Touchdown Contacts on 2.3.3 - Captivate General

This has been bugging me for weeks and I've yet to hear a response from Nitrodesk's support team.
From the synced contacts list in the Touchdown app, when you long press on a contact and try to add it to phone, it will not show up on the phone's contact list.
I made sure the display settings were all checked off in Phone, SIM, and Google to make sure I can see everything.
This worked well for me on Froyo, but I have yet to get it to work on any 2.3.3. ROMs I've flashed.
Can anyone confirm they are having the same issue?

I am running Continuum 5.5 and I can copy contacts to my phone from Touchdown just fine. Have you tried selecting the menu option to copy all touchdown contacts to the phone or is this just a problem with individual ones?
I wouldn't expect any response from Nitrodesk support. They will use any excuse possible to not help you troubleshoot a problem if you are not running 100% stock. At least that is my experience. If you said Captivate and 2.3.3 in the same breath they will most likely ignore you now.

This is just for individual contacts that I want one-by-one from Touchdown to the phone. I can batch copy the entire list to the phone, but that's not what I want to do.
Are you referring to "Update Contact Changes to Phone"? If so, that's not exactly what I'm shooting for. Is there another setting I'm missing that helps with individual transfer?

NM. Problem solved, though I don't clearly remembering having to do this on Froyo.
I had to make sure that my Touchdown account was listed in Accounts and Sync. However, I couldn't just simply add it --- I pressed the Touchdown listing but it did nothing. I had to batch import my Outlook contacts so that it would get added on the overall accounts list. I was avoiding having to batch import so that's why it took me so long to get to this point.
Now that I have it listed, I could now add individual Touchdown contacts to Phone.
Again, I don't remember having to do this on Froyo, or that it added the account without my knowing it.

Inspire and microsoft exchange 2007 contacts/sync?

Here is my issue, also want to mention I had the same issue with a completely stock inspire before ever flashing my ROM this week. Ever since I got my inspire months ago I had this issue....
My default account for work is set up on my phone..
Emails and calender sync without any issues (both ways)
Contacts will not sync from my phone.
If I enter a new contact on my work computer it will push to my phone but not the other way around.
I need my contacts off my phone sync to my work computer!
Settings on my phone for my default account is:
auto-sync
sync contacts (checked)
sync calendar (checked)
Automatic (push) selected
default account selected
When I do a manual sync, nothing. Tried rebooting and nothing, like I said had the same issue with stock ROM.
Everyone at work has the iphone (is what I had before and it sync without any issues) so I do not have anyone over here to compare or check with.
Any suggestions out there?
So everything else works except I can not sync contact from my phone to my computer...
Need to change up my question a little. I discovered that if I enter a new contact it does sync to my computer. But how do I sync my existing (580) contacts to my computer off my phone? If I go to my work computer under contacts it only shows the one or two I just tested, not the other 580 contacts......
Calendar and email work great both ways as always.....

You save bet would be to remove the contacts on your phone and then reload them, when you import them choose google and not phone.
Can you explain a little more please, not following you...

Ok your issue is with the contacts that are stored on your phone not syncing up to your account. how did the contacts on your phone get there? Did you import your contacts from sd card?
I did a backup before I flashed I guess. When I restored my back-up it installed all my contacts back.
I used TB for all my app back-ups before I flashed. If I recall before I even set up my work email on the new ROM I already had all my contact back. I assumed they came from the TB.

Yes sir TB, the paid version.

Ok here is what I would do as I never use TIBU to back up contacts. Go into people and hit menu, select export to SD card. Then try to re import them. It should ask you where you want to import them. Choose Google or you exchange account.
Well I guess what happens is that TB also backs up your data within you apps. I am using GO contacts. Thats how it backed up my contact I assume.
Will try what you just mentioned right now.

