I bought my Captivate on 12/13. For the first 3 weeks I had it I had almost no problems with it (other than the usual GPS issues). About 3 weeks ago I rooted (1-click Root), installed the 1-click decripple, SGS Tools, Titanium Backup and OCLF and removed some of the bloatware, but stayed with the stock ROM. Got some noticeable improvement as far as Quadrant benchmarks, but about a week after I did all that the phone started freaking out. I had my first of 2 unexplained shutdowns. Simple things, like receiving calls, would lock the phone up. Then I started having force closes when I tried to use a speed dial. The past week the battery has been doing strange things like losing 60% charge over 4-5 hours without using the phone for anything. It will somehow go back to normal and work fine for 4-5 days. Today, the force closes and lockups started anew. Again, an incoming call locked the device. I didn't even know it for 3 hours when I turned it on and the clock was over 3 hours behind and the screen wouldn't take any input beyond unlocking. Reboot and later I tried to speed dial and back into force close loop. Reboot...still does it. Tried to bring up my contacts and get a black screen, eventually leading to getting kicked back to the Home screen. Obviously, the contacts issue is related to the speed dial issue, which is probably related to the incoming call issue since they all are tied together. But what could be the problem? I am so frustrated I'm ready to hurl this thing at a wall. I uninstalled OCLF and am considering an Odin flash to stock. Seems like the phone is really flaky when it has a full of >90% charge. Any clues?
I would start with olcf. The lag fix it used its not recommended and may be causing data corruption
I have said it plenty of times before, and I will continue to preach....I recommend flashing back to stock and master clear to troubleshoot. That will give you assurance that you will start on a fresh clean slate, as far as bugs/data corruption/bad configurations. Obviously you will want to back up all of your data first. After you flash back and master clear, don't do anything else to it other than installing regular apps from the market to see how it runs. If it continues to act up, then you know you have hardware issues. If it fixes it, then you know you had something going on with your config or data corruption.
Whats your build number? If it is one of the 1007 builds then you may be able to get a warranty exchange for the reboots.
Getting noticeable improvement as far as Quadrant benchmarks go doesn't always = better
Here's the really odd thing, pulling the battery and rebooting seems to clear the issue for a few days. A plain reboot won't. I alternate between 2 batteries, both OEM. I've never cleared the battery stats. Could it be an issue with one or both batteries? It always seems to happen shortly after taking the phone off the charger.
If you haven't already, you can try recalibrating your battery. But the route I would take is flashing back to stock using odin one click. It doesn't take very long and it will rule out alot of things

Yup...I agree...and I would start with a 100% clean slate..and not use any data from any previous time..Flash a good kernel..a good modem..apply the gps fix of your choice..and enjoy..Trying to use parts of a stock rom..is self defeating...wither or not you get uber high benchmarks or not...You may want to stay with some type of stock build..but you IMHO your better off going with a I9000 rom/kernel/modem...Anything that is even close to stock AT&T is junk as far as I know.

As soon as I have a few hours to spend redoing all my data, apps and info, I think that's what I'll do. I already downloaded the 1-click Odin OEM ROM. After flashing Odin do I have to redo the JH7 OTA update?

What if there's something wrong with an app I installed that is causing the problem? Wouldn't reinstalling my apps with TB just bring that problem back?

It really doesn't even take a few hours to back up and restore. I have an 8gb external sd card full of music, photos and videos and over 200 apps stored internally and it takes me 10-15 mins if that using titanium backup pro for apps . You don't have to restore jh7 but it might be a good idea to do so if that's what your phone had out of the box.

Typically restoring normal apps you get from the market will not cause you grief. But what can cause you grief is backing up and restoring mods, system data, configuration data etc. The goal is to create a totally unhacked unmodded totally stock experience to isolate and possibly identify what could be causing problems

and OCLF.... dont forget that OCLF causes PAIN!
I need my phone tomorrow for work, so I'll settle for just uninstalling OCLF for now. Maybe Friday or Saturday I can sit down and "go back." I don't remember if the phone had JH7 or if I updated it OTA when I first got it, but that's what it has been running almost since day 1. Is there an Odin for JH7?
No there isn't but heres a thread on how to install it...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=790080&page=20
You will need to download jh7_ota.zip.
Basically, after you flash back to stock, you have to install clockworkmod recovery, place the zip file on your internal memory, boot into clockworkmod recovery and choose to install the zip file. I actually did this the other day to see if it actually works, because my phone came with jh7 out of the box.
PS...if you kept the box your phone came with, it will show near the barcodes if your phone came with JH7 or JF6
Box says JF6, so I must have upgraded it. Don't remember doing it, though. What's wrong with just using the Odin for JF6 and letting the phone do the OTA for JH7?
One click lag fix sucks.

