Sweet Deal on BestBuy NS4G - looking for feedback - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Jumping from Verizon Droid Incredible for free because I'm in a dead zone.
Had seen a deal for a Samsung Galaxy S 4G on Tmobile for free, but it's sold out.
Other deal is Nexus S 4G on Sprint for 50 bucks.
Looking for honest feedback. Pros and Cons. Camera, battery life, video chat, etc etc...
Thanks

Well battery life is typical 10-12 hours average use on the stock rom/kernel.(custom rom and kernel can improve this.)
The camera is decent but IMO a phone camera can only be so good to start with.
Its a "shiny" finish akin to most galaxy s devices so it will be prone to fingerprints and scratches. But the build quality is solid for a "plastic" phone.
There's debate about the radio. I live in metro DC and have experienced no issues with data or dropped calls.
Its a Nexus device so it will see updates first as long as the hardware can handle it.
The gpu and ddr3 mobile ram plus the 1ghz single core processor (while not the latest and not dual core) provide a good user experience. Smartbench and quadrant scores comparable to some dual core devices.
I've had it for a few weeks and am relatively satisfied.

let me tell u this, IMO the nexus s is THE BEST single core android phone out there. I had just returned mine bc I have an SGSII coming in the mail and will jump back to ATT. Even though the SGSII's specs are higher, I chose to leave the ns4g for non-phone related reasons.
basically this: i love the ns' form; light, perfect size, comfortable and sexy curves, awesome craftsmanship/quality. And for those complaining about "future-proofing", look at how long the nexus one has stayed relevant. the same thing has and is going on with the ns. this is google's baby, and pretty much the default developer's phone in the android community. it's not the most popular phone bc it doesnt have carrier/manufacturer bloatware, which is what the general mass wants. but the support and community around it is second to none.
you really need to play with it. its smooth as butter. i had opensoju+netarchy's cfs kernel and no hiccups or lags. its soooo damn easy to root and flash too if thats your thing.
if youre not looking for flashy big screens and dual cores and some of those unnecessary hardware out there, and want smooth android functionality, this phone is for you.
honestly, i wish i could hang onto this phone even though i'll be using an SGSII on ATT, but money wont permit it.

Thanks.
How about Video chat ? Is this OK on the NS ? I'd like to get more involved in this as my wife has an iphone 4 which is underused (surprise) and I'd like to video chat my wife and daughter.

Tango works fine and should work with the iPhone as well. Obviously if you aren't on wifi it will be connection dependent, but if you have 4G or wifi available it should work well.

yes, video chat on this phone is as good as any other android or iphone. tango is a good app for android-iphone vid chat. like krohnjw said, it uses a lot of data, so u need good connection. on all my vid chat capable phones, i rarely ever use this feature bc technology just isnt refined yet in that department. also keep in mind that the 2.3.4 version that comes on the nexus allows for vid chat via google talk...food for thought.

SGS4 or Nexus S

Im so confused on which one to get. I mean the SGS2 is a vibrant with 4g pretty much? And i dont know if the nexus s has 4g capability? I can get the sgs4 for 139. and the nexus s off best buy for 99. Really want to based this on development. So any info i would appericate it
nexus is best your choice .
Can you give me a more detailed answer as in why? I mean i like the sgs4 cause i always liked the vibrant. But the nexus s does have development. The only thing that scares me is the Internal 16gb which will lead into corrupting if a bad flash is done!
I recently had to make the same decision and had friends with both I borrowed for a week.
The nexus s is amazingly fast. It boots and shuts down in a fraction of the time. It has flash for the camera. It has gps that actually works right out of the box. It has a cooler design and a much more solid feel. It has the nfc that you will probably never use. It has premium support and google ota updates of the newest stuffs. The usb port also has a much nicer feel.
Video playback is poor compared to the vibrant.
It lacks support for most 3d games.
There is no sd card slot
No gorilla glass
I have owned several vibrants and everything that is true for them is true for the sgs4g. The screen is amazing and is protected by gorilla glass. Video playback is second to none. Games play like a dream.
Gps is essentially unusable on most handsets.
The case is cheap feeling and looking.
No flash for camera
I decided video playback and game support was more important than flash and gps but I am upset those are the best choices. You might be wise to just wait for the price to drop on the x2.
Texted While Driving
Im coming from sprint. I had both evo and epic. The evo had great devs, while the epic has little to no support at all. CM7 and MIUI are still in alpha stages. I just dont want the sgs4 to be like the epic. I was looking at the lg gxs or whatever their having alot of issues on the first batch released(bleeding screen, phone wont connect to 3g) Mt4g(feels cheap though) sgs4 or nexus are the only ones i would consider getting.
If I could go back in time I would choose the mt4g rooted with cm7, sgs4g has its benefits like said earlier except I don't use it for movies or gaming I bounce between apps often and fast and the sgs4g would sometimes lag.
So I bought the g2x and while it is wicked fast and extremely strong with already great support for development, the phone has its issues and chooses when the issues will come up, I would just go scan the general thread for the g2x real quick

