Brick and no insurance - Thunderbolt General

I hadn't bricked. Just A question. If I brick my phone with gb and I don't have the insurance, they won't replace it right?

Depends on how you bricked it. Technically software updates still would allow warranty repair (as far as I'm aware). But there are rooters who start rooting without really knowing what they are doing and brick their phones. Obviously when they go in asking for a new phone Verizon has no proof to what happened and usually honors that warranty. I could never do this in my right mind. But if I bricked my device through an update that wasn't my fault (say the recent Thunderbolt GB bricks), I'd collect warranty. There is no way for them to prove that you were rooting so they usually honor it.

My guess is no, but its worth a shot.

If you flash something leaked/unauthorized its not covered. If an official ota (once it's pushed) bricks you, then it's covered. Keep in mind if you trick somebody @ Verizon and get them to replace it, they may not know the truth but HTC will once its sent to them. These things hurt the root community in the long run.

They will cover it. I've sent back phones still rooted rom'd evrrythig. They don't care!
They do not take the time to check what your running they just wipe the phone right away. Myself and several others have sent back phones without spending the time to put back the stock rom. Just go for it!!!!

I would just get insurance if your rooted. It seems there is no rhyme or reason when or if the phone will brick.

If you run into a particularly stubborn rep who keeps pressuring you for answers, or specifically asking if you have installed anything on it, just keep shrugging your shoulders as if you have no clue. Be natural about it, and just say it started doing this on its own out of the blue. Because they obviously cant tell if you did anything they'll have no choice but to give you another.
I dont think HTC will mind getting back a bricked phone from rooting, because they know 90% of the reason you bought the HTC in the first place was because it has a strong rooting community. They'd rather keep people interested in their phones than the occasional brick they have to replace, which they will just use for parts or whatever anyway.

This is the right answer. If you bricked it via your own doing (read hacking and screw something up or it bricks from an experimental radio that was leaked) and return it as defective, that's kinda like opening up a can of Coke at the grocery store, drinking it, and then sitting it on a shelf and not buying it. Nobody will probably see you and you probably won't get caught. But it's wrong.
If an OTA from Verizon bricked it, then return it.
But before you resort to either of the above answers, talk to some people here (or in IRC) first. You can probably fix it and probably won't need to return it.

My Droid X was covered when the Gingerbread OTA bricked it, but I couldn't have had it covered if I rooted it and was installing a custom ROM.

You will not able get replacement without insurance and you will end up pay full amount cost of TB for the replacement. sucks

They have a new policy now, if you send back a phone that would not have been covered under warranty, the tech at the warehouse will take pictures and email them to you as proof.
They will then proceed to charge you up to $300 on your bill. Non-negotiable, non-refundable.

People just unroot your phone before taking it anywhere or sending it anywhere.

I couldn't agree with you more. Too many people abusing the root process. You chose to root your phone. You knew what the consequences could be. But YOU decide to return it for warranty when you screwed it up? *sigh*
This is why manufacturers have to modify their return policies to something rediculous.

Depends on where you bought the phone. If you bought it from an AT&T store, they are getting more and more knowledgeable. They always check the phone now, and about half of the reps will know if the device is stock or not.
And they WILL notate the account voiding your warranty permanently.

Rooting your android phone doesn't void your warranty. Now, if you bring me a bricked phone, I may look into it more deeply, but afaik rooting doesn't harm any return possibility. Jailbreaking an iphone is a different story because apple handles the warranty, so we have no say what you can or can't do.
you never know who checks the phone, and its not that big a deal to return it to stock. rooting is actually against atts warranty policy. not sure how samsung would feel. my brothers x10 was actually checked for this by a guy who knew what he was doing. and trust me, you never want to get a letter from att saying you owe em $445 -> http://i.imgur.com/6NVDO.jpg (this was about something different and att ended up regretting sending this to us and ended up owing us as there was no water damage, but still...)

Here in SF bay area att they know. And once they caught you, they might void your warranty and will be on record, so don't suggest this just it be safe. But life is full of risk if you want.

Replacement to mt4g by T-mobile?

