[Q] APKTool Question for Infuse - Samsung Infuse 4G

I am trying to modify gtg465x's version of TouchWiz30Launcher.apk. All I am doing is modifying launcher:iconColumnCount to 5 in both layout-land\launcher.xml and layout-port\launcher.xml.
It builds fine. I am using both framework-res and twframework-res in APKTool.
When I copy onto my phone it doesn't launch at all.
If I am in way over my head, don't be shy just tell me. Otherwise any guidance would be appreciated.

Oh sorry, thought you were using APK Manager. Anyways, use APK Manager. It's sort of a front end for APKTool and will be easier.

you don't sign system apks...i think thats what he's trying to get at. Try using apk manager 4.9. it is a dos-based gui that makes apktool do your bidding...including warning you that system apks do not need to be signed.
EDIT: Lol. jinx

Can you make app drawer to continuously scroll instead of paging, but I think it is better scrolling continuously sideways instead of scroll up and down. Because sideways scroll. You see more app right? Or may be a bad idea? I hope they can make an app like the Go SMS PRO where you can switch the paging of app to wave, roll, cube etc.

try this:
* open the original .apk with WinZip or whatever zip opener you like
* drop the changed files into the zip without unziping.
* push to the phone and try it.

i did try to edit the resources.. it won't work also (with apktool). I did try just d and then b. same problem. not showing on launcher

May need to remove data and odex, repush to system/app, and logcat the startup and information that it provides with attempted system installation. If you want more eyes, feel free to push me a PM with a link to your apk and when I receive my infuse later this week, I'll take a crack at it.

If you're on the latest version 1.08 of Eaglesblood for 2.3.5, then just push this SystemUI.apk into /system/app , fix the permissions, and reboot, and it should do the trick.
The reason you were having trouble before is because the stock image is a .9.png...I won't go into the details of that, but a little extra work is needed to make those files work.
This file I've included should work for ya.

Ok, so you're on the latest version (1.08) of Eaglesblood for 2.3.5, correct? If you are not 100% sure, you can check in "About Phone" and check on the build.
Using the SystemUI.apk that I uploaded, what is your procedure for getting it into your phone?
Because that file has a transparent status_bar_background.9.png with correct patch handles drawn...not sure why it won't work. I will admit, that I don't have a 2.3.5 nandroid backed up to test. Anyone else?
I think I found the problem. Your rom's SystemUI/res/layout/status_bar_tracking.xml points to shade_bg.png for the background. I made that image transparent for you, and recompiled the apk. I really hope this works for you. I have to admit, I"m feeling rather dumb right now.
Yes I'm on 1.08 and my exact procedure was I downloaded the file on my phone, I went to root explorer to the xda download folder where it was located, I copied it to system/app and overwrote tthe current systemui.apk that was there, at that time, a constant endless force closes occurred so I had to pull my battery and rebooted that way, as it rebooted, the notification bar was gone, I then went to the systemui and changed permissions to where the first column is all checked and the first of the 2nd ccolumn is checked, I then pulled the battery again (cuz of the apn issue without the hard reset) and when it came back, nothing changed, so I fixed permissions via rom manager, to no avail......its frustrating!

holy crap it worked.....a million times THANKS!!! You effin rock dude! thanks for taking the time to help me! So to my understanding, u just edited the shade_bg file???? that was it??
Yeh, essentially, all I would have needed to do was edit that shade_bg.png file. But I didn't know to look there until I was forced to try to save face after giving you bad advice, lol. Now I know that some roms will point to status_bar_background.png, some will point to shade_bg, and some even simply define a hex color code...just have to decompile the SystemUI.apk, and look in res/layout/status_bar_tracking.xml to see where it's looking....and then edit that file.