It seems to me, the SGS4G is slow to get developer support for ROMS and such. That is the only reason I regret owning one. However, after rooting and applying the FOTA fix, it is a cool phone.
From my understanding, phones like the Nexus will have tons of ROMS and customization because they are not tainted by integrations such as Samsung's Touch Wiz and are easier to work with.

Sgs4g I like the video playback but thats just my opinion. Gps is pretty good for me and it is true no dev support on the sgs4g I mean not as much as other phonea so of you are looking to play around with the phone like changing roms and kernels stuff like that I wouldnt recommend unless you dont mind waiting which is my case I dont mind waiting so I dont have any complaints. One last thing it does lag here and there but is not that bad. Really cant say much about nexus s I havent even play with it. G2x was mentioned it is a beast pgone but I went to the g2x forums and there were a los of complaints with the screen you ahould go check it out. Best thing to do is just go to the forums of each device and read about it, comments and complaints and it would help a lot.

I think the sgs4g is the best device I've owned but thats after doing some system tweaks like getting root, freezing some apps, alter minfree to strict settings for better ram handling when swapping applications, changing the disk scheduler to deadline, doing the fota files fix and getting a class 6 micro sd card. After all that this phone has never lag or failed period. But out the box...is fast. Once u have used it for about a week or two thats when you could start seing lag by either apps you have downloaded and new services running in the background not counting the unnecesary ones that were already running when you first get it...gps works flawlesly and so does everything else, but thats after you hack the phone the way you want it...
Up to you though...
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
The only reason the Nexus s is any faster is because it came stock with the ext4 file system. Our phones have the same file system as the Vibrant (rfs) It is not efficient, and that is where our lag is coming from.
We will start seeing some ROMS that will have ext4 built into them. When we do get this we will see quad scores around 1700-1800. To give you an idea our phones stock will score around 900. EXT4 ruffly doubles the speeds of the system. Now if you add ext4 with an overclocked kernel. The scores will be around if not higher than 2000.
This phone will be very fast and stable in not to long.
Thanks guys for the help. I went to go play with the following phones today:
g2x- Front looks really nice, and the display showed sharped for lcd. BUT my epic seems faster? and the back of the phone is FUGLY I mean the color, color........color lol! Reminds me of those cheap boost mobile off the wall colors. A case may solve that problem but i wouldnt pay 200 for it knowing how the back looked to me.
g2- Fast little thing, seen the potiental of it on xda, pretty much a better looking sprint htc evo shift 4G. BUT the demo hinge was BARELY on the phone. Soo going have to pass on that looks like a future problem.
mt4g- The best one of the group. Fast, comfortable in hand, light and Fast and xda support helps it there in my book. BUT its looks cheap. I mean how the color contrast clash on the phone. If i got one had to be either be the red one or white one.
sgs4- Some idiot STOLE THE DEMO! soooo i gotta go back tomorrow to look at it!!!
Nexus s- Actually locally a guy was selling one on CL. So i meet him to look at it. the screen is awesome of course cause of the superman screen lol! BUT the phone Looks cheaper than the mt4g!!!! I mean its all plastic and black gloss. Drop it and your gonna be hurting really bad. Also you have to deal with best buy and google since they sell it and tmobile just provides the service. I may sound anal but im a complex thinker and i always think ahead of myself.
Whole day of researching and im still confused and dont know which one to get lol!!!!

