Im currently using a MyTouch 4G and my return period is about to end. On Dec 3. So i can't keep one and wait for the other.
Should i return it for a Nexus S, which is said to release on Dec 6, or should i keep it.
For this post im assuming the rumors of the Orion processor are true
I bet many of you have this question in mind,
A RAM-filled, Expresso Machine
-OR-
A Dual-Core, Stock God
The main reason im considering comparing the two is because the MyTouch has a very nice build quality, and the pics of the Nexus S suggest that it is a plasticy feel.
Some things i will lay out for you
Screen (Quality & Size)
Nexus > MyTouch
Overall Feel
Nexus < MyTouch
I would appreciate some advice, and thx in advanced
PS: Im waiting to root till i have made my decision

Based on the rumors, the Nexus S appears to be very similar to a Samsung Vibrant, except for the dual-core processor and vanilla Android. As a prior Vibrant owner (we all know about the Galaxy S fiasco), I won't be purchasing any more Samsung phones, regardless of what their specs are rumored to be. HTC, on the other hand, definitely makes solid phones. Even Motorola has produced some impressive offerings over the course of the year (Droid X, Droid 2).
If you're really considering the Nexus S, I highly suggest considering Samsung's reputation and basing your decision on their past missteps. After the disaster with Behold II and Galaxy S, what's to say they won't release another lemon?

Thx for this informative post.
This really is one thing i should consider
I like the MT4G, but it seems to be lacking dev support. I was not happy with the vibrant (lag, gps, battery life, etc.) therefore I have mixed feelings regarding the nexus s just and a little weary because samsung is making it.
MT4G (HTC Glacier) using XDA app.
The MyTouch 4G has great hardware, but lacking the awesome dev support
I'm currently in the same dilemma. I've got until wednesday to remorse my mytouch out. So far, I've been quite happy with the mytouch. I feel like I'd be happy keeping this phone, but I also feel like I'll always be thinking "what if"in the back of my mind.
Anyway, I keep reading that the nexus s will only be sold in stores like best buy.. I'm sure it's too early to tell, but does anyone have any ideas as to how the pricing for the nexus will work.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
I'm in the same boat but my remorse period starts tomorrow.
I love this phone but I've yet to get one without some kind of minor or major defect.
My g1 was perfect, but returned four vibrants and on my fourth my touch. Despite that I think this is a much better phone.
I wish the phone had more dev support, I remember the vibrant ramping up much faster.
The hardware in the sammy should be great, but the bad gps in the galaxy s line scares me. I actually like slcd better for everyday stuff. Next to the my touch, I can really see the blue hue on the samoled screen and the screen door text kills my eyes. Plus, though the blacks are the best, I hate having to have everything black themed to get any battery life on it.
I would say screw waiting on the nexus, but the thought of that amazing hardware paired with google dev support is hard to pass up. It's hard too believe that it will suck since it will be a dev phone. I missed the nexus 1 boat last time. Probably means android will finally be optimized for samsung s guts, instead of just htc, and sammy reduced to brute forcing for performance.
Another thing that makes me want it is that it will be the first of the next gen of phones if it truly has orion in it. From what I read about it, might make tegra 2 obsolete before it comes out.

i have had used a nexus one and that was the only reason i was comparing the nexus s. But ya like all of you have said earlier, samsung cant make 100% solid devices, but the quality of HTC devices r worth trusting
For me, it's all about connectivity... if the Nexus S doesn't have HSPA+, I'm keeping the MT4G.
Even if the no HSPA+ radio is true, I honestly don't see that being a deal-breaker. I live in an HSPA+ area and I average about 2.5-3mbps which is the exact same as a non HSPA+ T-Mo phone in the same area. The only difference is the non HSPA+ phones won't go above 7.2 mbps but so far neither can I so that's a non-issue for me.
Coming from an Evo, I agree with the comments about the dev scene being scarcer than other phones (but the few we do have are really stepping up).
I am taking the stance that I am keeping my MT4G thru remorse, and waiting to see what people's response to the Nexus S after its out for a couple weeks is. At that point I can still ebay/craigslist my MT4G for most of what it's worth right now anyway and get the Nexus S if it ends up being the end all be all.
At this point I would rather know I have a reliable, awesome phone that might be a tad light on the dev side than a potentially big samsung flop phone.