so now that i know it works, i was wondering if i wanted to create one, do i make it 200 x 200 like the current shade_bg file is? i kinda want to make one with a black background with semi transparency! I tried editing the shade_bg file u made, with a program called Gimp, but it didnt work
Can you give me your exact method to doing this? I created an image from gimp, i saved it as shade_bg.png, so basically , i extracted the systemui.apk from root explorer, it put the extracted in my sd card, so i plugged in my phone in my mac, and i took that folder from my sd card, now from here, the extracted file is a zip file, so i double clicked it b/c macs can unzip files easily, so in the folder, i placed my shade_bg file into the appropriate folder.....now this is where i think i mess up, what do u do from here? I "compressed" the systemui folder to make it back into a zip, and then placed it into my sd card, i then "renamed" the file thru my phone from a .zip to a .apk, now in root explorer there is usually an icon that shows up next to the name of the files, now when i changed it, a green android icon showed up, but on the file that you had edited for me, there was a "settings" icon, u know, the standard icon for the settings app in android! i put the apk in the system/app and it didnt work, even after permissions set up! hmmm.....i promise, this will probably be my last post!
please keep in mind, i have a mac, and i do have that 7zip u mentioned in the development thread, but its called EZ7Z.....just in case i need it
If you are doing it the way you described, then you need to find a way to zip with no compression. 7 zip does that with the "store" setting...not sure about the mac version.
You don't wanna know where this was sent from.

[TUT] So you want to start themeing in Windows?

Hey guys! Someone recently posted that they wanted to start to making their own themes and I posted a very long reply and figured, might as well post a "somewhat easy to understand" tutorial here for everyone.
So you want to make your own themes?
First off, it is important to know that if you plan on porting any themes over and releasing it to the masses, that you get permission from the theme owner first!!
DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOUR PHONE EXPLODES OR MELT! lol
NOTE: IF YOU'RE A NOOB (you know if you are) DO NOT MESS WITH ANY IMAGE THAT ENDS IN ".9" UNTIL YOU READ UP ON THEM.......A LOT! IF YOU'RE JUST REPLACING AN IMAGE, THEN READ ON.
A good write up on .9 (9 patch) images can be found here:
http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/draw9patch.html
What you will need:
Apkmanager: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695701
7zip: http://www.7-zip.org/download.html
An empty flashable zip: http://www.multiupload.com/DBEMBUOCND
Lot's of time on your hands!
GETTING STARTED:
Apkmanager is going to be your "all-in-one" tool for making a theme in Windows.
(I'll go into all the options of apkmanager a little later)
The process you need to follow is actually kind of simple. It's just very time consuming.
First you will need to make the images that you want (unless you are porting a theme).
Now what you need to do is one way or another, get the framework-res.apk and the SystemUI.apk from your phone, if you want to theme the launcher then you need to get the TouchWiz30Launcher.apk as well. (If you don't want to mess with using adb, use Root Explorer, just copy the apk then paste on your sdcard, then copy and paste from your sdcard onto your pc.)
Extract apkmanager to somewhere easy like the desktop and you should end up with a folder named "apkmanager" or whatever.
Inside that folder, you should have the following folders:
Other
place-apk-here-for-modding
place-apk-here-for-signing
place-apk-here-to-batch-optimize
place-ogg-here
projects
Then the following files:
log
Script
DO NOT MODIFY THE NAMES OF ANY OF THESE FILES OR FOLDERS OR NOTHING WILL WORK!
Take the 3 files that you got from your phone and place them in the "place apk here for modding" folder.
Double click to open the "Script" file
Press "22" and hit enter to set your current job
Select either 1,2 or 3 for whichever apk you want to start on first
Select "9" to decompile
Once decompile is done, go inside the "projects" folder and now you have a folder inside there with whatever the name is of the apk you just decompiled.
Inside that folder are the images and XML files you need to replace (you might not have to edit any of the XML files, that's a little more advanced unless you already know how to.)
Most of the images you will need to edit will be in the following folders of each apk:
res>drawable
res>drawable-hdpi
You can look around in there and see what all needs to be done. I will get into themeing the contacts and phone and all that a little later.
Once you get everything done and you're ready to test it out, you need to go back to that "Script" file in apkmanager and open it back up. Now you're going to do pretty much the same stuff you did when you were decompiling the apk, in order to compile the apk.
In the Script for apkmanager, you're going to press "22" and hit enter, then select which file you want to compile first by either pressing 1,2 or 3.
Select the file and hit enter, then press "11" and press enter to compile the apk. As long as you didn't mess anything up during the process of changing stuff, you shouldn't receive any errors. If you do, you need to figure out what it was you messed up on and fix it.
Go through and compile the apks that you edited. Once that is done, you will go to your "place apk here for modding" folder again and you will notice that you have 3 new files in there:
unsignedframework-res.apk
unsignedSystemUI.apk
unsignedTouchWiz30Launcher.apk
Remember that empty flashable zip you downloaded earlier? Now you need it.
Right click on the flashable zip and mouse over "7zip" and click on "Open Archive"
Take the unsignedSystemUI.apk and the unsignedTouchWiz30Launcher.apk and place them in the "app" folder. Now rename those to their original names:
SystemUI.apk
TouchWiz30Launcher.apk
Now take that unsignedframework-res.apk and place it in the "framework" folder of the flashable zip. Rename that one to "framework-res.apk."
Now you can close out of the flashable zip file and place it on your sdcard.
Reboot into recovery, wipe cache partition, wipe dalvik, now go to "mounts and storage" and mount /system.
Now go back and flash the zip file you just put on your sdcard.
Since you wiped your cache and your dalvik, the reboot will take a little while. You should now be good to go!
NOTE: Since I did not create apkmanager, I will not be able to answer many questions about it but feel free to ask. If I don't have an answer for you, Just go back to the post above where you downloaded it, and post your question there.
As stated earlier in my post, I will get more in depth about all this stuff as soon as I have a little more time to post everything.
Please enjoy and happy themeing!!!!!!
Thank you for this spc.