I'm a proud owner of a G2x... though some screens have bleeding issues.... mine doesn't... There are plenty of G2x's that are doing just fine, it's just easier to complain.... If you do have issues, you will have a 1 year warranty which means you will be able to switch it when new batches come out and by then issues should have been fixed... Whatever you do BUY THE PHONE IN STORE to test the device... Play with the settings and everything! If you are going to get a phone GET THE BEST there is to offer you and right now that would be the G2x...
SGS4G and Nexus S both have their flaws and are similar devices... The Nexus S isn't 4g capable (if that matters to you)... the SGS4G isn't anything to dazzle over and the Touch Wiz UI isn't my favorite... If you can wait a little longer it may be worth looking at the HTC Sensation...
No offense but i dont see why people rave so much about the sensation. Its a dual core evo 4g. Had two evo 4g when i was with sprint.......Nothing special. Sure it will probably have a bunch of dev support. But to me its not something wanting on for.
But after reading more reviews and seeing on the g2x side. Its not seeming so bad now. Also you have to consider that im coming to tmobile so late while the g2 mt4g and nexus s are kinda old i guess you can say. Even though the g2 and mt4g will get 2.3 but i think thats about it for them as OTA updates.
the Nexus S 4G...on TMO...would be......oh wait...why am I dreaming again
Get teh Samsung Galaxy S4G if you're planning to get a data plan and actually use it
SGS4
Very low internal space, 200MB as apposed to the Vibrants 16G. The phone benchmarks pretty low. But it does have the fastest antenna at 21mbs.
Nexus S
Wow it has a curved screen..... but no SD card support???? Why? Pretty cool but the download speeds will be lower because no 4g support.
If you're looking for the best I suggest the G2x or G2. I personaly use the G2 and it is amazing. But tmo just launched the G2x and it is to die for. Amazing 8MP camera, dual core processor, hdmi out for hdtv support. Get that if anything, the two phones you're deciding between have already been out dated by the G2x.
Sent from my Vision using XDA App
Wait til the Sensation or even better the SGS 2....but wait something will come out better right after...mytouch 4g slide anyone...??
It sounds like the price is a concern of the op.... I say go for the nexus s... the network speed increase with the sgs4g is not enough to overcome the lack of developer support. And its cheaper. Then again... the g2x is your best choice ATM... if you have the $$$.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
I had the SGS4G and exchanged it for the G2x and I have no regrets. This phone is amazingly fast and responsive and dev support is already awesome. Within 2 or 3 days the phone had clockworkmod working through ROM manager.
Pretty amazing. Plus Cyanogen, Team Whiskey and others already got the phone and are working on the ROM.
If you still have a choice I say go with the G2x. Dual core is future proof. Just came out, so this phone will probably be good for the next 2 years.
Hope that helps with your decision

[Q] Knowing what you do now about the ns, if you could do it all over again would you

Like the title says, with all you've learned so far about the ns and it's quirks, would you buy it again if you didn't have one anymore. Make up any reason for your current phone disappearing. Let's say you can afford getting another phone, would you buy another ns?
This is someone that is trying to pick your collective brains before the big day for us few sprint customers, which is in a week and a half or so.
Please share your opinions
Thanks
I would most likely get the nexus s again. Although dual core devices are coming out, based on consumer reviews, it seems like the OS's are not quite efficient for dual core yet. I currently have my nexus @ 1.3Ghz and I really can't imagine needing a phone any faster than this, other than for intense gaming. Browsing renders very quickly. I would probably only contemplate on getting a cheaper device than the nexus s that has more development going on (if I "lost" it), but with Sprint nexus users jumping on board, things are bound to change very quickly in the development section.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
No I wouldn't get another. I'd invest in a galaxy s 2 unfortunately the international version doesn't support T-Mobile 3g bands so I have to wait till it hits tmoble.
But if you're wondering if ns is with it...yes it's a very good phone

