[ROM] Cyanogen's 4.2.1 Full Update - Unlicensed & Illegitimate (Plus Theme Template)
Sorry.. I am pulling this all, too many issues.
as much as im for cyan following the rules... i want to say one thing...
in all my time using cyan, its always updated perfectly, with my only having to MAYBE wipe occasionally before update... but the last dual update... I LOST Root.. had to go all the way back and get it again, then when i finally flashed the second rom, it was running slower than EVER before.. which then made me decide to try out the hero roms, since i figured it couldnt get any slower..
So to sum it all up.. i think this is a GREAT idea and i dont think CYAN should or will get upset from it cause he needs to do what HE needs to do and everyone else can do what THEY need to do..
just make sure that CYAN ALWAYS gets his credit when this is done..

Good initiative. But if I install this to remove a theme, can I flash the other cyanogen's updates over it as per normal? For example, 4.1.9999.
Uhh.. wow.. All I was trying to do was contribute in some small way to the community effort here. I figured I could clear some of the congestion from the official thread by helping newbies install the ROM. Obviously it is too hard for some people to follow the simple instructions Cyanogen posted, which is why that thread exploded...
But, to each his own..

Yup, this will put your system files at a point where the Cyanogen backuptool.sh will recognize the proper ADP based files, and backup/restore them as expected. All md5sum's match for the required libraries, etc..
Yea flashing IS common sense.. but check it out.. when you do the SIMPLE task of flashing and a group of issues come.. COMMON SENSE says look for a better route!
I think my non CM recovery image hates more than 1 update per boot....If this fixes my lag bug,thanks!

Dude.. seriously... do you post this crap in each of the other [ROM] threads where people are just taking other peoples work and calling it their own? At least I don't take any credit for anyone's work. And I suppose this could have gone into the General Dream section, but I felt it would garner the most attention here, as it is where people go to look for ROM's and ROM updates... Honestly, if you are that disturbed by it, report my thread to the mods and let them decide.
To those of you saying let the Dev's post their own work, why don't you let the Dev's handle the situation. If Cyanogen has a problem he will make it known.

This is really cool and all for those who haven't flashed their 4.0.4 or 4.1.11.1, but wasn't the whole reason why it wasn't in one update was because Cyanogen got a C&D. If I had to be against this, my reason would be, because this might incite some more C&D towards Cyanogen and maybe more hate mail from Google again. Regardless nice work, but I think you should ask Cyanogen what he thinks first; out of respect of course.

yeah, that's so true. f*ck haters... this is gonna be a big help to the community especially those that are having problems with the new 4.1.99999999 update.
This is only going to create another **** storm, all the people that are having trouble flashing cyan's rom in the first place are now going to post there questions here to and we only need one thread for that!. If people really need to sit here and ask how to flash 10 ****ing times then they should be messing with there phone in the first place.

Are you an idiot? Why would you repackage everything into one update after Cyanogen stop doing so. If you can't read simple upgrade instruction on the real Cyanogen rom then why are you using a rooted phone for anyways.
Google upset at this? Let them send a C&D to you.
Until then, people can flash this if they don't want to go through the normal CM installation procedure. I don't see anything wrong with this.

Really, I don't think we should have needed even the one thread for that. It got so far out of hand, so fast, that Cyanogen didn't want to post his updates to XDA anymore.
So, I thought this might lighten his burden. As I am now the one who is violating Google's T&C's, not him. And, this was the method I used to update from 4.1.11.1 to 4.1.99, one single flash - theme and all. I simply made an update resembling the one I posted here. And the update couldn't have been smoother.
But seriously, I welcome the criticism... however, it is really up to Cyanogen and the MODS of XDA whether this is something that should be removed (or allowed). So, voice your opinions... but, if you really think this should be pulled, report it to the mods, send Cyanogen messages, whatever it takes for them to chime in and say "Enough, take it down".
Alright i'll be the first to post that i tried it....
Cyans build's stopped working on my phone MYTOUCH3g AFTER 4.0.4 STABLE. I DID all his steps correctly and still all i could get was to the my touch screen and then it reboots every time. (Yes phone was fully wipped as well as sd card and repartitioned for 3ext) Also tried another sdcard.
Either way i tried this one and my phone STILL gets stuck on the my touch screen and reboots till i pull battery. So i guess cyan's recent builds just wont work for my phone but Thanks for posting this as it was a bunch easier..

