much better than MP3
Play also depends on the source. If you upload something, it matches the album to files that already exist, based on tagging an audio signature. You don't really think they're hosting 14 million copies of Brittney Spears, Hit me baby one more time do you?

Anything that matches is matched to 320kbps MP3. It doesn't match to other people's uploaded files. Anything that's subscription based (which is a fair comparison, since Spotify doesn't even allow uploaded) is also 320kbps.
Ogg isn't CBR so I'm not really sure what settings Spotify is using. If they're saying 320kbps then it's probably q9. But Ogg is only better than MP3 at low bitrates, as you get up to 256kbps they're transparent to each other. A trained listener may be able to hear the difference on high-end audio equipment, but you're certainly not hearing the difference off of the Nexus 5's DAC. And I'd still say it's ridiculous to say that Ogg q9 is "much better" than 320kbps MP3.
Anyway, this has gotten completely off topic.