I have to say, I LOVE IT! I think its fantastic, havent seen any other phone hit 5000 in quadrant, i know quadrant isnt reflecting user smoothenes and so but still its one tweakable sucker.
Had mine since the day it was released and there's still no other phone I'd rather have. Yeah it has its quirks here and there, but what phone doesn't. I would definitely buy one again!
No, I have fun putting these mods, trying something new... that's why I am getting a G1, it may be have been used but I am definitely going to put all the quirks, CM6, overclocking, themes, custom kernels, and I might even try some sense ports, I really like doing something NEW, if I do the same again (oh boy trust me, I did it... TWICE cause I was too bull headed to make a NANDROID backup on CWR) it's going to be a chore.
Now if you gave me enough money and asked me for my next MAIN device? Samsung Galaxy S2 all the way, the best specs, the best software, the best everything and you cannot beat the display. Hell let's just put it this way:
My Motorola Xoom:
Tegra 2 @1ghz
10.1inch screen
1gig of RAM
5mp rear camera with dual LED flash capable of 720p recording
2mp front facing camera
Samsung Galaxy S2:
Tegra 2/Exynos @ 1.2gz
4.3inch screen
1gig of RAM
8mp rear camera with single LED flash capable of 1080p recording
2mp front facing camera
Basically a tablet in your pocket! Though if you are looking for the best modding experience, Nexus S even in 4 months, Nexus S will remain the most plain vanilla device, perfect for fooling around with.
Would I do it all over again? Yes, I would and I am. I own an NS for tmo and when its out for sprint I'll be getting it again
There is not a single phone being sold today that I would rather haalve than the Nexus S. So.... yes!

[Q] Time to Upgrade: Need Information on Various Phones, and respective problems

As it comes time to upgrade once again, I find myself confronted my many options. The phones I am looking at are the Infuse 4g, Inspire 4g, Atrix 4g, Focus and iPhone 4. I am very partial to the Android devices and was hoping to end up with one. I currently have an iPhone 3g but want to trade up due to performance and battery life issues.
I would greatly appreciate some discussion and information on these various devices and the problems and plus's of each. I like the Atrix due to its power, battery and potential if the bootloader is ever unlocked. The Inspire is interesting due to the wide amount of development but I have sever concerns about the power in comeing years, battery life, despite ROM's and the speaker. I like the Infuse's screen, power, and, due to unlocked bootloader, development potential.
I have had Samsung "dumb" phones in the past, the SMS flawed Impression and the sub-par Solstice, so i have some concerns about Samsung phones. I like HTC but dislike them putting tiny batteries in their high end phones. Motorola is generally OK but I understand support is a bit lacking. iPhone is super reliable but I believe the OS is stale and boring. Also, i worry about the 4's future with the advent of the iPhone 5 in the coming months and, like I said, I like Androids.
Lets get some discussion going!
This is posted in the General's of all 3 phones. Excluding the Focus.
Hi there! i have had my Inspire for 2 and a half months. The first thing I must say is, I am unsure of how battery life was on the Iphone, but battery on the Inspire could be better. As any smartphone, the screen consumes A LOT of power. Only twice, however, has my battery not lasted me through the day. On average, I consumed 5% battery per hour on moderate use (25-30 texts per hour, fiddling with a few widgets, looking at stocks, etc) when unrooted on the stock ROM. On heavy usage (screen on especially if playing games, etc), expect to consume at least twice that. I have later rooted and upgraded to the Inspired Ace ROM and done a few battery calibrations and my battery has seemed to sustain much better.
Battery aside, this phone ROCKS! First impressions may be lacking as the battery cover was very difficult to remove on mine, even left scratches where a screwdriver was needed to pry it. The case covers that up though. The phone seems to be very fast and powerful. I have never had any major problems with this phone. It is by far the best phone I have every had. The only problems I have had were when this phone was stock and unrooted. I have more apps than any one person needs (>100) and the built in Froyo application manager does not seem to handle this number well. You have to exit the Manage Applications app then go back to it to load them all sometimes. This problem was fixed with the installation of a Gingerbread ROM, however.
Root was painless with bubby's simple root. (I was almost disappointed at the small amount of user input required! )
The HTC Sense ui makes the phone very user friendly, as it includes many custom widgets for things like mail, stocks, news, and other things. The SRS Enhancement included with Sense ROMs makes music sound amazing.
I have included the high parts here. If there are any more questions you have, please ask. I will be happy to answer any questions you have, as I would HIGHLY recommend this device.
hey will! im thinking about getting a inspire, but a user at the store todl me the phone freezes alot. is that true for all inspires or probably happened to him because he bough a faulty or defected device?

