Wireless tether AP not visible on other Galaxy Phones` - Captivate General

Hi friends
i installed Wireless tether app from
hxxp://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list?can=2&q=NexusOne
everything works fine my iphone and my PC are able to see my AP and are able to use the tethered internet , the only problem is my friends with Captivate and Vibrant phone cannot see this access point no matter what we tried ,
is there something different in the way the AP is being broadcasted ? and how to fix this issue.
any help appreciated
Thanks
Anil

It is because most of those wireless tethering app can't make your phone as true wi-fi access point (infrastruture mode) but rather use ad-hoc mode. PCs and iPhones can access ad-hoc network but most Android phones can't.

what?!

That means those so-called wireless tethering apps are virtually ueseless. Android, or maybe just Samsung, doesn't support ad-hoc wireless networks.
To make an infrastructure mode wi-fi access point is much more complicated task.

hmm ive used barnacle in ad-hoc mode and it works fine for me for tethering...ive also used the wireless tether proggy in adhoc and it works fine on my captivate...

This will probably be fixed with froyo. Or i hope it is.

It will work fine between a PC and the phone. Ad-hoc is only an issue when trying to connect from phone to phone. Android phones (all that I have used) do not support connecting to an ad-hoc wireless network.

Android does not support ad-hoc wifi. Sad really, i found this out long ago when i had an Archos 5 Android tablet briefly. Every other device/toy i've owned (Nokia N800/N810/N900, iPod Touch, iPad) with the exception of Android devices and the Zune HD do ad-hoc wifi.

Reverse Tethering?

At work, there's no Wi-Fi and no T-Mobile signal.
Is there a way to use my PC's network connection to provide data to my phone? I have a rooted Android phone.
I´m also looking for this.
It is the same thing we can do with ActiveSync in Windows Mobile: you get internet access trough your PC...
I hope someone can help us with any clue.
Thank you.

Like USB tethering? I thought there was a USB tethering app on the market.

Hi both of you!
It's called ad hoc network, if you have Vista or Windows 7, do like this:
Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center -> Set up a new connection or network -> Set up a wireless ad hoc (computer to computer network) -> Follow instructions!
Good luck
You forgot to mention the tiny problem that Android has do damn Ad-Hoc support....
honestly just try starting your own network go grab a wifi dongle thats capable and go from there that or get a wireless router and try that sharing the internet connection to the router OR bluetooth connection if your phone is capable ! many different ways ive tried them all but usb tethering ive never heard of out side of wm os
It is possible...
I wrote about this before. It is possible to do via usb cable if you use Sense as it is a standard feature in Sense connection... Just plug in and you can choose to use PC internet connection.
I have done it a lot with my PC

My custom rom (x10 mini pro) support ad hoc as far as i know.
Connectify
If you are using Windows7, you might want to take a look at Connectify. Just google "connectify for windows". I can't post outside links yet.
Direct from their website:
Take any Internet connection and share it wirelessly with no additional hardware, wires, plugs, or chargers
Easily connect any number of Wi-Fi enabled devices to your network including desktop computers, laptops, phones, gaming systems, and more
Don't break the bank paying for multiple Wi-Fi connections on the road, Connectify is ad-supported and free to download and use.

Adhoc can be made to work
Check this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755254
Of course this would need a wifi dongle in your work PC, will admins allow that?
in the newer roms with gingerbread it's an option to do this when you plug in your phone.

[Q] Bluetooth Tethering on SamChg?

I have an Android Honeycomb Tablet (Asus Transformer), which blocks ad-hoc WiFi connections. So, the Wireless Tethering for Root Users app won't help me for a WiFi connection. Barnacle also seems to do ad-hoc WiFi connections, so no help there.
But, I used to be able to do Bluetooth tethering to the tablet using the Wireless Tethering for Root Users app just fine from my MotoDroid. For some reason, I can't with my SamChg. After pairing the tablet with my SamChg and starting a Bluetooth wireless tether on the SamChg, the Tethering profile doesn't appear on the tablet (it did for the MotoDroid)
Is there a way to do Bluetooth Tethering with the SamChg?
Thanks,
¿GotJazz?
Wireless Tether for root users isn't really ad-hoc. It sets your phone up as a wireless hub and supports multiple connections. So, I am not sure why the wifi is not working for you. I use it with my Xoom through wifi all the time and it is also running honeycomb.

