Motorola confirms bootloader to be unlocked late this year - Milestone XT720 General

Sent from my XT720 using XDA Premium App Motorola has confirmed that their will be An update that will unlocked bootloaders here the problem to only to carries that support it.

already know it.. but for our xt720?????

Yes if your carrier supports it

r u sure ??
i read the news anywhere.. i think they said "only for phones that got updates this year" ?

I saw on Android Police that it doesn't apply to phones already dropped from updating list. Then again CBW is doing weird things... so maybe they'll manage it.
Guess we'll see.

I believe phone would beincluded because this originally had 2.0 I not how long ago it was but I have a ton they need to include who getting it but I have read were they said its up to the carrier of they support it them those customers will her unlocked. Only time will tell.

Motorola is firmly committed to delivering an unlockable/relockable bootloader solution. This will be applicable to all devices that are scheduled to receive updates in the second half of this year, indicating the possibility that existing, locked devices may receive updates to unlock them in Q3 or Q4 2011.

hmm, xt720 had 2.1 when it was released.. not 2.0 ?
hmm but maybe if cincinnati bell update is released, xt720 will be one of these devices:

**** Motorola! I bet you will make CM7 work before they unlock the bootloaders.

hm but Q3 wouldn't be bad , right ? july = Q3 = second half of the year ?

Sometimes I ****ing hate having chosen the XT720. I wish I knew as much about android back then as I know now. The guy at the shop in dubai even showed me a Defy...damn man. Even the milestone 2 was better. I ****ed up bad.

U guys are phunny!
U guys are phunny! I don't beleive a word that Moto prints.. they aren't going to unlock us.... Look at their track record... ain't gonna happen fellas. You see their week-ass posts to questions from their own customers on their own support forum... they are liars & a joke. as MCP says "End of Line............."

We may try to port ms1 unlocked bootloader if it will be so...

what is the "ms1" ?

Usually I would not believve motor but this has been CONFIRM and yes motor did help them with update 2.2 but will bell go to bat for us and let bootloader be unlocked.

I really love the look of the XT720 honestly. One of the best looking phones on the market imo. I got it knowing that we would probably never see more than Dexter's Froyo. I only have minor regrets about it (mostly I didn't realize that there was so little RAM and also as I see more Android OS 2.4+ announcements I realize just how quickly this could be totally out of date), but I still like the phone and there was no alternative available on my network anywhere near the price I got this for, so it was definitely a good purchase. If Moto actually unlocked the bootloader that purchase would be even better, but guess we'll see if that ever happens.

Yeah it's probably getting held back for Rogers to test and or lock up the phone like the whole HTC Dream fiasco.
And here i thought, we canadian beat the US for the first time having x10 in our country before them... but now we are last in our update. Where is our justice!

Actually, they say that it will be released sometime between October 1 and December 31. Makes some sense, as it's not expected to be released anywhere until the end of September, and if it falls even a week after that it'll be October.
With that said, it wouldn't surprise me if it does take Rogers until December. Have they even released 026 yet? That's why I rooted and went with the generic ROM. Been running 026 for like a month-and-a-half.
As others have said, as long as a generic X10a firmware gets posted somewhere, we'll be set.
I think Canadian cell phone users were anticipating this though. It happens all the time. For once I almost thought we'd be close to par but I saw that tweet earlier as well.
Ah well. Thankfully there's a strong online community and we'll have this minutes after it's released

Debrand = remove operator logos, apps (bloatware), etc. Lets you use generic FW and FW from other carriers
Unlocking = allows you to use your phone on a different carrier. No more binding to carriers. You'll want to debrand your phone and use a generic FW once it's released... we'll definitely be getting a late update from Rogers.

T-Mobile working on G2x software fix, Gingerbread coming by summer

http://www.bgr.com/2011/05/26/t-mobile-working-on-g2x-software-fix-gingerbread-coming-by-summer/
Let's see what the outcome will be.
Didnt we know this already? Isnt there a thread dedicated to this?
Like I said when I posted this link half an hour ago, summer is less than a month away! Though a few bug fixes would be nice before then...
I wonder if the phone will remain "out of stock" until the update?