thank you! and also, i saw the inspire in the store, and the picture and just the quality of the screen and colors was BEAUTIFUL, i thought it was the exact if not better than the iphones visual quality. But i saw somewehre that the iphones resolution is better? how!!!
It has to do with the inspire being superlcd whilest the iPhone has a retina display which in essence is a very high res lcd to the best of my understandings. Keep in mind, however that the inspire's screen is much larger. (take that, Mr. Jobs!) As for the freezes, the guy at the ATT store must be a fan of another phone he is trying to push (blackberry perhaps? Sure...) Or has a total lemon. Mine has never truly frozen. The app manager lagging due to so many apps in froyo and one time out of a thousand in a text message the keyboard would not type when unlocking the phone straight to messaging were the only "freezes" I found and like I said, hitting back and re entering solved instantly.

The iPhone is somewhat nice...But considering it is Apple I must hate it naturally, retina is wonderful, but side by side with an inspire I do not see much of a difference.
Also the 3.5 inch screen is such a huge turn off for me...having a nice 4.3 inch screen to type messages and play games on beats the iphone right there...
(I just noticed im going against the iPhone alot)...Lets attack the Focus! I also considered this phone, I enjoy windows and all, but a mobile OS that is still new to the game didnt interest me much...4 inch screen was okay, I found it a little too small for my taste and I know most of you are saying "whoah .3 inches! Huge deal!" it actually is a really big difference, have you ever compared an inspire side-by-side with a focus? Plus its Samsung, every samsung takes forever to charge, and they are not the highest of quality.
The atrix is a nice competitor, but yet not one at the same time. Cool it has a dual core, so what? My inspire blows it out of the water overclocked at 1900Ghz(of course not constantly running). I can run my inspire at 500Mhz and it is still extremely fast and it surprised me. Also as many know the locked bootloader on the Atrix is also a big turn-off, not custom kernels and plus no ability to remove motoblur? jeez just the fact it runs motoblur makes me cringe, and also the fact that it is made by motorola.
Now moving onto the infuse, finally. This is the best competitor to the Inspire, although I had a choice of getting it I purchased the Inspire, here is why. A 4.5 inch screen was just to large for my hand, I would rather be using an actual tablet than using a half phone half tablet. Also the fact that it is Samsung also scares me, not the best quality device. Touchwiz is not my thing either! Although once rooted that all can change, I still dont like how it is the native OS. If you are really banking on buying an Infuse, you should really just wait for the Galaxy S2 to come to the US, that phone will be a beast. If you read this whole post then kudos to you, I apologize ahead of time for all of the grammatical mistakes and comma splices, but you cant blame me, just got out of school, time for summer .
Yeah I have not used and Samsung Android phones, but my last phone (well last 3 due to warranty replacements) was a Samsung Jack. Between WinMo and Samsung, I'm definitely a lifetime customer of any of its competitors. Plus HTCs recent decision to stop locking bootloaders will be nice for future phones if you are going to mod. My last Samsung was more like samsuck. Just saying.

thank you both!! To me, HTC Sense is so well made that all the other operating systems? lol or whatever they are called in my opinion are just a more flexible edition of the IOS. I mean really, i look at the atrix, its widgets are boxes liek the iphone, it scrolls liek the iphone, and i find, well, i dont know if its the infuse or the atrix but the screen of one of them, may be both, is liek darkened? Its display isnt bright but its almost liek a gloomy type of brightness that the phone has. Im surprised no one else has commented or complained about it. But yea, i really want the Inspire, but ppl keep saying wait for a dual processor, but im only goign to get a dual processor phone that has HTC Sense the best in the business!
Not sure about the infuse, but I am pretty sure they do make sense based ROMs for non HTC devices. I know I have seen them for the galaxy s. So if you can get a non HTC dual core and want it to have sense, I'm sure you can find a ROM out there. However, from what I have read the second gen snapdragon (aka scorpion, according to HTC's specs) processor can hang with them fairly well especially with o/c kernels.

I would like to add, that the Infuse has 428 of RAM and the Inspire has 768, very noticeable difference. Yes, gsII is going to be a beast, but I still don't wanna touch a Samsung. After having one of their dumbphones for a year and a half before getting this phone at the end of Feb, and reading their mishaps with the last year concerning the gs line and the fact I can't stand douchefizz, I will no longer consider Crapsung. I'd rather wait longer to give up my Inspire. The only phone I will give my Inspire up for right now is the rumored HTC Holiday. This is my first smartphone, and I am very happy! Liked em since I first saw the Evo and Incredible last year. Now, since owning this phone, I am HTC 4 Life!

