[Q] youtube app not preloading all of watch later videos - HTC One S

I've been googling for an answer and haven't found a definite. I've been using the youtube preload feature to preload videos while at home so that I can watch them later during down time at work without using up all my data. Lately though it seems like it will only preload a couple videos. I plug in my phone an am connected to wifi and I see the arrow appear on a couple videos in my watch later list but not all of them. Does anyone know what could be causing this? is there some sort of limit for preloading or maybe a bug in the app? I tried clearing both youtube and media storage data cache with no change.

update: I went into advanced settings in youtube app and uncheck the "HD video over wifi" and went back into watch later folder and now most of my videos have the preload arrow on them... so, could it have to do with a file size limit? I would really prefer to have them in high quality, but I also don't want to use up all my data to do so... i hope a file size limit is not the case or that there is a work around for it.

Same here
Hey, I have the same problem as my phone only preloads one or two (max) videos on my youtube app and I've actually unchecked the HD option already.
My videos are usually 1hr long, so they should probably be what, 200 / 300 mb each? (depending if they are 360 / 480 resolution)
Does anyone know if there is a limit imposed by YouTube or if this is "self-regulated" depending the available amount of free space in the device?

I have noticed this also. I don't want to burn my data at work and the preload only grabs a few videos. Some of mine are only 10 minutes but still not downloaded.

I tried this solution and the mobile Youtube app did preload more than it had before. Might give it a try http://lifehacker.com/preload-entire-youtube-videos-by-disabling-dash-playbac-1186454034

Same problem here. Preloading works sometimes, regardless of size or HD. Tested with cm 10.2 on encore and stock 4.3 on nexus7.
I would really like to know why and when are some videos downloaded.
Is there a way to capture YouTube debug or trace logs?
Any help appreciated...
Bob

Yeah, I'm wondering the same thing. Been looking online for a few days. I can't figure out a rhyme or reason as to why some videos preload (green arrow), some have a white arrow, and some have no arrows. I've attempted deleted and adding them again to the list w/o success.
additional note for some, if they haven't noticed...the setttings section mentions "wifi and charging" required, not sure if this is a factor for some, doesn't seem to be it for me
not sure where earlier post has the 'hd setting' to uncheck. was this an earlier version of the YT app?
still troubleshooting....hmmmm.

I do not know but the answer but my educated guess is that youtube only Preloaded some videos, as it has some constraints on cAche size. It does optimize ratio of loaded videos vs available Cache, that's why the videos load it are random

vTap - search and play unrestricted online videos (Youtube ect...) Excellent!!

A new startup company has come up with a great way to search and play online videos.
Download PPC version onto my Tytn and it works a treat!!
Try it from... http://www.vtap.com/
Cool, thanks.
Okay. This is cool.
- Has one of them "as you type" searchbars for video and wikipedia. Type in "kitten" and it shows in nanoseconds all the relative stuff about kittens.
- Really fast, as from software point and in downloading videos.
- Seems to have gazillion video sites.
- Plays videos really smooth. Has different quality settings and an audio only mode. (Tested with Wizard)
- Background and playlist mode for video downloading. Good if you're using cellular networks.
It does have few bugs and it doesn't really have a way to list videos like "top 10 from youtube", instead it shows a list of some news, sports and political stuff on the search page by default.
They also seem to be planning a java version for the functionally challenged phones
I recorded a quick overview of the software
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWm5YkNsB6A
Btw, sorry for the quality. I didnt know that the youtube-online recorder does that.
aside from just playing "unrestricted" video, this is pretty brilliant
Brilliant piece of software.
Just one thing I noted immediately after its installation.
1) I tried to install this on the storage card. But it actually installed in the programs folder of the main memory.
2) After I installed this software I keep getting the sound I have associated with the event "Connection Established" ever few seconds though actual connection does not take place. As a fix I have disabled any sound for the event "Connection Established". Anyone else noticed this. My device is the HTC Touch.

