You're probably thinking why this idiot has posted a short rooting guide with no pics for the HTC "G2"/32B/Sapphire. I know there are others out there, but they are too long and take too much time compared to this method.
Well, with this method, you DO NOT need to DOWNGRADE to 1.5/1.6 from the OTA Froyo and is COMPLETELY friendly with non-data users, like me. This method WILL give you su and superuser access on the OTA Froyo update.
Instructions:0) (As a pre-requisite, backup your sdcard on your computer, just in case, because the apk is known to erase/format the sdcard in the phone; It never happened to me, but it is better to play it safe)
1) Download gingerbreak from this thread (Yes, I know it says gingerbreak but it works on froyo also)
2) Install the .apk, run the apk
3) Phone will reboot, if successful
4) You are rooted! Superuser will be installed.
5) Continue below if you desire to continue to flash a custom rom

EDIT: Please test and confirm it is working. If this method works, goldcards will not be needed to root devices with S-ON
Now you have root, now what?
Download the 'busybox installer' by Stericson.

Click to collapse
After installing busybox and rebooting, you need to flash recovery.
Instructions1) Download this binary (flash_image) as the OTA Froyo does not have it.
2) Download the recovery image from this thread: AMON_RA Recovery
3) Unzip, and copy the binary to sdcard and rename the recovery image you just downloaded to 'recovery.img' for simplicity
4) Now, I hope you have Android SDK installed as the next steps would be much easier with it (You can do it via terminal app on phone also)
Code:
adb shell
su *NOTE(You may need to press "allow" if the superuser prompt pops up)
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cp /sdcard/flash_image /system/bin *NOTE (You cannot 'adb remount' or push any files to system/bin, that is why cp is used)
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
5) Recovery should now be installed, and you can update your spl so you can install other roms, radios, hboot, etc...

Can this method be used to achieve S-OFF on a 32A Device, running Rogers 2.1 Sense rom with new 1.76.2007 ENG SPL and new radio?

I think you can try this method, but make sure you flash a matching recovery. Maybe RA-1.7.0.1 or Bladyle's RA-2.2.0. After that you can flash S-OFF in recovery. What's your current SPL and Radio?

I asked this because the 1.76.0007 ENG SPL should have S-OFF. Try this command in fastboot mode: fastboot oem eraseconfig. After this check if the security of your SPL changed back to S-OFF.
It is only tested working on a 32B device with 1.33.0013 S-ON perfected spl (that came with the Froyo OTA update, if I'm not wrong).

Why does the title say 1.33.2013?
The only 2013 spl i know of is a edited 2005 spl that was used to trick updates... and its s-off
There, fixed it. I mean the *Perfected SPL* that comes with the Froyo OTA 32B Update. Sorry for confusion.

You don't NEED to downgrade, but I find rooting 1.6 is the easiest way.
If this guide didn't work you might want to do the rooting manually. Go to c-skills.blogspot.com (hopefully thats right. Going by memory) and download the gingerbreak or killinginthenameof binary (gingerbreak is made with gingerbread as its main target, killinginthenameof was gonna be gingebreak but Google made some changes that prevented it from working. They both should work but if one doesn't, try the other) and run that in a terminal or adb. then push superuser.apk and su to their proper places (/system/app and /system/xbin I think). I can be more detailed if needed.

Okay.
Install rom manager from the market ad try to flash clockworkmod recovery. If it works, you had root and can now flash roms. If it doesn't.. post that and ill give better rooting instructions
So I rooted with super one click method and have a working super user (I think) it let's me use titanium and set cpu...so can I just skip the first post and start at the second post right?..and if so I was wondering if anybody knows if I can just start flashing away after the second post instructions or do I HAVE to flash a new spl..currently ship s-on .33.0013 I have the ota update radio as well...I'm not a noob to android as I have a cm7 nightly powered s-off tmobile g2,but a noob to my wifes mytouch, when I rooted the g2 (the way I did), is I rooted it then entered commands into terminal to get s-off, flashed cwm, and then it was game on...so is flashing a new spl the same as getting s-off in a way?? And if I have to, can somebody give me a link to a recomended spl?? Any info is appreciated..ty.

copy the eng spl update.zip to sdcard,
go into original rom recovery mode (press home+power 2 time), you will have the option to run update.zip
if hboot update success, congratulation... and share with us!