Yes it does and that why I dont use it for anything contact related as I believe (mind you this is just my 2 cents) that contacts are wrapped up in the system data as well. I normally just export all contacts to sd and then import them. I dont even use google to back them up lol

There is a little computer application that will sync your google contacts with outlook easily too but it's a little screwy sometimes.
I exported them to the SD card then I imported them back but It did not asked where to import them back to.
After it was finished they did not sync. Just to check it out I enter a NEW contact on my phone and sure enough it went to my computer. There is gotta be a way to put my existing contacts on my computer...
Also what to mention that when I exported them to my SD card, all my contacts were still on my phone (i checked after I exported) even though I did not import them yet. Is this right? Or should I export my contacts to my SD card then delete all contacts in my app then go back and import from my SD card?
Correction should I delete all contacts in my native contact list, not the app...then import from SD card
Hold on, my correction, it did ask what account to import them into and I did select the wrong account. Doing it now and importing them into my google email account as you mentioned.

Did importing them to your google account work? It should. just might have to force a refresh.
Yes I checked my google account and they are there, but I do not use my google account for anything other than the market. I am trying to get them on my exchange account at work.

Ok your exchange account should pick up your google contacts. I am not sure as to why they are not. When you set up your exchange account does it normally sync your google contacts to it? I am playing this by ear as I dont use exchange at all. (Pisses my IT guy right off)

Exporting AND SYNCING contacts stored on phone to google

I've contacts that are stored on the 'Phone'. Is there some way to copy AND SYNC them in future with Google And Microsoft Exchange Activesync(Hotmail) ? Is there any app which does this ?
Any help guys ? Of late , xda doesn't seem to be providing me with some useful solutions :-(
And here we are , bumping once more.
Hi looks like you need help.
Well, I'd say there's not much in terms of apps that I know of that can do this all in one go (if anyone finds one, post it? If i find one, ill post it too), but I do know of a pretty simple way to do it:
1.) Using the built-in Contacts app or whatever other app that you want, export the CVS/vCard file of your current address book for your phone into your SD card.
2.) From here, upload it to your Gmail by either throwing the file into your computer and loading the file from your harddrive to their servers, or just do it through the mobile browser (if you have problems with the mobile website since I haven't tried this myself, try using Dolphin Browser HD definitely a great app)
3.) Viola! Everything should be synced and in order
It's true that this is not a one-click solution to your problem. There is one for HTC phones built into their ROM, but it has a bug which prevents syncing if you have the birthday field filled out or something like that. If you could tell me what phone it is, maybe I can help a bit more. In the meanwhile, I'll look for some apps. If you could make do with this for now, you should be good to go (though 3 clicks isn't really all that bad )
-EDIT- Forgot to mention, you can also use that CVS/vCard file and easily just dump it into Outlook. Another 2 clicks, but it ain't so bad now, is it?
-EDIT2- Well, after a few more searches, it seems that Google is supposed to auto sync contacts 2-way on all phones with their gmail accounts associated with the device. I don't know if they apply to contacts you've gotten through Facebook, but it does seem to work for the most part. As for the ActiveExchange thingy, I think this app might suffice if you're willing to shell out a small bit of money: http://www.androidtapp.com/exchange-by-touchdown/ Didn't test the app myself, so ask around first and read up on it (Google ).
If you're willing to shell out a good amount of money (hefty 25 buckaroos), here's a supposedly good app: http://www.tgdaily.com/mobility-fea...-of-corporate-exchange-contacts-and-calendars
IMHO, if i were you, I would just stick to the whole 5 step process. Not sure if the ActiveExchange can accept vCards/CVS (never had to use it), but you save yourself 25 or so bucks. But, that's just my two cents on it. Your choice

I've a HTC Legend.
Ok , I get your point. If I sync it with GMail , will ALL the alternate contact numbers , group info , Facebook Profile pics , their birth dates be synced ?

You have an HTC phone, so the contacts and stuff SHOULD be synced with your HTC account/google account too. Just in case, I'd double-check right now.
As for if it will back up ALL that stuff, the answer is yes. This is because vCards and CVS are able to handle various amount of data, so it should also be recognize by Google, at the very least (but its standard so it should also work with Outlook/whatever other program). The only thing that won't be synced is the facebook pictures only because they can change, but if you were to add your facebook account to your phone, it will automatically take care of this, so you shouldn't have to worry about it.
As usual, if you're willing to shell out a bit of cash, here's a solution to your FB photo problem. Hope everything works out for you

I will not be using Outlook , firstly. No , the contacts are not synced with the GMail (Google Account). I am under the presumption that only contacts SAVED on Google Account can be synced. Since they are saved on the phone memory ... I don;t know. But please enlighten me.

