I have an Android Honeycomb Tablet (Asus Transformer), which blocks ad-hoc WiFi connections. So, the Wireless Tethering for Root Users app won't help me for a WiFi connection. Barnacle also seems to do ad-hoc WiFi connections, so no help there.
But, I used to be able to do Bluetooth tethering to the tablet using the Wireless Tethering for Root Users app just fine from my MotoDroid. For some reason, I can't with my SamChg. After pairing the tablet with my SamChg and starting a Bluetooth wireless tether on the SamChg, the Tethering profile doesn't appear on the tablet (it did for the MotoDroid)
Is there a way to do Bluetooth Tethering with the SamChg?
Thanks,
¿GotJazz?
Wireless Tether for root users isn't really ad-hoc. It sets your phone up as a wireless hub and supports multiple connections. So, I am not sure why the wifi is not working for you. I use it with my Xoom through wifi all the time and it is also running honeycomb.

Hi, Kornsaq - I just tried using WT4RU to connect to my laptop, and my SamChg showed up as a computer-computer ad-hoc network.
Are you doing anything special to get an infrastructure connection?

Hi friends
i installed Wireless tether app from
hxxp://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list?can=2&q=NexusOne
everything works fine my iphone and my PC are able to see my AP and are able to use the tethered internet , the only problem is my friends with Captivate and Vibrant phone cannot see this access point no matter what we tried ,
is there something different in the way the AP is being broadcasted ? and how to fix this issue.
any help appreciated
Thanks
Anil
It is because most of those wireless tethering app can't make your phone as true wi-fi access point (infrastruture mode) but rather use ad-hoc mode. PCs and iPhones can access ad-hoc network but most Android phones can't.

what?!

That means those so-called wireless tethering apps are virtually ueseless. Android, or maybe just Samsung, doesn't support ad-hoc wireless networks.
To make an infrastructure mode wi-fi access point is much more complicated task.

hmm ive used barnacle in ad-hoc mode and it works fine for me for tethering...ive also used the wireless tether proggy in adhoc and it works fine on my captivate...
This will probably be fixed with froyo. Or i hope it is.

It will work fine between a PC and the phone. Ad-hoc is only an issue when trying to connect from phone to phone. Android phones (all that I have used) do not support connecting to an ad-hoc wireless network.
Android does not support ad-hoc wifi. Sad really, i found this out long ago when i had an Archos 5 Android tablet briefly. Every other device/toy i've owned (Nokia N800/N810/N900, iPod Touch, iPad) with the exception of Android devices and the Zune HD do ad-hoc wifi.
Basically, I want to have
Desktop Computer -> USB -> D2G -> WiFi(not 3G) -> Internet
on rooted D2G with stock froyo. Cyanogenmod on my myTouch 3G has this tethering option installed by default. But which app should I use for D2G?
Thanks!
Wasn't wireless tether for root users capable of doing this?

not for WiFi access only 3G. With Wireless Tether the WiFi is used as an access point to 3G not another WiFi router.
What he is trying to do is use the Phone as a wireless card for a PC over USB.
I have never seen an app to do that and it really would just be better to go buy a wireless card for the PC, You will get much better data speeds.
I am pretty sure if you connect bluetooth you can tether to wifi connection. Check this out:
This program enables tethering (via wifi and bluetooth) for "rooted" handsets running android (such as the Android DevPhone 1). Clients (your laptop for example) can connect via wifi (ad-hoc mode) or bluetooth and get access to the internet using the 3G, 2G mobile connection or (in case you are using bluetooth) the wifi connection which is established by the handset.

straight from: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
But you are right you need to connect via BT (not USB...), so it may not work for you.
Hi guys,
installed wifi tether from google code.
it worked, however, noticed a couple things.
1. After turning off wifi tether, I'm still able to detect the adhoc wireless network. (Concerned about battery drain)
2. When having the wifi tether running, it isn't an access point, but an ad hoc network.
Anyone else having these issues? Known issues?
same here
I'm having the same issue basically. My laptop sees the "Androidtether" but it wont connect. It did the same thing with usb tethering too.
Installed Pdanet and it works off and on. I'm in a 4g city...frustrating that I can't get those sweet speeds over to my computer! haha
I am having same issue..anyone have any ideas? I wish it came up as a reg wireless connection instead of the ad hoc network....the stock wifi hotspot comes up correctly

