[Q] whats the point of a tablet anyway - General Questions and Answers

I own the Asus TF and while its an amazing device, I dont see a purpose to owning it, other than the coolness factor.
I also have a 11.6" Acer Aspite laptop and a HTPC connected to my 50" 3D TV and Denon HT System, not to mention the htc Thunderbolt phone. Between these 3, is there something that the tablet can exclusively do that I cant with them?

nope, its just a coolness thing, copying isheep is a favored pastime of android users

one of the best examples of what a waste they are happened a few weeks ago at a friends house.
He put music on on his PC
He sat on the sofa
He then grabbed his Ipad
He tried to remote control his pc, swore some, poked it a few times for a few minutes and THEN finaly changed the volume.
All rather odd really as his PC is right next to his sofa, he could have easily just reached over with his arm and changed it in a few seconds......
So really, is there actually a point to a tablet other than pose/geek factor? I honestly can't think of one, which is why in my house we still don't have one.

Well for me, I use mine to basically stay on the net comfortably with decent screen size while I'm somewhere where I cannot access a computer.
Example, no TV in my room, so go into another room, bring NC with me. Profit.
Next example, girlfriend's house, no computer, tether phone to NC, Profit.

I had something similar happen this weekend. I have netflix on my Samsung TV, on my 360, and I can connect to it through my pc/laptop. But no, I was flashing a GB rom on my Thunderbolt to get netflix to work on my phone, and when it was done, was watching a movie on the tiny screen. My wife made fun of me for it...

Web (including remote access to work), books, and movies, 7 inch screen, sitting lightly in my front pocket or in my satchel for 2 hours a day of commuting by train and multiple trips by air every year.
At home? Yeah, I use a pc. At work, mostly the same, though I am starting to use evernote on the tablet instead of writing out scribbles during meetings that litter my desk later.
I used to have 2+ books, a notebook/sketchbook, and a laptop with me... always. My spine and shoulder think the nook color + wifi tether is the most awesome thing ever. Maybe it's not for you, but it's not without merit for sure.

Phone vs Laptop... where to draw the line?

I'm sure a lot of you have thought this over so i wanted to get your opinions.
The other day I was telling a friend about a phone with a 5+ inch screen and got to thinking (I love big screens, cant stand less than 3")... At what point should a person just buy a netbook with a 3g card and use VOIP on a bluetooth headset? I mean, my wife has a MSI Wind and honestly It is small enough I could carry it almost everywhere with me. It also cost less than my phone!!!!. The Wind isn't even one of the smaller ones. It has a 10.2 screen. Look at this one though http://gizmodo.com/5084147/umids-mini-netbook-makes-eees-look-massive (they should have made the screen wider but I guess they were trying to use off the shelf parts to keep it cheap).
I think the lines are definitely blurring and I honestly cant decide what to do for my next phone. A netbook with a 3g router is sounding very tempting. What thoughts do you guys have? or do you plan to just buy both lol.
I'd draw the line where you'd feel like a tit holding a netbook against your head tbh. Phones are for making phonecalls remember
Smartphone's are going to die out soon. Why do I need a Touch HD AND a netbook? I don't, I need a littlebitty Nokia that only phones and texts - discuss...
pocket
it´s true that you can carry them, but even little notebooks can´t be put inside your pants pockets...yet....
It's about convergence, having one device that does it all.
I still see idiots carrying a cellphone, an ipod, and a notebook. And they use the phone to go online with their notebooks via 3G.
I just have my i780 and the extra battery pack (i780s come with an extra batt with a stand alone charger case).. and oh yeah.. I also use it for GPS navigation.
Go for one device that can do it all. Though your need for a big screen will be the deciding factor.
Personally i have all three and carry two, Trinity and iPod, on a regular basis as the battery in my Trinity struggles to last all day sometimes when i am reading and replying to mail let alone trying to listen to music as well. Also my iPod is big enough to hold my entire library so there's no "wish i had that with me today" moments. The notebook is for computing somewhere at a desk/table that isn't my own, usually my parents or friends, and as such usually hooks to their WiFi.
You don't stick the netbook to your ear you use a bluetooth headset. Also some of these netbooks are getting small enough to stick in your pocket! Look at the one I linked.
Battery life would be an issue though. My wifes Wind lasts about 45 mins on battery. Those reviews that claim 2.5 hours are BS. Maybe if you turn the screen on super dim, wifi / bluetooth off, switch on econo-mode and read an ebook. In an even smaller netbook with about the same guts I bet battery life would be horrid.
For me this is the limit line between lap top and phone
I still think we might see a movement away from big phones, or people using two devices but not concurrently. For business use a decent netbook with 3G and bluetooth headset would be ideal, providing someone can actually one day make a battery that lasts a whole day yet doesn't have to be on wheels.
However, as useful as that'd be in work, it's not really a solution for how do I phone my missus to tell her I need to come home from the pub?
So I think a big device (with 3G or similar) for work and a small/tiny device (with radio and nothing else) for play/always. Aren't we at the point of a Bluetooth sized headset that has a phone in it? Or a comedy sized watch - aren't LG launching one soon?
The laptop would need to remain on (idling) the whole time, and they're just not designed for that today. In the end, having a laptop with 3G inside and a bluetooth "phone" or having a basic 3G phone and a laptop is not so different... you always need both parts.
I'm also using both a trinity and a Gigabeat F40. I just don't have the same response quickness, autonomy and storage on my trinity. So unless we get a pdaphone with a real battery life (something like 10 hours under heavy use), with 64GB of storage (it should arrive soon enough) and that doesn't struggle to playback a mp3 while surfing the net, I won't leave my loyal mp3 player at home.
I guess that 1 year from now I may find an appropriate device on the market.