I am SO glad to see this. I had been jonesing an Infuse, but couldn't find a RAM spec. Jones now over. All I need is an overclockable kernel for Inspired Ace and even the 1200 MHz of the Infuse won't give me any envy.
I am very happy with the MDJ's v19 kernel on inspired ace. Overclock up to 1.6 GHz supported. I know some kernels will go up to 1.8 but I find this kernel good for battery life. I have leedroid on my sd card to try, but never have as I am happy with MDJ.

Quick threadjack, been looking for an overclock kernel for IA!
The only d/l link I'm finding is for MDJ v22... any chance you can link me to v19?
I suppose I should keep up with the changing kernels a bit better! V22 is just the latest update. it should be as good or better that v19. Allows higher oc speed best I could tell by the changelog. I suppose I should update my kernel as well! Remeber to change the governor to smarta** for better battery life without the need to set screen off profiles with the ondemand governor. That is what I have read and seems to work, anyway.

oc'ed G2x vs Iphone 4s

I got my hand on Sprint Iphone 4s, and tried couple of things out, and G2x faster in most of web browsing, (Iphone 4s favor in nfl.com, apple.com, buy.com...). Only game I tested is Angry Birds, and G2x a few sec ahead. Why people overrated Retina display when the color is not as good as IPS? Also with the resolution that high make some game have blury looking, but when browsing internet the text look awesome, unbeatable.
Really not fare to compare an overclocked phone with stock phone, oh well, just for fun and made up a reason not to upgrade a new phone
G2x @ 1.4Ghz, Nightly 201, Faux CM 0.4.4, Opera is the main browser use for test.
Iphone 4s, stock browser (Safari), FW 5.0.0.
All test over wifi.
the 4s is not bad and the only thing i think apple products have is the fact that they get all thier needed updates always. The 4s had the same ios as the 3gs. I really wish Google would force this with our phones too!
I really want to see how much more power is inside this G2x but because we dont have ICS yet, I will have to wait!

the reason for google not having updates for every single android phone while apple does is simple:
Apple only has to worry about a handful of unique phone models while android has many more, each with different hardware which makes writing firmware updates difficult since they have to be tailored to way too many phone models.
therefore, in the android world it's easier for companies to make money by releasing a new android phone rather than updating old ones.
G2X is king of performance. Of course it will beat iphone 4s, maybe iphone 5 will finally catch up.
My G2X beats my buddys tmobile sgs2 in everything except internet speeds. In gaming is where the difference is most noticeable, but even in simply scrolling through pages my G2X is the smoothest phone I've ever played with (and I play with about every new high end tmobile phone, and anything Best Buy puts out a live model of).

Well in all fairness, TMO's SGSII is terrible compared to the Exynos versions. The S3 processor in that is probably the weakest out of all of the dual cores. But the G2x doesn't even hold a candle to the real SGSII's which have the Exynos processor and the all powerful Mali-400 GPU.
With that said... I still love my G2x.

the reason for google not having updates for every single android phone while apple does is simple:
Apple only has to worry about a handful of unique phone models while android has many more, each with different hardware which makes writing firmware updates difficult since they have to be tailored to way too many phone models.
therefore, in the android world it's easier for companies to make money by releasing a new android phone rather than updating old ones.

Well still, there are a lot of different phones and hardware but that's no excuse to keep our systems behind the curb. They release the source and should require companies to enforce updates.
Apple has more control of its hardware and software.
Like I said they do a great job keeping their stuff up to date. Even the older 3gs.
I love my g2x just tired of waiting for an update and using in official roms that all seem to have issues.

you basically repeated what i said...
you're right its no excuse but android depends on the developer community due to its very nature that it is open source. Also since phone companies are able to make more money by marketing new phones, they do that instead

Enforce updates are definitely the key words. I'm surprised no one has opened lawsuits about phones with security flaws not being patched by the carrier/manufacturer, etc. I hope in the future the carriers and manufacturers will take updates a little more seriously, or maybe the pure android and manufacturers' code can be updated independently of each other. You may say I'm a dreamer...

