Is there a way to definitely stop htc sense to run in background when using an alternative launcher? I use adw launcher and I would like to free up the memory used by sense. But if I stop it through app management, it keeps restarting - of course. And without root, no chance to uninstall the application

go to menu accts sync and unsync weather/stocks/news etc... those apps are what really eat up battery....as far as memory you are going to be ok
In a previous version of Sense, you you changed the home launcher, the next time you rebooted, the Sense launcher wouldn't sit in memory. Now Sense, is a lot more than just the Sense Launcher, so it still will take up memory. I have no idea if this is the case for Sense 3.0, but give it a shot. I'm personally loving the new Sense launcher

It's still the case.
I'm running ADWLauncher.EX, and HTC Sense is currently running and taking up 2.6MB of memory.
To put this into context, HTC Weather is currently taking up 22MB, Facebook 19MB, Google Services 11MB, and Touch Input 15MB.
So I personally don't consider HTC Sense still running to be a problem.

Anyone else keep getting sense restarting after coming out of an app?
Nope... Not got any other launchers installed have you?
I'm sure this question gets asked daily. It's because the sensation doesn't have that much memory, and sense 3.0 is hogging too much of it. A change of launcher bypasses the issue.

strange, my device always has 150+mb free when idle, and 200mb+ when i clean my prog-list,
do you actualy close any programs, or only just use the home-icon.
only a different launcher would not change much, sense will still be present.
No, it's the sense launcher itself that causes the issues, and it's that which keeps restarting, hence seeing the HTC screen while it starts up again. Using a different launcher bypasses the issue entirely, though you do lose the ability to use sense widgets. You still use the sense keyboard and can use HTC's apps though.
I never use the home icon as I don't like leaving apps running, I always quit out of them properly if I can help it. Sense takes up too much of the phone's memory, so when you try to change or exit tasks it runs out of memory and can't do it, hence sense stops and restarts from scratch. Seems to happen more the more apps you have on the phone.
Are you rooted?

I am now, but it was doing it beforehand too. Hence why I use a different launcher.
I have noticed that on my Sensation the Sense interface restarts every time I close the market using the "Back" key after installing or upgrading one or more apps.
It does not happen if I go back home using the "Home" button...Can anyone else confirm this trend?

Do you have spareparts installed and if you do is app management set to aggressive?

I used to have the same problem on stock ROM not-rooted so I rooted my phone and installed a custom ROM. This solved my problem and i have no more random reboots.

I had this same issue and just removed spare parts and bingo it's not crashing any more. Spare parts was kinda pointless on gingerbread as the battery history was the main thing I used it for but that doesn't work on gb.
Thanks d3vilskid
Edit: spoke too soon.... Stopped happening with browser and home key. But still happening with market place and back button.
If u have root u can try the market app ram manager it balances ram for everyday. Use and the paid version can free ram for multitasking And gaming

You can add HOME_APP_ADJ=1 to the build.prop file, and that will prevent Rosie (the launcher) from being killed/restarted by the memory manager.

I like sense but would be interested in trying go launcher. So If I install go launcher will sense continue to run and consume resources? Are there any known conflicts?
You can try it out. Don't have much experience with sense because I don't like it. But try it out and see what happens

Will it still run? Yes it will still run in the background. You an freeze it with TIBU and that will stop it.
I've been running GO Launcher since about a month after I got the phone. Don't recall ever having any problems with it conflicting. If Sense is still running in the background there hasn't been any noticeable difference in performance or battery life. I did read somewhere that any widgets you have on the Sense home screens will still run/update even if you're using GO. So I just removed all the widgets. Of course, you're not able to use the Sense widgets on the GO home screens but I haven't come across any non-Sense widgets that I couldn't run on GO.
Hi, I want ask if is possible in pre rooted sense rom change sense launcher for Go Launcher Ex. I don't like sense native launcher.
If I install on sense rom GoLauncherEx.... native sense launcher run on background.... It's possible replace native sense launcher with Go Launcher Ex?
Sry for my english...
If you don't want any part of the sense experience, why use a sense ROM? It would just be running in the background using resources.
Sorry if I misunderstand you.

Why not use aosp or aokp? There are no sense launchers running in background

You guys obviously know, that sense is not only the launcher, but also quite a few other tricks and tweaks across the system? I would have to double check, but while You cannot get rid of sense completely, launcher doesn't seem to stay in memory when other is chosen as default action for home button etc.