I'm new to the skyrocket (coming from an Atrix) and I would really like to get into some development stuff. I have a tiny tiny bit of experience in java. but not enough to say I'm proficient. Where do i start for this device? This is a long term goal for me! input and support is welcome of course! thanks!

i too am interested in this, and have been teaching myself Linux to start with and after i get that down i will move on to roms and kernels. i tried to jump right in and just follow commands others laid out, but when something didnt work or a comand came back bad or errors that i didnt understand. i chose to learn it the right way....lol
but there is a thread in the Dev section for beginers to start cooking roms, in no way is it close to developing a rom though.
first thing to do is search the forums.....there are tons of threads pertaining to what you wish to do. Being a themer I have several theme related threads bookmarked on my home machine which I can post for you but not really related to building ROMs and Kernels.

another thing to keep in mind, when you start reading and learning about building ROMs, every phone is different, things may not work the same....I think it takes a bit of understanding how to piece things together to really get something going.
doing themes is fun, but a lot of work (as are ROMs) so many images to change and .9s to mess with and then there are the xml edits which can be tedious.
it is a lot of work for ROM devs and Theme devs....I don't think either one gets enough credit for what they do.

Oh hey, I see a ROM dev.
Well, I'm learning myself how to make a ROM, and it's not exactly easy, but it's going slowly.
It's really just looking up what everything does, and trying it, and if it borks something, repair it.
Honestly, if you don't know how to make a ROM, like me, the best way is just to mess with files (NOTHING BOOTLOADER/KERNEL WISE), and learn.

Man, I wish there was an organized way to go about learning this stuff. I'm interested in getting started too but it seems like more than half the work is just digging up the sources to learn from.

Well I finally figured out what I was doing wrong just a little while ago and finally got these two animations to work. I would post pic's of what they look like but the limitations are preventing me from doing so, (sorry). Anyways, hope you guys like them!
This is optimized for the HTC EVO 4g, but can easily be modified for other phone models.
EDIT: Was bored as hell the other day, so I decided to create a "do a barrel roll" boot animation. Included are 2 audio files, one with a 5 second pause because the animation lags a little for me at the beginning, and one without the lag.
And if you like them/use them, please hit the thank button. It will encourage me to keep uploading whatever I do for you all, (even if making a boot animation is pretty easy, I'd still appreciate it..).

Just wanted to let anyone know who cares I was so bored yesterday I created a "do a barrel roll" boot animation if anyone wants it.
I need to make an apology. Another dev had to do this earlier and now it is my turn.
He was right. We are all a bit angry at people who are posting unnecessary things, but that is no excuse to be rude. I still maintain that this forum has one of the best communities, and I will not let anyone tell me otherwise. I started on this forum in april of this year. That is 4 months ago. Look what I have accomplished. I am nowhere near the level of some of our other devs, but I am so much better than I was then. I WAS a N00B. I was that person with a million questions.
I remember the first time I soft bricked. It was late at night and all of a sudden that beautiful boot animation that I just realized cold be changed started repeating itself after I tried to flash an update to scv5. I panicked. I opened up the lifehacker article on unbricking, posted a new thread with a stupid question, and I started to realize I had no money to buy a new phone. Bottom line is it was the end of the world for me.
But, thanks to all the wonderful people here, i got it fixed. My heartbeat was probably 200 while the fxz flashed, but I got it done
I now bootloop every other day practically. restoring is no problem. ICS was a whole different story, but that is not for here. That is when I had my first hardbrick. but once again thanks to the help of others I am now on scv7 with some mods to it.
To all of you who have posted stupid unnecessary things, and yes there are many I am sorry. as the Moderator Moscow Desire said in a PM after me posting a rude response that lead to me writing this "n00bs will always be at XDA. This is a fact of life. Yes, they post stupid things sometimes, and yes, they will always NEVER do a search or read other posts. It's always been like this. And yes, it gets frustrating at times."
We know you are out their. and we can try to stop it, but there will be people who do dumb things. But that is not an excuse for any of us to be rude to them. Those of us who are more knowledgeable about dev stuff should be helping those who aren't. My mom always told me in school that there will always be bosses you hate just like your teachers, and coworkers you hate st like your classmates, so you might as well learn to get along with them. She was right. we just need to get along. For us devs there is an IRC channel, and believe me we talk about this stuff, but we all get along well. so for the rest of us t needs to be the same.
Let me start this by saying i am still a N00B, saying that Initially i was also annoyed with all those questions people were asking.. i myself started a new thread trying to clear few basic questions.. but as the time went by realised that the senior community was more harsh than anything else.. the more we teach the more we learn thats what say in my part of the world.. but i believe all is well, all that is needed is that you guys get into serious ICS development once the OTA arrives.. and <3 you guys..

