[APP][RELEASE!] Best Wishes - Automate Birthday Wishes to Facebook - Android Apps and Games

I'm the developer of "Best Wishes". It is an application that will pull down your list of friends from Facebook along with their birthdays. It neatly organizes the birthdays into an intelligent list. Once your friends are loaded you can configure Best Wishes to post notifications when birthdays occur. You can put a widget on your desktop to see upcoming birthdays too.
The real reason I developed the app was to automate birthday wishes. I don't visit Facebook very often, so I wanted a way to automate birthday wishes. The automation is very customizable. You can configure a time range for it to post. The app will randomly pick a time within the range. It comes with 10 "canned" birthday wishes. You can edit these "canned" wishes or add your own. You can select the ones you want and it will pick from them randomly. You can specify custom wishes for your close friends. Plus it is easy to exclude or include which friends you want to send automated messages.
Of course, not all friends put their birthday info on Facebook and some have their permissions set so that 3rd party apps can't access the birthday information. For these cases I've added manual entry so you can use Best Wishes for all your friends.
Check it out and let me know what you guys think. I'm open to feedback and feature suggestions. The full version costs $0.99. The Lite version is free.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.unchained.bestwishes
MOD EDIT: FREE VERSION CAN BE FOUND HERE
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.unchained.bestwisheslite
The main difference between the lite and full version is the level of customization that you can perform. The full version allows you to enter custom birthday wishes, include/exclude friends, and it has ten pre-defined birthday wishes that are editable. The lite version only has one birthday wish ("Happy Birthday!"). The rest of the functionality is the same.
Thanks!

Against the rules to have paid apps up without a free version or trial. Better fix that before you get reported.

I didn't realize that was a rule. I'll put up a free version to go with this when I get home tonight.

I added the free version. Let me know what you think.

Cool application, I purchased it from the marketplace. Works well on my phone, but craps out hard on my tablet. Just a heads up. I sent the crash report in, if it's any use.
Best of luck!

Great app! So much more useful than Facebook for birthdays. Love all of the customization in the paid version!

I love the idea, but have a question. Often when I use an app to post to facebook, there is a little tag line that says it was posted via a particular program. Is this going to do something like "Happy Birthday, Phil" "automatically posted by Best Wishes"? I love the idea of automatic posts, but don't like the idea of them knowing that it was some automatic process and not personal.

I have a couple of quick suggestions. First, can you ad an option to search and/or sort the list of people by date so that you don't have to scroll through hundreds of names to find the right person? Second, I see canned messages containing the person's first name. Can you add an option to replace the person's Facebook name with something else? Third, how about including their age, if known, in a greeting?
For example, I have a friend "Worker Bee" and I'd love the canned message to say "Happy 50th Birthday, Brian!" and I'd like to be able to find him in the list by searching on "Brian" *or* "Worker Bee" and see the list sorted by first name, last name, or birth date. Make sense?

Yes, it will say "post by Best Wishes" at the bottom of your post. I didn't like that either when I first realized that. Facebook does that for accountability reasons. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to know if you posted it or some third party application posted it. There isn't any way to remove that message.
I don't see it as a problem though. I made sure that Best Wishes has the capability to just remind you and then make it easy to post from within Best Wishes. If you click on the person it will take you directly to their profile page. If you have the Facebook app installed it will take you to their page in the Facebook app. If you don't have it installed it will take you to their page via the browser. From their you can post your birthday wish.
The privacy constraints can be a pain, but I guess they are there because enough people requested them.

djeaton, thanks for the feedback.

You can search and it is sorted by date. The date sorting expands the current month by each day you birthdays. Then there is one group per month. You can quickly collapse the groups to jump around the list.
Can you add an option to replace the person's Facebook name with something else?

I didn't think this would be useful as a canned phrase because it would be too specific. I had envisioned that most people would just create a custom birthday wish. I will keep this in mind though. It is definitely a possibility for a future version.

I like this idea. I'll probably add it.

You can search now. Just click the search icon in the top right. If you type Brian it will show any friend with Brian anywhere in their name. The list is sorted by last name then first name.
The most friends I have seen are around 1200. The average person seems to have around 300. Extensive sort order can be added. I decided it was overkill for this first version. I'll keep in mind for a future revision.
Thanks again for all the feedback!

