My contract recently expired and I am looking to upgrade. My question is, is the 2gb Data plan enough to support the Infuse, Atrix, or Inspire? I have read the other thread on this question, however all the responses were about getting unlimited data. I would get it but, being in school, i cant justify/afford the cost of buying an iPhone 2g. I have been looking for a fellow friend or developer in my area to lend me theirs but I am looking to get the new phone in a week or two.
So, in general, is the 2gb plan enough?
My day during the year, 8-3, classes, no major usage, mabey 30 mins internet.
4-10 moderate usage, mabey up to 1 hour usage. Internet, mabey an app or two, and possible Pandora a day or two a month. Tethering mabey 20 mins max 3 days a week or less. weekends, moderate usage, internet sparingly all day, mabey 1:00 max. Summer is similar to weekends.
What is the general opinion? Or personal experience.

depends on you. i typically use 500mb but depending on what you do on the internet and how often you are on wifi you might want the tethering plan. the good news is that the overages are fair. $10 would be added to your bill for the third gb and each after that so you dont need to micro manage your use. infact 4 gb on the 2gb plan is the same price as the 4gb tethering plan so you really only want the 4gb plan if you tether and dont want to root or find off market apps or if you use over 5gb
Definitely not i used a gig in a week and i have 500 mb left. But i probably do more than you haha

With only 2GB to work with, you'll probably need to make sure you're connected to wifi as much as possible.
I've used about 500MB in the past week. I'm on wifi at work and at home.
2gb wouldnt work for me. my home internet sucks and im getting speeds between 3 and 4 times it on my phone. doing app updates and watching youtube would have to be on wifi if i did. not even sure what else but i always seem to reach about 2.5 to 3gb a month.
There are this 2 months I have used 15gb+ because uverse sucks, but still just pay $30. But now we are on comcast I used less than 10gb a month. I always turn off my wifi unless I'm home.

not sure why my phone is using so much data, but i opened the myatt app and im only one day into the billing cycle and ive already used 1gb of data. 0 minutes, 0 messsages, thousands of megabytes. yeah i could never do with anything but unlimited data.
I don't censor my usage and I only use about 1600 MB.

I dont see it as a big issue. If you go over, you spend an extra $10 for another GB... At least they are not charging you for every MB over!
Its a non issue. Get the 2GB, if you go over, you spend more. and if you go over twice, your still only paying the same amount as the 4GB plan with tethering...
Its not like you have an unlimited plan option here...
a certain other carrier had to eliminate there limited data plans recently because there overages are too high, they also had to steal the billing structure from the iphone and the iphone to be sure to steal as many att customers as posible. at least att is realistic enough to know that when you go over in a 30 day period you dont go over by a few magabytes very often. it is better to accept the $10 for a small amount of data than pay the $50+ dollars you are likely to spend on verizon!
If you use your phone as a go to device for all your sufing needs then 2gb isnt much. Im on my 5 day of the billing cycle and im already at 2.1 gb

I live in Florida and used Pandora a good amount of time during my drive to N Carolina and back as well as my Google Maps, and didn't get anywhere near the 2gb. I'm on my phone most of the day at work (730-4) and use the browser, Facebook app, and various other data using apps. The only problem you might run into is the tethering imo.

Totally enough, even with your usage. I have the same plan and I am a pretty heavy user day to day, I read xda for about 3 hours a day maybe watch like 4 YouTube vids, engadget app, Facebook, stream Pandora for like an hour... and yet the past 3 months I can only get up to using about 1. 5 Gigs.... trust me its enough

Can't you upgrade and keep your unlimited plan if you allready have unlimited I have upgraded more than ones and still have my unlimited data its grandfathered in if I had 2 gb cap I would had been over by 5 gb this mounth just think if you installed a rom its one third of a gb if you use the phone
Mr.Nun.Ya
it is enough, i use my phone all day and when i get the bill, its nowhere near 2gb.
Unlimited plans make you feel warm and fussy because you always know you won't go over. If you are aware of how you use the internet you will be fine. Me, I turn off my mobile network religiously it save massive battery life and all the apps that want to update can't. (if its in my pocket I don't care about someones facebook update) Second I use WiFi when I can: its free, normal much faster, I do not have 4g but I do have a 10m connection at home and a larger one @ the university I work at.
If you every want to check how much data you have used use this number and it will show you your data usage; *3283#
If you check that once a week you will never go over, or you can use an app like 3g Watchdog Pro(or lite) which is absolutely amazing...it shows you how much dat\ you used that day/week/month...it predicts how much you will use by the date you will be billed based on your current usage, calculates how much data you can use a day for the whole month without going over, it is a very nice app/widget to have
2gb DAta Plan
I constantly go over and I have 4gb, but I also am traveling and tether. Since I never had AT&T until now I was told I am not able to get unlimited which I think is stupid.
That's crap if I had a cap with att I would move to Verizon they have. no cap and the thunderbolt I don't no why you guys think it alright you probably think its OK to pay extra to tether how I use my data is my business its just a way to squeese more money from you
Mr.Nun.Ya
I also have the 2gig data plan, I have not came close to my limit at all. I am on my phone all the time, at least my wife says. The close I came to was 1 gig, that was re-downloading all of my google apps, before I swtich over to my WIfi.
I never use Wifi- because my broadband connection is slower than my ATT connection on the phone. Ihave an older unlimited data plan, and I use 7-8G in a typical month.
Verizon
I was told and have read on several websites that Verizon will be dropping the unlimited data plans and adopting a tiered system like AT&T. If you have your unlimited with AT&T right now, find a 3g smartphone that is acceptable and keep your unlimited. I made the mistake of not doing that and regret it. I do however really like my Inspire.
Lol I never had unlimited but I did what was posted and I use about 4gbs a month and have unlimited now