I guess one just has to realise that there are ppl here with different tech capacities. So knowledgeable ppl like u and the other magnificent devs should have a little more patience with us , the eternal the omni present n00bs... u guys are doing a great job !! keep it up!!! We ask stupid questions coz we are scared that the beloved fone will brick...we want to be 10 times sure that flashing will not render it useless...but still we do it ..coz everybody loves a kick!!!! I guess.. my take on this....

Yeah, but on the other side of the coin, if you are on XDA that means you are looking to experiment, you want to try new things, you need a fast and functional ROM or that mod you like so much or simply want to root it and then there are few who are here just to learn.
But for all this you gotta have few attributes
1. Guts
2. Little knowledge
3. Able to go through few threads before starting anything
4. And last but most important, knowing where the search button is.
This still a n00b saying this, dont get me wrong. I am here to learn, i am getting into it slowly but surely. Thanks to the devs.

Well it is really not patients that is the problem that we are all having at the moment. It is the fact that everyone now seems to think they are the ONLY one with a certain problem with x, and rather than posting in the thread that deals with x they make a new thread, and then when you ask why they did not search it is always "I searched, and none of the threads deal with MY exact issue".
The issue with this is that is shows a lack of respect for everyone in here, that might be working on an issue, and that person just bumped another thread that might have that or a similar issue in it, and now everyone is reading that new glowing orange thread on the board.
The next issue is that people have to trust us.
Next, it seems we have a new rash of noobs that don't want to listen and then still post a new thread when their issues is not solved in another thread and then keep bumping that thread if no one replies.
Again these are all thing that show alot of issues and lack of respect to your dev team, we are here to help, but the more you guys all help us, the more we can help you.
P.S. I had to post this same thread a few weeks back, because of all the frustrations as well.... see a pattern here.

I just joined XDA not long ago and I too have noticed a lot of pointless threads. I admit I did post a stupid question before, but I found the answer myself and went back and changed my question. But I did not go and make a new thread about it. I think the issue is A. people are lazy in general, and B. There is so much to try and wrap your head around, and no one wants to brick their device. I only have 1 device and I would love to try experimenting with different ROMs and things, because I am constantly wanting a new phone. I have had the A2 for about 9 months now and I am bored with it. But I have that fear of bricking it and then I am screwed. So for now I will continue to search through different threads and try to learn as much as I possible can before I jump in and try flashing ROMs. I notice some people just try flashing ROMs without really any knowledge then post new threads with the issues that they have. If they would just take the time to read through threads prior to jumping in there would be less of this issue. I just want to Thank all the Devs here that put so much time into all the work they do here!! Definitely the best mobile dev community out there!!

dude i had the same ROM for 9 months before, without a single wipe, and i never got close to bored, the hw buttons messed up so i had to sell. your phone isnt your game console or gf ... its a phone, no offense

Okay, so i've managed to create a rooted rom that I was happy to do. I stayed up all night and up until now figuring out what i had to do. I need just one more thing, A EFFIN' CONVERTER OR A REPACKER THAT WORKS!!! okay so i opened my system.img using sgs2ext4 and edited what i had to so that things can work. Ive been mainly up because i cant find a re-packer that actually works for windows. i know most are gonna say linux,but, i did that with a live image boot and it was painful as hell. looooonnnnnnng boot up, system lags and freezes, and im on a macbook with bootcamp windows and a small ssd. I just need something for windows to do what i need done. ive tried so many within the past 7 hours. much appreciation for anyone who may help.
And please if you are gonna be a smart a$$ and reply idiotically over typos, irrelevant answers,etc... please dont bother.
i am doing this for myself and the community to contribute something that since rev2 has hit our device, only one other has been doing for us, partcyborg. he deserves a break and so here i am.