That's good. Just didn't want it to look like a robo-post with no personal touch. Speaking of touching the person and going to their page, could you add the option to long-press on them and be taken to their configuration page where you can enter custom greetings or select a canned one?

Yeah, I'll add that in the next release. It will be quick to add the long press options. Thanks for the feedback djeaton.

I'm constantly forgetting to wish my friends a happy birthday so this app is a brilliant for me!

What makes this app any different then this FREE app that looks like it does everything your PAID app does???
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.zixstudio.fbbirthdayscheduler

The applications are very similar, however my application edges it out in several ways.
Best Wishes:
- Allows you to pick a time range which is used to pick a random time each day to post your birthday message. This randomness is useful to make the automation more natural.
- Uses intelligent grouping to make the list of birthdays easier to read.
- Has more pre-defined birthday messages.
- Looks better (in my opinion) because it includes your friends profile picture.
Let me just say, this is from quick inspection. I have not done extensive testing of this other application.
I guess it just depends on what you like. The Lite version of Best Wishes is also free and it has most of the features above.
Hope that helps. I appreciate the feedback!

Thanks!!!! .. Seems really nice application....

Thanks for answering my question. I'll give your app a run and share the link to the market with my friends as well........help spread the word..hahaha

much needed i too dont visit FB much and miss out on wishing bday wishes...thanks...

First off very nice app, good idea and nice clean interface.
Now one problem I have and tours that a lot of my friends don't have their birthday in the app but their facebook does, any reason you know of why this would be happening? I don't feel like going through and adding their birthday manually.
A feature request would be to be able to set a custom birthday message as a generic message and not just one for a specific contact, I like ascii art lol just too make it a but different when I post happy birthday
P.s. I have the paid version