I disagree here, the tegra 2 is at the bottom of dual core phones when it comes to memory bandwidth with only 2.4GB/s. The S3, isn't much higher above it at 2.7GB/s. Both of those SOC's are way behind the likes of the Omap 4460, Exynos 4210, and the A5 which all have 6.4GB/s. So I'd hardly call anything with a tegra 2 powering it the king of performance.

The Retina Display in the iPhone 4/4s uses IPS technology, the iPod Touch 4G is the only one that doesn't use IPS.
And I completely disagree, the A5 is much better than the Tegra 2, processor wise they are almost identical (note: Tegra 2 does not support NEON), but GPU wise it's really no comparison, I still like the G2x better though.

Lets put it this way... I wouldn't make the G2X an ambassador for Android phones. I had an iPhone4 but had to get rid of it when I changed carriers because Wind Mobile doesn't support any of the frequency's that the iPhone4 supports. The iPhone4 (or now the 4S) both kill the G2X! even though the 4 is not dual core. The retina display kills all of the Android phones that i have seen with its superior clarity. Only phone that I havent tested is the Galaxy Nexus, Can someone confirm if retina display is better or Galaxy Nexsus screen?.
If u try zooming in on a picture like X5 the iPhone4 will keep the picture crystal clean. U even start noticing hairs on ppls bodies lol. G2X screen on the other had gets blurry & blocky almost instantly.
As for web browsing on 3G... Iphone4 opens larger web pages (pages with ots of pictures or galleries for example) way faster than the G2X, but on wifi both phones are fast. I would love to be able to hack an iPhone 4 & install ICS on it.
Just sharing my experiences of both phones w u guys

Try to run Angry Birds on Iphone 4/4s and see how "clear" it look, I didn't mean retina display is bad, I just saying some games don't support that high res, and make the game look blurry, but Infinity Blade look bad ass on Retina, I never seen any game on mobile look that good.

Sticking with the Bolt, personal opinion!

I'm holding out, nexus doesn't impress me against what I already have. Would only gain on dual core. Waiting for a couple coming releases offering good specs with multi-core. HTC is already playing with a quad-core, waiting to see if it will still have a early year release! I like changing phones, but its better to feel like im actually upgrading!
I'm good with my Thunderbolt, have good battery life, clocking @1.6ghz, and has better camera. Not dropping from 8 to 5mp. Thats weak, thats why thunderbolt was reviewed to have the best mobile phone camera. Ha, my front camera takes better pictures than iphones do.

Google Talk Video Chat Issues
I've liked the Thunderbolt pretty well, but since we finally got the ability to use Google Talk for Video Chat, I've been VERY irritated that I can never get it to work over Mobile Data.
Have you experienced this issue? Video Chats should work just fine over a 4g connection, but basically every time I try to initiate or accept a video chat on my Thunderbolt it doesn't connect and says something about a "Network Issue."
I am able to successfully get vid chats working over WiFi... but come on.... this is supposed to be the Flagship 4G device. Video chat needs to work.
Anyone else experiencing the same?
Any suggestions on a fix?
lovin my tbolt still.. hell i remembered reading leaks about it..my morning newspaper was reading up about this phone, love the design and specs....rooted with bamf forever rom, clocked, custom kernel lovin it still.. and eventually we'll get cm9 gonna sit back n wear this phone out until a quadcore or something
Gtalkenabler from market will solve that for you!

The MP argument isn't valid. MP are not everything. I have seen pictures taken on the iPhone 4S and they truly are better looking than my bolt's pics. I'm not even an iPhone fan no would I want an iPhone but saying that your camera on your bolt is better than the iPhone 4S' is just being stubborn.
In terms of the nexus upgrade, a lot of people said the same about our phone when it was released. Hardware wise the TB was going to be (and has been) overshadowed by newer devices. It's all preference. I would love to have a Nexus just because I can finally have an AOSP phone. If you prefer sense that's different.

With CM9 around the corner and almost a completely functional MIUI, why change?
I keep wondering what is wrong with me because I have absolutely no interest in the Gnex at all - its nice to know I'm not the only one! The Gnex seems like the ultimate geek phone so I feel like I should want it, but I'm happy with my Bolt. The fact that I don't have an upgrade until May helps too....