Ditto.
I love this phone! Had the G1, skipped the G2 for this (wanted front cam).
I LOVE the build of this phone and hopefully the dev will come soon.
I think I'm going to stick with the MT4G.
I loved my nexus one!!!!! but i love my MT4G better cause of the front facing camara...but i did like the look and feel of the my samsung vibrant....so i just might have to go with the Nexus S.
Something to consider:
With all of the purported hardware improvements, and state-of-the-art inclusions, haven't they still seen fit to omit an led for notifications, and a trackball/track pad, for navigating through text and so forth?
It would be a shame if you had a Ferrari of a phone, that had to rely on NoLED to let you know when you had a missed call or text.
Just my .02
The Mytouch 4G is an excellent piece of hardware. I have good reception, no problems with the GPS, the screen is very responsive and the battery life is amazing. I could care less about Gingerbread too. What do you want with the newest Android version when your phone may have severe hardware flaws. I don't trust Samsung neither their hardware nor their software. I had an HTC N1 the newest android version couldn't help covering the several hardware flaws this device had. I am glad that I found a good piece of hardware.
Mine (MT4) is on the way and I am supposed to receive it in 2 days.
I go for MT4 this time because I need the trackpad and wifi calling, and I may get NS 3 months later.

It looks like the GPS issues were addressed:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/28/samsung-nexus-s-reappears-at-the-fcc-with-a-pair-of-new-antennas/
I think the Nexus S has enough potential that I would wait to see the end result before committing to the MT4G (or any other phone for that matter). You have to remember that Google is probably closely involved in the project which may result in more quality control than usual (see antenna replacement for example). I'm also intrigued by the Near Field Communication chip. If the Nexus S ends up living up to it's hype the dev support will probably be awesome. If it doesn't you can always go back to your phone of choice.
I ended up returning my MT4G before the end of my remorse period (which is 30 days if you buy it full price from a t-mobile store and not online). For those who can't go back to your old phones just remember that BestBuy and RadioShack both have 30 day return policies with no restocking fees
I will most likely get the Nexus S even though I've had the worse experience with Sammy and the Vibrant, simply because I cant say no to the 2nd generation, of the best phone ever made running on dual core.
I just ordered the MyTouch 4g today though, while I wait for reviews on the Nexus. I just had enough of this not so very MOD/DEV friendly phone they call the Vibrant. aka (My Piece of Shyet Phone) lol
Although I love the SAMOLED, the size, camera, and the look of the Vibrant. The software side, the random freezes and the need for Lag and GPS fix (That never really worked) just made it a BIG disappointment.
I know it might be wishful thinking with Sammy being the maker of the Nexus S, but since it will be a Google flagship device, I could only hope for better support and quicker updates than the Galaxy S series.