Hi, Kornsaq - I just tried using WT4RU to connect to my laptop, and my SamChg showed up as a computer-computer ad-hoc network.
Are you doing anything special to get an infrastructure connection?

[Q] Wifi tether broadcast issue?

Hi guys,
installed wifi tether from google code.
it worked, however, noticed a couple things.
1. After turning off wifi tether, I'm still able to detect the adhoc wireless network. (Concerned about battery drain)
2. When having the wifi tether running, it isn't an access point, but an ad hoc network.
Anyone else having these issues? Known issues?
same here
I'm having the same issue basically. My laptop sees the "Androidtether" but it wont connect. It did the same thing with usb tethering too.
Installed Pdanet and it works off and on. I'm in a 4g city...frustrating that I can't get those sweet speeds over to my computer! haha
I am having same issue..anyone have any ideas? I wish it came up as a reg wireless connection instead of the ad hoc network....the stock wifi hotspot comes up correctly

Technically, the SamChg stock WiFi Hotspot is coming up incorrectly as an Infrastructure connection, and the android-wifi-tether app is coming up correctly as an "Ad-Hoc" connection.
It's just not "convenient" for us that the Google android-wifi-tether app only comes up in ad-hoc mode.
From Wikipedia: A wireless ad hoc network is a decentralized type of wireless network. The network is ad hoc because it does not rely on a preexisting infrastructure, such as routers in wired networks or access points in managed (infrastructure) wireless networks.
Personally, I can't think of anything more "decentralized" than a mobile phone.
As far as I know, the latest version found here (3.0-pre14) works, and it has infrastructure mode. Just use the Samsung Fascinate option when setting (Device-Profile) it up and it should work.
wow thanks..that worked beautifully...appreciate it

WiFi Hotspot Tethering Issue

I am having difficulty getting our XOOM tablet to connect to WiFi via a mobile hotspot being provided by a Galaxy Nexus. Both the XOOm and Nexus are running ICS and are not rooted and are stock.
The XOOM sees the WiFi network being provided. However, it will not obtain an IP.
I have no issue getting other devices, including another Nexus, and Transformer Prime (both ICS) to connect to the same hotspot that the XOOM can not connect too.
Does anyone else have this issue or know how to fix it?

Stock Android doesn't support ad-hoc networks, which stock tethering is. Guessing the devices that work are running custom roms.

The Nexus which is providing the mobile wifi hotspot (via Verizon subscription) is running a stock version of Android (4.0.2) and is not rooted. The devices which can connect to this hotspot are another Nexus of similar stock version, a Dell M4500 laptop, and an Asus Transformer Prime running the latest 4.0.3 version of Android as provided by Asus.
As mentioned, the XOOM is running the latest version of stock ICS as provided by Motorola.
The only device that cannot connect to the hotspot is the XOOM. I do not see where I can choose between an ad-hoc network or an infrastructure network within the wifi hotspot settings.
Also, like I mentioned before, the XOOM has no issue with connecting to the Nexus if it shares it's internet via Bluetooth, it only has an issue with obtaining a connection via the wifi tethering mobile hotspot.
What is really confusing to me is that the same wifi hotspot which the XOOM has trouble connecting to, the Prime connects with no problem at all.
Produce a logcat of the xoom attempting to connect.

Prime isn't running stock Android.
(There is no option in stock android for infrastructure or ad-hoc with tethering, nor is such a distinction relevant with Bluetooth)

Indeed, my description of "stock" is not accurate. When I describe these devices as "stock" I am receding to them as having an unmodified ROM as it was provided by the respective device manufacturer.
So you are correct that my Prime is not running a true stock version of Android. My bad.
ZANSHING1: Is it even possible to connect a wifi XOOM to a mobile wifi hotspots (specifically, to one being provided by a Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus which does have the appropriate hotspots feature as part of the phone plan)?
BIGRUSHDOG: where do I need to go to obtain the "logcat" file you are requesting?

I think you will have to use one of the tethering apps that provides a full infrastructure hotspot.
This is the only one I'm aware of that does. There may be more. But it has some requirements for the kernel.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
I've been tethering my Xoom to my Bionic for months. And was tethering to my Droid X before that. I had to flash a ad-hoc wifi supplicant through clockworkmod recovery to get tethering to work on my Xoom. Or. If you have root explorer, I assume you'd just back up stock wifi supplicant file and replace with one that is modified, like I had to do on my galaxy tab. You'd still need to be rooted to do that though. Stock isn't going to cut it.