Hi All,
I have a mt4g which is rooted with S=Off. I switch between the Sense launcher and Launcher Pro Plus. Usual apps on the phone, not too many.
For last week or so, I have been seeing that sometimes the phone gets really really laggy and Norton Util tells me that the CPU is 100%.
Also, I think most of the times, when this happens, I see a Sync icon up top. I do not sync a lot, just 2 GMail Inboxes and weather (every 6 hours). But I do see that Sync icon most of the times when this lagging happens.
I have tried removing apps, but this still seems to be a problem. I have see somewhere that turning the USB debugging to ON has helped many, but did not work for me.
I tried CM7 RC1 when it was out, but didnt like it (stock camera etc...) and I restored back to my stock ROM. Could this have done something?
Thanks
Ravneet
On your home screen hit menu key. Go to settings. Select accounts and sync. See what all is listed there. Chances are something with sense is constantly syncing.
Disable everything from syncing. See if the problem goes away. If so turn on one thing at a time until you find the culprit.
Hope that puts you in the right direction.

Have tried that. When I go there nothing is synching. Strange.
I have tried to remove all accounts from synch but still see the problem.
Went into recovery and wiped the cache about a hour ago. So far so good. Hope it stays this way.

I've noticed that there are apps that as soon as i download them, and open them that my cpu will go to 100% until I reboot my phone. System panel is a good app that isn't too obtrusive that will tell you exactly what app is doing what.
Have you installed anything new lately?
I uninstalled everything new.
Moreover I think every time this happens the battery is less than 30%. Maybe in low battery profile there are some apps which are over utilizing the CPU.

@NicGraner: Why would the stock ROM have problems with being rooted?
I am still having this problem. Uninstalled everything that is not important.
The phone just becomes unusable and I have to reboot. Un-installed Watchdog Lite too, as I thought since it is monitoring, it is taking up some CPU in background too.
No widgets on the home screens.
I guess I am gonna do a full refresh using the PDxxx.zip and go back to stock stock and then see what happens. not sure if I will lose my root once I do that.
Try the royal glacier rom it's solid stable and the sh!t
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/2/stop-t-mobile-from-being-bought-by-att/.......
I returned 5 phones for this exact problem, then I finally got one where the usb debugging trick actually worked. Before that I was just using OSmonitor from the market to see when I was hitting 100% then I would have to yank the battery as that was the only thing that would make it stop.
When I got this new phone I installed os monitor and waited for it to happen again, which it did, then I turned on usb debugging and watched my cpu usage graph drop to 0%. SUCCESS! Unfortunately since this was my 6th phone this solution seems to be the exception rather than the rule.
I did a lot of poking around on google trying to fix this and found a lot of people with different results. Try disabling t mobile sync and go to the myaccount app in the market and uninstall the updates. If that doesn't work try getting a new sim card and sd card, or just keep returning phones until t mobile offers to send you a g2x...
Also if you search around you'll see that this isn't just a problem with the mt4g. I found multiple threads where this happens on the nexus one, and several galaxy s phones. I really hope google is aware of this.

@johnsmith970: Thanks for the info. I will try calling TMO tonight and see what they say.
I am really bugged by this now. The phone gets totally unusable once this happens.
They will say to do a factory reset. Every tech support person I talked to told me to do that. This didn't solve the problem for me at all. It still exhibited the same symptoms on a fresh reset and not even signed in to google.
I would advise calling htc support just to let them know you are having this problem. Sending back a half a dozen phones per customer can't be good for anyones wallet or their peace of mind.

I have no idea why the stock rom doesn't like being rooted it's just what's been said and the solution which is most widely given (and mostly worked unless theres an underlying problem) is to flash a custom rom.
OK! I have more information for anyone interested.
I am tracking processes now in OS Monitor app from Market.
Most of the times it is the bluetooth daemon (bluetoothd) that goes bonkers. I was connected to my GPS in my car while driving, and when I came out of the car...the bluetoothd is going bonkers...looks like it may be trying to 'find' the device it was connected to. At the same time logcat2 process is also utilizing 30+% of the CPU.
I turned off Bluetooth and both the processes went away
So let me see if this sticks for couple of days.
Thanks

Install this stock rom:

My Motorola Triumph keeps randomly rebooting and the battery goes from 90% to 7% suddenly sometimes. I had the phone for a week so far and the frequence of restarts is increasing. I don't have any task killer app.
Is it some software that I am using or it's a hardware issue? Do you think I should have the phone replaced by Virgin Mobile?