Okay, well, if you check it out here, you'll find the thing you might need for the corporate sync since you're not using Outlook (my bad. like i said, don't use it too much) and if this link doesn't work, you might need an update then.
As for the Google sync problem, I did a bit of researching. Apparently, its 2-way syncing, but like you probably noticed, it's not doing so hot. After fooling around for a bit, I finally got it to work pretty well. Apparently, you need a couple of conditions set in place in order for it to work nicely:
1.) Have the GMail app and set it to use your default email
2.) Make sure that under Accounts > [email protected] settings, you check sync next to Contacts (and if it still doesn't work, then try also syncing GMail.)
3.) If your phone has a Battery Manager (mine does) make sure that the setting you choose does not put restrictions on sync! (if it does, then you'll see a lag between syncs. For me, it was 15 minutes)
Thanks to Darth_Penguin for the first two tips.
Last but not least, the strangest thing I've encountered yet: Export your phone contact's list and import it into Gmail at LEAST once. Here's the reason why:
It seems that Google is syncing your contacts that you make. It works very well and doesn't seem to have a hitch pulling stuff that you have on your contacts book. However, there's a flaw: it doesn't play so nicely with Facebook. Most of us have Facebook synced onto our devices and we forget about that. It's true most of our contacts aren't in our gmail, but that's because we never had all of those FB friends names in our gmail either. That's why it seems it's not syncing right. if you want it to, I would suggest this: Import your entire contacts into your SD card through the menu button in your Contacts program, then export it out. Sync that file with Gmail, and you should be good to go. Sometimes, we sync it to Facebook, but it doesn't mean it'll sync to Gmail. Haven't tested out whether or not you'll end up with doubles, but i'll update if i get a chance (planning out beach day!) =D let me know how it goes for you (but that should work. In the odd chance it doesn't, at least we've tried something)
Good luck!

Ok, the top most segment does not work. I have tried the last para. Here's what I did,
1. I imported the contacts to my gmail account by the vcf file.
2. All my contacts have come up but not their profile pic
3. Now what ? I did'nt understand this segment.
" Sync that file with Gmail, and you should be good to go. Sometimes, we sync it to Facebook, but it doesn't mean it'll sync to Gmail. Haven't tested out whether or not you'll end up with doubles, but i'll update if i get a chance (planning out beach day!) =D let me know how it goes for you (but that should work. In the odd chance it doesn't, at least we've tried something)"
ALSO, now if I want to 'sync' do I always have to do this way of exporting the vcf file ?
Okay the reason why you don't have the profile pics are because those don't get saved into the vcf files. Only textual data. The pictures came from facebook and unless you use an app or program or service, you can only get the pictures synced to your contacts by syncing with facebook. And as for the loading the vcf, you only need to do this once to sync all contacts from across all your services (facebook, gmail, etc.). So long as you only add contacts through your contacts app, you should have no problems with your gmail.
however, do note that if another third party app/service syncs in a new contact for you (e.g. Facebook), it will NOT sync with gmail as they don't support third party companies. If it's a problem, either sync your device with your third party company (e.g. Facebook) our just do the vcf trick I taught you every once in a while to synchronize all your services/contacts

[Q] Qauntum useless after Mango update would flashing back work

I have an LG Quantum and after the Mango update I don't receive email for my Hotmail accounts and I can no loner delete email from the Exchange server for my Exchange account. I have deleted and re-added all email accounts multiple times and have reset the phone twice - still the exact same problems.
I found the following thread here...

Would using those instructions to flash back work because the phone is useless to me now.