Sometimes i wonder whether ROM dev asked HTC to put so-called perfect SPL.
So that stupid and curious people like us happily flashed the update and stuck here.
So that we cannot disturb the devs who made customised ROM since we cannot flash any other ROM.(except new RUU update for other countries)
just kidding.
hope somebody can help us.
I am very confused, i keep going in circles. Before you say use the search, I have. I just seem to get more and more confused. As in my title, am I rooted and what steps do I need to take now?? I had the perfect spl and now I updated to the newest one. I am unsure what to do now. I thought I should download Amon Ras recovery image but once I flash it, the recovery mode does not boot. What phone? What ROM? What steps did you take to get the SPL on to the phone? Is it an engineering SPL with S-OFF? What recovery are you using?
You need to provide more information.

Make sure you use the recovery that says G in the end, not H. This is because you have 32B.

this guide will take you from stock 32b, to rooted and running the latest in one of the popular custom roms. follow it to a tee, and you cant go wrong!
For notice:
radio is like BIOS drivers (this is not a ROOT)
SPL is like BIOS bootloader (this is not a ROOT, enginered one only gives you ability to use fastboot and to load some modificated ROM outside of OTS)
ROOT have 2 parts:
kernel with some modifications
modificated SU app installed in system
So after changing SPL you have no ROOT at all
Merci

what originally happened is that i accidentally flashed my phone with an 32a RUU update, which didnt finish and got stuck on the RUU mode screen. I flashed it with an arabic RUU and i now my phone is up and running again. That is definitely what comes up on the fastboot screen. Is there a 32b RUU that I can update to? or can i root my phone?
Official 3.03.990.6 SenseUI ROM for Vodafone - is where I got the rom from.
You should follow the instructions on this post. A friend of mine did the same thing and I used those instructions to install Amon_RA's ROM for 32B Magic.
Since you' ve already installed the Arabic ROM, you should do the rest:
Then follow below link to root the phone:

Then start phone recovery mode and update the SPL to ENG SPL 1.33. 2005 from below link:

Sir, you are a legend. I've finally sorted it after a couple of stressful days without my phone!
NOT COMPATIBLE WITH DEVICES SHIPPED WITH GINGERBREAD 2.3
One click Radio S-OFF tool
YouTube videoHTC - Quietly Unlocked
About:
This tool will make a Desire HD Radio S-OFF after it has been permrooted with Visionary. After running this tool, you can flash any ROM and kernel to your device using ClockworkMod. No bootloader S-OFF needed! You use this tool at your own risk!
What's the difference to other methods?
First of all, this is easy. The steps are straightforward, you do not need to tinker with complicated command line stuff. Radio S-OFF is the way these devices are meant to be made S-OFF, it is a safe way. If you use this method, reverting to stock is very easy! Unfortunately without ENG bootloader (my other tool) you cannot use fastboot commands (advanced stuff) and, for example, my Kernel Update Utility. To make a raw comparison, this tool is for everybody including new users and the eng hboot S-OFF version is for enthusiasts. Many experienced users have both, because having both allows supreme flexibility.
I recommend to use Radio S-OFF instead of traditional bootloader ENG S-OFF, because this can be more easily removed and is much much safer!
System requirements:
Windows XP SP2 or higher
.NET Framework 4.0
HTC Sync (or ADB drivers)
Desire HD with stock kernel (or Apache14's 1.0.7 / 1.1.4 Sense)
It will not work on 1.72.405.3 or higher build, or new radio (12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26_M is ok). Downgrade first!!
So, in detail, the Root & S-OFF process goes like this:
Install Visionary
Open Visionary and tap temproot, then attempt permroot now. Your device will reboot.
Connect your phone to a computer (make sure you have USB Debugging enabled. Connect charge only!)
Download the Radio S-OFF tool and place it in the root of your hard drive (c:\[tool folder goes here])
Open my "Desire HD easy radio tool.exe" (Windows 7, right click & run as administrator), choose the first option, click "Do it"! There may be a SuperUser request on your phone, allow it.
Done. (Remember to click the thanks button)
But you might want to continue if you are a new user:
If you want to flash a radio (to improve signal and battery life) some day, do ENG S-OFF (no need to use Visionary again, just run the tool)
To flash a custom rom: Get Rom manager from the market, which will install a ClockWorkMod recovery for you. Just open it up and tap "Flash ClockworkMod recovery"
Download a custom ROM, put it to your SD, and flash it using Rom manager or ClockworkMod itself. You can access ClockworkMod through Rom manager. It is recommended to do "wipe data / factory reset" in ClockworkMod before installing ROM from SD card.
It will create a backup of your phone partition 7 (radio config) to the root of your sdcard, I recommend to keep that somewhere really safe!
To go back to S-ON:
Flash stock ROM (RUU, not over 1.7)
Temproot using Visionary
Use my tool, do Stock CID and S-ON (enter brand CID if you had a branded device, see second post)
Enjoy your factory-state phone
If you like my work, please consider: (or just hit the thanks button )
Thanks: Paul O'Brien for visionary, scotty2 and others who found the method to patch P7, Guhl and everyone else who has worked on the G2 root, gfree and wpthis, link to the source code, those have been released under GPL
Download link is in the end of the second post
[TOOL][VIDEO] One click Radio S-OFF, SimUnlock (Easy Root Guide)
FAQ:
Q: Why is this Radio Tool, does it flash a radio?
- From end user's view, it has nothing to do with radios, the name comes from the S-OFF technique this tool uses.
Q: I cannot find "System Info" in SHIP bootloader
- That is normal, just refer to the CID list when reverting to stock.
Q: How can I revert to full stock, I have ClockworkMod and/or ENG S-OFF too?
- Just follow the S-ON instructions.
Q: Can I use ENG S-OFF with this one? Which one first?
- Yes you can, it does not really matter, but I would do Radio S-OFF first.
Q: Does no fastboot stuff mean slow device startup (no HTC Fastboot)?
- No, I am talking about issuing commands to the bootloader through USB.
Q: Is this Radio S-OFF permanent, does it go away if I flash RUU/factory reset?
- It is permanent until you remove it using this tool.
Q: I already had ENG S-OFF and I ran the tool, how do I find out if it worked?
- If you used the first option, see bootloader system info. There should be CID-11111111.
Q: I have now ENG S-OFF and Radio S-OFF, how do I get to stock?
- Just follow the S-ON instructions, everything will be back to stock.
Q: I have 1.72 or higher system, what should I do??
- Downgrade using this guide, or flash Raidroid if you already have ENG S-OFF & ClockworkMod.
Q: I tried to flash a radio, but it says not allowed!
- You will also need ENG S-OFF to flash radios, because ENG S-OFF enables fastboot commands.
Q: I want to make my device stock, I cannot find the RUU but I have a backup of the stock rom.
- Follow these instructions.