[APP] Out of Milk

Hello everyone,
I've been working on an app for the past couple of months. It's called Out of Milk and it is an intuitive and easy-to-use Shopping List, Spice Rack and To-Do List app. This is my first Android app, so any feedback is welcomed. I just released v1.3 to the Market (the first public version was 1.2 and it hit the Market last week for the first time). Android 1.5 and up are supported.
I've spent a lot of time making this app intuitive, easy, simple. Here is a summary of the feature from the Out of Milk website
V2.0.9/V2.0.10 Update:
This release focused more on getting our Pro features out there. Our next releases will be a little more balanced as far as free/Pro features are concerned. We plan on add lots of features to the free still.
Feature: Ability to specify a product as tax free. Out of Milk will remember this in the product history so that the next time around this item will be tax free automatically.
Enhancement: Spanish language support.
Feature: Sync/backup your list with our servers. (Pro only)
Feature: Manage your lists online on our website (http://outofmilkapp.com/) (Pro only)
Feature: Real-time list sharing with other Pro users. (Pro only)
Feature: Widget. (Pro only)
Feature: Ability to enter coupon information. (Pro only)
Pro stuff can be unlocked by installing the Out of Milk Pro Unlocker.
V1.6.2 Update:
Enhancement: Barcode scanner now recognizes more items that it did before.
Feature: Manage Product History. You can now manually add items to the Product History. This comes in handy for those who would like to setup their Product History manually.
Feature: Move items between Shopping Lists and Pantry Lists. Prior to the update you could only move items between Shopping Lists and only between Pantry Lists. Now it is possible to move an item that is in the Shopping List to the Pantry List and vice versa.
Feature: Scan items in the Pantry List. It uses the same scanner as the Shopping List.
Feature: Quantity and unit is now available on the Pantry List items.
Feature: Out of Milk comes with a barcode scanner included and no longer depends on the Barcode Scanner app from ZXing.
Enhancement: Menu icons don’t look blurry in Android 2.3
Enhancement: Various bug fixes and other improvements.
V1.5.1 Update:
Feature: The Spice Rack has been turned into a Pantry List. You can now have multiple Spice Racks. You can also create lists of essential items such as flour, sugar, etc... which aren't spices.
Feature: More complex editing screen. The Shopping List, To-Do List and Pantry List items can now be edited in a more complex screen that allows for more information to be edited.
Feature: Ability to set the quantity and unit. Current supported units are: lbs, oz, kg, g, L. If you think you might need another unit, let us know and we'll add it.
Feature: Ability to set the price on products. This can help users save money when shopping. The total amount of the list will be displayed at the bottom of the list. Out of Milk will remember the price for the next time you enter the same item. You can also specify a general sales tax in the Settings screen so that the total with taxes is also display. The total with taxes isn't accurate since not all grocery items necessarily taxed. For example in Florida, water and medications aren't taxed. We plan on expanding the price feature in the future.
Feature: Ability to set a reminder for To-Do list items. This has been a feature requested by a lot of users. Out of Milk will remind you by notification on the date and time you've set. There's also a snooze functionality that allows you to snooze the event for 9 minutes (this is configurable in the Settings).
Feature: Using a slider that ranges from empty to full, you can now set an approximate amount for Pantry List items.
Feature: We've added a Note text box to Shopping List, To-Do List, and Pantry List items. It's optional and you can just put in whatever notes you need.
Enhancement: Some users didn't like having their Shopping List sortable. They would have rather have it be sorted alphabetically. We added the ability to have the Shopping List, To-Do List and Pantry List sorted alphabetically.
Enhancement: We've improved Out of Milk's speed despite having added tons of features. Some of the slow parts of Out of Milk have had their speed increase by a factor of 3-4.
Enhancement: Lots of new Settings and configurations.
Bugfix: Keyboard doesn't pop up when editing an item.
Bugfix: "Add from History" list is sorted alphabetically.
V1.4.3 Update:
Speech-to-Text for phones that support it.
Enabled App2SD for Android 2.2.
Updated the UI a bit (no more cancel button, just click back or Done on the keyboard to dismiss the textbox)
Minor bug fix.
V1.4 Update:
Adding items is much quicker and smoother than before. Keyboard automatically opens now when adding new items.
Shopping List History: All items you add are saved to the history. If you scan a barcode and the product could not be found, then the item you typed in will be saved the next time that barcode is scanned again. You can also view the list of history items and add them to the list.
Ability to pick a smaller font size for all lists. To change the font size, press the Menu button on your phone on the main Out of Milk screen, then pick the Settings menu item. There you can set the font size for list items.
Cross-out/Uncross-out all items in a list.
Support for German, French and Dutch locale.
V1.3 Update:
Take your Shopping Lists with you everywhere in an intuitive and easy-to-use package.
Scan products directly into your Shopping Lists using the integration with Barcode Scanner.
An auto-complete database makes adding grocery items a breeze.
The digital Spice Rack means you always know what spices are in your spice cabinet.
The To-Do List lets you add and keep track of any other items on your daily list.
Multiple Shopping Lists and To-Do Lists.
Share your Shopping Lists and To-Do Lists by email or text message.
Reorder your list items on the fly.
Let me know what you think and what could be improved upon. Thanks!
This is a really nice app. Way better than the one I was using. Great job on this. The barcode scanner is an awesome touch.
Awesome app. Very easy to use
I like the idea of having a virtual Spice Rack, reminds me of Shelves which I use for movies.

Thanks. That's the idea. Whenever I was at the grocery store I could never remember if I already had a spice in the spice rack. This solves the problem. I'm thinking of turning the entire spice rack into a pantry with predefined lists such as "Spice Rack", "Dry Goods", etc... That way you can inventory your entire pantry (since it's stuff that doesn't change often)

Very slick app. I like it a lot. I've tried a bunch of apps for this very reason and it looks like I'll be sticking with this one. The virtual pantry idea sounds like an excellent item.
For the lazy, if there was a way for us to take a picture of our pantry and tag it on a list as a list by itself, that'd save some time.
Nice looking app there mate. Will try it out soon