Hey all,
I've been a long time lurker on these forums and I've noticed quite a few people upgrading to the Sensation. From what I can tell, there's a way to get a FREE Sensation by sending your mt4g to T-Mobile for repairs since HTC no longer makes the mt4g. Is this correct? I asked a T-mo customer service rep and she said it isn't true. Of course, she could have been told to tell customers that so we don't all suddenly break our phones and have a new more expensive phone given to us.
If this is true, how can I return a phone after I've rooted it? I've seen various guides on how to return to stock and put s-on back. Would this be enough to get passed the voided warranty issue of a rooted phone?
What if my mt4g is actually in 100% working condition? Is there a safe way to damage it just enough to warrant a replacement?

Yeah, I read about that too. I would tell them up front that I will not accept a downgrade but require a phone of equal or greater value. I'm used to crappy service from these big companies and have found that if you make a big deal out of something, they'll do anything they can to shut you up.
only a few lucky people have gotten the Sensation as a replacement... :/

as far as bricking... i guess you could always flash a Radio or some system file not made for this device... but be careful with that

My guess is to press one of the hardware keys hard enough so it gets stuck. Probably the track pad since I've read reports of people getting theirs stuck. Worst case scenario here is that your phone has no track pad, but who uses that on their mt4g anyway?

be careful, I think in your situation it would be best to report it lost. Personally, my wife lost her phone and they were going to send us an LG phone, but I said no way. It is the MT4G or a better phone. I also told them that my contract is up in a few months and will leave if i get an LG. They said they will call me back today.

Flashing a PD15IMG.zip from another device doesn't require root access...
Plus I turned in a dead phone that was rooted. They never found out or if they did... they didn't care.

Hypothetically, you could TRY getting, say, a radio from a different HTC device and renaming it PD15IMG.zip and placing it on the root of your sd card. Boot into bootloader and it will check for the file and ask if you want to flash it. Flashing the wrong radio will totally screw your phone over. No root needed. However, I can't condone insurance fraud. That's highly illegal
Id imagine they'd send you an HTC mytouch 4g seeing as it is still sold on there website so no use In destroying your phone unless you have a bad emmc/screen

Unless they're in a good mood or something they'll send a sidekick 4G (A pink one at that) and I've gone as far as demanding to speak to a supervisor to no avail and then I see 3-4 guys getting sensations, ugh. Hahah but yes flashing a radio doesn't require root neither does pulling the battery a few times while doing that.

Honestly, i don't understand why you want a new phone in the first place, the MT4G is a great phone and probably performs as well as the sensation anyway...
And Nic, you're right, they offered my a sidekick 4g and then they got upset that i didn't want a downgrade lol....
I have the bad emmc but good screen (which makes it all better)
I would like to see a "good " screen, because I've owned 4 "bad" ones, & they have all been brilliant. In fact, I can't see it getting any better...

I've never done this, and I had the same view as you expressed here. But after reading of so many people thinking of doing this, and no one expressly trying to stop this, I figured why not join the bandwagon.
If you can't beat em, join em, especially if there's no opposition. Anyway, relax. This was mostly theoretical and I've decided to wait on the HTC One for my upgrade. Or maybe even something even better that may or may not spring up by then.
I doubt they'll send you a sensation...
A couple of months ago I got a replacement phone sent because the proximity sensor on my old mt4g would cause the screen to go black during a call and I would not be able to get it to turn back on unless I turned the phone off. So I sent off my old phone and got a replacement mt4g.
I'm pretty sure they still have them in their warehouses.

So because I live in an area where there are dope dealers I should sell dope too? I guess keeping good values when other dont is just too much for some people... I refuse to let myself be brought down to,that level. I find it more gratifying to work my ass off and save a little to get the thing I want/need, rather than lie cheat and steal! Bricked, need help!!!

I had CM9 On my rooted Samsung Galaxy S3, and my phone would crash randomly in the middle of changing songs on playerpro or in the middle of phone calls, so I tried to download SiyahKernel hoping it would add some stability to my ROM. Well I had 2 different versions of the kernel somehow. One was SiyahKernel 3.something, and the other was 2.5. I assumed the 3.something would be for the S3 and the 2 something was a false download that I got on accident and was made for the S2 or something, but when I tried to flash the 3.something it didn't work, versus when I tried flashing the 2.5 it installed perfectly fine. So, here's the fun part...when I went to reboot my phone it died COMPLETELY. I can't start the phone in download mode to odin it, can't get into recovery to flash an old nandroid. Phone won't turn on, won't charge, will do absolutely nothing, and I know for sure the battery was charged to 90% when it crapped out. I've done battery pulls, I actually did a 3 hour battery pull at one point...I don't have insurance, and I don't have the $$$ to go buy another phone, so if anyone has some ideas on how I could either get my phone back operational, or a cheaper solution (like a jigg) it would be MUCH appreciated. I wasn't just a noob jumping into it on my S3, I've been rooting, romming, and flashing **** since 2009, and it's my 10th smartphone, but my first brick ever. Please help!