I've had unlimited data since the day after I got my first PPC (LG Incite). I was able to keep it through my upgrade to the eXpo and my shiny new Inspire. I have always paid $30/month and have used more than 2 gb every month with my highest just over 6.

Mine is 2GB and always well below the limit line. Sometimes I wished there was this 1GB plan
Ok so tomorrow I am getting a Sensation ($300 on Craigslist) and I was pondering switching to the new
2 GB ($59.99 mo) unlimited value plan.
Currently with the Mytouch 4G, even with a lot of wifi hotspotting, I've only gone over 2GB of data
once in 3 years, and just barely then.
I currently have the unlimited loyalty plan from 2008 for 74.99.
But that only includes 400 texts (unlimited calls and 5GB data).
Problem is the past 6 months I've been averaging a 200+ overage of texts at .10 cents each.
But now with this new phone I'm wondering if the data usage will increase.
If so I may switch to the 79.99 unlimited loyalty 5GB plan.
It will still be cheaper but not as much of savings of course.
So let me inside your data usage and help me make a good decision.
I dont root or any of that stuff, and I dont do Netfix or anything like that.
I just got my data plan today. I mostly use it for facebook, xda app, a little internet surfing and I use about 20mb a day. I don't think ill gp over 2gb lol

It all depends on how you use your phone. I barely ever stream video, never use hotspot, but am always on the internet and I have never gone over 2 GB.

I was in the same position as OP in regards to losing my old 5GB limit, but in the end I went with the new plan with a 2GB limit. I had never gone over 2GB b/c when I'm at home I usually do everything via WiFi. If you have only gone over once I wouldn't worry about it too much unless you feel you'll be doing more data intensive work on the Sensation.
"Android Preferred Data Plan"
I currently have unlimited loyalty calls for $49.99 and Android400 data for $24.99.
I think that was the original Android data plan I got with the G1 on the pre-buy.
I was just looking at :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192020
and the "Android Preferred Data Plan" for $20.00.
I am thinking I am going to keep calling them till they give me that.
That will lower my bill by $5.00 and stop the text overages while keeping
the 5GB soft cap.
Thanks guys !
I have the 5GB android preferred plan from Tmo and i hit about 3GB - 4GB a month
I Find it hard to use 2Gb Data...in the previous 10 months I have only exceeded 300Mb once.
However I managed to download my entire Evernote database via 3G by accident, so this month will be another exception.
Usually on WiFi, but I use up around 1-2 GB a month.
only had the sensation ~2 months, and i use about 1gig a month so far.
I have 5g for $20 android preferred data plan...
*how much to hot spot since i have extra...i could kill the home internet/wifi
Apart from Wifi...i use Friendstream, FB, XDA, Gmail(regularly with attachments) and some updates for weather & sometimes Market as well and a little bit browsing...very little. All this never exceeds 500 Mb per Month.... because thats my plan too, may be i try to use it less...
I have not had the need to use the hotspot function yet, but can see that this will be an excellent way to consume my bandwidth quota.

As long as you stay away from streaming video via 4g, data shouldn't be an issue for most people.
Streaming video though I use about 5-20 Gb/month with Netflix and Youtube.
You seem to be asking 2 questions here, so I'll weigh in on part 2. Regarding text's, why not sign up for a plan with no texts at all, and use google voice? Drops $10 off your bill, at the expense of no picture messages. I've got 2 phones on a family plan for only $100. Hard to beat.
I've had the Charge since day 1, transitioning from one rom to another and finally aquired 4g back on the 20th of Oct. Since then I've managed to use 114GB of data and my bill cycle ended on the 25th of this month. Just wondering if anybody has managed to use this much data in a months time and if verizon is trying to charge extra for going over 100GB?