Checking the device state:
- Go to the bootloader (turn fastboot off, turn off phone, hold vol- and power)
- If it says ACE PVT SHIP S-OFF in the first line, your device is Radio S-OFF
- If it says ACE PVT ENG S-OFF, you have ENG S-OFF, go to System info
- If system info CID is 11111111, your device is SuperCID
- And if you can verify either Radio S-OFF or SuperCID (and you did both), it worked fine and you have both of them
- You can check your original CID by going to radio tool folder with cmd and typing: "adb shell getprop ro.cid"

CID list:
- Unbranded: "HTC__001"

Troubleshooting:
- "Unknown error, probably connection"? See here, try with WiFi enabled.
- If that^ did not help, open a command window, go to the tool folder, and type: "adb shell" and "su". Then leave the window in the background, and run the tool again.
- "SD card failed"? When phone is connected to PC, check with some file manager that SD is accessible and works. Try another SD.
- Make sure you are rooted by downloading Terminal emulator from the market, write "su", '#' should appear.
- Check all the requirements. Twice. HTC Sync is mandatory!
- Keep your phone awake when you are running the tool, a superuser window might appear. You have to allow.
- Check your SD card, and tell us in the thread if a p7backup appeared on it.
- If it says Done and the CID does not change in ENG bootloader, you have most likely flashed too new radio.

You will have to wait until Apache14 releases his kernel, which allows you to use command line to flash back the backup that is on your sdcard. The kernel works, so it is just a matter or time

can not flash clockworkmod also.

So, this patches radio?
So if we run an oficial RUU or OTA, it overwrites the radio, thus restoring back to S-ON?

I can confirm that.

yes tell us pls
This is permanent radio S-OFF as opposed to just ENG HBOOT S-OFF which can be wiped if you flash a standard ROM/RRU.
Flash this and you'll keep S-OFF no matter what you flash

wow thanks
cool story!
THIS ROCKS!!!!!!!
If you use this one, you cannot use fastboot commands. If you like to play with your phone, then use the another one. This one is somewhat safer, however. In worst case scenario it is not possible to brick a device by using this tool, although to be honest, the other one has very very strict safety measures, too.
Jonny, the ENG bootloader will also survive a RUU if you do not have radio s-off.

