How much is the ETF for T-Mobile? I never really tried, then again I have been out of contract for a long time now, I always pay retail for my phones, ends up cheaper, atleast the way Tmobile does it
I saw it in Tmo's policy, it should be $200 ETF but I don't know if there is a catch in the policy for NEXUS S.

$200 for T-mobiles etf, but I remember something like if you bought the Nexus One subsidized and cancelled (in order to get it cheaper), you would end up paying the $200 termination fee PLUS the difference in price for the Nexus One ($329) for a total of $729
200 (original subsidized price)

Well ive been thinking about this too because i got my nexus one for $212 no contract!
199 + tax
Cancelled t mobile during 14 day grace period $0
Google never set up the etf to charge people, $0
And the most they could have charged was $150 for the etf, so it only equals around $350
BUT is it set up for the nexus S?
Either way im sure you could save a few hundred, im adding a line to my plan i think and doing this!
Best Buy doesn't have their own ETF so why not add a line, then cancel it?

Adding a line would be done through Tmobile. So once you add a line, canceling it would require you to do it by going through Tmobile. In a sense, Best Buy can be thought of as a Tmobile retailer, if that makes it easier. They aren't the actually phone service themselves that can create/cancel lines.
@Sassyness, if you canceled your contract during the remorse period, how was it that they didn't ask for the Nexus One back?
Does anyonoe know if you have to get a data plan with the Nexus S if you purchase it with a contract?
If so, can that data plan ever be canceled later on by calling Tmobile? For example, let's say I wanted to get the Nexus S as a gift, but wanted to save some money. I have a line on my family plan eligible for upgrade, and say I upgrade it with that line, get a data plan, but I give the Nexus S as a gift to someone who will use their own data plan... can I cancel the data plan that I had to purchase on my line which I upgraded with?

Leaving google themselves responsible for getting the phone back or charging a fee.

I was wondering about all the people scamming earlier last years. Wow, I'm surprised google didn't charge you the difference.
Did anyone here about this yet, according to the link, you can get out of your contract from tmobile without paying an early termination fee (I think it is $200 still)
Does anyone want to even leave Tmobile? I was thinking of doing this and then signing up back again to save for a new phone

you can carry "upgrades"? how does that work.
i think that $60 prepaid plan with 2gb of data is very tempting...now the hard part is going to be actually getting them to cancel without the etf.
Try it in April. Rumor is that they are changing the terms for data roaming on April 5th. I got out of an old Cingular contract when they changed some terms that were semi-major and I argued that those weren't the terms I originally agreed to and it nullified my existing contract. Be aware though that technically they don't have to do anything more than likely as phone companies got smarter with their terms and conditions. Just saying though, if you're adamant enough, it's worked before.

My dad owed like $80 on his Even More Plus plan. He wanted to move down to the $30 1500 min Monthly 4g plan. He was told because his account was suspended that he couldn't switch to the new plan without paying off the $80. Then the guy told us he could just sign up for the monthly 4g plan and just deal with a new number. So the $80 bill wasn't wiped out but he still was able to start a new account with T-Mobile. He used all his same info as the previous account.
I still don't understand how his bill was $80 since he was essentially already on a pay as you go plan and his service was shut off the day the month ended for him.
I like T-Mobile. Been with them nearly 10 yrs. I switched from Cingular shortly after they took over our local bell south mobile. I would hate to see anything happen to T-Mobile they have always taken good care of me.

Read the agreement though, I believe that you can't sign back up and receive any subsidies (cheap phones) for a long time. I know that when I switched to their subsidy free plan (Even more plus), they said that there was something like a 6 month time frame after canceling the plan before I could sign up for another plan and get phone subsidies again.
But why would I ever leave T-Mobile? two g2x phones with 2gb each and unlimited talk+text all for under $100 after taxes. I even get another discount for working for a university which is an additional 15% off. I can't get close to this with pre-paid.
Then I go to craigslist and buy my phones from people who think they didn't pay $700 after subsidy payments.
Potentially

That plan is unlimited talk/text with some data. I don't know if $300 is right or not, because I would never sign up for that. But nope there is not. You can call 611 and go from there, but from what I have herd. It's a real pain to get them to fix any thing with billing. I wish at lest two times I knew about a better # for CS, but I don't.
I don't think this plan works with corporate discount's and that may be one of the issue's as well.
Edit: I looked it up and you should only be paying 160+tax+some small fees. They do bill you a one time fee for signing up as well (40-50 per line), So this bill seem's about right even if I do think it's high.
Sorry
Are you a first time Verizon customer? I remember when I got my first smartphone I was charged double for my data plan for the first bill and that was because they charge you a month in advance pretty much to keep their buts safe in case you decide to stop paying your bill.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
Keep in mind, depending on when you sign up, your first bill will have part of the month prorated...
So I have the 2 GB plan, with my SG3 and wifi jetpack, my first bill was $198.
So that broke down with 10 days prorated plus $35 to activate the SG3 (Jetpack I already had) and then the $130 or so for the monthly charge, plus taxes...
Adds up quick...
You guys think I could get them to drop the activation fee or manually put in my discount for the month?

