I was curious to know if anyone was using their Thunderbolt for their home ISP. I have been using it today as a trial run since it worked so well for me when I was out of town. If I can save a few hundred dollars a year and get close to the same, if not the same speeds with LTE as my source of home internet access, it doesn't really make much sense to me to keep Comcast around. I am rooted and using Wireless Tether. Mobile Hotspot and its data cap can suck it. I called Comcast and asked how much data I used, the past 3 months were all under 25GB. Thoughts?
All I can say is do it while you can - I know I would be if I lived in an area that had better than 3G coverage.

I've been thinking about the same exact solution for about a month. Time Warner is charging us $99 for 50/5mbps "wideband" connection, and I'm pretty much getting the same speeds at home on my Bolt. Actually my uploads goes up to 10mbps so it's even better. I think I will probably end up downgrading the cable service to the cheapest $30 a month and see how the Bolt is holding up during the next billing cycle. I've used 53GB on my Bolt during the past month. Speeds still going strong.
nice thoughts, but when there are a few million devices on the network I don't think reliability will be there to be honest. It all depends on what you are doing, and how many computers you have at home.
If you are me and have 10 devices that have internet access at your house, I doubt thunderbolt will be the solution for me. I doubt the hotspot will give me enough range to cover my whole house, if I was alone then it would be a different scenario to be honest and I would probably do it.
I have 2 NAS servers at home that is used for remote access so that right there kills it for me since me and my thunderbolt cant be in two different places at the same time.
even if I was able to get a 4g lte router to plug my thunderbolt in to, they just dont have the horsepower as other routers to provide enough bandwidth for my home network.

I should have clarified that. I usually only have one thing connected at a time. Mostly my Macbook, sometimes I might connect my PS3 and watch netflix or something. My internet demands aren't really that high.
Been thinking along these same lines. Time Warner Cable - what a rip off. I barely watch TV and have only basic cable. That plus the ISP and speed boost is $100+/mo. What we need is someway to have the Tbolt provide network access to an existing or new type of wireless router. The Bolt would basically replace the cable modem but not the WiFI router (if you have two different boxes). This would make the transition for folks who have multiple computers, NAS, DLNA devices, etc. almost transparent and probably totally workable.
Cradlepoint? If you can plug in a USB cellular modem, perhaps you can connect your phone. I have an MBR-1000 here at work that I may spend some time playing with later if I have some time. . .
Seth
Dont expect to get away with it forever... once the wireless hotspot trial runs out I think Verizon will be cracking down on rooted users using tethering. If you really want to replace your cable line with LTE through the Thunderbolt your going to have to pay the $20 a month and then I believe you only get 2GB
You do realize that using your phone as a hotspot was never intended to replace your home ISP, right?
Why do you think all these companies are now starting to do tiered data?
I have a netgear wnr3500l and flashed dd-wrt to it. It allows you to bridge two wireless connections or have it join another wireless network. That would allow you to use your TB as your ISP on your home network.
I work from home so its not an option for me, and I have nearly 20 devices on my network.

Me, too. The Thunderbolt as an ISP is a decent idea, and very fast when used, but unless you live alone and have no "always on" internet devices (Servers/Netflix Streaming) then everytime you leave with your cell phone, no one at your house has internet (assuming you got rid of your other ISP - of course, if you didn't you would still be paying for two and defeating the purpose)
I guess it depends on the individuals scenario. I have a maximum of 2 devices connected at a time and they are in the same room. I only live with my dog so I don't need a stationary ISP. Obviously it wouldn't really work for a family or a person with a very high demand such as a home office.

Agreed - If I wouldn't get in trouble from the Mrs. about taking the internet with me, I'd be all over this provided that $20 still gets unlimited tethering and not the 2GB cap some were talking about. Guess it's more of a wait-and-see approach.
Engenius EOR7550 does it
I start out by saying please do not everyone start dumping your fixed ISP bandwidth needs on the TB because it will cause problems from system and bandwidth issues to policy changes with how VZW deals with all of us, resulting in a bad experience with a good system. That said, the EOR7550 is a dual radio commercial grade outdoor repeater. It would be the perfect device for such a test as it is meant to establish a link with one wireless network and repeat it out as another. I use these units quite often to make RV park wi-fi go all over the place.
What is the big deal..
If you can live with the total pain in the ass of always having your phone be your internet then go for it.
I like to have my internet always on and on (to download stuff) when my phone and I are not there.