that is bizarre. Sounds like a certificate issue. You tried a complete cold boot (hard reset in Settings, About, reset your phone)? and it's still not working? Can't imagine what an original rom would do better than that. If you look further down the thread you found with the roms, there seems to be a NoDo rom as well.
Did you try to restore back to NoDo? when you upgraded to Mango the install process should have created a NoDo restore. Open Zune client, connect phone via USB and check Settings/Phone/Update. there should be a restore option at the bottom (Must be the same PC and same user account you used to upgrade to Mango).
There is some good info in this thread here about the same issues others had. At least somebody found a solution for Exchange server sync that may work for you.
Somebody here had the same problem with hotmail accounts. Even after hard resetting etc. He and somebody else were able to fix this by adding a twitter account (just a dummy one). Once twitter was added it fixed all hotmail problems. Note that they had this problem on 7712, however it sounds very similar to your problem. It also shows that a hard reset of rom flash will likely not help at all because it is some kind of certificate error or similar.
I would think that reflashing the phone would not be any different than hard resetting your phone. I strongly believe that the problem is someplace else as seen in the other posts above.
Good luck and hopefully it is something simple.
cheers
Thanks so much for your reply!
I just spent over an hour on the phone with AT&T who referred me to LG who told me to contact Microsoft. And we all know you can't contact Microsoft. Thus I got nowhere which is what I thought would happen but wanted to try anyway.
if you think flashing won't right this then I won't do it. What is interesting with my problem is there are no error messages - you just won't receive some email for Hotmail unless you manually hit the sync key (even though I have set it to deliver "as items arrive") - but other times you will. I spent a great deal of time today with my Exchange provider who is telling me others who have upgraded to Mango are having no problems. Thus no help from them either. I spent $500 for this phone right when it came out... and if it can't successfully and reliably handle email, and it's less than a year old - well I have no words for that.
I have seen the link about the tasks affecting Exchange and tried that but it didn't work - although their problem had an error message mine is not giving me. Adding a Twitter account is something I had not seen - who knows??? I am very frustrated at this point and would try anything..
Thanks so much for taking the time to reply!!

I am sure you probably checked this already. if you go into settings and swipe over to applications and go to people at the bottom is accounts. when you tap on windows live or other accounts you should see sync settings, e.g. content to sync (email). At top of the same page you see how often it pulls data.
for my hotmail account the server listed is m.hotmail.com
make sure those settings make sense.
ATT or LG will not be able to help you with this and I wouldn't hold it against them. I believe this is related to a sync/server hiccup. With a hard reset you create a the windowslive account fresh, so I do not believe it's anything on the device. I would try to change the password on my hotmail or windowslive account, so that the server has to re-establish/refresh user credentials.
edit: make sure you report about your outcome. hopefully a good one.
I didn't think AT&T or LG would be able to help - to get me to call them means I am reaching the end of what I can think up to throw at this. They do what the can, this just beyond what they would know.
All my Hotmails are m.hotmail.com for the EAS. My settings all make sense - but your idea of trying to reset the password is a good one. I will give that a shot.
My main man at Exchange is back tomorrow (he was out today) if anybody can help me he can. He in in charge of the mobile division - he is really nice and doesn't give up easily. Hopefully working with him tomorrow can deliver some kind of answer to this.
Once again, thanks for your patience and time

Ready for what the Exchange problem turned out to be??? When deleting I use the check boxes on WP7. When you hit just to the left of an email, check boxes appear, and I selected what I want deleted and hit the trash can at the bottom. Then I would hit sync. That doesn't work for my Exchange account anymore, thus my email was still sitting on the server. You have to push down on the email message and delete using the pop up menu. Then it deletes the email off the server... I have still been able to use the check boxes for my Hotmail account from WP7 to delete from server.
I am still dealing with how to get my Hotmail email off the server using Outlook as the "Remove from server when deleted from 'deleted items'" no longer works. Which forces POP3 users into the Hotmail Connector. I am going to work with that today to see if I can use it but configure it to not sync my calendar/contacts and certain email folders that I do not want on Hotmail's server. If you use Yahoo I guess you are just out of luck now...
So some of this is solved...

I knew there were checkmarks, never used them. I always highlight an email or thread and delete. But I also never paid attention whether they are deleted from the server. My Outlook at home fetches the same emails and it deletes emails after two weeks anyway.
Have you tried to create a dummy hotmail account to test the problems you have with your current?