You are definitely going to have your account reviewed. That much data usage in a month is nearly impossible on a phone, so they will try to determine if you are tethering.
holy gigabytes batman! I've used less than 200 MB over the past 3 months combined.
Most ive hit was 40GB and nothing happened. 100 is WAY to much for just roms bro, you got to be doing some tethering.
I know I do, thats how I hit 40GB and thats streaming HQ content.
Holy Data Usage Batman! (Sorry, I had to say that LOL)
I barely use 2 GB a month, only once did I reach 2.5 GBs. And that's with streaming music in the car and occasional web browsing.
I hate to say this but people like you, using 100 GBs, is why Verizon got rid of the Unlimited Data plans.
My data abuse record is 50 gb, and that was torrenting almost every night.

I myself average 10-15gb a month, not tethering. I stream Netflix during my lunch breaks though too. Still, most people sound like they are averaging far more than the current cap in place. I don't know what I'm going to do when they start phasing out the grandfathered in people.
Wow, well now I know who all to blame when everyone on Verizon gets pushed into the tiered data plan.
I use my phone for a lot of stuff that uses data. I even tether but only when I'm not around an internet source. I stay below 2 to 2.5GB every month.
Ya I'm definitely not trying to be a data hog but I do download alot of bluray movies off torrents (5-7gb a pop) and Rage the game was 18Gb by itself. I usually only use about 40 but somehow I got carried away this month. 4g I definitely worth it

Most they'll probably do is throttle you (at this point its safe to assume you are in the top 5% data users if not the #1) to 3G speeds or lower. Now if you do it multiple times, then I'd be worrying
Just buy the tether plan if you are using that much IMO. It is still saving you money in the long run over a high speed home connection and it would alleviate the worry of getting forced into tiered data by Verizon.
Meh, I've seen a bill over 425GB.
I'm thinking the top 5% throttling mechanism will keep the network stable enough to keep us on our grandfathered plans. I'd hate to be wrong, I average 6 or 7GBs or so myself.
Verizon seems to be great at coming up with ways to keep the network bandwidth usage in check:
1. Network Optimization- http://support.verizonwireless.com/information/data_disclosure.html
2. Top 5% Throttling - http://www.intomobile.com/2011/09/19/verizon-starts-throttling-top-5-data-users/
3. Turbo API - http://www.theverge.com/2011/11/2/2...er-data-turbo-api-to-developers-fees-to-users
4. ??
5. Profit!
The most I used in 1 month was 15gb. That was watching a lot of Netflix. I probable average 4gb most months.

I don't understand the idea of:

I'm thinking of making the switch over to Att because of sprint's lack luster speeds and I was wondering if anyone is having issues staying under the data cap? I currently have unlimited data but I don't use my phone much anymore because i am usually either roaming or having sub 150k speeds.

The 2gb datapro plan is a good amount of data if you dont use netflix or slingplayer. You can use youtube but not too much. I recommend just getting a used ebay tmobile phone and using it with walmarts tmobile cheapo $50 plan. Then root the phone to remove the "4g" throttle. Or get the $30 walmart plan if you use less then 100 minutes or only use voip apps.
I'm 20 days into my first real billing month and have used only 546MB of my 2GB plan. At home and at work I have wifi, so my only data usage would be on the road. My significant data usage comes from streaming music on my way to work and going back home. That's about 45 minutes total, maybe a few minutes less sometimes, of constant streaming. I don't run any updates or download/install apps while out on the road. I also do some browsing and streaming music during the weekend too while I'm out of the house. I don't think I will reach 1GB this month...
What has you average been on sprint? You can see it online in billing. I have been on art since august after years with sprint and the difference was night and day. I use a ton of data though so I was fortunate that one of the existing lines on the family plan I joined had unlimited data

Keep in mind...going over just means they charge you $10 and give you another gb ...it isn't the end of the world and you have access to your usage at all times thus you can adjust if need be

Although I have an unlimited plan, I follow my data usage. For a typical billing period, I use something between 3 and 4 GB of data. I am a moderate user, mostly checking the web and email and hardly any streaming.
Make yhd switch you wont regret it. Internet on hspa+ or Lte is blazing fast compared to sprint. Had sprint since 07 left about 2 months ago. Last month my usage was 1.4 Gb. Normal internet usage really doesn't use that much data. And being unlimited is kind of overrated when your speeds stink.

I have unlimited data on a network that CAN handle heavy data easily, and I take advantage of that.

At this rate, it'll be about 3GB.... wow.
I though it'd be more then that, I'm actually trying to get throttled for a test...... time to download the entire Adobe Master CS5 collection on LTE.