Yeah i've seen a lot of people add a custom launcher to sense for a lot of reasons. Sense adds a lot of functionality to the ROM and some can't live without the widgets. There may be reasons. But anyway, a custom launcher doesn't require root but i suppose it's good you have it. Just get one from the market and it should work.
However, i don't think it's possible to replace the sense launcher. Sense seems to take a huge impact if you remove a part of it. That is one problem.
EDIT: I've just seen that you can disable the sense launcher by getting an app called SystemApp Remover. The app does cost though but should stop sense launcher from running without removing it. The app you want to disable is Rosie.apk. Make a backup incase and make sure the 3rd party launcher is installed before you do this!!
I suppose Titanium Backup could do the same by freezing the Rosie.apk but you would still have to pay for the pro version.
Once again i'd like to say if you try this, make sure you have a backup and also you install the 3rd party launcher before you freeze it!

Hmm.... maybe I try this.... when will be finished first Sense 4 ROM.... Thanks for response
hmm was thinking about the same thing and exploring the inside of the rom.
is it possible to (1)remove any launcher/app.apk and (2)add in any apps of your own, in system/app ? or it is more complicated than that?
Actually there is a Sense-less WipeOut ROM, the ROM is still based on Sense, but uses ICS-based launcher (can't rmbr whether it is Nova/Apex/trebuchet)..
maybe OP can try that? But mind you that ROM is Sense 4.0A based, so some functions may not be working properly yet (touch to focus camera, WiFi hotspot, etc) but it is stable enough as daily driver..
I hope this is what OP means..
i use apex launcher and have rosie.apk frozen by titanium backup. you can also delete it with root explorer if you want. mind that display personalise settings aren't working any more without rosie or with rosie frozen, so you have to set all those things before you ger rid of it.
well I have tried every launcher on the Android market and found non to my taste..... I like the Sense that comes stock on the Inspire 4g, "BUT" as I was playing around with the Launcher Pro, I really like the "Dock," "Dock background" and the "Transition Effect" the visual effect used when switching between home screens. Is there anyway I can get those just mentioned on to my HTC Sense 2.1? the only reason I don't like Launcher pro is because it does not have alot of widgets like HTC Sense does, any help????? thanks in Advance.

call up HTC. Other than that, you cant get a personalized launcher to that specifics unless you make one yourself. And with sense 4.0 working its way out, you wont see as much development for older sense versions. and each launcher can have tons of widgets, just the main ones dont come with a lot of built in. go and download whatever widgets you want and you can experience the same as sense.
Thank you for your response, but I have finally customized Launcher pro for my needs by keeping it down to 3 screens and utilizing those app and widgets that I use on a daily basis, works out very well.

If you want widgets like sense then try Android Pro widgets. Not free but do a great job of replacing the sense widgets.
If you want a dock and the actual sense widgets then here's a link to the htc one ics/sense 4 rom

Will Nova Launcher work with Edge Sense or is Edge Sense only compatible with HTC's launcher?
You will find that it is most likely tied to HTC sense. So if you were to run say aosp you would lose the feature. Might be tied into the launcher as well as HTC is known for trying to force people to use it

It is not handled by the sense home launcher, I would have seen the code changes. It will run as an additional service by the EdgeSensorService.apk in /system/priv-app.
So I'm 100% sure it is not tied to the sense launcher and will work well on Nova Launcher...Might even work on AOSP when you include that apk.

Yeah it won't work on aosp. As it will need the framework. From HTC just like the rest of their apps.
Not a worry really as this will most likely be one of the few devices that won't be if it from custom roms

HTC Apps are not tied to the "HTC Framework" anymore.
All their former core libs are completely moved into each app now. The central core libaries are gone for a few years now.
Nearly each (could be also every) app functions on their own, without any dependencies. The only htc framework file that is left is com.htc.resources...but that should be just used core system apps, like SystemUI, Settings etc.
That's the reason, why most of the HTC apps are on playstore now, independent of the HTC Device. Also Sense Home is in testing for non HTC phones.
Nova Launcher and Edge Sense work just fine together. I've been using both since this morning when I installed Nova Launcher. I even installed the Nova Companion so I could get Google Now as a slide out option as it is on the Pixel. Everything works just fine.
As far as ASOP .. haven't and won't try that. I find no need to do so. This phone is speedy and quite nice as shipped. It has very little bloatware on it.