If you are just going to browse web pages, maybe check email.. then its something to consider.
But 25gig? I'm guessing you download files, stream stuff, etc.
So then you have to think...
Well the mobile hot spot feature on the TB is only FREE until May 15. After that they will likely charge... either $20 for 2gig like 3G MHS is, or possibly more. i.e. more data used = more $$ per month, so that could add up quick.
VZW's TOS for using the "unlimited data" plan with smart phones stipulates that it is not for tethering, and meant to only be used for the phone, and has some other things around "acceptable use". Rooting and doing "un-authorized tethering" and racking up 25 gig per month might draw attention to yourself. So if VZW does start cracking down on this, you'll be right in the cross hairs and violating their TOS.
Then there is the rumor that VZW is throttling data for the higher data users... so where does 25gig come in? will you be able to live with being throttled if it hits you?
Not to mention having to keep your phone plugged in at all times, since battery wont last long using data constantly.
At that point is it still worth it?
I might suggest you'd be better if you think about brokering a deal with your neighbor to share his/her internet via wifi and splitting the cost instead...

+1. Just the thought is a recipe for disaster. Tiered data is on it's way and suggestions such as this are a good part of the reason why.

I'm temporary assigned to Cheyenne, WY and just got my Charge since my DroidX bit the dust. Can't wait to get back to Orlando which is covered in LTE but in the meantime I'm stuck on 3G.
My issue is that my data icon keeps going to 3G with a little D underneath it which means i have no data feed and when I do something that requires data, like the market, it doesn't always kick back in right away, which causes some apps not to work.
Has anybody else experienced this issue or am I just on a crappy tower? I did upgrade to ED2 in hopes that that would fix it.

Same issue - different state
Mods sorry I double posted. Please take down my similar thread. Here is what I posted.
I have a Thunderbolt and really enjoy 95% of how it works - except of course the battery life. So in an effort to retain the function of the Thunderbolt and improve battery life I picked up a Droid Charge. The screen is FANTASTIC and it runs almost as fast as the Bolt.
Here comes the big BUT!! But the data connection falls off a lot and I have to do a reset to get the 3g data connection back. There are some of other smaller things but the big BUT makes the Charge unusable for me.
Anyone a quick fix to this issue?
I am surprised this issue hasn't been reported more widely.
Experience tells me that Sammy ROM fixes are sssllloooww to come along.
So unless there is something I am missing - back goes the Sammy.
Also another quick question - anyone get Skype to work?
Thanks
I am having a bunch of connection issues as well. It seems like the 3g connection is spotty and handing off from 4g to 3g is worse. To make matters worse, if I am transferring anything when the issue occurs the transfer is toast and the app needs to be killed before it behaves again.
As for Skype, the one in the marker works (the non VZ one) so far. Haven't tested voice, but VZ ver wouldn't even run.
I have had the same problem with my thunderbolt so I returned it and got the charge and haven't had as much of a data problem and the battery life is so much better than the bolt.
No data issues here. But there also isn't LTE offered in the area so I guess I wouldn't be experiencing 4g/3g swapping ever...
In fact, I'm actually experiencing much better connectivity (wifi, 3g, gps, voice) than I was on my Fascinate.
No 3G here either but still erratic
Just to clarify, 4g is not available in my primary area. My phone has a good solid lock on a good solid signal then BOOM no more data.
Given what some of the others have said - it sounds hardware related.
Probable best to just take it back.
Yup, shoddy 3G
I'm having issues with sporadic 3G connectivity as well. Previously, I owned a Droid Eris and never had any issues with 3G in my area leading me to believe it's a problem with the Charge. I don't live in a 4G area so there is no interference there. I'll be mid-app and boom, it drops for about 2 minutes or until I toggle the data switch off/on.
Glad I'm not the only one, but still very annoying.
Aside from my few hardware/design complaints of the Charge, THIS issue is by far the worst that directly affects the user experience.
Samsung, are you reading this thread? Please help us!
I'm having the same issue. I was about to call verizon to make sure there were no outages. Places I normally have no issue maintaining 3g coverage I'm dropping down to 1X.
i had the same problem, i went to verizon and they reactivated my phone and now my phone works great with no problems. go to verizon and tell them to reactivate your phone, they may also give u a new sim card too.
Went to Verizon
Yep - went to Verizon also. Left the Charge there. We'll see where it goes but for now too many negatives. As I said earlier, I really like the Sammy screens started with the Fascinate. I just don't feel like waiting around for the slow train that Sammy/Verizon always seem to be on for fixes. Hopefully I am wrong soon but for now I am right.

