Well I must admit Im an idiot and cant follow directions. After much hmm trying I finally got root yesterday and then thought I could do the mr2 update before the Rom that I wanted. Well I started to do it and then read it would wipe root which it
did and then I couldnt get back to where I wanted and re rooted. If Gingerbread doesnt come OTA this week I will again do more reading and try again.

hey guys,
bought my samsung captivate two days ago and i love it. from reading all the posts about how rooting is awesome i finally took the plunge and rooted my phone with the one click root program. followed the directions to the teeth, everything went fine. even went as far as downloading clockwork and backing up my rom.
few hours later, im totally blown that i rooted my phone. i realized i threw away my warranty.
is there ANY way to unroot the phone and make it totally stock and make it seem like the phone was never altered? i read some answers of "yeah" and some answers of "once your rooted, you can't get back" (i remember reading about an article about how some android phones like the nexus one, once you root theres no going back period). the program i used had a unroot button but im not sure if that would wipe everything away to factory settings and erase all traces of the root.
i know im effing stupid for not thinking it threw. but hey, its good that i came to my senses before i loaded up an os.
to be clear, my phone is just rooted. nothing else. im not running cognitive rom or anything. its running the stock samsung 2.1.
so can anyone PLEASE PLEASE help me solve this problem?
im a total noob when it comes to android.
it took me 20 minutes doing that one click from reading the directions over and over again lol.
i need some step by step directions for stupid people
okay, so i followed the directions to unroot. the programs that were installed when i rooted seemed to have disappear. to be extra sure, i reformatted my sd card and than factory restored the phone (from settings/privacy). quick question though, after i pressed "factory reset" my phone rebooted and than for a quick second i saw the same screen i saw when i rooted (the black screen with the yellow font? looked like a system command prompt i guess). it came on for a sec and than disappeared and it booted regularly. did that happen because i did a factory reset or did that happen because im still rooted?
wtf is wrong with me. i just want my unrooted captivate back (and my warranty lol)
odin to stock with master clear.
There's a thread under android development something with "stock rom" that should restore your phone back to factory.
If you did all of that then you are definitely back to stock now & theres no way of detecting your phone was rooted. You could of gotten away with just using one click to unroot. Thats all I did when I returned mine after a week because my gps never worked at all. I dont think they even did anything to check if it was rooted or anything. Hows your gps on the new one by the way? Mines still bad but at least it sees some satellites now. My old one had a hardware problem where gps wouldn't do anything at all.

When you use odin to flash back to stock does that restore the AT&T bloatware as well? Or should I use TiB when I first get the phone to get the bloatware back on?
Thanks,
JOe K.
After trying to exchange my phone for another phone (thinking the GPS is a hardware issue) I had rooted and flashed a custom rom. I reverted back using ODIN master clear and ODIN 2.1 rom (Which puts bloatware and everything on it) and there's no way to detect it. The only time it will truly void your warranty (I believe) if you go into the store with a custom rom or if you go into the store with a bricked phone and they figure out you were modifying your phone.
thanks for the answers guys! why is it that you cant "unroot" a nexus one? i heard they'll always be able to tell if your rooted once you do it.
Sorry if this is known already, but in the process of rooting my phone again after returning it to stock, I stumbled upon a simple and quick rooting process. I started with Bubby's rooting GUI, and noticed that after it pushes the downgrade it reboots into HBOOT and I had s-off. Well, since this is what was needed to flash custom roms, I rebooted my phone instead of downgrading. Placed angelchen1111 Inspire Stock Rom with Root on my sdcard. I turned fastboot off then powered down my phone. From there I held the power + volume down button to go back into hboot. It found the custom PD98IMG.zip created by angelchen1111 and flashed it. A few minutes later, I am running a stock rooted rom. Took about 10 minutes (maybe less, just really throwing out a number). Anyway, thought I would share, and sorry if it has been already.

interesting observation...i'm not sure if i got s-off before downgrading though, but i'm not really sure either way since i came from WinMo and have no idea what s-off is lol.
moderators - can we move this to the dev forum?
Well, in order to flash a custom rom, you have to have s-off. Downgrading is a custom rom. I will look into it this weekend and have a kit for simpler rooting.

So when you returned it to stock, did you turn security back on? I'm sure you already know, but the RUU won't get you back to s-on, although it will unroot your phone and replace your rom with a stock one.
No, I play with my phone all the time and return to stock via the stock rom. Then I root via the old method using Bubby's tool. But I am frustrated with the SU fc, so I wanted to find a simpler way to root. This is it so far. Half the time, no downgrading roms.
Haem... a question... it may seem obvious but for me is not... the last ROM installed by 'bubby automatic process' isn't a stock rooted like the angelchen one you used?
i'm confused..
Sounds like the cats meow! How about SU? Is it working by way of the flased rom or still an issue?
I have had no problems since i have rooted this way at all. I have SU access and no FC errors.
So I did not know this. If you return to stock, you still will have s-off. So this will work but only after you do an initial root I believe. Still testing though.
How do I root the new stock rom. My brother just installed it by using the HTC Sync and I guess he lost root and CWM. Any ideas on how to root it?
found answer. kinda

Well, if you are on the latest at&t update, if you go to the aahk webpage, it will tell you if there is a way to hack it. Two weeks ago which is the last time I checked, they did have a long way of hacking it, but it's not for noobs unless you are able to follow the instructions to the letter.
I don't know if they have found a fix to it.
Now, if you use the long way, to flash a rom it's going to require additional steps. However, I/we don't recommend it.
If you feel confident doing it, go ahead. If not, it will be best to wait for them to solve it.
Edit: lost root? Is he still s-off?