Great App. We (My wife and I) love it!
Suggestion: Would be awesome to be able to share list from OOM to OOM. So that I could use the Done option from the list my wife sends me.
Really nice app. I think I will use it in the future.
One thing. How does the barcode scanner work? I mean.. with what kind of codes/database.
I'm asking, as I scanned some products and nothing was recognized:
book: Lord of the Rings
gummy bears
PS3 game: GTA4
Edit:
Ok, just tested it again and now at least GTA4 is found. And a bottle of Pepsi.
Don't know what the problem was in the first time.
However, I'm still interested in what database is used, as e.g. the gummy bears still are unknown.
Just a suggestion...
What about using a form in Google Docs to allow sharing between multiple devices? You could populate our Google Docs with the required field and then we could share it among those allowed within Google Docs.
Just a suggestion.
Widget would be great but I'll have to wait to switch until you add multi user editable lists. The app I use now isn't perfect but bring able to share an editable list within the app with my wife is key
UI is very good.
I have one suggestion to make which i have not seen on any shopping list apps.
Share Shopping list via Email or text message but with the same format.
let me give an example
my wife makes the list and emails me the list (if it can be a attachment) and then i download it and open it via your app then i can see the same list just like the way it was created and not as a unformatted list in the email...
is that possible?
lovely app, has the potential to overthrone Astrid Task as my main to-do app, grat work!

Thank you for your feedback. I don't have any problems on my 4.1 Galaxy Nexus.
The good news: I also have that issue when running the app in an 4.0.x emulator
The bad news: I don't know, what's wrong there
I'll do some research on that and post here if I can adress the issue!

I have a few requests for your app.
First, I want to edit something I have created. Errors happen, and have to write it again is tedious.
Second, a resume of how much you have. If you got 20 dollars, it would say a 20 down there. If you add a 5 dollars expense, it would show 15 down there.
Third, It would be nice if you could separate the incomes and expenses in categories created by user. For example, I have R$ 27,90 to spend on calls for carries except mine (for my carrier is free of charge). Then I could create a category called: Phone. I would set this 27,90 and, using the last mentioned feature, I would have a control of how much I still can call. Another category would be for SMS + Data usage. It costs for me R$ 0,50 for each day you use each, and I have a R$ 10 limit per month. Then I would have a third category. I would like to keep control on how much i spend at my school to eat.
I think it's pretty good, the explanation, but if you need something else tp understand, let me know.
What could be nice is a use of barcode scaner, you scan some product and you put a price, then every time you scan it, you will have an expense of it
I don't know if i have explained well ...
Another feature that could be great is to have diferents accounts One for register the bank movements and another to our home money xP

1. sounds like an idea, but the problem is the information gathering, what you really paid for the product, because it won't be the same amount in every store, you know?
2. This is already a bit implemented, when adding an entry you can choose wether it's cash or credit card for example
Ok thanks, sounds great, hmm ohh but it can ask you if the prize is correct no? For example, you go to the shop, for buy, the first time you scan everithin you buy with the prize and the next time you go, if you scan the chips, the cocacola..., the app suggest you to put it as expenses
Like if the app reemember recurring expenditures from the past
I just re-downloaded it, and it looks great. I love the style and how it feels, but I do have some suggestions for you, if you get to develop it more.
1) Have accounts - I would love to be able to put my different bank accounts, gift cards, etc. on this, and track how much money I have left in each. Make it so I can put a starting amount on each account, and then subtract from there. Also to make special note of: transferring money between accounts. This was something I ran into with my project a while back.
2) Receipts - It has always been a goal of mine to be a better record keeper. As such, I would love to be able to take pictures of receipts and either upload them to a service for cloud storage or have them linked to from my SD card. This way I can back them up to my computer at home every once in a while and make sure I have everything when tax time comes.
3) While I'm at it, making it so that two users can share the same account... that would be amazing. Joint checking accounts are awesome for couples, but not if they don't both know what's going on.
4) Backups - I don't want to college months of data simply to have it wiped out if my phone goes south. Allow me to backup to my SD card, or, better yet, sending the data in an email so it can be backed up on any computer I have access from.
5) Statistics - We can track our money, and where it goes, but unless we can analyze our spending patterns, we can't see where we need to go in the future. Having graphs and charts would make this really nice to have. You already have the categories all set up, so getting the statistics (and statistics per account) setup shouldn't be too much more.
I have been trying to develop a reliable solution like this using PHP, MySQL, and jQuery for about a year now. The sad part is that I can't interact with the phone's camera like I want to, to allow me to capture receipts. I guess what I'm saying is, I'd love to help you out on the back-end stuff if you ever need it. I'd love to get this kind of project up and running, as I think it can help a lot of people in a lot of ways. Oh, and have you thought about uploading this to Google Play? Are there any limitations holding you back from doing that? I admire what you're doing, and think it's great that you are putting your talents to such a great use. We all need to be more financially savvy, and this is a great tool to help that.
Thank you for your hard work.