If you can't get into odin mode or recovery then your phone is deffo hard bricked n will be costly to repair mate. Be careful flashing kernels n use odin to do it not recovery mode

I had the gs2 and I was trying to unroot it and I couldn't even get Odin to work because it didn't recognize the phone. So I called samsung and told them that got an update, but after it finish updating it cut off and never came on, and the battery was fully charged. So, if I was you I'll go that route. And good luck

Could I do the JTAG process MYSELF, or is paying them 60 dollars the only way to solve my problem?
That seems like the only way to fix this, because as of right now I seem pretty much screwed.

Note for the future: always a good idea to carry the cheaper (just asurion) insurance if your gonna root and flash. It's $5.18/month. A quick "oops I drove over my phone, or its on the bottom of the Atlantic", and boom.. New phone for a C note.

This post is ridiculous. Asurion blows, never have had a good experience with them over using 5 phones insured by them. Only ever had 2 crap out on me (hardware-wise. If it was ever software related I did it, and knew exactly how to handle it, but the 2 that were done were spidered screens). They gave me a broken refurbished evo back for the very first phone I ever had that I rooted, rommed, and hacked on for DAYS trying to learn the entire process...all those manhours and they send me a refurbished phone with nothing on it, and a screwed up LCD digitzer...do NOT recommend asurion whatsoever, and will never use them again no matter what carrier I go with.

Why would you use odin to flash a kernel? I use cwm all the time for roms and kernels alike. Odin for radios or to return to stock. Cwm does everything else I need it to do. Same mistake could have been made on a computer guy downloaded two kernels and flashed the wrong one.

imo insurance fraud is not the right answer. the right thing to do is research then flash, dont flash then research. ofcourse its now standard in america to be bailed out for every mistake we make, so perhaps your right.... I have yet to cave in and accept this kind of mentality.
The profit margins these companies make is ridiculous to begin with. It's not fraud, the only thing that may be considered even close to it is claiming that the phone is missing or damaged beyond repair due to something that was out of your control. Non the less your insurance covers all these avenues twice a year.
In reality, a bricked phone should be covered under insurance, and I'm sure if you have the proper legal knowledge you could argue that further and make them cover it without having to tell a white lie. Insurance is simple, covering a loss. And a loss is technically a brick (that's not open for debate either, that's correct), but there is a loophole they use where they can refuse to honor a claim if they feel to do so (hence modifications).
F that. I pay for insurance, I do my part. Not to mention when I actually signed up for the insurance, I asked the vzw rep if a rooted phone is covered, and his response was exactly this: don't take a chance, smash it up and send it back, or disappear the device.
I do not abuse or condone anything of what I said, I have yet to make a claim, but be assured, if I brick my device after 5 years of carrying ins. I am getting my money's worth out of it.

I finally relented and updated to the official ics update (i know). Phone died during update and subsequently bricked. ( no light nothing wont cut on, ETC). I called motorola and found out phone is under warranty but ill have to pay to send it in. Through out the whole conversation they kept trying to shift the blame to google or att and not take responsibility. So what do i do now? I want my phone fixed and i didnt brick it, they did from the update. But i shouldnt have to pay when its under warranty. Im very fustrated and now know i will never buy another motorola phone.

Well that is a tough one. Was your battery fully charged before you commited to the update? Because if you updated with 50% battery life then the blame will be on you. But, if you had a full battery and the update halted and that's what caused the brick then I would just take it to AT&T and give them a sob story. Depending on how long you have been with them they might work something out with you. It can't hurt to try at this point.
Nope battery was @97 percent when it started installing. I cant send to att because i bought it off contract so the responsibility lies with Motorola.

Unless by some form of magic you can't talk them out of charging you to fix it then you might have to bite the bullet on this one. If you don't mind me asking, how much are they trying to charge you?

Like the other guy said, you should be able to find these phones for less than that on craigslist. Otherwise, you can use this opportunity to pick up something else. For $200, you could pick up an S2 or some other easily modded phone.

