Battery cover mod, polished metal - myTouch 4G General

This wasn't a very hard mod to do, but I think the phone looks a million times better. It started when I noticed a scratch on my back cover. I started picking at it, thinking a industrial bare metal back might be kind of cool. A little more scratched off, and to my surprise it was a beautiful polished metal underneath the exact same shade as the bevel on the front. So little by little I would scrape more. It was taking a great deal of time, so I decided to try using the edge of a thin piece of metal I had laying around. I started slow because I was unsure if the polished metal would scratch, it didn't. As I made better time now I was prepared for the t-mobile and HTC branding to come off, they did not. They, like the dots appear to be etched into the metal underneath. So now I have a beautiful, polished metal back on my phone at no cost. Seeing as how it matches the bezel and the branding is etched in, it seems that this was the intended look at one point. Why would HTC and T-Mobile cover this beautiful metal with a frosted coating? I always thought that the back looked out of place. Was it for fingerprints? Was it an antenna issue? I haven't noticed any ill effects yet, be advised it is a fingerprint magnet though. If you like please follow me on twitter @Dustin_aka_D, I'd appreciate it. Also, it's not hard, but is time consuming and tedious. Hope you like...

So, it's just a thin plastic/vinyl layer over the metal?
How prone is it to finger prints now?

It's actually not as bad for fingerprints as I thought it would be. The gloss underneath seems to be scratch resistant and kinda repels fingerprints. Wipes clean on a shirt.

I did the same thing to my thunderbolt. Works very well.

Someone else posted doing the same a few weeks ago, for the same reasons: noticed small scratches and stripped it all off. My wife actually did this to hers this week for again the same reason lol. It looks nice for sure, definitely shows finger prints a bit worse but they do wipe clean easily. Took her about two days on and off with a credit card, in between a cramped hand, haha.

Yeah, I used one of those smashed souvenir pennies, worked great. Definite cramped hand. Love it though

20min? haha im on the second day using a quarter, and ive gotten thru about 14 rows of those markings on the back of the phone

I just went nuts up and down then went across. It seemed like no matter how much pressure i put it didnt scratch the cover. A quarter has a more rounded edge than a dime that's why I used the dime. Now I just need to know if the area around the camera lens can be done. It looks like the same stuff but can't be fixed if I chunk it

This just in, sandpaper is abrasive.

LMAO sand paper, Ummm.... I did this a few days after I got the phone with a nickel. I realized that no matter what I did it was gonna come off anyways so off I went to the pocket and grabbed a shiny nickel and went to work (took about 10 minutes) used a puffing pad I had from a dremel kit I use some times at work and it came out nice.
This is a great fix for a bad design, the flat matte clear coat was a bad idea but was intended to protect the original image based below obviously, personally I would have used a clear textured vinyl coat over it and it would have lasted so much longer (I use to use it for custom boxes in cars for a 3d effect with layers of paint on each, works great) but either way this comes down to the point that the internal design was well thought out but not so much thought went into protecting the design.
Works for me.

Buffer and polishing compound would probably make it more shiny - I'll have to try that this weekend.

If you have nothing better to do...

i scratched off the matte finish on the metal cover and it revealed a very stunning undercoat. I think it looks much better. I used an expired credit card to scratch it off. do not use anything metal to scratch it off, it will leave a scratch on the undercoat.
Done on a white mt4g. i think the different colored mt4g have a darker back cover.
Also it takes a very long time to do.
Pictures were taken with flash off because it shines that much.

I'm not sure if you want to do this, if u look next to you sd card theres a gold contact that touches the inside of the battery cover. So the coating my be a barrier between the metal and our hands to prevent signal issues i.e. Iphone 4 like signal issues. Anyone who's tried this confirm either way? I love the look just don't want to regret it later.
Did you just rub the edge of the card on it for hours? Because I've been doing it for a couple minutes and I don't think it's getting me anywhere.

If you look on the underside of the cover, the spot on the cover which touches that contact is etched away. This is to ensure contact is made without obstruction. So there is no "barrier" between the cover and this contact. Just the opposite. My guess is that it is a ground circuit to divert static electricity. Since the cover is made of metal, this would make sense. Scratching off the outer dullcoat should not have any negative effect.

Chrome coming off/peeling off kickstand

Anyone else have this happening? The chrome is starting to come off my kickstand on the side where you lift it up on the edge. Its really minor now, but if it continues to do this it might bother me in the future as of now its not to noticeable.
Mine has it both on the side and a portion of the top of it. It looks really bad and is very annoying.