It's a network and/or modem firmware issue - the Thunderbolt is plagued with the EXACT same problems.

OT F.E. Warren? My Cousin was stationed there, he was a guard at the Minuteman III ICBM Silo's and Launch Facilities, are you on the base or at the Missile's? I hope the deployment goes well! OT
Back on Topic, I noticed that little D underneath the 3G today and thought "what the?" lol. It was only there for a few seconds, so I dismissed it, I'll keep a watch on it though and report back any data issues.
I'm on base thank Jebus, I work behind a desk in the Communications SQ. As for the D, I went into vzw and they say claim it's normal. Personally I think it has something to do with the bad infrastructure we have in Wyoming, causing major power drain issues on my phone.

My wife's droid charge is having very bad issues with the 3g dropping and never coming back. Were in el paso, TX.
Same issue here in Orlando. 4G to 3G drops data...very annoying....wife is ready to return for iPhone4. Help please! Don't want fruit in house.
Having the same problem in Alabama, don't have 3G yet and yet I get the D and then 1X and it completely drops out. Last night I lost data completely and wouldn't come back up even after I rebooted the phone. I wasn't sure if this was due to the battery being about < 5% (I was trying to kill it) or what. About to boot my phone back up and see how it does. I had just switched WiFi off in my apt. and never got the 3G data stream.
I have it set to CDMA only since there is no 4G in my area right now, don't know if that really helps or hurts the situation though.
I actually thought the D meant that something about the stream being dormant because I do get it a lot of times but when I refresh facebook or something, 3G immediately comes back up.

How is your data doing lately, any better?
It's not getting any better but I talked to tech support and they said it's a known issue. Guess there'll be an ED3 soon.

I hope so. I would really like to keep the Droid Charge.
I can't seem to find a straight answer on Google for this. My phone's wifi is randomly disconnecting from my home network. I'll connect it, 3 hours later it's on 4G. I go to my "Wireless and Network Settings" and Wifi is enabled, as soon as I go to "Wi-Fi Settings" it reconnects to my network. It's just a hassle. Also, my speaker will randomly sound like utter ****. As if the treble was boosted 50db. Sometimes during the middle of my phone ringing. It goes from my normal ring tone "deedle deedle doo" to "BLEEDLEBLEEDLEBLOOD." Now, both of these issues are intermittent so I would have no real way of showing a rep in person unless it was coincidentally. Also, I have a slight dent on two corners of my phone, but both of these issues occurred before the cosmetic damage. How would I go about getting ATT to replace my phone? I've heard it's free, then I read the policy on my $8/mo insurance and it said $120 or something, idk.
I think your best bet is to call AT&T and see what they say. If you're within 30 days of purchase just take it to where ever you bought it. If not, they you should go though AT&T.
I am not within the 30 days.
As for your wifi problem, I believe you have the "Night time battery saver" which at night hours (or so) it will turn off the wifi when the phone is not being used, and as soon as you unlock the screen the wifi will turn on automatically.
Hello
I work for at&t. I can tell you this any phone you buy from Att ( cept the iPhone) has a one year warranty. It doesn't matter how many scratches your phone may have really. As long as your screen isn't cracked and you haven't spilled liquid on it Att will replace it.
Now if youve had the phone for more than 30 days. You can't return it to the store. You have to get a warranty exchange via customer service over the phone. So dial 611. Tell them your phone won't connect to wifi, they will ask you to format the phone tell them you already have, and in 2 to 3 days you'll have a shiny new atrix 2.
Hope that helps.