How I delete (whether check mark or holding for the pop up menu) didn't work this afternoon. I worked with the Exchange guy today and we thought we had it... but it happened again late today. I also have my Outlook set to delete the email but once I try to delete it from WP7, unless I log into OWA the email doesn't get deleted - so when I look at my Blackberry, or some other device, I see all these emails that should have been deleted if not by WP7, then by Outlook (If WP7 fails to delete I use Outlook). Right now I am restoring my system back to a month ago (I use Acronis so I have multiple image backups) to see if anything got corrupted in Outlook - just to rule it out.
So bummed because I thought I was in the clear.. (but to tell you the truth, I thought "how" I deleted seemed a little sketchy.)

before you do your system restore, please make a backup of your NoDo restore point that was created when you upgraded to Mango.
The restore point is located here:
C:\Users\UserAccountName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Phone Update\g52e4324 - 19e00804 - 6918db00 - e64473cf
where the last gibberish is your phones device ID (and therefore different than the above).
That folder should have the date of your Mango upgrade. You can use this to roll back to before you upgraded to Mango using the Zune client. Just in case you find out it DOES have to do with the Mango upgrade and the problem is on the device.
Thanks so much for passing that along. I went ahead and backed up the file you suggested. I have done a hard reset on my LG (2 actually) - if I take my computer back a month will the Zune client know the phone due to the hard reset? And if it doessn't, can I simply put that file back in place and "point" Zune to it to get a successful restore?
Once again thanks for all the help....

yes, after your restore, connect the phone to USB and let Zune recognize it. Zune should create a folder of the same file structure in the Phone Update directory if one isn't there already (probably your restore folder will have a pre NoDo restore point). Disconnect phone, close Zune and replace the one you just backed up with the one that is in there (best to delete old one and copy new one in to avoid mixup of files). When you open Zune and connect the phone and check settings/phone/update you should see a restore point with the date of your Mango upgrade. The directory structure should look identical to what it looks right now (in other words, you need to copy the entire device ID folder into the Windows Phone Update folder). Sorry for being wordy....
Great! Fantastic news! I will go ahead and restore the computer back to a month ago now... this will rule out Outlook causing any problem - narrowing down where the problem is.
I know I keep saying this, but thanks again for the help!
p.s. you are anything but "wordy" - have you looked at my stuff??? now that's wordy.
I restored the computer back and things are better. As far as WP7 I can still tell that deleting by bringing up the pop up window on WP7 as opposed to the check marks is indeed a factor. The check marks don't work for conversations. Maybe the pop up windows takes the conversation an a "whole" and deletes it. It seems WP7 and Outlook 2010 and working together better - not flawlessly yet, but better.
Sometimes the Exchange server lags at night when you delete from Outlook so I will wait until morning for further testing. But I am feeling a litter better tonight about what I am seeing after the restore.
I can't thank you enough for your invaluable help! I have a Nokia N900 and have flashed it before - and tried to flash it backwards due to an upgrade issue, which wasn't so easy - so I know if can be difficult. I really appreciate your input that flashing wasn't really advisable for my situation. You spared me unnecessary work as well as giving instructions on saving my restore point for Zune. So I certainly owe you one!
I will post back what happens as well as what I am going to do about Hotmail not deleting from the server using Outlook anymore (even after the restore that option isn't working, so it's coming from Microsoft.)
See I told you I could be wordy
Sandy
p.s. I do have my restore point in Zune for Mango btw - I followed your instructions - killer!!

cool, and no problem. I am just giving back the help I got from others in this forum. And learn something new as a side effect. And as always, we will be well prepared for this problem, but the next one is going to be something entirely different anyway.

My email was a trainwreck today. WP7 will delete Exchange from the server but Outlook now won't. Exchange on WP7 isn't working in "real time" I have to hit the sync button to get it to refresh and tell me what email is on the server (I have "as items arrive" as my setting.)
On WP7 All 3 Hotmail accounts are unable to delete any email off the Hotmail server even though I have m.hotmail.com selected, which is like Exchange and should give me a direct reflection of Hotmail's server. All my email is sitting in Hotmail's inbox.
I am calling AT&T tomorrow to get another one as I am still under warranty. It will be refurbished which I don't like but I feel I have no other choice. I have gone in circles for over a week trying to solve this and can't.
I will post back how my next phone goes... if I have any of the same problems (hopefully I won't.)