Yup, I've got a little spot on mine that's beginning to peel. Actually, mine's not the chrome, so much, but more like the "brushed" part. It's actually shinier under the spot that's peeled off.
I don't really care at this point. I might if it gets much worse.
Do you guys use your kickstand alot? Just wanted to know if this just peels off anyways or so? Cause I would like to avoid it but if its an avoidable then nevermind.
Sucks If it peels off no matter what you do then kinda screws you out of exchanging to get a new one from big red since their warranty has gotten tighter even doh this isn't your fault. Its the build quality.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
Mines peeling too. If you use the kickstand then its gonna peel...
I'm not saying you guys are doing anything wrong, but I try to be real careful with my kickstand, like when I pull it out I make sure I really get under it so my fingernail doesn't scrape the edge and peel. I can see on the very tip where it could eventually start to peel if I'm not careful.
If it ever get's real bad I'm sure something can be done to make it look better cosmetically.
Give it some time and I'm sure it'll look just like this.

trick to it, cut a piece or tape, not huge at all, just to go on the bottom edge of it... and put it there. That or stop laying your phone on hard surfaces when you put the kickstand down. Bingo.
I've only used the kickstand once, and the spot its coming off is along the long edge that doesn't touch any surface.

i use my stand a lot and dont notice any peeling or scratching. i dont really care what color it is as long as it stays sturdy and useful. this coming from a guy with a lime green case tho
Mines coming off slightly, but not from using the kickstand for viewing. I've been using my kickstand only in portrait stance, but the part that's peeling doesnt touch any surface. I believe its just from opening the kickstand.
That said, I recently bought a skinomi full body shield, put a piece over the kickstand and the peeling hasn't continued for now.

[Guide] Carbon fiber vinyl battery door, with lots of pics

After seeing a few posts (by ocdetails and desirez_pete) I wanted to try the mod myself. Thanks to their advice, I was able to do it pretty easily in one sitting. During the process I decided to take pictures just for the sake of having some kind of record, and since I didn't see any picture-filled guide on how to do this in our forum I thought I'd provide one to help those who might have been intimidated at the thought of this DIY. It's really quite easy!
I ordered a 1' x 6" sheet of "Black M500 3D Carbon Fiber Vinyl Stripe Wrap Sheet 6in" from an eBay seller named metrorestyling. It's basically a knock-off of 3M's DI-NOC carbon fiber vinyl. This sheet is enough material to do this mod for 6 battery doors.
I started by putting one edge of the battery door along one edge of a piece of paper, then outlining the rest. Next I taped the paper on the vinyl such that the straight edge of the paper was aligned with the carbon fiber weave.
{

A razor will cut the vinyl very easily. I then took off the back side of the carbon fiber vinyl, laying it sticky side up. I aligned one edge of the battery door with one edge of the vinyl and applied it starting from that side (like applying a screen protector).
It was already on really smoothly but I used heat from a hair dryer set to medium to smoothen as much as possible. One quote I read online was, "If the heat is to [sic] hot for your hands, then it’s hot enough for the vinyl."
Now this is where I should have done something better. With the excess vinyl not stuck onto the back of the batter door I immediately started cutting. I first cut it while trying to stay parallel to the battery door plane, so I can cut off excess later if necessary. While cutting I noticed it was better to cut with inward strokes, e.g., in the picture below I would move the knife down and left to avoid pulling the vinyl away from the battery door edge.
What I should have done is wrap the excess around while applying heat, followed by immediate cooling to "set" the vinyl in place around the edges. This unset vinyl along the edges gave me a little trouble later
This is what it looked like after a very, very rough cut.
This is where I realized my mistake above. I had to constantly reheat the edges to get good adhesion to the battery door edge, followed by immediate cutting. And since the adhesive film was unset, it kept accumulating on my knife, making it dull every so often
Side view:
To cut more vinyl off along the edges, I cut at an angle.
Preliminary fit was too tight, and the battery door wasn't fully pressed down. Also, my cutting was VERY sloppy on the speakerphone hole
So, I cut more.
It fit much better along all edges
And that's all there is to it! I hope this helps those who want to do this mod.
Looks good! I suggest you re-apply it a few more times and you should be able to get it perfect.
And another thing I forgot to tell you was try to stretch the vinyl over the edges while heating it to get the best adhesion but don't stretch it so that it distorts the carbon pattern. My application is still fully stuck on after 2 months
very nice!
looks good man. I'm think about doing something like it!
Thanks for this. I just bought the same sheet you bought. Hopefully it will arrive this week.
looks good, I am going to give this a try!
I did this the other day using your guide. I screwed up a little bit on the flat side by cutting off too much, so some of the door is showing, but overall I'm happy with it.

From what I've been told, the stuff comes right off when heated and residue can be removed with typical residue removal solution. If you bought the same sheet as me, you know how much more there is to use in case you want to retry it

I bought the ballistic BC case and I love it. Except for the screen protector. It got scratched and really blurry and it really ruined the amazing quality of the infuses screen. So I applied a regular screen protector (pack of three from Walmart for 10 bucks) and popped out the built in case protector easily by pushing on the edges and then put the case back on and now I must say that I am back to liking the case. And I am most likley going to dremel off the little Red bar behind the camera because it gives my pictures a red tint to it. I was skeptical at first but now its all good.
(Edit)Does anyone else get this when they take a picture with flash?