I agree, would really like to filter the results by site (i.e YouTube only).
Since it downloads the videos in order to play them - I nice feature would be to beable to save the videos for later repeat views.
Pretty good app so far.
One way to filter clips in vTap
search youtube and select youtube group and then do search...pretty cool... they are doing search with in the group....

Wow, very nice, love how it shows all videos, organizes some into videos, shows all video sites, etc and is VERY fast in both displaying videos and information as well as buffering and showing the actual video.

I have contacted the support for vTap, and they have indicated that a fix should be available shortly.
Great news aalvino!, thanks
Works Great on my Touch!
Btw... there's a new version now that supports installation to storage card
great app to make youtube and other video sites work on a Prophet. But, I might just be dumb, I can´t find a seekbar or a similar tool that would allow me to jump to a specific part of the video I´m watching.
Is there something of the sort in vTap?
is there a way to fast forward or rewind the video in vtap? the arrows arent highlighted...
Very cool app but not at all new. I had a version of this installed almost a year ago..never did understand why people were having so much trouble with youtube videos when vtap played them just fine from the beginning. Good application
This is nothing new at all.
Vtap has been around for quite some time, i don't know why you have a new thread started for it and calling it a startup complany? I have had this installed since last year!
The post actually started last year...

Infuse Video Playback Performance

After messing around with my Infuse on stock, custom Froyo and Gingerbread ROM's, I've noticed a pretty major difference between it and I9000-based phones like the Captivate: video performance.
On my Captivate, hardware-accelerated video playback up to 720p was rock solid. If it played at all, it always played smoothly, and this was regardless of running programs or RAM usage. With the Infuse, Froyo ROM's support hardware-accelerated video playback up to 1080p, but there seem to be some disadvantages.
The most major thing I noticed is that RAM usage affects video playback. If I use my phone for a while and allow the RAM to populate with background apps, I immediately run into issues trying to play video: high-bitrate 1080p video will no longer play. Instead, I just get a black screen and no sound. Additionally, several 720p videos I tested will lag heavily. Occasionally (using an app that supports both hardware and software playback like MX Video Player), playing a video will error out and force the app to switch to software decoding.
Clearing the RAM using the built-in task manager and restarting the video player immediately resolves these issues for the most part. There still are some effects that always persist though: certain 720p videos (which play perfectly on my Captivate) will still show some hints of lag using either hardware or software decoding. Additionally, I can't seek or resume playback of high-bitrate 1080p MKV's: the screen goes black and the sound stops playing. I can only play these files from the beginning for them to have video and sound.
Except for the issues specifically relating to 1080p (which don't apply to Gingerbread ROM's), all of these issues are observed and reproducible on any ROM, including stock Froyo, custom Froyo (Infused 1.6), Hellraiser + any I9000 JVQ ROM and Infused v2.2.3. This is severely disappointing, because I upgraded to the Infuse expecting a media experience equal to or improved over the Captivate with the SAMOLED+ screen. I also didn't want a Galaxy S2 because the Yamaha audio chip it uses is a dealbreaker for me.
While that was mostly a list of observations and a not-so-subtle rant, would anyone be able to offer an explanation for this? Or perhaps my case is somehow isolated? Can anyone else confirm this?
Edit: Here's a YouTube video showing the RAM usage playback issues: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPiCPSWUTCY
Never had any trouble with video playback. I have a couple of movies on mine. Running Infused 2.2.3

I'm not sure what to think of that, considering Infused 2.2.3 doesn't even support 1080p playback. But even leaving that out, would you be willing to test sample videos? I mean I can't really explain this better without posting a video of a side-by-side comparison of my Captivate and Infuse playing the same set of videos to show that the Infuse lags on certain videos while the Captivate is smooth.
*bump*
I did some additional testing. Running Infused 1.6 Froyo, I loaded up every app on my phone and then minimized them with the home key. The phone was still running smoothly and there was no signs of lag, but the RAM was as full as I could make it. I then opened the stock video app and attempted to play my library of videos.
The result? Only 2 videos played. One was a 720p H.264 MKV encoded from a Bluray, and the other was the 1080p trailer that came preloaded on the phone. Both videos lagged heavily. The rest of the videos (lower quality 720p or higher bitrate 1080p H.264 MKV's) did not play at all: just a black screen and a seek bar that didn't move. I then performed a level 2 clear using the task manager. Result: all the videos played fine without lag.
Conclusion: video playback on the Infuse is definitely tied to RAM usage, which is NOT the case on the I9000/Captivate.