Try charging it all the way and using cwm to wipe the battery stats. That should fix the battery drain. The reboots I would try wiping Dalvik, cache, and last first data if the first 2 wipes don't help at all.

I just figured out the problem has to do with wifi. When I turn it off and use 3G instead the mobile becomes stable (so far). Is anyone facing the same problem or it's just me? Is there a fix?
Does it have a custom ROM on it? I've seen around the forums that there has been issues with the MT and wifi on the ROMs

No. But the frequency of the reboots increased after I re-installed the original MT stock ROM.
When I first bough the device it restarted once or twice a day. Now it reboots non stop unless I take out the battery. I re-installed the stock ROM from another source but the problem persisted. The problem goes away when I turn off wifi abut comes back when I turn it on.
Sounds like something to do with the kernel, not the ROM... maybe. I had horrible luck with any and all custom kernels for a long while. Although that's just my luck, might not be yours...
Looks like you had a problem from the beginning... Try everything stock, and if it's still there, return it... Wow my first post in years...

switched to the iPhone 4s...
Same here...

Wohooooooooooooo The problem DOES go away with CM7 beta 8 !!!! It's like magic!
Phone no longer reboots randomly
Wifi is stable and does not disconnect or cause the phone to reboot or the battery to heat up
And battery life improved 300%!!! I now charge it every other day with moderate 3g/wifi usage!
I had CM7 for three weeks so far and my frustration turned into happiness! It's just amazing how changing the software makes a HUGE difference!! Before CM7 I always felt like smashing my MT because of the hard time it gave me!
I followed the instructions on: http://www.motorolatriumphhacks.com/

as far as ive seen with both cm7 and cm9, random reboots houldnt be an issue anymore, but for other still having the issue it usually comes from about 4 things over the rest
1. faulty hardware, which normally isnt the case, if faulty hardware was the issue you'd probly be seeing more then random reboots, but its still possible
2. Rom didn't take correctly during flash, either by chance, or because the phone wasent properly cleared and now settings are "head butting"
3. Running a custom rom in which you can adjust the cpu and the settings are either to low or to high, both can cause reboots
4. Most common one ive seen by far outta them all, Apps, certain apps especially after some updates will "play tricks" on the device and for some reason cause reboots sometimes, usually the next update of said app will resolve the issue but not always, so if you find an app thats the culprit you can notify that apps developer
you can always try and go back to 100% stock and see if the issue is still there but if your like me you probly hate the stock froyo by now lol
It may seem painful or whatnot but unless you find exactly what may be causing the reboots the best bet overall would be
Do a complete Fresh install of whatever rom you use, dont flash anything besides the rom and gapps if needed, also dont restore any backups yet, just to be sure
Once the fresh new rom is booted i turn the phone off then back on for safe measures lol
Now if you can lol try running the phone with No aftermarket apps besides any/if any that came on the rom, if the problem is gone you know for sure here that it was one of your apps
then 1 by 1 install your apps and give it some time in between app installs to see if the problem comes back and hopefully this way if it does youll know which app is causing troubles
FAQ
To quote directly from my FAQ,
"Reboots on Android are a pain, and can be attributed to multiple sources. I’ve been able to successfully reduce the amount of reboots that I get, but never eliminate them… Anyhow, here’s some troubleshooting information:
1. Format SD card in Windows (back up your SD card data first!) Make sure you format to FAT32. Don’t try formatting it in Linux. I have done this before and the phone wouldn’t boot up!
2. Slightly overclocking prevents some freezes.
Under Settings > Cyanogenmod Settings > Performance overclock the max speed to around 1300-1400ish. This should speed the phone up, but not to the point of the thing overheating
3. Fix SD Card permissions. Do this by booting into Recovery (You can do that if you have this ROM installed) and go to advanced > Fix SD card permissions. Now reboot.
4. Do not use Firefox, except the Nightly builds. Firefox has went through drastic speed and performance improvements recently, but the older builds, despite being called stable, are so slow, they will make the phone freeze and reboot. Yes, this includes Aurora. UPDATE: All Firefox versions except stable (ironic, eh?) have been used by me personally and have not made my phone reboot. Make sure you’re on at least version 14. (This one doesn't apply as much anymore, I need to update my FAQ!)
5. Give the phone a break from time to time. After intensive gaming for hours on end, the phone will often reboot while exiting a game.
That’s all the tips I have. I managed to drastically reduce my reboots by doing these, but not eliminate them completely. I hope g60madman or mantera find some hidden timeout value in the kernel (if one exists, like the auto reboot on BSOD in Windows) and either lengthens the timeout value or disables automatic rebooting so if this is a kernel panic, we may see the debugging details and upload them to fix some crashes.
6. Make sure that you have the VM heap size set to be adequate enough. I recommend at least 24 MB, preferably anywhere from 32 MB and up if you want the phone to last a while without rebooting.
7. Sometimes a cache wipe and dalvik cache wipe are needed to stop bootloops. Unfortunately, every once in a while, you may start getting bootloops. This usually due to some sort of corruption in the cache or dalvik cache. You can safely clear them through Clockworkmod Recovery without loosing any data, and this usually fixes the problem. If not, do a factory reset through Clockworkmod Recovery and reinstall this ROM."
Hey Everyone,
Hopefully you have time and can answer this for me. About a month ago I downloaded the very first alpha rom of CM10 for the S3. Installation went fine and all but GPS was totally screwed up. Well a few roms later and updates to Google Maps its still not locking on to my position, even with WiFi on like someone suggested but wasn't needed before I began flashing so many roms lol. I've been using GPS toolbox and GPS status to get locks but it doesn't hold. It will stay locked then lose it a minute later where as when I didn't mess with roms and was on stock it would be fine and be able to see my phone from anywhere. Right now I'm looking at it as I type and it says GPS on in green on one of the apps and 8 in view and 7 in use but its still blinking constantly and the accuracy is at 500 feet sometimes more which is totally unacceptable. Used to be within 40 ft or less than that before something totally screwed with my GPS. I'm really desperate now Max because I use my GPS to get around town as I have a horrible memory but don't want to take it back to Verizon to get a new one and shell out more money. I've tried a lot of steps up to and including going back to complete stock on the phone to know avail, its still screwed. I've cleared the A-GPS cache and re downloaded it from these apps but its still not 100% perfect where I need it. Would you happen to know what to do to get this thing in working order so I can use it again and not have it lose lock while I'm on the road like its been doing? Maybe if you have an unaltered gps.conf file you could copy the stuff in that file for me and paste it on an email so I can recreate my own and see if it helps. Its under the system/etc/gps.conf if you need to know where it is. I really need help and you guys are the only people that actually knows these phones inside and out that could possibly help me on this. Like I've said, I've tried everything I can think of, using GPS tools on the market, going back to stock, jumping from 3 different roms and even deleting the Google maps and re downloading it and nothing helps, but hopefully you can. Thank you for taking the time to read this long email as I tried to give as much detail to my problem as needed to help you help me.