I talked to ATT warranty services today. They tried telling me that both issues were caused by a degrading cell tower 25 miles from my location. What does that have to do with my phone not being able to hold Wifi and my speaker sounding gargly? And my phone works fine on the mobile network. She said she would send my phone an OTA update and firmware update and I'd get a call Monday. Coincidentally that same day they said this cell tower would be fixed. Haven't gotten it any updates. And no I'm not on night time battery saver. It happens during the day as well, periodically.

Have I tried what?
The first two weeks I had this phone there were no problems. I have a 360 and 3 iPhones connected to this router as well with no issues.
Well, then you should exchange your phone.
There is a post somewhere here that says A2 is not compatible with 5ghz or something like that. Try using Wifi Analyzer and figure out if your neighbor's router is running on the same channel as your router. Crowded channels = drop. I'm also having problem with Auto Connect feature, but it connects after 10 mins of being in the house. Once I'm connected though I never get a dropped Wifi. It would help if you post the manufacturer and model number of your router.
About the speakers yeah A2 is not built for music enthusiast. My speakers mumbles when i put someone on speaker at full volume lol. I think reviews of the A2 mention something about the speakers not on par with the A1.
After a couple weeks without much trouble, my connection to my home wifi started getting really hit or miss. Tons of disconnects, Atrix wifi antenna just turning itself off, etc. finally tonight I dusted off an old wifi router I had taken back from my parents and hooked it into my Live Wire network (power line networking) on the other side of the house from my existing router. Haven't had a drop in a while now. First router might be hickey, or dying, or the Atrix just wasn't handling a weak signal well.

I had this issue with mine and exchanged within the 30 days. I generally add in that it's rebooting often even after a factory reset. That usually makes the exchange foolproof.

That's my question, since I'm passed the 30 days, is it free? Because with Sprint even when I paid insurance like I am now it was ~$100 to replace a smartphone.

Cool, I'll try throwing that in there as well!
have you tried going to the at&t store to show them what is wrong with your phone so you don't have to explain everything over the phone. They took my phone before and exchanged right at the store ^_^
Try to boost your wifi, check this out http://www.labnol.org/internet/extend-wifi-wireless-network-range/13534/ not a detailed explaination but i hope that helps.
To test your wifi - try to stay within 6 feet range with out any blockage to see if you will get disconnected - if you get disconnected then go to att store and replace ^_^
Ok again. Its free to do a warranty exchange. you have a year to do it. Try calling customer service again. I know it may sound strange but give them less information next time. I wouldn't mention anything about garbled call quality or anything like that, because they are trained to automatically assume there is an issue with either your SIM or a tower nearby.
Next time you call only mention that your phone won't connect to wifi and you've already done a hard reset. Explain that you want a warranty replacement. Like I said it may be backward but the less information you give the better so essentially they can't create a situation where they will tell you its a network issue and not your device (because it sounds like your phone to me.)
The only time you're charged for a replacement phone is when its an insurance issue which is another matter entirely. Like I said in post before as long as your screen isn't cracked and your liquid indicator isn't red ( the little square sticker under your battery it should still be white.) Then Att will replace the phone free of charge.

The only thing is he's mentioned that he's had this particular phone for more than 30. In store we don't have the ability to exchange a phone outside of 30 days (unless the store also happens to have a warranty device center connected to it which is rare.) So most likely he has to have it exchanged over the phone via CS.