I searched but couldn't find a similar thread.
On my March bill in the Important Information section it says that they are changing the way they calculate taxes and surcharges on premium content:
Tax & Surcharge Base Changes Effective 4/1/13, Sprint will be changing tax systems for charges such as insurance & premium content. This update may cause an increase of taxes and/or surcharges on your bill for these products. For details of taxes & surcharges, visit sprint.com/taxesandfees.
There is a slickdeals post talking about it.
It hasn't shown up on my bill yet, but may on the next bill. The URL they refer you to hasn't been updated since November, so you can't determine if your rates are going up.
Taxes going up isn't a reason/way to cancel, but if they increase the premium service fees in any way then you can cancel without the ETF.
It's worth looking into if you want to drop Sprint for another provider (or just get out of contract to get a new phone).

Correct, which is why you could cancel your contract ETF free.
The question is, what is considered premium content. Is the $10 charge for more a smartphone considered premium?
Also, this may only be regional.I know people in California have been able to cancel already without the ETF.

The phone itself doesn't determine premium or not. Premium features may be items like damage protection, international calling, etc. It almost definitely has nothing to do with what phone you have. It's premium service features.
They don't charge an additional fee for LTE service. They do however charge a fee for Smartphone data service (since smartphones use more data than a traditional cell phone). That may be considered a premium service. If it is, then every Evo 4G LTE owner has an "out" on their contract.

For those talking about the charge on the OG EVO, it wasn't a 4G charge. Ugh. I feel like I'm repeating myself because people don't pay attention and don't care to understand. The $10 charge that Sprint started with the first EVO is a $10 data surcharge for all smartphones because they CAN use more data than a dumb-phone. It has nothing to do with LTE or 4G. It was an excuse Sprint used to increase their data fees while still giving unlimited data.

As for the person mocking me regarding the .36 cent increase and switching to Verizon and paying more. Look, I didn't say you had to switch carriers, it just lets you out of your contract. So cancel and restart under a different name or something, you can get a new phone for the subsidized price. I myself am sick of the crappy service and promise of LTE in my area that never came (was supposed to be second half of last year). Even with my free AirRave, service still sucks.
I too get an employee discount, but I also get a discount with all the other carriers. The ONLY benefit I have with Sprint is the unlimited data. Verizon and AT&T would only cost me $5 more per month with better service, and 4GB of data (we haven't gone over 3GB in the last 4 years).
So, feel free to be an ass and mock me,I don't care. I'm trying to help those who DO want a new phone for $200 instead of $500, or who do want to jump carriers (and get a new phone). To those select few, your welcome and good luck!
I've been following the Slick Deals thread as well as this one also here on XDA. I've already tried calling to see if they know what my personal change will be and, of course, the rep had no idea (she actually didn't even know about the statement on the bill in the first place). My bill comes out on the 10th of each month so I have to wait until then to see the changes and start my full attack.

I'm curious of what you guys/gals think about this:
Currently I'm an AT&T subscriber and I'm planning to switch to T-Mobile.
If I buy the phone from AT&T, it'll equate to: $199 + $14.88 (tax) + $36 (activation fee) = $249
The ETF for AT&T is $325.
$249 +$325 = $574.
Is this something I should pursuit? I know AT&T will unlock the phone if you pay the ETF. Are there any hidden fees or anything else that should stop be from this?
Tax will not be of the 200, that is the subsidized price but taxes have nothing to do with subsidization.
Taxes are applied to the full price of the phone.
Also I don't think Lte will work. I would not pursue it.

Taxes are applied to the full price of the phone.
Also I don't think Lte will work. I would not pursue it.

I think taxes on the full price only apply in California and Rhode Island.
2 other people confirmed their states did too although I don't remember their states.
I would still not recommend it. To save a few bucks you might sacrifice network compatability.

Live in Cali and a few miles away from NV. NV = tax on $199, not crazy California subsidized prices lol.

Awesome work around. My mother lives in Georgia. How do you think it would work renewing my contract online? It probably depends on my credit card zip code right?

If you renew your contract online, they either do by billing address and/or shipping address. I'm pretty sure they go by your billing address that is listed on your carrier contract.
I bypassed the CA taxes with my iPhone 4 by just going to Reno NV and buying the iPhone 4 from the Apple store. Taxed on $199.

You can eliminate all the work by just ordering from Walmart online like I did! $189 will be charged to my card upon shipping! I also did this with the gs3. I also live in the blood sucking state of California!

I live in NV and have always been taxed on the FULL price of the phone, however I've always made my upgrades through AT&T online never in store. Going in store to upgrade to the S4 today so we'll see what the tax is.

really? So you just have to pay a renewal fee and no taxes at all? Can you please double check your statement for me when you get the chance? I'm going to give that a try in June.

You will have to pay the first month of service as well which will be around $90+ taxes. If you return it too soon (14 days I believe) they will just take back the phone with a 10% restocking fee and not charge the ETF so you must keep it AT LEAST 2 weeks.

Total cost of a brand new gs4

Are there any other charges than the ETF bill when you cancel a contract from AT&T?

Honestly I don't know the answer to that. When I said I worked for at&t what i meant was i am a cable maintenance splicer for outside network on at&t core side! So basically I work on all outside network plant including pots, uverse, cell towers.....and everything else basically. So mobility questions like that i would have to ask!

Also add 1/2 month of service & I believe you have to pay tax on the ETF fee.
I don't think they will allow you to terminate your contract without returning the phone unless its after the 14 day return period.

You are correct. I also think their current terms state they no longer prorate, they charge you for the whole first month (plus all the BS fees and taxes). In the end, you can't beat the system.

How about people quit trying to scam the system and just either get an upgrade, OR buy the phone outright?
Honestly threads that discuss ways to scam the telcos should be closed by the mods.