I am sticking with the Thunderbolt as well. One thing that I will really miss when I do change is the kickstand. I didn't think much of it when I first got the phone, but it is really something that I use everyday.

I mean I would prefer an AOSP phone with the support of a nexus device. Getting these upgrades pushed immediately and without major bugs would be great. MIUI is functional but audio wise it's still pretty messed up. No disrespect to the devs, just that the audio output on MIUI seems to be low quality right now.
All in all, like I said it's all preference. the SAMOLED screen is another huge plus for me as well. I like AMOLED so much more than LCD
Yeah, I can qualify for an upgrade through VZW, but I'm not super impressed by the Nexus. I'll have to see how the Droid 4 turns out though (envious of slide-out keyboards). The Nexus still has verizon bloatware -- I'm not sure what else they've managed to stuff in there. Either way, I'm still pretty pleased with the Bolt.
I love my Tbolt. Best phone I've ever had.
I was very excited about the gnexus, even though I don't have an upgrade any time soon! The camera on the gnexus is FAST! I've seen video of it taking pictures every 3 seconds or so, and stock ICS is soooo sexy. However, the gnexus phone will be obsolete in a few weeks (of course thats with any phone)
The Bolt was my first HTC phone (I always had Moto before that) and I don't think I'd ever go away from HTC now. I like the Bolt that much. I did use a corporate upgrade to get a Rezound but ended up giving that to my wife in exchange for her Bolt so now I have an extra one I can try things out on while keeping my Bolt as the daily driver. I'm running BAMF Forever on the DD and InfectedROM's Sense 3.5 build on the experimental (and hopefully at some point an ICS build with working data.) The phone is just a workhorse and with all the dev work on this phone it's the flagship for me.
Definitely Keeping

Totally agree! HTC's put kickstands on other phones; I hope they come up with a true upgrade that still has one (only this time one that flips OPPOSITE the battery charging port...)
Agree with the others in the thread as well that there really isn't a truly better phone out there yet on all dimensions; TBolt is still very relevant.

This...to an extent. In regards to seeing a difference between 5MP and 8MP, really the only time that you'll truly notice a difference is if you are blowing up the picture in larger format (8.5x11.5 +), but first you have to take into consideration that most people use their cellphone cameras for:
A) taking/uploading photos/videos to social networking sites (e.g. facebook et al - which already compresses the hell out of the photos anyways)
B) for prints (if even) 5x7 and lower which you will not notice the difference.
Now with it being a cellphone camera of course the pictures aren't going to look as good as a camera with a lot better sensor (or even one at all). The reason why Samsung went with a 5MP camera instead of the more standard 8MP is that the 5MP camera has a better aperture which gives you an almost instant photo instead of waiting forever for it to focus and gather all the light information in order to take the photo.

You know they make cases that have kickstands built onto them for phones without them, right?
Yep going to be rocking my bolt for almost another year
I've played with various dual core phones and I see no real speed improvement over the 1.4ghz thunderbolt, and the nexus camera downgrade makes me somewhat uninterested in that phone, as much as I like nexus phones, I still like to have an sd card, it's a major downside to me. Unless it breaks, I'll be rocking this phone till november of this year, when I have an upgrade available, I'll wait for a quad-core phone with an LTE chip that is significantly better off battery wise.
I'm happy with my Thunderbolt for now. I got lucky and got it as a mid-contract upgrade on Craigslist - brand new for $200 and I'd only had my Incredible for a year. The build quality is the best part, in my mind. It feels indestructible.
I use TANGO for video chatting.. works flawlessly for me.. 3G-4G-Wifi. Plus its cross platform so you can video chat with your lame iphone friends. Free download from the app store.. check it out.
Ten things I love about the thunderbolt:
1.kickstand, wanted it ever since my brother got his EVO 4g
2.the dev work for the phone is amazing, over 50 diff ROMs.
3.the speed and overclockability
4.Looks and performs sleekly
5.A front facing camera
6.almost no problems with it (that's just me)
7. I get 23 hours of battery life now with kernels
8.meallic finish (hated the evos plastic)
9. TRUE 4G (not that crap Sprint is trying to sell)
10. Does everything I want