I have the same case and I removed the built in protector not long after getting it. It just takes away from the beauty of the screen.
Are there any good ones that don't take away from the luxury of the nice screen?
I have that same case.. I love the belt clip holder. And no. I don't have that problem. And I take a good amount of pictures. I hope that dremel fixes your problems.
And as you said.. those Walmart screen protectors worked fine? There's not any give on the front part that clips in? It seems like there would be more than usual because it is a lot thinner of a protector? (for everyone that doesn't have one it's a fairly sheet thick of pllastic)
And if you are coming here thinking of getting one, I will share my experiences with you. The case is made up of a hard plastic that is a .... well let's just say it's really hard to take off. Not impossible but especially that first time. This makes battery pulls harder. Sometimes you can get around it by killing the phone by holding the power for 6 or so seconds and then hitting the volume keys at the right time but it doesn't always work. The outer layer that comes on the case is nice and bulky. If you think that you will be sticking it in your pocket with this layer you got another thing coming. It's a very sticky plastic which makes it very hard to pull out of a pocket. It works very well with the case holder though. A rather obnoxious thing is there is slits around the base layer that the case slides into. The top two and the bottom two tend to come undone very easily. They always seem to slide out which is annoying. It's doesn't exactly make it feel like the case is going to come off but annoying. The only way that you can keep it in your pocket is if you don't have that layer on which decreases the protection. It feels VERY solid when you have the extra layer on and rather secure when you don't. It's also a little rough on the hands around the edges so if you have soft girly hands then you might want to looks else wards towards a pretty smooth case. But if you are a man and work in something tough or just aren't sure where you will drop it, this is the case for you. (Have never used otterbox..). But that is NOT to say that this case is by any means perfect. I had this problem where it felt like the vibration inside the case was going to rattle the phone to pieces.. that was kind of unnerving but I got used to it after a while. Then when on vacation I hopped onto a hotel bed, my right hip landing on the bed and the hip belt holder BROKE! I wasn't very happy because I was busy and couldn't go to ATT but it would no longer hold my phone. After all these problems I took it back to ATT where they quickly traded out the case for a new one.. I had my receipt of course.. I THINK they used it? Not positive. I have had this new case for 2 or so month have jumped onto my own bed and haven't broken it. It's also worth mentioning that at ATT they mentioned something about a one-time exchange policy. one coworker to another which means I can't break it again within my one year time frame. D: This is a bummer because I went through 3 ipod touches in one year. Let's say I realized just how much water was in my life... And finally if you are still reading this thanks, I didn't mean to make it so lengthy. In conclusion, it's a good case, pricy but protects it well. It's dropped a few times and I haven't really thought twice, because it's "designed to survive life".. just don't jump on a hotel bed.

I'm a big fan of carbon fibre in general, but don't really like the look of that.

I agree with you.. it looks better with just the back piece on, but until the bumper comes in stock, that's what it's going to look like..
That looks really nice.
They use 3M material.. I had the same thing on my s2 and it looks nice but feels like sh!t... Plus the nexus back looks good enough as is

Had it on my S2 too and actually really liked it. I just bought a bunch of 3M at some car tuning store and cut it myself. Still have some left and will definitely give it a try when I recieve my phone...

It's not a case, it's more of a sticker.
Looks like Crap! IMHO.
I just hate fake carbon fiber (vinyl). Real Carbon or GTFO!
Looks nice but I couldn't cover up the glass its to damn sexy

My glass scratched pretty bad on the first day and I was extremely careful with it so that's why it's getting covered

one reason why I don't like going carbon fiber. it really changes the look of the phone.

Does it make the screen feel sticky or add a lot of drag ?
Is there any orange peel effect?
Does it negatively impact screen clarity?

Looks pretty good but I wouldn't want to cover the dot design on the back.

i have only had it on for 24 hours and the orange peel effect is minimul compared to other screen protectors i have used.
this is the first screen protector i have used that you can't notice when the screen is on.
as far as cosmetics goes... I saved you guys from buying this and I only picked it out because it looked like it would be a nice fit but obviously turned out to be kind of ugly, I am thinking once the bumpers come back in stock Ill switch to a clear back seeing that the front is really clear so it should look nice.
I have used all the major companies and this is my favorite screen protector so far.
also if anyone needs tips on applying the sides PM me, that was a pita

Thanks so much! I've had a clear Skinomi full body protector sitting on my desk for days. Wasn't sure if I was going to use or our send it back. You inspired me to use it.
I only applied the front and back. I left the sides for a another time if I feel I need to use it.
It's been 12+ hours since application and I have some dents that I can feel every time I swipe my finger across the screen. It's literally smack dab in the middle of my screen and annoying the Hell out of me! :banghead:
I don't like the feel compared to the naked beauty and butter smoothness that it was before so not sure how long I'll be keeping this thing on.
Been trying to find a quality, ultra slim case or pouch but no luck so far. At this point I'll take the official bumper of they'd just get them back in stock...