darn, before you return it have you considered to restore back to pre Mango? connect phone, open Zune and go to settings/phone/update. you should see a restore button that should take your phone back to the state before you upgraded to Mango.
I just tried the email deleting myself to make sure (more for myself) that this is not a feature. It works fine. When I delete an email from the phone and the phone syncs (set to every 30min), the email gets deleted from the server right then or when I manually sync.
I decided to do just that... I think I will stick on "Life before Mango hell" for a little while. Watch everything delete from server just like it should for awhile. I didn't know how good I had it. Plus, when I talked to AT&T they said normally you won't get a refurbished phone for this type of problem. But I also said if you would like me to continue to pay you a large monthly smartphone family plan like I do ( I am not under contract, I buy my phones myself) then you better make sure I have something to play with.
But pre Mango I am running as stellar as before... Thanks for making sure I had that backup!
I will try to upgrade again, maybe next week - and see if it handles it better...

glad the restore worked fine. so you were correct all along and it is indeed the device, wow.
Maybe there is a setting in NoDo that causes the partially failed upgrade. So here is one more suggestion. If the next Mango upgrade gives you the same problem then restore to NoDo (move the current backup you have to a safe place) and hard reset the phone in NoDo, and only then upgrade to Mango.
Good luck

Yes, I totally agree... A wiped device then upgrade to Mango.
I will let you know...
Once again, Thanks!
Sandy
I did the roll back to NoDo - Hard reset - update to Mango. The update took twice as long even though there was nothing on the phone (weird.) My Hotmail accounts (which are EAS) are now syncing, but I am still having trouble with deleting from Server using Exchange even when I hold down to get the pop up box for delete (which does work better than the checkmarks.) I have to over ride with my Blackberry to get things off the server. I am seeing things on forums now regarding EAS not syncing for people, mostly contacts and calendar, but it's there. Thus we all have to wait for MS to issue an update that fixes this.
So we wait...

Email app deletes Inbox contents during synch

Hi folks,
The native email app on my Verizon Galaxy S III is setup for POP3 send/receive with my ISP account, just as I've configured on prior phones. When it "syncs" email, anything in my Inbox on the phone literally disappears and new email is downloaded and shown in the Inbox. Sometimes, email sits on the phone for a day then is erased on the next synch.
I've tried turning off synch for this POP3 email under Settings -> Accounts, which seems to keep the Inbox populated longer than an hour or less, but nothing prevents emails from being removed up to a day after being received.
This behavior is unwanted and seems a bug - exact thing happens on our other GS3.
Ideas welcome.
UPDATE: I found a repeatable scenario for this symptom and reported it to Verizon Technical Support. This seems specific to email programs based on the stock ICS code for this phone. I have purchased Kaiten email as a workaround option (it's very good, IMHO - K-9 email is the earlier, still-free version of Kaiten, if you are interested to try).

The included email application also irks me as well; even when I set it to sync ONLY my inbox, it floods me with email from all my other folders, including the junk folder... And to top it off, it syncs waaay more than I tell it too..
Anyways back to your problem, have you tried clearing the email application's data? Perhaps starting fresh with the application might be what you need.
To do that, just to Settings -> Application Manager > Look for 'Email' , press it, and then hit "Clear Data".
When you launch email after that, it will be as if you first opened the application.
Hope that helps..
Thanks, we've tried clearing, deleting/reinstalling the accounts, etc. and no go. I've setup these same POP3 accounts on multiple devices in the past for all sorts of email clients and this is the first to wipe out prior emails before my eyes.
Email should be rather basic and is kind of essential, so a bug like this is odd.
I also don't understand what the Settings -> Accounts -> Email -> Synch checkbox is supposed to do in this case, since the Email app has settings to check for new email every 15 minutes and does so if I uncheck that box in the phone's Settings.
Unfortunately, I haven't found another email client - pay or free - which has a decent interface in comparison to this basic app. It seems stupid to pay for such a basic feature, so I'll phone this in to Verizon as another complaint about the phone (i.e., it won't be the first, unfortunately - I'm hoping this feedback gets to Samsung eventually), but am willing to try other clients just to get a clear, basic interface and solid operation.

Well, if your phone is rooted (it is much easier to do it now in less than five minutes), then you could also replace the stock email application with the aosp email application. It'S the email application that's on pure android. I find it much better than the included app.

Yeah, I've been avoiding root - even with the new procedure - in case the phone needed to go back in due to any h/w issues, since I had WiFi oddness in the first week (which has since gone away . . . even more odd). Just didn't feel like going through unrooting, etc. if returnable issues continued.
It might be what I need to do, though it can't hurt to give Verizon a call and report this app behavior.