Not when you have unlimited data. They just throttle your speed.
Last month I was throttled at about 3.5gb and I ended up at 14gb by the end of the month. This was my protest for being throttled. Mind you, the last 7 months usage I usually do 3.5-4gb.
This month I got my 5% warning and im sure will be throttled within the next few days. When that happens I plan to do 100gb
Will AT&T cancel my account ? is this a stupid way to protest? What do you guys think?
Tbh, I think my last month raised the top 5% because this month I got my first warning at 3.8gb…last month my first warning was at 3.2 and i was throttled at 3.5
No, I don't think they will because everytime you get close to the threshold you'll be throttled. I had a very long and wasteful talk with one of their representative.
Throttled at GB and 13 days left. So far I have used more than 15 GB thanks to the APN switch. I don't care I am paying for unlimited data so nobody can tell me otherwise. AT&T can throttle my speed all they want but unlimited data is what we are paying for. Thank god for APN switch.
I am just trying to figure out how you guys can consume that much data each month. Are your phones streaming videos and music 24x7 or something? I am just curious as to what a typical day of use would be for you.
I also have unlimited data but I barely use 2GB's per month cause most places have wifi now and if I am out of the house with the family or friends, I TRY not to keep my face buried in my phone.
As far as your method of protest (@waiters), I personally think it IS stupid if you are going that far simply because they are throttling you. Just because you CAN do a thing, doesn't mean you SHOULD do a thing. Just my opinion.
But as you stated, you are guaranteed unlimited data, so have fun...
First of all to everyone ,
i haven't gotten my skyrocket yet until friday, but im sure its the same with the iphone .iv been with an iphone since 07 when it was first released , luckily i one of them in a handful that HAD the unlimited plan until last month . ATT will not cancel your data plan , they will just apply you with a new data plan (4gb a month) . i was warned months before my plan got changed . first started with sms from att then emails and lastlly and sms&email notifing me with the change.
so long story short ,ATT will just change your plan .most likely to you will get 4gb a months and 10$ after each gb .
BTW my choice to switch to android after so many years after being loyal apple customer was nothing more then to try out other operating systems Oh and 4G . especially after being disappointed of the iphone4s which wasnt much of a change from the iphone4. Dont get me wrong IOS is and wonderful system ,very user friendly . lets hope android turns good for me too as its community. Any tips or redirection to great forums like this one will be greatly appreciated
I upload a ton of pics and vids of the family...download roms..stream pandora and stream slingbox in the car or at restaraunts. I also tend to sit and watch youtube for hours at work. the wife and i average about 4gb a month each. we ise wifi when home
The real problems I have are that
1. last month i was throttled after being on vacation for three weeks ...so yeah heavy data usage
2. if we go out of town and have heavy data usage the first weekend of the month...bam...throttled for the rest of the month...super lame to be throttled because we used "more" than whoever they are comparing us to at the beginning of the cycle.
3. every notification I have received has been within an hour of streaming slingbox .. Seems fishy

This month I got my 5% warning and im sure will be throttled within the next few days. When that happens I plan to do 100gb
Will AT&T cancel my account ? is this a stupid way to protest? What do you guys think?

I would like to offer my input here by saying that that sounds like a GREAT way to protest.
Clearly these thresholds are going to HAVE to be changed with our current level and generation of wireless speeds. It's obviously impractical for the limits being as low as they are (before throttling).
They need to wake UP and take some action, and until they do that I say feel free to do whatever you'd like to nudge them along to hopefully get their tails moving in the right direction.

BTW my choice to switch to android after so many years after being loyal apple customer was nothing more then to try out other operating systems Oh and 4G . especially after being disappointed of the iphone4s which wasnt much of a change from the iphone4. were u forced off ur unlimited for tethering or for Internet usage?att has a policy in place to force unauthorized tethering people off unlimited data plans

Internet usage , cause I didn't own a laptop or of to be tethering off to . I would of switched over to sprint but unfortunately they have really really low speeds
AT&T really needs to think things through. Fine with throttling data, but AT&T needs to be clear about what is exactly the cap limit and let the consumer know about it. Now, for LTE, the cap needs to be higher than 6 GB a month. LTE speeds are very fast and with all of those updates from the market, streaming content such as videos @ 720 and HQ music your data will be consumed in no time. Your call AT&T, keep being sneaky and don't face the heat or just adapt to the fact that many consumer will start going the route of switching APN's on their phones and getting good HSPA+ speeds. I am lucky I live in Dallas were HSPA+ speeds are within 7 to 10mb download every time. Android 2.3.5 + HSPA+=winning combination for consumers.

Thanks for the honest reply. I was honestly curious. I have heard that sling box has horrible (meaning almost zero) data compression, so that doesn't surprise me. Do you have a data monitor on your phone so you can see how much each app is pulling? Might be interesting to know.
Installed one last night.
To give you an idea of the amount of control I use, I apparenyly use about 1-2gb of data a night on wifi.
I am using "my data manager" which tracks wifi and cell data. I am curious to see if claims that heavy amounts of cell data are still being used even though I am connected to wifi.