[Q] Question about returns of damaged devices

Hi, and if I'm breaking any etiquette or there's a post someone can point me to, feel free to give me a smack upside the head!
Here's my issue. I've had the S3 since release, and it's been a great phone to me. On my birthday this past weekend, a friend decided to play a prank and was going to do something to my phone (probably change my background to something stupid, who knows.) I noticed my phone missing very quickly, called it using another phone, and in his drunken stupor he tried to "cutely" hide it in his jacket and completely missed the pocket and threw the phone, quite hard, onto the floor. This resulted in a crack screen, but the phone does turn on yet.
Now here's my issue. This phone has been rooted since the instant I was able to, and was running a KitKat ROM at the time of the accident. I did have the extra insurance, which I utilized and filled out honestly without thinking about the fact the phone isn't stock (next day I was still a tad drunk. Mid 30's crisis and all that.)
So now I have to return the phone. What is my best bet? Should I attempt to get it back to 4.3 using these instructions (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2586319) if I can even get into the recovery blindly? Should I damage it more? Am I worrying for no real reason at all? I'm at a bit of a loss here. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks all.

If you filed an insurance claim, don't worry about it. Asurion doesn't check to see the OS, like Verizon does when you try to 'warranty' the device. If it's broken, they sell it for parts or they refurbish it, flash it stock and Verizon is never the wiser to what they had to do to your device.
I speak from personal experience.

Great, that's excellent to hear. It's in pretty bad shape, honestly. I generally take good care of my devices, but it's been around the block a few times now. This is the first time I've actually ever had to use my insurance, so I wasn't sure about how they handle it.
I had heard some bad things about the replacement devices they send out due to being refurbishes, but so far the replacement device I've gotten works well. It's battery lasts for quite a bit more than the two I switched between before, too, which is nice.

Don't worry about the refurbishes... I've had 5 total in my years with Verizon and have never had serious issues. AND if you have the 'extended warranty' coverage with them, like I do, if the phone wonks out, take it to verizon as a warranty replacement. The only problem I ever had was a wonked modem (hardware) on an old Droid RAZR; I took it to VZ and they warrantied it it, giving me a brand new one. Note, you might get a refurb through the warranty process, but VZ has a lemon rule, so if you have to return 3 of the same device, you can get a different model, brand new.

Lemon rule is not true. You MIGHT get an employee who is soft and doesn't want to hear you complain about your phone anymore and make you an offer they're not supposed to. If you do, good for you I guess. But there is no lemon rule. Your warranty covers the phone you purchased, not a different model.

My wife worked as a tech in a store for 3 years and I've personally had a manager tell me that's their policy when I had 3 Droid 2 phones go to crap on me. Maybe it's changed, but vz had a lemon policy that my wife used to have to abide by.

I'm a tech in a corporate call center. They don't have techs in corporate stores anymore. I don't know about vendors, but all replacements go through either tech support or customer service. Like I said, you might get someone who just wanted you to go away and offer you something you are not entitled to, and of course there are instances when exceptions are made, but as a policy, warranty covers purchased device.

Must have been something her regional manager had as a customer service policy in those specific stores; she was told it was a company policy, but that could have been a misstatement.
Anyway, to the OP, don't worry about refurbishes.

Yeah definitely don't worry about "refurbs". Most refurbs are phones that have nothing wrong with them and were sent back because of user error or they wanted a different phone and thought if they said there was something wrong with it they'd get a new one. Refurb really only means it can't be sold as new.

I dealt with a similar situation in my old compy shop 10 something years ago. We were resellers for a few brands (Acer, Lenova, some others) and the Acer "refurb" units were pretty much all returns to big box stores from people that decided that the laptop didn't fit their needs. Lenova refurbs, on the other hand, were just that. They were still very reliable, though.
Ive heard of the "lemon rule" but never had the option. Wat ive heard from am employees its not a policy but they make exception like that to keep customers happy and coming back. Its more of a YMMV type of thing. Honestly i wanna work at a vzw store ill put xda as my reference . Once i was opening up an insurance claim over the fone the lady was nice look up my info amd told me of i had extended warranty wich i did to go tp vzw and ask for a new fone. The lady was nice most reps would of jst taken my money. Is the deductible still $100 for thr S3