So....if I am understanding these responses correctly, the XOOM will be able to access a wifi hotspot which is provided by a (Android) phone ONLY if it (the XOOM) is rooted and has certain files either added or modified in order to connect to the aforementioned wifi hotspot?

Sorta kinda There are two flavors in which a device may be able to broadcast a wifi tether signal. Ad-hoc and Infrastructure. When the broadcasting device is in Infrastructure mode, it basically simulates a full wireless router. Any device should be able to connect as a client. Ad-hoc is a bit different. It is basically a point to point connection in which there's no real routing. Its actually complex but I'm trying to use layman's terms If your phone is broadcasting ad-hoc, the xoom currently can not connect. By default, Android can not connect to adhoc, whether stock or custom rom. For complex reasons, this is especially the case with ics. So it is necessary to determine what type of signal your phone broadcasts. Please describe in detail how you initiative your tether on the broadcasting device.

The broadcasting device is a Verizon Galaxy Nexus running the latest 4.0.2 version of Android as provided by Verizon. The phone is not rooted and we do pay for the tethering service offered by Verizon.
In regards to how we turn on the wifi tethering, we complete the folksingers steps:
SETTINGS> More... (under WIRELESS & NETWORKS)> Tethering & portable hotspots> Portable WiFi hotspot (turn on by activating the green check within the box)
In regards to how the WiFi is Configured, we are using the WPA2 PSK security option.
...and as I mentioned before, my Asus Transformer Prime has no issue connecting...nor does my laptop....only the XOOM has a problem.

[Q] Droid Charge and the GR 1733 SAPIDO router

I have a rooted Samsung Droid Charge and have been enjoying wireless tether programs for awhile. I am still grandfathered in an unlimited data plan with Verizon so it's great. I don't pay for cable internet anymore and 4G is faster than what I was getting.
The only problem was I lost my Wireless network that I enjoyed with cable internet and wireless router and the benefits that come with it (DLNA server, print server etc). Also not all my devices (namely PS3) recognize ad hoc networks (although I did find a wireless tether program that the PS3 recognized)
Basically I want my wireless network back and not have to tether my phone every time to each device.
So I finally found a SOLUTION! The GR 1733 Sapido router. Supposedly you can USB tether or wireless tether your smartphone to it and I can get my wireless network back. Only problems some people are successful and talk about how easy it is, where I am having problems setting it up. I want to either USB tether or wireless tether. When I set to wirelessly tether the SAPIDO router recognizes my Smartphones network but when apply the settings the Sapido router disappears from available networks.
Has anyone found any solution to create a wireless network using whatever equipment and the Droid Charge for internet?
Use Wifi Tether 3.0 pre12, set the device profile to Fascinate, and set the setup method to Softap for Samsung. It works in infrastructure mode then instead of ad-hoc so it looks just like a wireless router.

PDANet is a USB tether program. It's a bit expensive though for what it does. I would recommend buying it and then trying it instantly, and if it doesn't work get a refund.

In the past i used PDANet but went to opengarden for the wireless tether functionality and then to wifi tether because it allowed me to connect to my PS3.
The only problem with PDANet is you need to tether to a computer with the software. I want to tether to a router so I can have a wireless network. Wireless Print, DNLA servers etc.
Either A:
Internet Connection Sharing from a computer connected to phone either with wifi or usb tether, then out of the computer and into your router.
Or B:
Additional router, configured as wifi client or bridge to phone, into your main router. Phone must be set up in infrastructure for this to work.

I would more than likely go with A: I use WIFI tether from my Samsung Droid Charge to connect my computer to the internet. I then connect a wireless router to my computer via USB or Ethernet cable? Then enable Internet Connection Sharing.
Connect wan port of router to laptop ethernet.
Enable ICS.
the ethernet port on laptop will provide internet to whatever is connected to that port as long as you are getting wifi from phone.
Not hard, but laptop won't be on the same network as stuff connected to router, so I dunno if you can share files from the laptop.
There are many ICS guides out there.

Just buy a wifi bridge and be done with it.