I am having a somewhat similar situation. Using the stock email app on my S3, my inbox seems to be deleting any emails older than 1 week? I do have it set to "Never". Anyone else have this?

Yes, though this happens within 24 hours for both of our GS3 phones, despite the "Sync" values in Settings for each account.
I am literally seeing the emails disappear before my eyes on refreshes, as they don't even go into Trash. Something seems awfully amiss.

I rely on my emails for business, so this is a huge issue for me.
I am going to give K-9 a try. I might also look into syncing my business account with Gmail using IMAP

Don't forget to thank the op of that thread (too )
I decided to root the Galaxy S III (with the quick method), deleted the shipped email and exchange apps, installed the AOSP versions from ICS and . . . emails disappear from the InBox even faster, now. So, there's something odd going on, here.
I found a copy of the Verizon stock image for our phones, researched how to convert and mount the system.img.ext4 file contained therein, pulled out the Samsung SecEmail and Exchange .apk and .odex files, then recopied them into /system/app. Rebooting had my Samsung email working again, bugs and all.
So, now I'm going to unroot and call Verizon Support. Titanium backup had a backup of these apps, but when I uninstalled the apps from the phone . . . it also deleted the backups, apparently. Hm.
Thanks.

Definitely freaky behavior! I don’t have a phone with POP3 in front of me so I may not have the menu wording exact. I found that if you change Amount of Mail to Sync to “1 Month or 100 Emails” (it was the last option in the drop down box) it corrects the deleted email problem.
Hope this helps,
BigK52
I dont know if you want to go through this or not. I was having serious email issues also. stuff deleting, not receiving, not pushing...etc. I was rooted with a newly flashed Rom and thought maybe it was the Rom causing the issues. Everything on the Rom was working perfectly except this. I also use my email for work so it was important that it work correctly. I had just spent several hours setting my phone up but decided to wipe clean again and reflash. In my set up with Bean V5 it asks if I wanted to restore any emails already set up. the first time I pressed yes, this time I bypassed and instlled everything and prcedded manually not using auto. Everythign went through fine and my email and the rest of the software seems to be working just fine. It was a lot of work and wasted time but hopefully it will be worth it if all works well. Just a thought.

Thanks, it was one of the early options I tried here (actually, went with various values), but both phones still delete Inbox emails within 24 hours.
Yes, definitely freaky behavior.

When I reinstalled the default Samsung email + Exchange APKs after backing out the AOSP versions, I went through "Manual" configuration this time . . . we'll see if that matters, but it really shouldn't. Thanks for the suggestion.
- ooofest
Ouch, it's still not working? If manually setting the settings doesn't work, perhaps it is an issue with the email service you are using... If there is a web interface for your email service, perhaps you have a setting for deleting a message after a certain amount of time or after you view a message. Perhaps that's the case?
Just a thought, I hope in the end it all works out for you
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Yeah, it's rather odd. I tried our Droid Incredible, Incredible 2 and Galaxy Tab (all on Gingerbread) yesterday, with no problems retaining our POP3 emails.
Seems to be a POP3 issue related to the ICS email client. Testing with a Play email replacement today . . .

OK, while on the phone with Verizon Support, I figured out a repeatable problem scenario:
Setup a POP3 account using the default Email app
Pull down emails from your server using POP3. There will be new emails in your phone's local Inbox and you can do anything you like with them (i.e., all functionality is enabled and operates as expected).
At this point, you can sync/refresh the Inbox for your POP3 account as much as you want and the emails you downloaded remain local to the phone.
Delete some or all of the previously downloaded emails from the server. This happens sporadically in our case, because only our PCs delete emails from the mail server at various points in the day, but our phones poll for new emails every 15 minutes.
You can still sync/refresh the Inbox for your POP3 account as much as you want and the emails you downloaded remain local to the phone.
Send a new email to your account, i.e., place a new email on the server.
Refresh your account's Inbox on the phone by either re-opening the closed Email program or hitting the little refresh circle in the upper right corner while viewing the Inbox.
Your new email will be downloaded from the server. And, all emails that were deleted from the server will disappear from your Inbox.
So, the local Inbox disappearances only happen for emails that were deleted from the server, during a synch that brings a new email to the Inbox from that same POP3 server.
I reported this scenario to Verizon Technical Support for submission to Samsung.
There may be other repeatable scenarios which cause local Inbox emails to disappear from the stock Email app, but I am not yet aware of them.
They had another report of the same issue, with only recommended workaround being the installation of a new POP3-supporting Email app (they suggested K-9).