Maybe a little premature to assume this?
Hi everyone,
I'm pretty satisfied with my Captivate, but it has become a bit boring. Also, I don't like the unofficial ROMs because they come with their own share of problems and they get updated way too often for me to keep up with new releases. My friend from a foreign country happens to REALLY want a Captivate and is willing to buy me a Nexus S or G2 for it. I thought this way pretty cool but now I'm in the dilemma of choosing which one I want. Just so you know, I'm not changing my mind about switching the Captivate, as I just want something new badly. I am aware that I won't be able to use 3G on any of the phones as T-Mobile phones use different frequencies, and if you can tell me how this would affect me (light web browsing in car, tweets, facebook, XDA) that would be great.
G2: I really like the physical keyboard on the device and the device feels really upraised in the community for it's modifiability. This is something I really like in the device. Also, the device comes with Froyo, and I like the look and feel of stock Froyo more than anything else, even Gingerbread. Some of my concerns are the crappy HTC headphones that the phone comes with. I know it may be a stupid concern, but I really like listening to music a lot on the road. The headphones with the Cappy are ideal and I really like them. If anyone knows any good headphones on the cheap that are similar to the Galaxy S ones, please give me a link. Also, I'm afraid that this phone is already phased out by Google since it still hasn't gotten a Gingerbread update.
Nexus S: This phone is SEXY. I really like the black design with the huge Google logo, so the design really has me hooked onto this one. I also really like the fact that this comes with a front facing camera and a camera flash (even though idk when I'm gonna want to use either of those, the fact that's it's there is nice). Also, this phone has really good headphones like the Galaxy S line. I'm just really worried that this phone isn't much better than my phone at all. In fact, the absence of 3G I think is going to make it a step backwards. The active Google support is nice too, but I really wish that the G2 was the Dev phone, not this. The G2 has some of the key features that Samsung for some reason hates like a keyboard, trackpad, and notification light. I'm scared that all of these useful pieces of hardware are going to get phases out all because Google let Samsung make the next Nexus. I could care less about Gingerbread really. It doesn't feel like too much of a step forward and I don't like the slick black design as much as the accustomed bright colors. I know it sounds weird, but it's true.
So, if anyone can help me out it would be great. Thanks.
I thought the Nexus S was Just a Captivate in a different housing.
The only difference is the front facing camera, I think.

Hmmm, I think you're better off asking people in the G2 and Nexus S forums.
The G2 is very slow and laggy, even though it gets higher benchmarks, my friends G2 lags like crap compared to my captivate and my friends vibrant.
I think a lot of those benchmarks are just a bunch of BS written for the Scorpion and Snapdragon processors because his G2 with nothing loaded on it is very slow.
HTC G2. It is a HTC, has good build quality and I really like the keyboard. Plus, it runs AOSP Froyo, and I'm sure you can get an international ROM with Sense on it.
The Nexus S is more of the same with the Captivate, just with a working GPS, a FFC, and 2.3 AOSP. I would guess that Captivate development would eventually reach this stage sans FFC anyway.

I would seriously disagree, my friends G2 lags all the time.
At least with the Nexus S you'll get 2.4 when it comes out right away also. And devices have been spotted with devs using 2.4 on Android Central.
Def go with the Nexus S. Better hardware and better software support. The only reason to go with a G2 over the Nexus S is if you can't stand not having a physical keyboard, and since you own a Captivate I'm going to guess thats not a big deal.
+1 Nexus S

Get a G2. I got it and I love it. Switched from Captivate too. I am done with Samsung, therefore I refused to get a nexus S. Since the nexus is the latest and greatest, it may cure the updating problems that samsung has, but I have reason to believe from experience with samsung devices that it will come with hardware issues, if not now then later.
I have had 0 problems with my G2. I'm running GingerVillian on it. I have the proc OC'd to a max of 1.5 ghz. I have no lag whatsoever. I love my physical keyboard, the trackpad is useful, I don't have to hack to get backlit notifications. I don't have to hack to get tethering, I don't have to hack to sideload, I don't have to hack to get the full market.
The root is a little more involved than I'd like it to be, but nothing beyond my comprehension.
If by hardware and software support you mean "Release a newer version of the phone with the same hardware and updated software 2 months after initial release", then yes, you are correct, it does have better hardware and software support.