T-Mobile may issue this fix at the same time it rolls out its planned Android Gingerbread update, which the carrier announced will occur sometime before summer.
Summer starts June 21st or something. So "before June 21st".
That's how I read it. Note they didn't say "during" or "over" summer.
this is tmobile we are dealing with and you know how the updates for froyo with the vibrant went. yes i know this is not samsung but you have to think it is tmo and it is possible that they didnt want to release it so i will wait until the end of summer when we will possible get it. so do not come on here on june 21 or whenever the beginning of summer and expect to have gb on your phone that's not how tmobile works.

Yes, but in this case a lot of customers are waiting for an update to make their $500 phones work. T-Mo and LG have some serious incentive to get an update out ASAP.
EDIT: If I have to wait more than a month or so for a basic bug-fix update I may look into a full refund under lemon laws or whatever.

yes that's true it is the companies fault but as you know if lg, htc etc sends tmobile gb with free tethering or something similar then tmobile will most definitely send that version back until the company fixes it or until tmobile can block the feature and they will also have to be able to put their bloatware on the phone so it is tmo fault if say lg releases gb on june 1 and tmobile doesnt get it out until aug because they want to bloat it up with crap.

Oh yeah! you mean the unfinished GB? I can totally see how that's ready for mass production updates. >.> yeah bro. Again I see exaggerated time tables and to much blame put on Carriers. They're the necessary evil don't get be wrong but their involvement is minimal compared to what you all believe, slapping on"non removable" bloatware onto the Software is more simple than you give them credit for. Agreed options like free wifi are obvious rejected versions but that doesn't result in multi month extensions.

I talked to the CBW guys downtown in Career Tower (sub contracted, not corporate store) about the elusive upgrade they are supposedly working on and you would have thought I was the 2nd coming. He was excited but had no idea what I was talking about. I mentioned the Facebook page thinking b/c he is not corporate that he might know more backroom stuff and he had no idea about it. Thank you for xda, b/c CBW's right hand doesn't talk to its left hand b/c it is dolling out money to Motorola for exclusive contracts to outdated or locked phones.
And always remember, even a broken clock is right twice a day.
Nothing surprising here...
Hopefully we get some success with the CM7 soon... Also hope CB does actually come through with that update -but it has been two months+ and we still haven't seen anything...
I just wish Motorola would unlock the freaking bootloader. That's seriously the least they can do... unfortunately that's probably not going to happen.
This very strange because my bell contract told me that they considering going to 2.2.3 I have seen their 2.2.1 update but not the 2.2.3 I don't trust bell but I also here motor is holding them up.

Samsung or ATT?
We don't know who is holding up the update, do we? It could be either Samsung or ATT. It's so frustrating that Ice Cream Sandwich is supposed to be released within the next few months and Infuse owners don't even have Gingerbread yet.
its the captivate all over again, over emphasis on updates(2.2 works fine for me), and a carrier that doesn't care about updates. why make the infuse their flagship and not push samsung to update it? i mean motorola got the atrix updated and att doesnt push that phone as hard, htc also got the inspire updated, att doesnt give a dan about that phone. but i really think it is samsung who wants to push updates only after a new device is released (sgs2!) and only because they want the new device to look beter the the "old" one
Bottom line here is simple: don't ever buy hardware in anticipation of future software releases (with the exception of a Nexus device). Once the device is sold the manufacturer really has no obligations to ever have anything to do with it again except for warranty services.

Truth be told I have an atrix ( which I love, great little workhorse ) and a infuse coming monday, Also have a droid incredible, and a inspire, and a few others laying around,
But the funny thing they all do the same thing, just some slightly faster than the other, etc.. right now even the droid incredible/nexus 1 still is plenty fast for gingerbread... and does everything those new dual core beasts can do.. for me its gonna boil down to design and the screen, much like when i used to shop for a pc/laptop.. <----hardly use those anymore, too. my 2 year old asus still runs like a champ. guess my point,. is choose what you like. dont get caught up in specs and hype. ..

if/when ics does come, how long do u think the g2x will stay relevant in the market? Cause it does got blazing specs.Yeah there is gs3 out and all the htc Ones but they just dont seem "quality" products to me. only other thing im considering is the galaxy nexus. I think if ics came out the g2x should be able to last another year or two until google brings out something completely new like key lime pie or kettle corn. If ics does come out then ima wait till the next gen nexus with next gen android is out
Possibly good news from our good friend Paul O'Brien. He says it's definite and even "imminent" for the 2X.
