Tip to extend the battery - Samsung Infuse 4G

Many of you may already be aware of this but thought I would post this for those that are not. The biggest drain on the battery is the display and screen brightness. Since many use their phones indoors, you can pretty much lower the brightness to near 0 by turning auto brightness off.
There is a feature on the phone where you can manually control the brightness by holding your finger in the center of the notification bar at the top for a second, then swipe your finger left and right across the notification bar to adjust the brightness up/down when needed, like when you are are outside. I find this manual control easy to use and significantly helps extend the battery. Note that this will only work with auto brightness turned off.
EDIT: I just learned something new with this trick. If you tap and hold the left most part of the notification bar, the brightness will change to the lowest setting. If you do the same on the right most side, the brightness will change to the highest setting. So no need to do the slide finger thing if you tap and hold the right spot.

Thanks for the tip

True but it is nice to have control without having to go to a home screen where the widget is.

Best widget I found for this is Brightness Level. Free on market.

Nobody is asking for the best brightness widget. This was a tip on the little trick some of us didn't know about

Now I can remove that screen brightness app.
Is this android specific or just the Infuse? Just wondering.

Damn that is cool!

Hmmm. Didn't work for me. I touched middle of notification bar, waited for a pop-up, didn't get one. Then tried swiping without a pop-up, didn't work either.
I'm running GO Launcher EX - not sure if that has anything to do with it...

There is no pop-up. You just slide your finger left and right across the notification bar and the brightness should change. Make sure auto-brightness is turned off or it will not work.

Capacitive Touch Keys - whose the Idiot at Samsung who designed them?

Whatever engineer designed the timing of the lights on the capacitive touch keys on the Infuse ought to be fired twice. Once for the design and once for not having an option for an adjustable or always on setting when the screen is on.
There must be a way to make the <OPTION/HOME/PREV/SEARCH> bar to stay lit up. It is driving me absolutely nuts. It goes out in like 2 seconds after I have touched it. No idea why they did that. Stupid stupid stupid stupid design. 9 out of 10 times I hit the wrong key while in an app. It is so annoying.
I am really surprised no DEV has built a longer time option or even an always on option for those keys into a ROM. It's dumb design like that that makes me almost miss my iPhone.
From reading & searching it seems this doesn't bother too many people. I just can't understand why not.
I have tried "KEEP THE LIGHTS ON" app but it is pretty much useless on the Infuse.
there is an app called "keep the lights on" i havent tried it on the infuse but it works on some of the sgs phones.
edit: sorry didnt read the last line of the first post,
its not that hard to memorize 4 buttons, and if you touch the screen, the buttons or the volume rocker they come on.
Just tap the screen and they come back on.

As my OP says: "I have tried "KEEP THE LIGHTS ON" app but it is pretty much useless on the Infuse."
Memorizing them isn't the problem, it's hitting the wrong spot. For some people, with specific physical disabilities, it's not that easy.
Just a simple OPTION would resolve the issue. Still a stupid design. If the screen is lit why shouldn't those keys be lit. The amount of power that backlight draws is probably negligible.

Not always depending on what is happening on the screen and sometimes tapping the screen causes problems with the app that is running.

Unfortunately for some people there are things that prevent some of the simple things in life that others take for granted from being simple tasks.
They aren't that hard to see with the lights off...My phone is about 5 feet away from me and I can still see the home keys just fine.

it is timing, not sure if iti is in services.jar or framework or the kernel. nobody has ever seemed interested in addressing this outside of the keep the lights on app, not sure why.

I hear you. This is one of the few things I don't like about this device. Most of the time it's not an issue, but in low light or darkness it's a bit of a pain trying to locate the right button to press.
"Keep The Lights On" app works fine for me
I just installed the "Keep the Lights On" app, and it works flawlessly. The bottom menu buttons stay on as long as the screen stays on.
Question: When you installed the app, did you add it as a widget, and then enable it? You need root access for this app to work.
I am using Infused 1.5.3, so, not sure if that makes a difference or not.
Edit: Just an FYI, I am using the free version. I would use the pro version, but I'll probably just end up uninstalling this app .