As long as his phone doesn't freeze again he said he's just gonna roll with the new update.
Thx for your help!
I have a brand new stock verizon S3 and am wondering if I can use the MrRobinson root method to root for the very first time. I swear someone in one of the forums said they did but it sounds like most people are using those images to just update. I originally tried this 4.1.1/4.1.2 method and it bricked my phone on flashing the VRALEC bootchain step, everything looked good in odin, the phone looked like it tried to restart, then went black and never came back. I got a new phone and am wary of trying the same method again. If that is the method I have to use any thoughts on what could have went wrong?
I appreciate any input.
There should be no problem using the Mr. Robinson file in Odin. I have flashed the bootchain that soft bricked your phone and had no issue. Your following the Odin instructions exactly, right....just checking. Everything needs to be installed using the PDA slot unless it specifically says to put the file somewhere else....I have not run into that yet. You had problems with Odin before so that makes me a little apprehensive advising you to use it again.
The Mr. Robinson 4.1.2 file is not the ota. Use the 4.1.1 ota file so you can grab the 4.1.2 ota. Before installing 4.1.2 ota install ota voodoo rootkeeper....temp unroot, take ota then reroot. Pretty sure that's the only way other than flashing the bootchain that will get you on stock rooted 4.1.2

I actually had the video demo they have linked open and was watching that then pausing and following the directions and making sure everything I was doing was identical. I really have no idea what happened, I've read over the directions a few times watched the video again and I can't see anything I may have missed. But it hard bricked my phone, I couldn't turn it on or get back into download mode or anything.
If I can just use the MrRobinson method on a brand new unrooted phone I will do that. I think the phone was already on 4.1.2 when I got it, so that won't matter using the 4.1.1 ota file? I've been flashing roms and toying around with my Incredible 2 since the day I got it basically and have never had any problems. Now that I had this issue with the S3 i'm scared to try anything . It seems the S3 has a good community though which is the main reason I went with it over my other options.
I would be scared to use Odin if I had your experience too. I've used Odin several times without any issue but I have not used it since the 4.1.2 update....although I'm sure many have without any problems. Yes, you can flash any OTA via Odin even if your going backwards . I can't say you won't have any issues because I don't think you should have had an issue the first time.......maybe wait to see what others think?

idk why that happened. My best guess is if the battery was low prior to you using Odin then it may have needed charging. But that VRALEC/Odin method is proven working countless times and those files linked in the OP have been used countless times.
Just know that with mrRobinson's pre-rooted images, you'll still need to unlock your bootloader with say EZ Unlock v1.2 (available on Rootzwiki so google it) before you decide to flash custom roms/kernels.

Like I said above, may have been the luck of the draw or it could have needed charging.

If you want to have a 4.1.2 rooted stock version, you need to download MrRobinson, K3 full wipe image with root (http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=9390214368362234355), unzip it first, then use Odin to flash this, then install Voodoo OTA root keeper from the market to preserve root, then let OTA update back to 4.1.2, finally use OTA root keeper to restore root. Done, simple and risk free.
You guys rock thank you!
As a followup for anyone that may stumble upon this thread in the future, I used the method provided by buhohitor and it worked like a champ. I flashed the mrRobinson image used ez unlocker to unlock the bootloader then used ez recovery to flash the latest version of TWRP. I'm now running this Paranoid Android 4.2.2 Rom and it is fantastic!
Back in September I Rooted, flashed, big parted and ROM'd my Xoom. Incase you haven't already guessed I haven't got a ****ing clue what I'm talking about. My Xoom is a 604 UK Wifi Xoom.
OK that's not strictly true I get the basics but I'm not even vaguely involved in the android/rooting scene.
From what I remember I rooted my Xoom the installed omni 4.4.4 using TWRP and CWM. I also had my Xoom overclocked to 1.5ghz.
Anyway fast forward to last night and I turned my Xoom on for the first time in a while. I was playing about with it and noticed under the system updates there was an update available so I clicked to download and install it.
After the install it appears to have screwed up my root access, I assume most people on here knew this would happen! I thought as it was coming through the update option on the tablet it would be fine. Anyway I just wondered how to get the root back? do I have to wipe the tablet and start again?
I'd be greatful if someone could let me know the procedure for this sort of stuff. And also guide me to the best/latest firmware/root/partition/kernal/rom whatever.
Thanks,
Chris