[Q] Remote control tablet over the internet...

My In-laws liked my Asus so much that they bought got themselves one. I set it up and they are loving it. They live a couple of hours away tho which makes it hard to be their support person. I can walk them thru simple things but sometimes onsite support is required and that is hard. They are 2 hours drive away.
So is there any app besides RWD, which will allow me to control their table over the internet from either my tablet or a pc? Everything seems to be the reverse, controling your pc from the tablet. I would like to take control and get the job done quickly rather than hunt and peck each step or driving 4 hours round trip.
I know about remote web desktop. It is exactly what I am looking for except it requires root. But since they purchased it and may need to send it back for service someday rooting is not an option for them. Trust me I have tried to talk them into it. Actually I havent checked but since it is so new it is probaly a b70 and can not be rooted...
Any ideas?
As I don't believe there are any software-based screensharing options available at the moment, you can go the ghetto route:
Have them point a webcam at the screen and talk them through what to do over Skype.
It is the other way around because the point of a tablet is to have an even more mobile computer so u can leave your bulky and heavy pc behind, thus creating the need to remotely connect to your pc when you are out and about. You are looking for a solution to a very small, niche problem. All I could suggest is, Google search and keep looking around on the market.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
There is a program called Bomgar, I don't know the price of it, but I doubt it's cheap.
We use it at work to connect to PCs and they have an android app that would do what you want.

Galaxy Tab 7.0 plus running HOT - anyone else?

Love this tablet but this last few days it has started to get really warm on occasion.
On the left side, about an inch in from the SD card slot, the temperature really builds up quickly starting first on the back of the device and eventually getting so hot on the glass it becomes uncomfortable to hold and to swipe. I've seen 48 degrees!
I have noticed this happening when using Dolphin HD browser and particularly if Skype is running in the background.
I wiped the tab, didn't reinstall from market and just loaded Dolphin and it didn't make any difference.
I'm guessing faulty device since there are only a few isolated reports of this online.

Really strange, Phil. Based on your recommendation in "other" forums I turned in my Nook Tab and got a GTab7Plus and I'm just lovin it. Does everything I'd hoped it would do and more I haven't even figured out. So far, (knock on wood) I haven't gotten the Screen of Death nor has the unit gotten hot for any reason and I'm using dolphin browser exclusively. So......you may have a defective unit. Good luck.
Yeah, I think it was faulty. I took it back to Best Buy and they had not had any other returns for this issue.
Unfortunately they are also out of stock so I don't currently have a tablet at all! Seeing what is coming down the pike in the way of tablets I might just wait and see what transpires in the next 3 months. If I get antsy then I'll just pick up another GT7+ (or back to a Nook Tablet if the CM9 project advances quickly).
Also, do you see a color cast on yours at all? I noticed that when there was a white background, for instance reading a book on Kindle or Nook apps, the right lower side of the page had a warm tinge - pink/peach colored. It was quite irritating.
Having issues with Nook app opening my Nook ebooks.

