Reduce screen battery usage - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was looking at my battery stats, after 12.5 hours my display has used 58% of my battery. Is this abnormally high for this phone?
I am using automatic brightness.
If this is not normal how can this be helped/fixed?
Thanks

use a pure black wallpaper, turn off auto brightness, and set it at a lower brightness manually.

Also an app called "screen filter" works great. I have 2 widgets with these settings with the app
1) 48.6% (indoors, just to darken it a bit)
2) 25.5% (at night, dark rooms)
Of course mess with it and find what works best for you

the widgets themselves use up more battery.

Really don't agree w/ you there. All they do is turn the app on/off at the selected setting. If the app isn't running they aren't doing any damage.

Screen filter seems good but it gets too dark at 48 for me, ill try a bit higher. As for the black wallpaper. That looks pretty bad IMO. Is it really worth it?

It doesn't have to be completely black. Basically dark colors helps out. Try and stay away from whites as much as possible

I am using the original honeycomb background, pretty dark but with neon blue.
Im going to try 52% filter with auto brightness. Should be good.

any widget uses more battery than creating an app shortcut. Theres nothing to disagree on.

[Q] Making a notification light

can anyone either make me a app that makes the camera flash a notification light or point me in the right direction on how to make it myself? I am not very good at coding but I'm willing to try to learn. I know a little java and html, although it's been a while for both so i doubt they will be much good to me. Thanks!
you try noled yet? its pretty nice and almost (almost!!) makes me not miss having a notification light.
Or just maybe make the lights on the buttons below the screen go off......

this would be awesome however I think its only doable through some custom kernel work which isn't possible as of yet since imnuts and other kernel devs have no source code

How is Noled on the battery though? I tried it on my fascinate and it seemed to eat through the battery. This has been almost a year ago though.
NoLED will slightly lower your battery life, but it's the only option we have right now. We just can't get true BLN without the source code.

It does eat your battery because it unlocks your phone. That said, it does have the option to stop itself after a set time frame. I'm never away from my phone for more than five minutes, so that works for me.
I have the proximity sensor setting on for NoLED and it saves the battery a ton! The screen stays off when it's in your pocket or holster and shows the notification as soon as you take it out. NoLED is honestly the best app I have on my charge. I love seeing the icon of the notification rather than having to remember what app was yellow or blue!
BLN seems pointless on this phone. The back light on the buttons is too weak to even notice it during the day. Which I did enjoy BLN on my fascinate, but seems like it wouldn't work very well on the charge.

That's not at all true if you're indoors. The button backlight is plenty noticeable even under fluorescent lights, and would be even moreso flashing.
I could be wrong but I believe this (BLN or back LED flash) is only possible through some custom kernel work, and since we have no kernel source code yet it can't be done... your best bet now, at the cost of battery life, would be noLED

Ya it is a custom mod for a kernel. Could be cherry picked into the froyo kernel source from neldar's github.
Fyi I am having IMoseyOn take a look into it since the people have spoken

Thanks. Currently I switched back to froyo so if I could cherry pick it in there, that would be awesome

-A good, fast launcher that's fully customizable
-I love notification toggles

Notification toggles are a must. I can't use a rom without them.

-HDMI output control
-Ability to use both Netflix and HBO Go.
-Colorized theme
-Toggle controls (sound, wifi, data, gps, etc) in drop down.
Battery life is the most important aspect for my daily needs. Not of big fan of CM7. I would prefer a Rom setup similar to stock regarding internal and external storage.
Add lots of color but keep the fonts stock. Theming the black and white icons found on stock would be great.
+1 on the NetFlix comment.
Thank you for your efforts.

Personally I would like to see a pure Gingerbread rom with OC'ed kernel and just adding the Theme Chooser. I don't need notification toggles because I can just use the power control widget on a homescreen in order to toggle. I'm more interested in speed and stability myself and don't worry about battery life like others. Though I can see how battery life would be important. I OC right now to 1.55/1.55 with performance governor, so my personal battery life is crap, lol.
Just something simple, stable Kernel (but without sacrificing performance and battery life), and definitely gotta have the LG camera.
So, I'm guessing most of you would like a 2.3.3 based ROM?

Would be nice if it were 2.3.5, lol.
2.2.2 has Enables for Background sync, and Auto-sync. I'd like to have a timed sync - like while "screen off", every n minutes allow background and auto syncing, then disable syncing.
It appears that when WiFi calling is active, the cell radio is enabled or occasionally enabled? I'd like to see the cell radio totally disabled when WiFi calling is active.
Maybe the wrong thread, but it'd be good to be able to "nice" individual processes.
I suppose some of these are already do-able, I just hadn't found it yet.
Thanks.

Weapons does not have the ability to play Netflix. CM7 does, but HBO Go doesn't work; plus CM7 doesn't allow you to adjust HDMI output.