Yes, I installed it as a widget and I do have root access. I am also running Infused 1.53. What kernel are you running? Maybe that is the difference?
It did work for the first few minutes I had it installed than eventually it started getting weird. Sometimes it would work in reverse, most of the time it wouldn't work at all, sometimes it would never shut off (which was OK with me). I contacted the DEV and he said it wasn't compatible with the Infuse and that would be the behavior he would expect.
I think if you use it for a while you'll see what I mean.
Edit: Just uninstalled/reinstalled. First time phone wakes up it works. Once it "sleeps" then wakes up lights NEVER come back on. If I turn widget off/on the same thing recycles. Works once than fails.
I've got to agree with the OP. Since we don't have a nice physical home button, it would be nice to get this thing lit up so we can see. I'm always in a dark environment and I keep hitting the 'back' instead of the 'home' key.
While we're at it, I like to know who the genius is that decided the location of the power button. It's almost impossible to push the button without squeezing the volume buttons. If they come out with a Infuse2 with the power button on the top, I'll switch in a second.

These sorts of issues (both the OP and the power button placement) are easily avoided if you actually go to a store and play with a phone instead of ordering online.
While I do agree that those two issues could have been handled better, I also understand that we're never going to get a perfect phone. So you live with what you like best.

[app] ScreenOff

Hi guys, if you think how the power button will break sometime because it feels so fragile, maybe you want to use this app. I made this app for personal use, but I do want to share with you.
This app basically only make the screen brightness to 0 (zero), and you gotta wait for 10 seconds to let Android call the lock screen.
nb:
if you didn't wait till time out (10 secs), you are still basically locking it manually. that means you have to press the hardware button twice to wake the screen up

You should try an app called LUX. It will allow you to drop the brightness below the standard brightness.

Lux is a pay app and reading description in market says nothing about dimming below stock settings.
Screen adjust otoh actually can lower brightness to zero can also modify color and contrast too. Best of all it's free. Been looking forever for something like this that works in honeycomb as lowest stock brightness is still too bright for nighttime reading for me.

Try it again, I just noticed this last night with Serendipity 7 - Sliding all the way to the right on the slider sometimes takes the brightness only to 50%, sliding it down and back sometimes takes it to 100%.
Seems to be a generic Gingerbread glitch.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but you can adjust the brightness from the notifications bar?
Yes. If you hold your finger over the status bar but don't pull down to bring the notifications, you can slide your finger to the left to reduce brightness or to the right to increase it. It's definitely a bit finicky, but quite convenient for a quick brightness adjustment.
Oh wow, never knew that. Was that implemented on the stock ROM too? That makes it sooo much easier. I actually ran into this thread searching for a good screen dimmer widget so i can make adjustments from my home screen. This is even better haha. Thanks.

Screen Issues

The colors on the screen are gorgeous and bright, but black text on a white or gray background is actually pretty dim, much dimmer than even my Inspire. Is this just a limitation of the ameoled screen, or do I have a bad phone? Is there any fix if it's typical? Pretty much a deal breaker for me if I can't fix this... Thanks for any help!
Black text on a white background is as plain as night and day for me. Id say check out the store demo to compare. If the demo is better than yours, swap out.

Good call, I'll do that. Out of curiousity, what was your last phone, and have you compared black on white with it? Thanks!
There is a setting under display that says 'anaylize images and adjust screen brightness' to save battery. This is checked by default and was not on the og s2. This is also separate from the auto adjust brightness to ambient light. I found that when i unclicked this, all my screen concerns went away.

Burn in problem

I know the mod is probably going to lock this thread, but I just wanna tell you that today I went a local AT&T store and took a good look at their Galaxy notes there...they all got obvious burn in on the screen.. they were all the same, the charging symbol. I guess they left them at full brightness for too long..I guess what I'm trying to say here is that no amoled is better than the other and we don't need to turn to Notes when their screens just have higher resolution but still suffer from the same problem.

It's called being careful with your phone....
Burn in usually occurs from leaving a still image on a screen for a very long time. So unless a user were to leave the screen on constantly, and leave the phone still for a long time repeatedly, there shouldn't be a worry for burn in. I've always used full brightness on every smartphone I've had and none of them have had any sign of it.

It took me 8 months of use to get clear burn-ins to my Galaxy Nexus.
If I hold my nexus landscape, on the other end theres a bluis dark shade exactly the area where my status bar is on portrait.
On the other end there are the three soft navbar buttons, clearly visible and burnt in to my screen. The status bar is way worse though.
I almost always keep auto-brightness, guess I'll start having more from now on to avoid further damage...

Keep in mind that the display phones are on from open to close. Also that's even if they turn them off after closing. So I wouldn't be surprised if the screen has burned in.
Leave your TV on for 12 hours straight 7 days a week and I'm sure it will start to burn in.