sorry to inform you but I had no issues with that video. I wonder if you may have something stuck in data somewhere (some apps keep data on the sd card) or If you may have bad blocks on your sdcard. I haven't rebooted my phone today and loaded up ram by playing flash videos in the phone browser getting ram all the way up to 340 mb used. 140 was the browser alone and I started that video just fine. ill keep testing but if I were you id back up the sd cards and wipe the phone through settings (does an internal sd format as well unlike the recovery wipe) after a flash with the unbrick and start over. if it persists id get a new phone and for the sake of being thorough I will test it more but so ar I couldn't reproduce the issues.

smooth as butter. sometimes weird hard to explain stuff happens. I can't explain it.
I can see how a kernel issue in gb could cause it with rogers lame firmware but I don't see the issue with infused 1.6 so it doesn't seem to be an infuse specific issue at all.
Ok, I just finished completely resetting, reflashing and reformatting my phone. On first boot, I threw that exact file I sent you back onto the memory and tried to play it. Still got a black screen with no sound or video. Opened the task manager, performed a level 2 clear and tried again. Video plays but still lags and hitches every few seconds. I mean, if I'm really the only one with this issue...???

sorry looks that way. but you should have only moved the videos back for testing. i know it shouldnt matter but computers are weird. maybe it's a deficientcy in your cpu? could only apply to the gpu inside it. you just never know. if you can reproduce the error with the trailers that come on the phone and compare it to a store model maybe they'll swap it out for you. if not call customer service and raise hell or send it to samsung.

What do you mean only move the videos back for testing? I didn't put anything on the phone except for that video file. The CPU doesn't seem to be the issue, because I tested against my Captivate using CPU Spy: both phones run at 400MHz during video playback, which is good enough for lag-free video on the Captivate (and should be the same case for the Infuse).
I can't get much to happen with the trailers that came with the phone, because only one is HD and it's a small file with black bars and a lower bitrate than most encodes. If I leave the phone running for over a day with the memory full, I can get the 1080p trailer to lag, but that's not very helpful for getting an exchange (especially since I got my phone at Costco and there are no active models in the store).
But that's not the issue anyway. The problem is that I've been enjoying 720p video on my Captivate for over a year. Now I've upgraded to the Infuse, which is supposed to have even better video performance and its having issues with all of my 720p and 1080p videos.
I'm almost positive this isn't a hardware issue though. Are you sure the entire opening sequence of that video is smooth on your phone? It doesn't seem like you've ever seen the video before watching it on your phone. If you haven't, please watch the video side-by-side on your computer and phone and look for any differences.

i meant not to restore all the files from the sd card backup when you test. just the files you want to test.
it is extremely smooth i cant seem to do anything to make it not smooth. i even bogged my phone down sequencially opening every app on the thing and returning home with the home button till it started lagging badly but when i open the video player it is butter smooth. really i cant explain your issues, im just speculating possibilities.
but ill try it on my computer as well.

Edit: Can you tell me the build number of your Infuse (the 4-digit number under the battery, between S/N and SKU)? Mine is 1104.
oh wait there it is. the video player just stopped working.
not sure what changed but i put it on the dock and tried starting it again and no dice. i dont think this is ram related.
the issue for me is intermittent at best though. after a reboot it didnt play at first but 2 minutes later it was fine.
mine is also an 1104. april 2011 that's weird i wonder if you got a refurb. i think i picked mine up launch week.

