[Q] NS4g - Not detected by fastboot! - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Google doesn't know, so maybe the experts here can help.
I'm trying to unlock the bootloader of my Nexus S 4G.
I installed drivers via PDAnet. USB Debugging is on. Windows detects the device, both when its on in normal mode, and in Fastboot mode. ADB detects the phone when on.
Fastboot won't detect it when in Fastboot mode, though!
ADB won't detect it in Fastboot, either. (But maybe that's normal.)
Why doesn't fastboot see it?
I'm running Win7 x64, if that helps.
Thanks in advance.

I'm in "fastboot mode", I think that's what its called.
I get there by holding Vol Up + Power when I turn it on.

If you have the USB Driver from the SDK installed edit android_winusb.inf and add:
;Nexus S
%CompositeAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_18D1&PID_4E20&REV_0100
Go into device manager and tell it to update the driver, hit pick from list, all and have disk. Pick the INF and let it install.

Hi, I had the same problem, I fixed it by giving the command prompt root permissions (I'm using Linux). On Windows, make sure the command prompt is running AS THE ADMINISTRATOR

Fastboot flash recovery "recovery".img where "recovery" stands for the numbers of the recovery in tools folder i believe.
Also if you run 2.3.4, recovery wil not stick after reboot unless you change something ( i believe the recovery.sh file), hope this helps!

i can flash the recovery fia ROMManager, and also can boot into it, but when i boot the phone into bootloader/fastboot mode i can't flash a new recovery, because when i hit enter after "fastboot" i get no output in cmd
If you don't get anything back on fastboot devices, then you either don't have the proper drivers installed, don't have the phone in fastboot mode, or don't have the phone connected via USB. Probably the first one.
Easiest way to get the fastboot drivers is to simply install PDA Net on your computer and follow the on screen prompts. It will automatically install the appropriate drivers for your device.

Did you install the "ADB Bootloader Interface" driver?
Did you boot the the phone into the bootloader before trying the fastboot command? (ie. UP + PWR)

Is the phone in bootloader/fastboot when you typed the fastboot command?
.. Precisely phone should say FASTBOOT USB if connected properly from bootloader. If it is saying HBOOT then press power button once (which then changes to FASTBOOT USB) and try the command again

adb does not work when in bootloader, only fastboot works then.
Disconnect the USB cable from phone & PC.
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > From the list, uninstall all programs that begin with "HTC"
Install these drivers: http://downloads.unrevoked.com/HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe
Remove & reinsert your phones battery
Hold volume down + power to get to the botloader
Select fastboot & conenct the USB cable
Your phone should now say FASTBOOT USB
Type your fastboot commands

[SOLVED][Q] adb recognizes the phone but fastboot not

hi, I know there are lots of threads like this on forums, but they made no sense for me.
adb does recognize my sensation but fastboot doesn't.
when I enter the adb devices command it shows up but when I enter the fastboot devices, even in fastboot mode, it doesn't show up.
how can I fix this? I have htc sync, latest htc drivers, and android sdk installed.

[Q] Stuck in boot loop, can't detect in ADB or fastboot

Hey guys, I really need some help here, I'm not good at any of this stuff - my OPO just randomly got stuck on a boot loop, I have never played with the USB debugging or any of that or tried to flash anything else, I was using just stock cyanogen.
I've been reading around and I've downloaded all the drivers but still can't detect the device when I do the Shift + Right Click --> Run CMD "fastboot devices" or "adb devices".
I never enabled options such as the USB debugging or anything else, can someone please help me out? I'm really clueless to all of this stuff.
You must first put your phone in fastboot mode.
To put your phone in fastboot mode, turn it off, and then hold power+volume down until you get a screen with only the cyanogenmod logo. If you get to this screen, you're in fastboot mode. If you have installed the proper drivers in your computer, you should be able to connect to the phone from your computer. Connect your usb cable to the phone and the computer, open a dos box and type "fastboot devices". If you get a series of letters and numbers then you're OK.

Although I just tried and am able to boot into recovery mode, would I be able to do some sort of factory reset there? I've already tried to wipe user data but I'm still getting a bootloop there.

Get into Bootloader. (I use ADB command: ADB Reboot Bootloader)
Use the volume down button to select "Fastboot Protocol."
It is deceptive as the screen on your Shield won't change.
Use your fastboot commands now. See if that works.
You need to make sure your fastboot and adb drivers are installed and recognized.
Also need fastboot on your pc of course. Good luck.
Once again, the bootloader is fastboot on your tablet, if you are on that screen then you can use fastboot if the above conditions are met.
Same symptom here.
When Android is loaded, Win10 finds it as both MTP and USB debugging device. adb is reporting back. All well.
However, when shield is in fastboot mode, fastboot finds nothing.
In my case reason was driver:
when connected in fastboot mode, win10 wants to install an
Android Device -Android Bootloader Interface
=> you see this in device manager
To satisfy Win10, download NVIDIA USB driver from here
https://developer.nvidia.com/shield-open-source
hence point the driver install in Win10 device manager to the driver download/extract location
Reconnect your shield.
In my case this worked.
Hope this helps