Here's the problem...Weapon was serious buggy. GPS wouldn't lock, battery drain and it would freeze up on me. After the last Black screen of doom I had to wish it goodbye.

Screen is way too bright

My biggest complaint with this phone is that the screen is far too bright on its lowest setting, which I feel is a huge reason the battery life isn't as good as it could be. My iPhone can be turned down way dimmer than my Captivate. Is there anything I can do about this? Any apps or hacks that will allow me to dim the screen further than the OS allows?
--Thanks.
PS. It's rooted and all that goodness.
Trysome of the widgets from the market. I like the one from curvefish. Don't know if it will make it darker, but you definitely have better control over the brightness.

Thanks, I definitely like the added control with that app but it's still frying my retinas sadly.
You could look for a kernel with voodoo color. But you would have to use a custom ROM, I don't think the kernels that support it are compatible with a stock ROM.
Edit
You could also use darker, if not completely black, wallpaper and themes.

Switched over to the Talon Kernel, which seems to have a dimmer screen by default, but I don't see any options in the voodoo app for adjusting the brightness of the screen (just RGB and gamma).

Lower the gamma hack value. If they are at 0, 0, 0 now, try it at -30,-30,-30. It wrong change the color perception, just brightness. Play around with it and find what you like.
Sunglasses work also or you could get an iPhone.

[Q] Which Flashlight App for MT4GS?

I am using Undead's ICS splashed 3.0 which comes with Nexus Torch installed. The "bright" setting is incredibly bright, but doesn't stay on steadily. I have tried a good number of flashlight apps from Market (including the HTC 3 setting clone - or is it the original?) but all seem about as bright as regular setting in Nexus Torch. It seems that they all use the video light setting as opposed to the camera flash.
Has anyone found anything, if not as bright as Nexus Torch on "bright", at least brighter then the rest?
Try teslaLED I think its called, I used it on other devices idk if it works with our phone, states its the brightest flashlight app for android..
Sent from my HTC myTouch_4G_Slide using Tapatalk
I did try it (I have it on my phone right now) and it doesn't seem brighter then the others (I also tried Brightest Flashlight, AOI Flashlight, Maxflash, Tiny, HTC clone and others) and I think it is because they use the video light. I think I even came across that point somewhere that they actually run your camera/video. The nexus one (N1 torch) is way brighter, but doesn't stay on steadily. If you run the video light while taking a video you'll see it's no where near as bright as the flash for a picture.
I also wonder how the standard HTC app has 3 different settings, and no other app does.
Lastly, I find the color of the LEDs interesting, they're not as bright white as on my HD2, does anyone have any info on them?
I've been using tesla led for years. Stable. The widget is good and it has an ics theme button which looks nice

There is a very good reason why the super bright feature won't stay lit up steadily on the ICS Rom using Nexus Torch light.... Hint, it's way too bright and long term exposure will burn out our LED lights. Sooooo leave bright enough alone or fry your phone....the choice it's yours my friend

From my experience the led being set on bright has never given me trouble on other devices. As far as I know from my various dozen or so Android phones the brightest by far has been the G2. I've kept that thing running on bright for a minimum of an hour without it giving me trouble while I had to drop the tank in my truck to change the fuel pump on the side of the road......
Frying leds is almost as fun as burning up a dry clutch hehe.

[app] brightness apps

Been several posts in Q&A, and in general about best methods for adjusting brightness. Personally I like the slider in the notification tray, but the app Q Bright is by far the best app I've used for this purpose. Full slider, 4 customizable presets, full app customizations, fast acting, oh yeah, it's free.
Thought I'd share.
It's actually Qbright one word
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
I like screen filter. It's free as well. It can make the screen go dimmer than with the notification slider. Q bright is pretty cool too. Wish I had a search key to long press to bring it up though haha

I've been using Lux for awhile now and it's been working great.
I also use lux, but everytime i reboot i have to open the dash to get it to work. I have the notification icon active, which always says for some reason 50% after boot until I click it. Lux works with tasker and i like that for profiling.
<quick hijack>I've been on the hunt for a widget I can pop in my homescreen that will jump between preset brightness levels. I generally keep my phone around 5% or so but when I'm outside I can't see that. I can pull down the notifications and adjust the slider but a button on my homescreen is much easier.
This one works pretty well but the icon doesn't center properly and my ocd brain can't take it. Plus sometimes it will just jump between 30%-100%...No idea why.
Sorry for derailing the thread
</hijack>
Saw that too, I couldn't deal with the off center widget either. I mean seriously, wtf? Who wants that on their screen?

the best app I have ever used for adjusting screen brightness and saving your battery would be LUX. It is in the Market for free but the paid options are far worth it.

I agree. This is what I've been using for.months and love it! It allows you to set custom presets based on the current luxury, which you can use the default reader or even use the camera to detect. I use default, and set customs by long pressing the link button on the luxury widget.