I can tell you K9 won't work, either. It also deletes all your emails that aren't on the server once you sync just as the stock app does, however I didn't try K9 with the stock email app deleted so who knows? I guess I'll give it a try with the stock app deleted and report back.
I'll be following this thread, meanwhile I'll probably re-activate my Thunderbolt or my old BlackBerry because, unfortunately, I cannot live with this bug.
UPDATE: Use Titanium BU to remove email app(s), reboot and install Aqua Mail, it retains emails after they are deleted on the server!
This means TOUGH LUCK, ebay people, my Galaxy S3 is NOT FOR SALE!

I've moved to the purchased Kaiten email app - from the author of K-9 - and it works great. Respects the settings for each account and there have been no unexpected actions. UI is solid, too.

[Q] Nexus 5 won't sync gmail contacts?

Hi All,
I tried to find something similar but to the best of my searching abilities, nobody seems to be having the same issue.
I've been using an HTC One (a GNex before that) for the last few months. When I got it, like my other previous Android phones, at the initial setup it pulled down all of my contacts.
When I set up my N5, however, the contact list was the last one from my GNex! The hundreds of new contacts since then are not on the new phone. It's enough to make me want to just sell the phone instead of going through each contact individually.
On my HTC one in the People app it shows 494 contacts under my gmail address, and last sync was a few minutes ago. On the N5 I don't get the same screen, but I have a total of 123 people in the app, and it shows that it has synced with my gmail.
Does anyone know what's going on here, and how to get my contacts onto the N5?
Thanks!
You probably saved your new contacts on the htc on the phone not on google...
Change them to google or export them all and import into google.
ALSO, make sure you had the htc one set to sync contacts...settings..accounts...google...click on your email..

My contacts are saved to Google. In my People app on the HTC, When I click to choose source, "Google (my email)" is selected, with 495 contacts.
As I said in the original post, everything is synced, and the last sync was a few minutes before the post.
I tried the export and import but all that did was double the number of contacts under my Google account (gmail address).
Is there anything else I can try?
I am currently using an iPhone 4 and the idiots at Apple have removed the option to export contacts to Google in their iTunes program... SO now I have installed a little app called Bump, that should help me transfer all my contacts to the new Nexus 5 when i get it. You can try it with your two phones if you like. Seems pretty simple, however i have never used it yet...
Here is a link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bumptech.bumpga&hl=en
well if what you said is true, you should be in the htc one forum, not the nexus 5. Apparently your htc is what messed up.
I really have to go with user error here, its pretty basic stuff. I highly doubt your htc one failed to sync contacts even though it was set to sync google contacts...if so..you are the "one."
I know that sounds rude, but, really.....its basic stuff here.
GOOGLE how to backup contacts and restore them on an android phone, unless you want your hand held here.
Hey whatever happened to the OP's problem ? Did he/she fix it ? I have recently transferred all my contact from my iPhone to my new N5 with absolutely no problems with this app. I can confirm it works like a charm and totally recommend it. It takes less then 10 seconds to complete everything. The actual transfer took like 1 second !!!
I have a similar issue.
I too am coming from an HTC One, but I don't think that's the problem in my case. I've logged into my Nexus 5 using my Google credentials, but none of my Google contacts are appearing. I checked my contacts list in Gmail from my laptop to be sure, and all my contacts are there. I went back to my Nexus 5 and manually synced contacts in the settings, but nothing changed; my contacts are still not showing up.
I would love to know if anyone has found a resolution to this issue.
Have you made sure that "Auto-sync app data" is checked off,
"All contacts" is selected in Contacts to display,
and "Contacts" is checked off in your Gmail sync account.
Are you using a corporate Google account? You may need to ask your administrator for help.
Did you log into http://contacts.google.com and see if they are shown there? If so they must also be in My Contacts which the HTC might not be setting. Also on your phone, check settings and then check if they are in another folder just not being displayed.