so should we flash yes or no?
and why?
I have a backup with my stock ROM but when I go back to it everything still these such as root,s-off,Rom manager . So if I downloaded a clean stock ROM it will take everything off like it was when I first started phone up? And if I use this tool I can use stock ROM and my device is always s-off no matter what I do? Ifso how would you take s-off if needed for warranty issue. Thanks

i have bought a htc desire s a few days ago and am stuck on gaining root access.
managed to get to s-off with revolutionary but it got stuck when it tried to install clockwork.installed rom manager manually, but wont flash recovery because no root access. tried gingerbreak and superoneclick for root access but both dont work.. any ideas?? have a branded version from chinaunicom, i cant even download the android market, so this has been a very expensive brick so far..
HBoot 0.98.002
androidn 2.3.3.
htc sense 2.1

gingerbreak work but with hboot 0.98.0000
try to downgrade to 0000 then try gingerbreak again...must work
One question for you. Why didn't you install the recovery that comes with Revolutionary ?! It's also ClockworkMod and you could easily root your phone through a flash zip. Why make things complicated ?
L.E: If it S-OFFed your phone, it has gotten root permissions, so I can't see any problems on installing CWM.
Check this out.
I've not tried it yet, but it should be the solution to your problem.
thanks for the help i m sure downgrading will help but i have tried a few guides and none of them work... has anyone has another one up their sleeve?

Did you try also the guide I suggested? Just to know.
of course i did... but for me the revolutionary does not install cwm, gets stuck on downloading...
Mmh.. I understand.
There is an issue which is not so clear to me in that procedure. The guide says you get temporary root access, and in that very moment you should launch revolutionary, but the set of commands I can see in the "code section", don't convince me enough. Something tells me that performing all those commands, especially the latest ones, the temporary root access is going to be closed. Maybe the revolutionary software should be launched before issuing the latest two commands. Maybe this is the reason why you are not able to install CWM.
Of course, this is true if, and only if, I did understand the guide correctly.

I see what you're saying but it does work.
Basically running the fre3vo tool enables you to get TEMP root access on your device which you can then use when running the revolutionary tool.
Now that you're S-OFF you should be able to follow the instructions below in order to install RECOVERY, I'd recommend EXT4 (which is based on CWM)
install-instructions:
download zip package you want
put it on the root of your sdcard
rename it to PG88IMG.zip
reboot your phone in bootloader
go into hboot
hboot will check your sdcard for the PG88IMG.zip and ask if you want to flash update
confirm flahing
reboot your phone
rename the PG88IMG.zip back to something else cause if you are in bootloader, hboot will try to flash that file every time when it is named PG88IMG.zip
Let me know what happens....
cheers guzs thanks a lot for zour help! i ave run the fre3vo & revolutionary method a couple of more times and after 3 times it somehow worked! downloading mz first rom through rom manager now! cant wait to experience the real android world with out htc limitations!
ben_pyett: thank you for your explanation. I'm not so expert on Recovery programs; I'll follow your advice.
BTW: I see you have 0.98.2000 hboot. Since I've never seen that, I guess it is different from 0.98.0002 and it is not a typing error. Isn't it?

To be honest i'm no expert either.
The boot loader that I have is the ENG (engineering) one and does have this version number.
Let me know if that works

I am trying to launch revolutionary on my linux box, but every time I try to do it, it says:
Code:
bash: ./revolutionary: Permission denied
It has execution permission (777) and the phone is connected and has the TEMP root access. So, this "revolutionary" software doesn't work to me.

did you type "sudo ./revolutionary" ?
do you have the phone set with USB debugging on?
See HERE for further help from Revolutionary documentation
Thank you for replying.
Yes, I used sudo (I didn't doing with sudo before!), I have debugging mode ON and I've already checked the help documentation. The problem now is that the program suddenly quits and it is due to some missing dependency, actually, if I try to execute revolutionary on a Debian Linux 64bit (into a virtual machine), it runs properly.
As I've already written here, it would be useful to know what are the dependencies required by revolutionary so that I can install them on my Gentoo too.

Did you achieve S-OFF and manage to install CWM through the Debian VM method?
If you didn't why don't you try running it from a Bootable Ubuntu CD/DVD as described in the this thread Search for "How To: S-Off your device with Revolutionary: S-OFF & Recovery Tool"
No I didn't S-OFFed my device yet. I want to do on my Gentoo Linux. I'm studying how to check what are the dependencies needed by revolutionary. I was trying ldd, but no lucky with that.
I only saw that on a Debian x86_64 virtual machine revolutionary works.

Told you that it must work. Try to avoid downgrading and stuff, especially when you are new to android. It's safer this way. Good luck !

Thanks for that. I bought my Desire S a few days ago and it says in the bootloader that it is S-OFF already. So I didn't do any adjustments myself so far. I tried what you suggested but without success. When I go into hBoot it scans for the file, then briefly shows "parsing...[PG88MG.zip]" and that's pretty much it. Nothing else happens.

Hi!
It's strange that it is already S-OFF.
Anyway, I have a doubt about the hboot version. I don't remember now the exact version number, but it's not 0.92.2000. My previous one was: 0.92.0002, when the device still was S-ON. What about it?