FloridaPhil:
I have received my 7+ and downloaded and installed the Nook and Kindle apps without a hitch. The Kindle books are fine but I seem to be having a problem opening my Nook books. Darn, I am in the midst of a great book and hate reading on my phone.
Any tips on how best to install and manage my Nook ebooks? And, I have a 32gb sd card which I haven't installed but plan to tonight. Will that make a difference? Should I "format" the card before installing on the 7+? How does that work?
Thanks a bunch!
I noticed on the nook software that I needed to open the software and then reopen it before the book would load. Second time is a charm I guess.

Mine as well, in the same location as you specified too. Gets damn hot in that location with I'm using it in the car for navigating with Google Maps and it's plugged into the charger. Also in the same scenario the charge level is still going down and not up
I' ve been using VTL Launcher and had some previous issues with my home wifi (couldn't reconnect so my tab was always trying to find it again and again). After resetting router and mainly uninstalling VTL Launcher my tab stopped to be hot and battery life increased rapidly. So I was almost decided tonreturn it due to this problems but since then everything is finally ok and start to enjoy this tab (previously had GT7 original and Note).
Regarding navigation with google maps- consider that there is also huge use of data amount so warmness is probable. I'm using Sygis Aura and has no problems with hottness and also not original car charger has enough power to charge on the roads.
So far haven't noticed the tab getting hot. Just trying to figure out how to use Kies. What a friggin nightmare! Why have they not simplified the Kies interface? It is so convoluted!

Interesting - but mine was totally stock. Yeah, I had added a ton of apps but it was running regular TouchWizz. My little Nook Color running CM7 has exactly the same apps and doesn't even get warm.
what are you using kies for? my computer (win 7) didn't recognize my tab until
i installed kies, it also installed drivers so i can now transfer files
To FloridaPhil: And how long is your battery life? Is wifi ok? Well I' ve noticed then, that our tab doesn't have still very apropriate task managing and this can be causeb exactly by this. Take a look in settings, applications and battery use...I couldn't believa my eyes but even I'm using good task manager with automatic shutndowns of slected apps, there are still huge amount of running apps that drain battery and may cause getting hot. Next thing as well was a fact, that even when wifi connection held perfectly, there was still word 'searching' each couple of seconds (take a look in wifinsettings...)- so next possible reason for getting warm...

It's only searching because your at the wifi settings screen. If you are at the screen where different wifi networks can be selected, android (logically) thinks you might want to select a different network, so scans. If you STAY on that screen, it assumes you want to keep scanning (why else would you stay on that screen?)
This is something that all wifi enabled android devices do. It's NOT scanning every few seconds if you aren't on that specific settings screen...
Gary
Thanks Gary for reasonable explanation, yes this is logical. I was just confused from this, cause not Galaxy Note, nor previous Tab or Streak was behaving like this. But is true that this is my first honeycomb machine and I may not realise this before or it had been different in settings.

My Galaxy SII (gingerbread, AT&T, SGH-I777) does this as well. Even my iPhone does it.
I'm using Kies Air to wirelessly transfer and synch my contacts, calendar, etc....... Experimented and have transferred photos and some other files. Also worked using the USB cable and my Windows 7 recognized and installed drivers. It recognized the SD card as my E drive.
Regarding the heating up issue, so far I have not experienced this. The battery use is under control when I turn off all wireless when I leave my home.
Getting used to the Touchwiz interface but I also installed Go Launcher EX and use that sometimes.
Video playback is awesome on this little tab; last night I was watching movie trailers and was surprised with the sound as well. The Nook's sound was always a bit weak.
I installed an anti-glare screen film and it is awesome for reading. Doesn't detract from the beautiful display and the fonts are crisp.
Regarding opening my Nook books I realized that it worked as soon as I installed my SD card and I downloaded my books so I wouldn't have to deal with having a wireless connection to read my books.
Playing around with the wallpapers and customizing the Samsung screens and installed a super cool "steam punk skull" live wallpaper and it is amazing! Found it free via the Amazon app store....it is fantastic! I also found other beautiful live wallpapers via the Amazon app store including snow scenes.
The tab connected flawlessly to my Samsung Galaxy 4G T-Mobile phone's access point and used that to stream Pandora and download some Kindle books. It was done in my office which doesn't have the best T-Mobile network access and it was surprisingly fast and smooth. No stuttering of the music and emails and Facebook worked great.
I ordered the 6' long usb cable for the tab via Amazon and it has shipped; hopefully it is well matched and charges up the tab just as well as the stock 3' shortie cable. I noted other comments regarding the slow charging of the tab and found that turning off the wifi or simply shutting it down speeds up the charging dramatically.
So that is my report so far and let me say I am enjoying the 7+ tab immensely.
It got to 40C (104F) today while I was playing GTA. The device it's naked (no covers or anything). I'm going to take it to service centre next week :-(

Well i guess thats pretty normal, mine goes up to 42C sometimes.. I guess it depends on your surrounding and climate.
You sure it's a normal thing (this temperature range)? I'm here in Thailand so the ambient temperature is hot to begin with, but the thing is; with prolonged used my hands get uncomfortable.