In ApkManager you don't need to decompile the apk's. You just need to extract them because all you're doing is messing with the images.

Just so everyone knows, here soon I'm also going to be posting a tutorial on how to center the clock and move around your icons and stuff in the statusbar!
I had all the knowledge in the OP and decided I was going to start theming. Then I saw the literally hundreds of PNG's i would have to edit and decided it isn't for me lol. I get bored too easily to spend that much time in photoshop/gimp haha.
That said, I really appreciate what themers do.

It's the "updater-script"
To get to the updater script, of the zip file. Open the zip file with 7zip and go to:

How to customise APK's Images [EASY]

First off you need a deodoxed custom rom , next copy the desired APK's from your System/App folder or from the zip you flashed or from wherever.
Download and Install WinRAR or 7Zip and drag the APK onto the shortcut on your desktop. It should open it up , next extract the LDPI and the HDPI folder/s onto your desktop.
Edit your pics with any program e.g. Paint.net . Then replace the modified folder with the old one.
Next download SignAPKTics from APKTops and install that. Drag the modded APK to your SD card.
Click START , choose the APK , click next , choose Test Sign and click sign! Wait 1.5 mins! And ot should be done. Now just (with root browser) replace the old one with the modded one.
And re-boot! Enjoy...

I'm not sure if he has tried it with system app. replacing a file like systemUI.apk or framework-res.apk will make our device continously give FC message. we should use zip file to push the apk to /system/app. system app is also should not signed. I always using this trick without signing stuff and it works. we just need to make sure that we're replace the ordinary file (not the .9 one) and put a picture with same resolution with the original one.
Exactly my thoughts. Resigning systems apps is a big NO. I already did it twice (SystemUI.apk) and I ended up with no statusbar. Good thing I had a backup.