Hmm, I wonder if that's unrelated to the issue considering how easily it happens on my phone and how much trouble you had to go through. If the video still doesn't lag on your phone at all (when you compare it to a computer), then I'll assume you're not getting the same issue. Also, are you using the kernel that came with Infused 1.6, or did you flash another one?
infused as is right now. nothing oddball here. atleast not right now. i have used some init.d scripts on it for loopy smoothness and memory managment mods but this time it is only the rom as gtg released it with the included kernel.
ok found the issue sorta. i cant tell what causes it but if you launch the video from my files or other file manager it works fine. if you open it from video player it doesn't. the video didnt show in my video player at first so i opened it from my files. after that it was in the video list in the video player and didnt work. there is something odd going on here because video player doesnt show in recent apps if you open it from the file manager. also after opening the video player it doesnt work from my files till you kill the video player. it is just weirdness. there is some messed up programming going on here. but try killing the player and opening the file with file manager. and yes i made sure it is using the samsung video player when it asked!
sorry i asked you to wipe your phone for that but if you dont do that and use the unbrick you can see all sorts of issues and no one is sure why.
Maybe that's why mine play fine. I've never loaded a vid into the player. Just opened them bygoing to the gallery.

I need to use that player for my videos to see the subtitles (the video I sent you has subtitles that will display in MX Video Player and mVideoPlayer, but the former is better at displaying them).

[Q] youtube and android system data using

Hi! My issue is simple: i'm using htc one xl. Anytime I try to watch a video on youtube, android system takes a huge part of the data and makes the videos keep buffering every 2 seconds.but i don't notice an excessive android data use when just browsing. It's fast and smooth. On other devices like galaxy s2 s3 or s4 and other brands, youtube is very smooth.how can i stop android system messing up my youtube streaming.help me please.thanks.

Hi! Thank you.I tried greenify root and hybernated maximum google apps but there is still no improvement.Android system seems out of control, grabbing all the internet data when i launch youtube app or viewing videos with the browser...maybe you can show me how to really make it. Thank you for your help.
Hi! I found a solution for youtube streaming. I don't use any youtube app. I just use the default browser. I enable desktop view and enable flash player too. And when I click on a video I set the quality on 144p or more.depending on my network strength. And that is all!! Now I watch easily and smoothly videos on youtube! Android system takes almost nothing from internet data while streaming videos. I can even vew them fullscreen mode. My brother's X peria Z had the same youtube issue. When I enabled desktop view and installed flash player on his device, everything goes smooth!!
I guess it could help others in the same situation. Thanks.

No 1080p option on YouTube? Try this fix

I'm used to this issue on my 3 months old Galaxy Tab S, it has never worked as expected showing the maximum 1440p resolution until you clear YouTube cache and data, force close it, disable it Uninstalling updates, once this is done then you go to Play Store and look for YouTube, it should shows Enable, and one you enable it, and update to latest version, then you have your full resolution options including 1440p. Sad thing is that everytime there is a new YouTube update we need to do the same again.
I did the same steps on my Z3 just to see that it didn't work, so I went back to apps and saw that there are 2 more apps directly related to YouTube, I already have disabled Live On YouTube as I tried to use it and never weekend and then I realized that I'll never use it again. Anyway, I decided to do the same steps mentioned above but this time I also disabled the 2 YouTube extensions that are there, went back to the Play Store and Enabled and updated YouTube and when I went back to the app there are all the options including 1080p, one thing though, it seems to not stay skeeter by default, just select it and then re-start the video and you will see it on 1080p.
I re-enabled the 2 YouTube Extensions back just to see if it breaks it again but it seems that it still working so that's good news.
I hope you can fix it with this information, at least until the next YouTube update.
Hey erasat, thanks for the info.
Just tried, but I didnt understand which apps you meants by "2 more apps directly related to youtube"? - the Live On youtube & the youtube app itself? is that what you meant, or is there one more?