Hi m.ark,
thank you for your nice feedback!
Except your thrid point I think everything would be implementable - I also updated the "features-to-come" in first post (thanks to all the others for the great ideas!!)
Your third point is very hard to implement, but I keep an eye on that topic!
A vision is, that one is able to completely manage that stuff via a web interface, if the data is uploaded to google drive for example. Maybe in a late state we can think about collaborating on this thing?!
Regarding the Google Play thing: At the moment I'm not willing to spend the 20$ for the developer license if the app has not even a minimum of possible features implemented - a long-term-goal is definitely publishing this app to Play Store.
BETA 3
Just released and uploaded BETA3 - check the changelog and have fun
Beta 3 looks good, and runs smooth. I love the backup and restore option. It will be a real saver.
One thing I noticed: if you are at the home page, the only drop down from the menu is for backup and restore, but if you are in the backup and restore tool, the drop down menu lists only "Settings" but doesn't do anything. Just a small bug. Maybe have it go back home since there's no way to do that right now other than hitting back?
Once again, thank you for the awesome app. Keep us up to date on how you're doing, it'd be fun to see the progress you're making. Don't make it a chore, though, that's for sure.
How do you change the currency for this?

New version 3.10.9 Play Store with many small innovations

It will not be one of the versions that probably go down in history this 3.10.9, which takes the place of the previous 3.9.17, but, no matter how small, the innovations introduced are numerous and we're not sure appreciated them all.
We start from the section recommended for you. Whether it's app or books (advice on music yet they are not), or even if you are on the homepage of the store, blocking the slice with the Google personalized recommendations you'll notice that at the top there is a new voice, "improve these councils, "which allows us to add people you know to find out their tastes and also receive recommendations based on them (or so says the description of the function). Good theory, too bad that the vast majority of contacts proposed were complete strangers from the other side of the world, with which (we checked) we did not even vague contacts on Google+. We look forward to a future refinement.
Then continue with the translations. Some apps now have a button "translate" at their description, which basically will only call into question Google Translate on the fly to change the text in a language more understandable to us. In this case the theory is good, pity we did not understand when and when not to appear: comparing different applications, different languages, some of them had the button translate it and other were completely lacking. Also in this case we are confident in a future refinement.
If these two functions must be short andarsele a little 'to seek, we turn now to a thing you will see rather often. You will all familiar with the installation of new apps: you choose one, went on his page, click on install, accept the permissions and you will be thrown back to the description of the app while the progress bar will indicate the percentage of completion. Not any more. After accepting the permissions, and then return to the description of the app, you have inserted a new page, which you can see an example on the right. The aim is to highlight related app and installed by others, but the match as you know is not always the best, by clicking on "back to shopping" you will still be redirected to the description of the app to start. We did not find a way to disable this feature, which basically requires a tap in to install any new app. Annoying.
And finally we come to the last news, the only one on which we could hardly rely on something: it is now possible to remove items from the wish list by tapping on the icon in that list, without having to open a description of each app. It is the same method used to delete applications from the complete list of all the ones we have ever installed and certainly saves us a few more steps. Nicely done.
After then the description of the new features, I leave you the link to download the Play Store:http://d-h.st/ZZB
Thank you for the hint!
Thanks for letting us now