She says it's about the same. So i really don't know what to think any more, but I'll take it in anyways just for peace of mind.

[Q] Battery life, specifically for hard core camera users?

So I called T-mo about a broken BB9900 (yes, long time BB user here) and oddly enough they offered the one s under my BB warranty. Weird but ok. I really like the one s and android and almost went with the htc amaze back when I was trying to decided between BB and android. I love the size of the S and will probably only really miss the keyboard of my BB but anyway, not trying to start a debate about phones, sorry. So, coming from BB, which are notorious for long battery life, I am wondering how a one s would stack up.
I am a drive by home inspector. Meaning I drive by houses and snap a pic or two and usually bluetooth the pics over to my lap top sitting on the front seat to up load them to my company. I probably visit 60-80 houses a day and take a couple of pics of each. Usually don't use the flash, only every now and then. My BB will generally make it till mid afternoon before needing to be charged. Since starting this job I don't use the phone for conversations much anymore nor do I use the internet or media features much. Mainly pics, texts, and emails.
I have read great things about this phone and the battery life but nothing specific to my type usage. Anyone have any experience with the phone using it kinda like that?
Thanks,
Chad
Oh, and not sure if it matters or not but camera setting are on the very smallest pic it can take. Not taking quality pics just quantity.

based on my experience when i went out of town for a vacation, i used my One S as my primary camera for the whole trip. i unplugged the phone at exactly 8 AM in the morning, during the trip, i captured exactly 148 photos in total, when i get back home at around 9-10 PM in the evening, the battery still has 18% remaining. i'm quite happy with it. not mentioning that i played music on the road, played games a little, and texted a couple of SMS. the battery life of the HOS is great!

Droid Charge hardware upgrade

So, a coworker pointed me at a chrome book, and said, "Look, it's awesome, 10+ hours battery!" I was skeptical, I've heard horrendous things about chromebooks' usefulness, but then I found out chromebooks give you access to TTY, so in theory you can use all the nifty CLI utilities that make Linux/Unix systems so great to work with. So I went back and reexamined how I use my endless supply of various devices, from desktop to mobile phone. For the most part, I use my phone to call, stream, or browse. I use my laptop to connect to my development machine (It's just inconvenient to hold my code on my local machine for a variety of reasons, and it's not really safe practice anyways.) A short while ago, I was looking for a tablet with a data plan, and I couldn't find one - even carriers with unlimited data plans don't support tablets with unlimited data plans. Damn it! Then, as I was researching chromebooks, I realized something spectacular - despite tablets having a thicker, and therefore heaver screens, tablets are in general 1/2 the weight of chromebooks. (wtf?) So I went in search of system on a board computers, and I found MK802, which could cover all the essentials - a keyboard w/ trackpad, wifi, bluetooth, audio, video. But then I realised - I've got a heap of old android devices from the G1 all the way up to my most recent (but still outdated) Samsung I515 (whatever that's called in common-folk-tongue). And I thought to myself, "Why not use the PCB out of one of those old, working-but-outdated phones to make a DIY tablet or chromebook which will probably weigh less than COTS chromebooks, register as a cellphone with the carriers, have unlimited LTE data, and 20hr battery life?" The Droid Charge seemed like the best candidate. Although I have a couple extra I515s, the awesome thing about the Droid Charge is that it has an HDMI port. Work on the fly, come home, hook it up to a proper monitor, instant win!
Unfortunately, I haven't ever worked with drivers, firmware or the likes. I could probably MacGyver a way to hook up a keyboard with a touchpad to use the micro usb jack (I mean I'd just need to emulate hooking the DC to a dock, right?), but the real blocker for me would be the screen. I imagine there MUST be a way to swap the stock LCD and touch screen digitizer on the Droid Charge, and hook up a 10-12in one, probably from some other Samsung product, but that's completely speculation. I was hoping someone on here could help me out with hashing out how to do the screen swap up to a 10-12in screen.
Thanks,
Misha