Yea, I figured as much about the less is more theory. They're suppose to call me in a few hours, if they don't I'll call them and use this method. I appreciate all the help. No screen cracks and the water damage indicator is white. I should be good!
And to clarify, the insurance covers it in cases where the screen is cracked, water damage, lost/stolen, etc? Basically anything that would be my fault.
Also, physically, how does the exchange work?
Hi All,
I seem to be losing data connectivity when on my Microcell at home.
Normally this wouldn't be an issue because I'd just hop on the Wi-Fi - but this leaves me unable to receive MMS messages.
Please see attached logcat for details. Note the issues that start happening at: 04-15 07:05:39.638
Nobody?
Is there another forum or category this should be placed into?
Your not the only one that has connectivity issues. There is a post here in the q and a for gsm settings if that what microcell uses u can give it a shot
Sent from my SM-N915P using XDA Free mobile app
I just searched the terms "apn" and "microcell"
Nothing of use came up.
Which device Q&A was it listed under?

here is the thread. i cant tell you it will work for you i use a cdma device and never tried it on mine

hello,
i was in ur boat for the last couple of months troubleshooting all types of reasoning why my mms and visual voicemail, would not go out thru the MCell. To make a long , long, story short, i swapped out my DPH153 ( the upside down "Y" white microcell) to the newer DPH154 ( Shorter, Black, and no PC port ). Being i have had the previous MCell for a couple of years, i had no warranty. Although, i disagreed that if AT&T made some change to the MCell on the backend or wherever, and screwed MMS, why should i have to pay anyway. After talking to enough reps that kept telling me i need to go buy a new one, ( make sure u have at least an hour of spare time before u get on the phone )they eventually sent me over to the Retention department. i have 6 lines on my account, so i guess i was worth saving. Retention was super nice, didnt even care what my reasoning was for the new MCell, just wanted me to be a happy customer, which after being on hold for so long, i greatly appreciated. the deal was for me to go purchase one at an AT&T store, and once activated, to call back , and they would credit my account. it was a little incovienient, but worth saving the $150.00. i went and got it, activated it, which took minutes, i was suprised at that, called back in, was on hold for another 30 minutes, finally credited my account the $150.00. Happy Customer.
Now, the real question.... did it work ?
yes.
yes, it did. The first thing i noticed when my old one wasnt working is that the data speeds were extremely S-L-O-W. i have 6 phones here, all different, so i knew it wasnt a phone issue, or a software problem, not on all 6. Smartphones are getting better n better cameras, the file sizes are getting bigger n bigger, even when it compresses. the compression is smaller, but its still a growing file size. Regardless, when i was in range of old MCell, i turned off wifi, and ran a speedtest. i mean it claims 3G, lets see. so minimum with full bars, id say about 1.3mb is acceptable. my speed was around .3mb , no 1 in front. Now normally, i would have never noticed this, cuz at home, most use wifi which is blazing, and it doesnt eat ur data. it then made sense why pics wouldnt send, im trying to send this huge file through this tiny hole, and it would just fail, bottom line. Ran a speedtest on new MCell, 3.40Mbps. very acceptable. sent multiple pics, no issues. Appears a little slower, about 10 seconds or so for sending to complete, only because of the data. When im out in the wild, and have LTE, pics send in seconds, but of course, its 54Mbps or more. i just realized my short story got kinda long, sorry. Hope that helps you.
So I've been waiting to get internet at my apartment, and have been using my one m8 tethered as home internet (thanks to the help on this forum getting a ROM running on it that lets me use the mobile hotspot).
Its working great. However, i'm at 120GB with 5 days to go. Being that this would be, under most carrier plans, an insane amount of data... I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with this. I definitely haven't seen any throttling or slowdown. Runs PS4 games, streaming, whatever. I was actually at 60GB 5 days into the month and have made a concereted effort to slow down lol, otherwise I might be in the 300-400GB range. That said, it really isn't too bad.
I actually just ordered time warner cable for $40/mo, so I guess I'm moving on anyway. But I'm curious if anyone has been doing this for an extended period and if Verizon ever made a stink.
Someone I know does. He canceled all wired tv, phone, & internet service to his home and has been using his verizon S4 for it all for over a year now. He's on the old unlimited data plan. It is apparently working well for him but he had to get a special wifi card for his PC to use the hotspot from the phone. He uses a wifi capable "smart" bluray player to get all his TV programming from youtube, netflix, and amazon prime. He said it was a learning curve to find all the tv programming he used to watch on cable but he has been able to get it all, albeit, at a later release date then the mainstream networks' prime time debuts.
I do it, but with T-Mobile.
Just one thing though....constant wifi tethering will destroy your phone. Specifically the battery, but all that heat and energy use can't be good for the rest of it either. I ruined 2 batteries on my Galaxy Light in less than a year. Ruined 2 Motorola Razr Maxxes this way too. You don't want to be doing this with a phone like the M8 that is practically impossible to repair.
If you choose to go this route, pick up a cheap (rootable, obviously) phone with a removable battery, like a Galaxy S3 to use as your "home" phone.
The S4 is better then the S3 in that regard because it supports that newer faster LTE (aws?), the wifi hardware is quite a bit more advanced (faster), and the repairs (if ever necessary) are easier. Wifi tether does use a lot of power but you'll be plugged in for that most of the time, especially at home. The circuitry holds up just fine in the S4 as long as you're not aggravating the situation with over-volting / over-clocking.
I had been using my old Droid 4 as a home gateway/router before I got the One working. Perhaps I could just use that as my home router.. it worked well enough but would cut out occasionally (annoying during games... the One doesn't do that). If anything the Droid 4 seemed to have a stronger wifi signal when it worked though... better range, just as fast as the M8.
Do you know how much data your friend goes through?
The Droid 4 does/did get really hot while tethering. To the point I'd usually rest it on a cold can of soda or something while using it, lol. The One doesn't get nearly as hot.
Keep in mind that the power consumption and heat generation of the screen still dwarfs that of the wifi module. While using the phone as a home internet gateway the screen will likely be off most of the time.
I don't know about his data useage quantity but he's almost always got something streaming video of some kind. Its probably not ideal for serious gaming because the signal does drop out from time to time. Toggling airplane mode on and off again reestablishes a full-speed connection pretty quick but it would be disruptive in a game.
well. my signal on the One hasn't dropped and I've been logging a lot of Destiny this month. Sometimes you'll get a little lag but it isn't bad.
Just saw that VZW is hiking unlimited prices $20/mo... wonder if that'll get challenged by the FCC (like throttling etc): http://money.cnn.com/2015/10/08/tec...ted-plan-increase/index.html?iid=hp-stack-dom
I have old UDP and use my phone hotspot to devices it in my motorhome. All was good until 2 months ago when I used 50-60gb and they throttled me since. No 4g at all from home tower. get 4g elsewhere .
How do I approach customer service to get un-throttled? New reports say they are not throttling anymore.
Thanks.
Try cycling airplane mode on/off to reestablish a 4G data connection.