[APP][2.2+][Free] Automated Menu Planner w/ DashClock Extension

I've lurked around here for a number of years but this is my very first post.
Hello! How do you do?
Ok now that the pleasantries are out of the way ...
This app was an idea suggested by my wife. She wanted to prepare meals for a month so she could trick me into cooking them on a regular basis. Fail. Diving through her recipe books/websites was cumbersome and she eventually backed off of that due to the time requirement of planning the menu ... any maybe my reluctance to cook them hahaha.
Enter, the automated menu planner. It automatically plans dinner entrees on a weekly, semiweekly, or monthly basis. It learns what you like and creates your menu with other recipes that you may enjoy.
Here is the list of features thus far :
- Automatically planned dinner entrees
- Automatically populated and groomed grocery list.
- Filter recipes containing disliked ingredients.
- A DashClock extension that shows today's entree on the home/lock screen (Android 4.2+)
- Simple UI for tablets and phones.
- Optionally notifies you when it creates a new menu plan.
- Free (w/ads)
There are many more features to come. Check it out and let me know what you think.
Since i'm not at the magic/10 post limit yet, search the Google Play Store for Automated Menu Planner (org.doors.sliding.amp). I'll update the post with a direct link once I pass the limit.
Looks interesting. Here is your link:

Of course, and I will give this a go soon. In a month I lose my job and take on the cooking for myself and my wife, and we are both indecisive when it comes to dinner, so I can see something like this really helping me make those tough decisions.

Wish you all the best and I hope everything works out for you.
Updated to v 1.1.
Fixed a few bugs. Touched up the help screens.
Got tired of the text on the startup screen so I replaced it with a comically large icon. I might find something more appropriate for that area later.
I'm riding the DashClock hype train . I've added an extension to my app that shows today's planned entree on the lock/home screen for Android 4.2+.

[APP][Free]Shared Shopping List

Hello
I wrote a shopping list application, in which i focused on a speed in
which you can create a shopping list and share(and update after that)
it with your friend. So i avoided any forms often frequented in this
type of applications, and came up with a very simple design. You would
just enter your items into the text field with some autocomplete,
adjust the amounts, then click sharing button, select your friend and
that's it.
I also use Google App Engine for server side to keep this free.
I wrote this a while ago, now i would like to improve it to add some
more features, so any feedback and ideas for improvement would be much
appreciated

Cool app. I like it. Clickable link :

I got this idea to many time ago, but was something like ( you should add it) a "social tasks" list, for example, there are some few tasks to do at home, you put this in the social to-do lists and everyone in the family could see the lists, and when the tasks are completed, they should be notified or the task deleted from the social list!!
Just watch the démo vidéo ans it looks really nice !

Really nice app, follows some feedback:
Try to implement the native ActionBar or use SherlockActionBar. Using just the native ActionBar will make your app incompatible with versions below 3.0. Using Sherlock your app will be compatible with 2.1 and above. This will make the app more integrated to the system.
Other changes you can make on this aspect is read the Design Guidelines (sorry I can't post links), learn some thing about good designs and look for other apps searching for inspiration.
Good! My housemates install this app too!

Hi @GammaL, great app!
Can you please add compatibility with Hebrew language? I mean, not a translation - an RTL support on the shopping list.
Please refer to the screenshot I added, to understand the problem.
You can see that the First item in the list is in English and is perfectly readable. The second item, is in Hebrew and automatically aligned to the right, so it's getting in line with the other buttons.
I use OurGroceries app. It is a pretty similar app and easy to use it would be worthwhile a look for feature set. That app also works on iOS and BB platform making it appealing to much wider audience. http://www.ourgroceries.com/

Agreed Holo please. http://developer.android.com/design/get-started/ui-overview.html
Also, maybe you might want to integrate Google Tasks or some more popular to do list manager, like Any.do or Toodeldo. That would make this app truly extraordinary.
Downloaded it but have not tried it yet, but I like the idea
Was wondering, how the data is transmitted from one phone to another ... is it over some server that you have setup?
What if other users end up with similar names? Would every Maryxx receive the list?
Would it be better if those big "- & +" are replaced with a simpler "< & >" or maybe even a manual entry box? Reason for a manual entry box is maybe the item required is 2.5kg or maybe 1.5 cartons or 1.5 litre of milk.
Thanks for your app
How do I login to a username or nickname that I've already created with this app? I downloaded it Friday but flashed a new rom Saturday, so now I can't use the same nickname I created Friday, and my wife is annoyed with me lol.

I had the same problem. This is the only weakness in an otherwise great app. The advice was to create a new new name and get the wife to share again. Was a but complex to achieve.