My GPS is fried
I have done alot of troubleshooting and I believe I screwed up my phone. I went from Synergy to CM10 and then to cleanrom. While on cleanrom I noticed my GPS wouldnt lock. So I flashed Synergy (Fully Wiping Of Course) and still no GPS. So I odined to stock and relocked bootloader. Still no luck. I ran GPS fix GPS Status GPS AIDS and GPS test and I am still screwed. My GPS still wont lock. It always says searching for GPS. I left the Navi on last night all night with a destination set hoping it would lock and say the magical words I want to here like "turn left" but instead I woke up to searching... been wiping data and cache 3 times daily tryna get this fixed.
I had gps issues no matter what rom or type of wipe i did. I notice it started after the synergy release where the gps settings were modified and no matter what it never worked again.I reverted the phone completely back to stock and the same thing. I called Verizon and they sent me a new phone, no issues anymore.

I really don't want to have to send it back for another one, is there any other numbers I can do on the dialer to do something else?

I have the same problem. I was running Synergy at the time I noticed it. It's really difficult to get Maps to lock, and seems to only work after GPS Test or GPS Status first get a lock (which each take up to 30 seconds typically).
I went COMPLETE stock to try fix it; total wipe, locked bootloader, no root, pure vanilla. Still couldn't get lock with Maps.
I'm trying a custom gps config file now to see if that helps.
Really wish someone would figure out what caused this and how to fix/revert it.
The original galaxy s had the worst GPS ever (or later version would initially work but get worse over time), but a dev (jt1334) for the samsung fascinate fixed it after 8 months by changing something in the kernel.
Hopefully some devs familiar with his work could look at what he did and see if there is something similar that could be done on the gs3
I've never had any major problems with my Infuse since I got it.
The battery is getting weaker but I bought a 2600Mah USB Backup Battery and that gives me another 7-8 hours for about 13-14 hours of use.
To make a long story short, I unlocked for use in Mexico City on TelCel and had some issues, so I returned the phone back to stock, unrooted.
Since that point however, while it would occasionally freeze before, its become a daily thing now and really bothersome because I can't even stop audio from playing via bluetooth. The touch screen becomes unresponsive and only a soft reboot or a hard reboot (removing the battery) returns the phone to a useful state.
It seems I have to do is every couple of hours now though, so I am posting here to get some suggestion on how to fix it.
Its been two years already since I got it so I am eligible for a new phone, but this one continues to work well besides this issue.
Thanks