Listen man, I'm not a mod so feel free to tell me to go kick rocks, but I'm just gonna lay it out for you. I think I can speak for everyone when I say, you don't always have to be so confrontational with your post, and it seems to be every single one of them (take a look through and tell me it isn't to the point of ridiculous). Nobody here is out to get you, and I know XDA isn't as user friendly as it once was, but the majority og users here will be grateful for any and all contributions, because it's what we're here for, to find and test custom projects that we can freely tweak and mod ourselves. You're almost always going to have at least one smartass taking a jab at you, thats life, and you have to learn to roll with the punches instead of making it a big deal. How you worded your post is far more likely to attract asshole comments (and this isn't meant to be one either) than any other, simply because you're making yourself an easy target for those looking to stir some **** up. You basically held up a sign that said, "I dare you to piss me off, just go ahead and try" and you know damn well someone will.
All that aside, I'm excited to see what you've come up with, I've been anxious to do something custom myself, mainly for personal use (unless it seems stable and different enough to release). I am genuinly thankful to have someone else trying to put up some development for our device, as it's been lacking now with all the consistent updates (@Jrkruse, I'm looking at you) So, shoot me a pm when you release it, or quote me if you don't mind, and please don't take any of that personally, just don't want to see another flame war start flooding your thread before you even get anything released. So I'm building the blocks for my ext4 and hopefully soon it will be ready. Partcyborg has been helping me a bunch lately, so much appreciation and credit goes to him. I'm just trying to create a stable rom that's rooted. Hopefully once I get this one down, I can get something else in the works. I have and idea that will probably lighten me up a bit more haha. I apologize ONCE AGAIN. Haha. Yeah most times I'm in that mode,but, when it goes off, no one wants to bother me cause really I am asshole. Don mean to troll or troll my own threads. You had me laughing as soon as I read the post though. Stay tuned and hopefully soon more to come if I can get this damn thing correct.

Well, glad it made you laugh, and definitely no need to apologize, I just know I can be an easy target when I'm in asshole mode myself. And like you, it'd probably be less frequent if I didn't stay up all night coding or reading, I'm on about 70 hrs straight right now (remember to get up frequently and get that blood moving fellow geek insomniacs ?), but hey, I'll sleep when I'm dead, because I'm here for a good time, not a long time.
But again, excited to see what ya came up with, and shout out to @partcyborg for being helpful and making his awesome roms, aaand getting v2 bootloaders running root, looks like we have a clear MVP for this device moving forward. I'll probably try getting in a few Zs, and then going to tinker with my N/O hybrid I just started phasing together.
Happy New Years ladies and gents, another night to to stay up and not even feel bad about it lol, maybe I can make some decent progress before the dreaded 9-5 is back to running my life. ???

Bro really? 70hours! Damn I'd be wigging out on everybody. Must be some good meth there buddy hahaha. 9-5? I lost my job cause I stayed up every night so far haha. Oh well, I just wanted to get something out before next week cause I won't be in front of anything that communicates with the world for a year or 2. Jail is where I'll get my sleep haha. Hopefully it doesn't go that way,but, if it does, Tuesday I won't be available and by the time I get out partcyborg will already have had this phone bootloader unlocked with Roms galore and probably will ha e moved to the n3xt best device haha. I just want a to contribute something before I leave,so, I kinda feel pressured. It's not anyone's business but I'm upfront and at least I tell the truth. So to be honest that's sort of f2f he reason why I been stressed lately and act like an asshole. At least one thing done positively, satisfaction in myself that I can say hey, even if it wasn't huge, I did my small part . Know what I mean? And yes I agree with Partcyborg being the MVP of this thread. He has been the only one to remain here and provide things for us when all others seemed to have abandoned us. Hazmat was the first on these s8+ threads I kept up with. He left after almost completing his of a update root, I finished it off and haven't seen him post or nothing ever since. The 3 greats in my eyes and onlyh one is still standing with us. Ok now I gotta figure out my block size and compile to ext4. I'm here typing a novel haha