Hi all,
I currently have a nexus one, and am debating on whether I should upgrade and if so, what to. I am limited to ATT but my contact is up so I can take advantage of discounts w/ new contract.
I have liked my nexus one because it is:
-well built, nice looking
-free of att crapware
-allows me to tether
-vanilla android OS (currently cm7 because ICS and JB are just too slow and buggy on it)
I dislike my nexus one because:
-the keyboard is garbage. I dont know whether it is the specific touchscreen, or the screensize, but sometimes I have a hard time typing on it
-still running GB, ICS and JB just feel slow on it.
I wonder if a bigger screen may help me see more (ie. since right now the keyboard takes up a majority of the screen when it is out) and make typing easier. But a bigger screen seems a little harder to wield with one hand...
I had been looking at both the samsung s3 and htc 1x, but want the stock android experience (no touchwiz or sense junk. I realize I may need to wait a little bit of time for roms to be developed, which is OK). I know that the xperia ion and atrix hd have similar specs, but for whatever reason I had not really considered them options. Basically, I see pros and cons to both the 1x and s3, some of which are my opinion:
1x Pros:
-great build
-great screen
1xCons:
-power button can be hard to reach
-not expandable memory
s3Pros:
-expandable
-maybe better power button placement
s3Cons:
-cheap plastic, cheap looks
-easy to press volume keys when pressing power
However, I suppose the biggest requirement I have is that I want the ability to run a clean, stable, vanilla ICS or JB rom (cyanogenmod, or ASOP would be great). Here are my questions(finally!):
1. which phone will (or does) have more hacker development?
2. I assume that given the correct stock software on the 1x, both will be just as easy to hack?
3. I am not against a phone with a smaller screen, but I do want one that has plenty of power...
4. Any other thoughts for me to consider?
THANKS!
For stock rom you're going to want the S3 for sure. HTC phones are known for being littered with issues on ship, most of which only being bearable/solvable through root and rom installation. Even flashaholics find themselves sticking to stock on the S3, TW5 just works wonders, and has got a ton of great features. The development on the S3 is no doubt much better than the One X, I'm not sure why it matters though if you're sticking to stock. The cameras on both I hear are fantastic, and they're both using Krait S4 chips. Again, on S3's side the battery life is unparalleled, 6 hours of screen time is the rumor going around It really doesn't look cheap, but that's just me. Get what you want, those are my opinions though. Good luck

Just wanted to be clear you understood me when I said "stock". I am referring to vanilla android ICS or JB, NOT the Sense/Touchwiz-modified versions...does the s3 still present a better alternative here?
On a side note, is there a good, fast, alternative with all the above requirements in a slightly smaller form factor? maybe something between my n1 and the s3?
You might want to check out the Atrix HD. It got great reviews and is said to provide a "near" vanilla experience.

Well that phone is tempting, but it seems as though its battery life is not as good as the one x or s3.
I know that there are custom roms on the onex and s3 now, any way to judge which is "easier" to port/work with? this may give me an idea as to which will have more development for it in the future.
Well I know that in the past there were similar questions and threads but they were general discussions. Anyway I need some opinions and here is my question. I'm a proud owner of HOS S4 and I m really content with it. But our firm gives us SGS3 (International). In the end, I'll pick one of these phones and will give the other to my wife
Because of build quality, general performance, size etc. I would prefer HOS. Because it was also my choice over SGS3 when I first bought it. But there is two things thingles in my mind
First: I intend to use the phone for 2-3 years. When you look from hardware perspective, which one of these phone, do you think, will technologicaly endure more, after, lets say, 2 years?
Second: I never used although tempted by ability to use two apps in split screen on SGS3. But I don't have experience about what it is like in real world. Is it a dealbreaker? Do you think it can be a reason to choose SGS3 over HOS?
Thanks for your opinions.

As far as build quality... I've never owned an S3 but I had an S2 that cracked RIGHT OPEN because it's made of plastic... I believe the S3 is as well, right? The HTC One S has the clear advantage when it comes to the physical shell. Metal beats plastic any day for me... The S3 is better hardware wise, the international is quad-core tegra if I'm not mistaken but I'd still pick the HOS S4 myself.
1. When the one S struggles, the GS 3 will struggle, there is nothing that either phone will struggle with in 2 years time apart from some more demanding games probably.
Just look at the GS 2 and GN, both still perform very well (granted the one S and GS 3 feel quicker in general stuff but the difference isn't as vast, thanks to jellybean) yet their hardware is inferior to both and they are what? 2 years old now? And I can see both doing well for another year.
2. Up to you really, I think it is a cool feature, however, when I think about it, I would very rarely use it, now on a note II, then things would be different due to the screen size. Besides you can get apps on the market, which allows you to multi-task in a similar way such as over skreen:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...vbS5teWJveWZyaWVuZGlzYWdlZWsuYWlyYnJvd3NlciJd
The main thing that I would look at though is software updates, which will be supported for longer and how quick will the updates be delivered? Unfortunately too hard to say, although Samsung are very slow when it comes to their phones which are no longer number 1....
Saying that, no company has commented on 4.2 yet and the next android version (KLP) is due in May and if it is as big as what ICS was, then chances are you are going to be waiting 9+ months anyway regardless of what phone you stick with.
And no, the international is not tegra, but exynos, S4 chipset is still better overall.
Also, phones might be plastic, however, that doesn't necessarily mean that they will have poor durability. Aluminium phones are usually more likely to damage due to them not "absorbing" the shock as well. The GS 2 is one of the most durable smartphones, GS 3 isn't, because the glass extends right to the edge so the one S would be more durable than the GS 3. At the end of the day, it comes down to luck and where/how the phone lands.