Tried that 50 million times. She a no work! Others get 4g at my place not me.
This is my SOLUTION

i would just call them and explain your problem as you have here, and leave out the throttle part.
back up your data firs, they will likely have you factory reset at some point.
it could be a problem with your phone, or a problem with the towers in your area. they will determine which.
its very unlikely they are throttling. they wouldnt reduce the 4g signal output on an entire tower to do it, and they are actually prohibited from doing it by the fcc.

.
Thank you. Ended up swapping Sim then got consistent signal a few days later. No idea what they did on their end. Swapped Sim to 6P and all is good now.
I did this when I was doing my internship. I mainly just streamed Netflix and only hit 256GB that month. There was a time Verizon was throttling my data even though they wouldn't admit it until I eventually got transferred to an engineer . None of their support tiers could answer my questions and kept telling me they didn't have the capability to throttle so the problem is my fault. I somehow eventually talked to an engineer at Verizon and the engineer didn't directly admit it but rather, he implied that they do have that capability and the support techs were lying. One tech blamed "tower service in the area" and another tech blamed the unlocked bootloader on my 2013 Moto X DEV for causing the connectivity issues even though I was running the stock ROM and even restored everything back to stock prior to calling. Hahaha.. The funny thing is that the connection went back to normal directly after that call ended. Weird how that works....