Technically, the SamChg stock WiFi Hotspot is coming up incorrectly as an Infrastructure connection, and the android-wifi-tether app is coming up correctly as an "Ad-Hoc" connection.
It's just not "convenient" for us that the Google android-wifi-tether app only comes up in ad-hoc mode.
From Wikipedia: A wireless ad hoc network is a decentralized type of wireless network. The network is ad hoc because it does not rely on a preexisting infrastructure, such as routers in wired networks or access points in managed (infrastructure) wireless networks.
Personally, I can't think of anything more "decentralized" than a mobile phone.
As far as I know, the latest version found here (3.0-pre14) works, and it has infrastructure mode. Just use the Samsung Fascinate option when setting (Device-Profile) it up and it should work.
wow thanks..that worked beautifully...appreciate it
I have a rooted Samsung Droid Charge and have been enjoying wireless tether programs for awhile. I am still grandfathered in an unlimited data plan with Verizon so it's great. I don't pay for cable internet anymore and 4G is faster than what I was getting.
The only problem was I lost my Wireless network that I enjoyed with cable internet and wireless router and the benefits that come with it (DLNA server, print server etc). Also not all my devices (namely PS3) recognize ad hoc networks (although I did find a wireless tether program that the PS3 recognized)
Basically I want my wireless network back and not have to tether my phone every time to each device.
So I finally found a SOLUTION! The GR 1733 Sapido router. Supposedly you can USB tether or wireless tether your smartphone to it and I can get my wireless network back. Only problems some people are successful and talk about how easy it is, where I am having problems setting it up. I want to either USB tether or wireless tether. When I set to wirelessly tether the SAPIDO router recognizes my Smartphones network but when apply the settings the Sapido router disappears from available networks.
Has anyone found any solution to create a wireless network using whatever equipment and the Droid Charge for internet?
Use Wifi Tether 3.0 pre12, set the device profile to Fascinate, and set the setup method to Softap for Samsung. It works in infrastructure mode then instead of ad-hoc so it looks just like a wireless router.

I have wifi tehter and I am able to use it to make it look like a wireless router. The problem is I want to use a wireless router! LOL. I want to be able to print wirelessly and access my DLNA server on my PS3 etc. Is there a way to do this with that?

PDANet is a USB tether program. It's a bit expensive though for what it does. I would recommend buying it and then trying it instantly, and if it doesn't work get a refund.

In the past i used PDANet but went to opengarden for the wireless tether functionality and then to wifi tether because it allowed me to connect to my PS3.
The only problem with PDANet is you need to tether to a computer with the software. I want to tether to a router so I can have a wireless network. Wireless Print, DNLA servers etc.
Either A:
Internet Connection Sharing from a computer connected to phone either with wifi or usb tether, then out of the computer and into your router.
Or B:
Additional router, configured as wifi client or bridge to phone, into your main router. Phone must be set up in infrastructure for this to work.

I would more than likely go with A: I use WIFI tether from my Samsung Droid Charge to connect my computer to the internet. I then connect a wireless router to my computer via USB or Ethernet cable? Then enable Internet Connection Sharing.
Connect wan port of router to laptop ethernet.
Enable ICS.
the ethernet port on laptop will provide internet to whatever is connected to that port as long as you are getting wifi from phone.
Not hard, but laptop won't be on the same network as stuff connected to router, so I dunno if you can share files from the laptop.
There are many ICS guides out there.

Just buy a wifi bridge and be done with it.
Hi all,
Wondering if anyone knows of an Android app that will allow me to share the lan connection on my tablet via wifi?
Have looked at lots of hotspot type apps but the vast majority are simple shortcuts to an exisiting wifi hotspot function that shares the mobile data connection.
Seems daft to me that I have lan and wifi on my tablet but I'm looking at an ap to connect my other devices!
Thanks
Jin
I didnt understand what u said
If u want to share ur tab net to other use wifi hotspot
If u have wifi connection u can connect via wifi

Are you trying to tether your data connection or do you mean using your tablet as a hub for an existing wifi connection?
What phone do you have?
What carrier?
Did you root your phone?
Have you flashed a new ROM?
Sorry but you were rather vague in your post.

Ok thanks. To clarify my tablet (not phone and therefore no carrier involved) has both ethernet and wifi I would like to use the ethernet to connect to my network/internet and then broadcast that connection via wifi.
This is exactly the same thing a normal wifi hotspot does except it broadcasts the mobile data connection as opposed to a wired connection.
The tablet has been flashed with Tims 6 ROM
Don't now if it's possible. On phone it;s not possible to share be a hotspot when you're on wifi. I guess it uses the same piece of hardware. That might also be the case for you with the LAN.
BTW try talking to this guy :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1735708
he had sort of the same question perhaps he figured it out?
edit: This is also you i now see.. never mind

How do you have your tablet connected to the internet, wireless or wired? If wired, how did you do that? If it's wireless, you're just using your tablet as a signal booster.
What i'm confused on is if you connected your tablet wireless and want to connect other devices to your tablet's "wifi" which in essence is wifi, why can't that device connect to the same internet as your tablet?
I think we're all a bit confused on what you're trying to accomplish.
Sorry folks struggling here with what you don't get (not being smart just confused)
I have an Android tablet that has both wifi and an ethernet connection, I connect to my network via ethernet and want to use that connection to then create a wifi hotspot for my other devices to connect to.
I already do this with my win7 laptop and am looking for an app to do the same on the tablet.
If my terminology is correct I need to bridge the lan connection to the wifi adapter?