I'm a proud owner of a HOS S4, rooted and all! Problems I HAD with my phone were before I rooted it. One major issue with the HOS is that my connectivity was really BAD, barely 1G indoors! This was, however, the only problem.
As far as I know the s3 does not have such problems (maybe other kinds, I don't know). It has superior hardware and capabillities though.
So my opinion: if you're not rooting the HOS go for the s3. If you ARE rooting, stick to the HOS, best device for customization
Sent from my One S
The HOS is an excellent device. Plain and simple.
For the 2nd question... I dont think its a dealbreaker... I think the screens on a phone is too small to fully enjoy such a feature.
Had it been a tablet in question here, then I would probably be quite interested in that feature myself.
The S have plenty of power, so switching apps isnt really such a big issue as it can be on slower devices.
Thanks for all your opinions. You helped to strengthen my heartily decision. I ll keep my dear HOS.

Its all the same, nevertheless. I find nexus 6P more elegant and unique, thus the reason buying it because theres so many people with samsung devices, even low class people which just filters out its uniqueness and its price tag making it look worthless outside. What are your opinions? If your on Samsung S6/Edge/+, would you have the need to upgrade to an device such as Samsung S7?
EDIT :
I've posted an explanation as to what low class in this instance means. forgive me if it had you in any way, i was never trying to make any of you owners sad, its just that for so many, they have this phone and it just gets rid of its status 'elegant'. Elegant is ment to be beautiful, stylish. But when everyone has this 'elegant' phone, where does the definition exist of being stylish?
EDIT2:
I love the samsung edge because its invention of curve screen. I've even had friends give them to me to try for an hour or so. The thing is that, i don't like people having the same phone as me. I was about to get the nexus 5x but one of my friends got it, so i went ahead with nexus 6p. But that doesnt mean that i would get another new phone if someone else has the same phone as me because that would be regarded as wasting money.
I agree I'm in a bond my Samsung smartphone if I should get the new one must have something waw and cool and interesting
I got my Galaxy S phone to be different from everybody else.
Then I got my Galaxy S4/S5 because they were simply the best.
Samsung is neither unique or the best anymore so...
Nexus6p stands strong in Android market . I hope Samsung won't compete to beat n6P with bloatware and bla bla. Hail nexus6p
After living with the LG G4 for a couple weeks, I'll be sticking with Samsung, if for no other reason that I FAR prefer the Home/capacative buttons that Samsung offers compared to the on screen buttons that all the other major makers use. Plus, I like Samsung's screens the best, & they are always at or near the top in camera, performance, etc. Custom ROMs take care of the bloat. Now, Samsung isn't perfect, & I am very disappointed by their removal of SD & replaceable battery, which is why I'm still hanging in there with my S4, which I had planned to replace with the S6. It looks like the SD is coming back, which will be probably be enough for me to go with the S7. If the S7 had replaceable battery, it would be a slam dunk for me. Despite the G4 having those features, it's size & button arrangement (including the power & volume) made it an overall less preferable unit to me than my aging S4.
I agree with the OP, my next device will be a Nexus one.
Not going to upgrade/downgrade from the note 4. But it will interesting to see if Samsung has learned something and if they will put the removable battery and a micro sd card back into their phones.
But yeah real buttons will always beat out in screen ones
So no one have an issue with this person stating even "low class" people have a Samsung?...Obviously not.