1. your microSD may be going bad
2. if you haven't done so, back up all your stuff and try a factory reset...this may erase all existing info and bring the phone back to day#1

I mentioned that in the post, I did it while in Mexico City. It worked fine until this week, late last week. The battery only gives me about 5 hours now with just 32% audio playback and about 10% web access.
I guess I'll order a Anker battery from Amazon.
I rooted the phone again last night but before I did that, the phone became unresponsive three times in an hour. Which microSD card are you talking about? I just bought a 32GB Class 6 card and that works fine, I play all my audio from it, no problems.
If you mean the internal microSD card, that could be possible. I assume I can crack open the phone and replace this easily?
I should mention it never does that while plugged into a power source, so maybe this is all battery related.
Possible Fix...
When I had to hard reboot the phone again this afternoon, a little forced closed window came up for TwLauncher.
After rebooting the phone I looking at Titanium Backup and cleared the cashe from TwLauncher and that seems to have solved the problem.
Somebody on here mentioned that after installing a ROM they had the same problem, was worth a try.
I will report back if the issue returns.

My personal beliefs are that TB is good for causing a lot of problems.I used to use it,even bought pro,but even not restoring data when restoring apps I seamed to develop odd quirks or problems on about any ROM. Since not using it have much fewer problems.I am sure many people love it and think it's great, just thought I would give my $0.02
if your battery holds a charge...that is, it's letting you run the phone for more than several hours, it's unlikely to be the battery.
lags are usually due to apps misbehaving, media scan, wakelocks and wifi bugs...there are some others.
a factory reset ...complete reset..complete stock..will let you know if you have hardware of software issues.

Thus far, that issue has not returned. Yes the battery holds a charge, but last only about 5-6 hours now, not 7-8 hours.
It seems it was a minor software issue. I did a factory reset, you keep missing that.
I did it in Mexico City (7 days ago).... Since that point and returning to the US, I have put my apps back on the phone. I had already updated to Gingerbread and it just reset to that.
I won't know more until I am out and about with my phone. I will be watching various auto racing events and don't plan on leaving the house this weekend.

No problem, I've never had a problem with TB. I updated the rom to a rooted version of the AT&T Gingerbread release so I could even use it... lol
The phone was rooted for Froyo, I downloaded the AT&T Gingerbread from Samsung via Kies when it was released and it remained rooted.
But resetting it back to stock, TB didn't work until I put the rooted rom on the phone.

After you did the factory reset how did you put your apps back?

Exactly...you had to use TB or another restore. If you used TB on froyo and restored on GB or vice versa, you may run into issues.
and ...sigh... I did not miss the fact that you stated that you had reset the phone. I just had doubts that you understood what I was trying to say...from inside the phone..under settings/privacy..there is a reset option. make sure everything you wanted is already backed up. reset it..then put it into download mode and use one of the odin or heimdall package and flash it back to complete stock...run it stock and dont back up anything. download only apps from the play store or side load the apps if you had the apk's.
check the battery use to see if you have wake locks or android OS or android system eating up for battery..then you will know

Well like this, I will not go into the details but somebody else put Swipe Lock on the phone and of course I didn't know what he put into the phone. I was trying to resolve data issue on TelCel.
I had to do a hard reset outside of the operating system. Since the ROM was already upgraded to Gingerbread but unrooted, it went back to its unrooted state meaning I couldn't use TB.
So I re-downloaded apps from my memory. All of them are free so it wasn't an issue, just time consuming.

See above.
I used download mode to get out of Swipe Lock. I never used Swipe Lock, a-hole wanted to charge me 120 pesos ($7) to wipe it and put it back to stock, I wasn't going to do it, I know enough about Android phones to do it myself.
Oh well, lesson learned, I believe wiping the cashe from TwLauncher has solved the problem.
I did re-install all the apps from the store. I wasn't able to use TB until Thurs night (5/16). I noticed the errors Friday afternoon, wipe the cashe and no issues since.