On my D6633 with latest Custom HK firmware, there are 2 apps named, YouTube extension and YouTube Karaoke extension in addition to the Live On Youtube that like I mentioned was disabled already.
There was a Youtube update last night, for my surprise and contrary to my Galaxy Tab S, the 1080p settings survived. So even better.
Sadly after Tuesday's update it seems that this is no longer working, just like it happens in my Galaxy Tab S. I've been doing the same steps I've done a lot of times now and what I described above and this time is no longer working, Highest resolution I can choose from now is 720p. Really frustrating...

[Q] PVStar+ Pro missing from Google Play Store? Anyone know why?

I'm not even sure if this is the right section to ask in, I've never really left my specific device forums before but here goes!
So I just upgraded from a Sammy S3 to a Nexus 6 and I had a paid app called PVStar+ Pro on my S3. It lefts you play Youtube video's while having the screen off unlike that POS Google Youtube app!
So I setup my new Nexus 6 and I just realized it's not here on this phone. So I checked my apps on the market, nope. So I copied my APK off my S3 over and but it doesn't seem to work right. I can't search videos. For example, I've searched Tiesto, Hardwell, the Wonderland Music Festival etc and it comes back with zero results. Plus I don't think it's fully PRO.
I tried checking out the home page of the dev but it's all in Japanese so I shot them an email and so far no reply.
One of my favorite apps! Just wondering if anyone knows WHAT happened to it? Even Google searching brings up nothing.
I have the same problem. My PVstar+ didnt show any search results what so ever, so I thought thay I might need uninstall/install it, but after I uninstalled it I noticed that it was missing from google store. After a while I found the .apk file on another site but the problem with the search results remain.
Too bad, this was my favourite player.

Howw exactly can google remove it from devices? I saw other youtube background players are still there... anyway good job of it's true... no one will buy their service and probably use itunes instead. Really smart.

Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. Try using the "Video search" button in the main screen. Be warned that Google can break search on Youtube remotely on any app – they routinely do it for old Youtube .apk's so you can't use them anymore.
I believe nothing new happenned in this case? I loved PVSTAR, so maybe there's some info from devs? Any homepage I can visit?
Thanks, and sorry for digging that up
I like PVStar+ cause its the only Youtube streamer I could find that 1) doesn't require me to log in to Youtube and 2) will keep playing in the background even when you X out and go to the desktop. The only problem is once you go to the desktop you can't go BACK to the app without making the video you're streaming start over from the beginning.
But yeah I haven't been able to find another Youtube streamer like this, so I'm sticking with this for now. Already saved the APK if I switch device (rooted with Titanium Backup).
Hi, I have noticed that pvstar+ is in the Amazon appstore and it is updated to 2.6.2 version, while my installed version is 2.5.11, probably the last that was available on the play store.
How can I install the new version from Amazon without lose all the cached music?
Fun on the appstore
Hi, I came to have the same problem as you guys, not finding the pvstar app anywhere on the playstore. But looking at other similar apps, the recent updates had the users mad because they couldn't listen to music in the background as well.
This is not one singular occurrence and I'd love to write one angry email, but I don't know where to send one...
This is a low blow.
Pvstar+ pro version, difference from free version?
updated below with answer to own question
The Pvstar+ which is free on Amazon app store in version 2.6.2, how does that differ from the donation "pro" version that was available from play (last version 2.5.9)? Did the regular non-pro version from play display ads? I don't remember it doing so, but I bought the pro very shortly after finding out about the app. The Amazon version does not display ads from what I've seen, and both amazon's 2.6.2 and 2.5.9 pro from play can still do background streaming.
Was pro just a support the developer thing with identical functioning as the free version? Cached copies of their respective play store pages don't seem to be available so no help there.
There was this issue with many videos not being played at all by pvstar+ before, possibly all videos that were only available in. FLV format from Youtube.
Pvstar+ is perhaps only a frontend in app format for the streaming site at http://sp.pvstar.dooga.org since the app needs to connect to pvstar.dooga.com to be able to play anything not in your devices local cache.
The developer does not seem to answer emails. Someone who is fluent in Japanese could give it a try to see if there are any answers to be had from the official source.