If you can afford it buy Galaxy S7 or just buy some chinese Android phone.
But I definitely like to have microSD card back on Galaxy S7
You sound pretentious and terrible. Just because a company sells their product successfully does not make them worse. They're still using top of the line, listening to consumers by reinstating the microSD slot. You're not special because you have money to buy better products. If you wanna be so "different" go buy an iPhone. You have the same mindset as an apple fanboy.
Like most phones, upgrading every year isn't very appealing because there's only so much that can be improved. I wouldn't upgrade from a Galaxy S6. But I certainly will from my S5 Sport!

Really, low class? Well you are the Messiah so I guess everyone is low class to you.
I agree with some of you, I don't seen the point of upgrading every year, there isn't a big enough difference between each years models. I don't mind iPhone once they are jailbroken, I have an iPhone 4 that has been through hell and back with me and still kicking. I have been through a kyocera slide I got stuck in boot loop and bricked a HTC desire. Now have an LG G3 that I love and haven't had any problems. If your going from a device that that is a couple models older and is going obsolete then upgrade, but most of us don't have the money laying around to to by a new phone every year.
Have they even set a release date for the Galaxy D7 yet?
By low class, you have to understand that i am not defining those who have samsung as lower class. its your choice to have it or not. but the thing is that wherever i go, everywhere! people have got either samsung or apple in their hands and to me it feels like its just too many. it just destroys its elegancy and its price tag. i don't know how to explain but I hope i cleared some misconceptions
Not usually one to post, but you're not helping yourself any with your explanation. You still come off as elitist, shallow, and rather petty to be honest.
Who cares how many people have a phone? Are you going to tell me an iPhone isn't nice because millions of people have one? Or that the Galaxy series is suddenly not one of the best phones, simply because more people have it?
I dunno if this is going to be breaking news to you, but with contract subsidies and pricing offers and various discounts, even the most expensive of smartphones are a relatively cheap luxury item. With the modern reliance on cellphones, and mobile data, of course having a good phone is going to be something most people will spend a few extra dollars on. Is it really a newsflash that people want the best? Or did you not consider that most people are flocking to the Galaxy series, and the iPhone lineup, because they have a longstanding legacy of being two of the best, powerhouse smartphones available.
Furthermore.. elegance? Really? They're phones, not watches. They're consumption devices that have increasingly more and more uses.. not just little gadgets people get, to show off how rich or awesome they are. Only the geekiest of the geeks have a nerdgasm about how much more elegant their phone is than the average person. The rest of us standard model geeks would rather just enjoy our phones as the tools that they are, and try to find the one that works best for us.
Well done, ThePheonixChameleon. I totally agree, although what do I know, I'm an inelegant, low-class owner of a Galaxy S4, no less.
There is no need to get a Samsung devuce, because there is OnePlus out there...
I was a great fan of Samsung devices, and I'm still are. But now I have two OnePlus devices and I'm very satisfied with them. So I won't get any other device for now and the near future.

Ehh, I just picked up my fourth rooted Galaxy S3 off Swappa. Still clinging to that antique, cliche phone.. with it's plastic case and inelegant awesomeness that made it the only phone anyone wanted of it's generation.
I currently own a Galaxy S5 Sport. Great phone, but the first thing I did was flash CM12.1, waiting for CM13. Touchwiz is a piece of ****. Samsung phones are so much better than one would think if you get rid of the garbage stock ROM. I'm not just speaking aesthetically, the performance is atrocious. It's so smooth and never hangs up now, also doesn't force close when trying to do something intensive and the RAM management is much better!

Totally agree. I also had a SGS5 before I exchanged it with the OnePlus Two. I tried a lot of different Rom's. The very best I flashed on it was AICP. I was very satisfied with that Rom. Maybe you will try it out.