when making a guide always post screenshots dude,
not just post words,
make it clarified and very detailed so that people reading this will not get lost,
also don't post for the sake of just putting it there,
you have a good title
but when people read this its not "easy"
try to put yourself in other people's shoes,
even i can't comprehend the output you put on this
no offence but make this better and stop posting threads that are useless
The easiest and foolproof method is to use Ninjamorph or metamorph app from market.I've modified tones of .pngs with them.
First open the apk with the app
Exit the app
Go to myfiles/Androidthemes/workspace/name-of-apk/res/
Then go to drawable ldpi
Take a look at all of the .png files
Find which .png you want to replace.
You should make your own pic with photoshop or anything to replace it with exact resolution and name
Store it in the sd-card
Open the app again
Go to Existing project/name-of-apk/res/drawable ldpi
Click on the .png you want to replace
App will ask you to replace it with some other .png
Navigate to the modified pic
It'll replace the .png
Then go back to homepage of app
Then click finish project
Tap on the apk name
App will ask you whether you want to replace the original apk
Do as you want
Reboot phone
Make a nandroid backup before everything. cheers

yea metamorph/ninjamorph is great but i'd prefer to do it in PC and just push it via adb cuz i use photoshop and i find it a hassle to use my phone to edit apk's
It's for those guys who dont know how to decompile/compile apk files with their pc.But I agree with you, pc is the best way to go.

Enjoy...

May be you should try it out first.Replacing system apps with root explorer is a very dangerous business.I'm familiar with that.My phone started to do endless boot loops which even a nandroid restore failed to fix and ended up in flashing a new stock rom.

agree
pushing it using adb is a more safer way, because if something goes wrong with forcing it to system then you can just repush the original system apk
you was replacing a running apk. there's no doubt it will give you FC message (lol). try your method to replace framework-res.apk or any system app/framework. b16h22 is right. your method is dangerous.
I modify my systemui.apk but signapktic give
Doesn't exist
132 installed package
Error ...
I'm just trying to help people , if you don't like it then good for you. I'd love to add screenies but laptop is broken. If you could provide them then brilliant.

[DEV QUESTION] CyanogenMod 7.2.0-RC3

Alright. Can anyone give me a list of the applications in the ROM?
I don't mean like Market, Settings, etc...
I mean like
Market - Vending.apk, .odex
Settings - Settings.apk, odex
And can you separate the applications from the widgets? Honestly, it's a pain right now since ADB doesn't work properly.
And yes. I'm testing the AcidHazardROM 3.0 kitchen, and quit frankly, the "customization" is extremely limited when it comes to system apps because of this.
hmmm...why don't you try to d/l marcells latest build....it's an update.zip.....easy to checkout what's in there?

I know that. I've already downloaded it.
My ADB is currently not working, so I can't check which files are widgets and which files are applications.
I also can't check what application the.apk and .odex file is associated with.

[Q] Need some help modding APK

I was trying to mod dotview apk to replace HTC voice assist with Google Now and maybe you can help me.
I decompiled the apk and stuck in logcats so I can follow the execution path but I cannot seem to get it to run.
First time I forgot to sign it, so that crashed.
But even once I signed it and pushed it to priv-app I couldn't boot my phone. It may be because I'm in ART... Idk.
I guess I'm a bit lost... Lol. Maybe you can help me...
How does odex/deodex affect apk modding?
Does art affect apk modding?
Do I need HTCs certificates or is the default test cert OK?
What would be the rough outline to mod an apk?
(I'm comfortable modding the smali, I just don't know how to put the apk back properly)
Thank you so much.

You should place the original HTC certs in the Apk. I always do.
I Have noted that ART will not allow APK's to be modded easily and have to switch back to Dalvik Execution. I had this problem with APM.
As far as rough outline to Mod an apk that is a pretty open question.
I would say, downloaded it, decompile it, edit it, re-compile it. Push it / flash it.

Thanks
How did you get the original certs? Is that the meta.inf folder?
Do I need to 'Sign' the apk after recompiling or is moving meta.inf enough?
Should I worry about odex/deodex?

Hi,
just found out your thread,
no clue on how to help you here but i'd definitely be interested in your mod!
I'm using autovoice (a plugin for tasker for voice commands)... Once you find out hew to have google now work do you think it would be possible to make a mod for autovoice as well? (I'll pay a few beers for that!)
thanks for your work on that anyway
