text messaging - Android Apps and Games

What's your favorite 3rd party messaging app?!

GoSMS Pro here. Just like the way in which it has all the features you could ask for, has a good widget, though performance could be better.
chompSMS has good performance, but not enough features; Handcent is the weakest IMO.
Stock 2.3 is very, very good actually.

Im using the stock with my thunderbolt and it generally feeezes after every text message I reply to.. its really annoying so I was looking for something better.

GoSMS pro
works great.

I use go sms pro

How is this "WRONG SECTION"
I believe that this is subject matter that is directly related to the forum of ANDROID APPS AND GAMES.
MESSAGING is an APP-lication on the ANDROID platform
So this seems acceptable location.

I have used a multitude of messaging apps
GO sms
GO sms Pro
Handcent
Chomp SMS
Touchwiz
I honestly would prefer GO SMS Pro and Handcant because of the features. Although the con to that would be a laggy messaging system. If you are looking for a good light weight messaging system i would recommend Chomp sms or running GO SMS Pro in its lightweight mode.

Handcent!

Handcent!! Go sms had more features until Handcents latest update

thanks for all the answers! i'm going to try gosms and chomp. cheers!

Handcent sms

Just wondering if this app is a battery drainer!? I'm currently using pop-up SMS and love it! But i like the look of handcent also and want to give it a try.

I am using handcent and I dont have a problem with it draining my battery
Give it a try, I like it.
Is it just me!? Or is there a delay in the pop up screen as you receive a text with this app!?

Is there any clear difference between chompsms and handcent? if so, can you list the differences and some pros/cons?

ye i'd like that too, Personally I cant find anything different between the two, they seem pretty comparable.
I had both ChompSMS & Handcent SMS & I found Handcent SMS better. Actually both seem pretty compareable, but Handcent is better for me
Yeah they seem the same to me I just like Chomp I guess the name I don't know but really both are good SMS replacements.
Yeah i've only used Handcent, haven't noticed any difference on the battery but its an amazing app.
comp has higher res at the grafix, just look at the bubbles
When I got the phone couple of months back, I have tried both apps.
and picked Handcent over ChompSMS. ever-since I'm a Hancent fan. Thats why I modified to X10.

What is the best sms/email popup app for the inspire

Agreed. My entire phone is a Go interface.
Go Launcher, Go Sms, Go Contacts. Once they get go Locker completely configurable I will use that too.
I have to recommend Go SMS as well. It's highly customizable and does way better than the stock messaging app.
i use gosms handcent started messing my phone up i recommend go sms for ya as well their stuff is so customizable and easy
While I also have been using GO SMS (only go product I dear use lol) lately it has been becomeing as bogged down as the stock and just as slow. There are many options. The top would be handcent and chomp as well as go. Try them all and find the one you like best and stick with it.

I use Go SMS, and now that I have I don't think I am capable to use any other one. Have tried several and keep going back to it.

Replacement for stock SMS app

I was curious if anyone had any suggestions for a replacement for the stock messaging app with ICS. I think the stock one looks pretty bad and have tried several of the 3rd party ones with mix results. I am really hoping for a modified version of the stock app but I would gladly accept any recommendations whether it be another 3rd party app I haven't tried, a theme to of these apps, or others or a modded version of the stock.
So far I have tried:
GoSMS
Handcent SMS
Pansi SMS
chompSMS
Contapps
I tend to like minimal style themes that still flow well with the stock look of ICS. The stock messaging app just feels out of place in regards to the look and feel of ICS in general. I been looking around and haven't find anything that I really like so I figured I'd lean on the community for suggestions.
Thanks in advance.
I was looking for something that looked like ICS too, I agree that the stock ICS messaging app doesn't fit in :-\ all I've found that was interesting was an inverted version of the stock ICS one, black background and the emoticons were blue
Pansi sms app is very good thanks

Handcent wins this one. I used to like gosms but they added too much extra stuff I didn't need to it. Handcent is nice. It has a delaysend option so you don't sent the wrong message to someone, or so you can correct a message if you notice it's wrong. Awesome stuff.

I'm with you OP. If there was just a black or grey themed version of the stock app it would be fantastic. Same thing with the Gmail app.

[App] SMS Popup

This is an app I found. Its in the playstore, search it up or follow link below. It by no mean requires root, or is specifically for the blaze, but I think its a great add on for anyone who had not seen it before, just a suggestion

A great option for someone who doesn't gave gosms pro because of gosms ex cause its wayy to heavy (me, lol.). Haha, that's right iPhone,! We don't need to jailbreak(root) for this on our phones.! A thanks for you, kind sir.

Or, you can use handcent messenger, which looks so much better than the tw SMS app.

SMS App

For those of us who really don't like SMS in Hangouts for whatever reason, what SMS app are you using and what is one of the best features on it?
Thanks
Tried go sms, handcent and chomp. Don't like any of them. Would love to see the cm, or similar, messaging app as a stand alone app for all devices.

Yeah. I've tired them and feel too bloated. Something minimal with a couple of keybuseful features is what I'm after.

What do you mean?
It should work as a default sms app.
(My Nexus 5 should be here any minute so I can't test it with it, but on my HTC One it did)

It needs to be updated to 4.4 which they said is in the works.

Does anyone know if it's possible to just download an apk of the stock jelly bean SMS app?
That is a good idea! Have the jelly bean SMS app on kit Kat! I have a Galaxy nexus rooted so I can probably just make a back up of my SMS app. I'll try it...

I'm not actually sure if it will work. It might not be compatible with 4.4 or it might be glitchy. In any case it would prob be best to just stick to hangouts. Not sure though. Anyone have any input if this will work?
8sms. Best sms app. Looks like stock, fast, and quickreply from notification shade.

not mentioned yet so I'll recommend it - sliding messaging... you do have to pay for it but it's very unique and quite a nice app
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I've installed 8SMS, set it to Standalone Mode and disabled Hangouts in Settings/Apps.
Strangely, under Settings/Wireless & networks/Default SMS, 8SMS doesn't show up. I'll be asking someone to text me soon to test that everything is working as it should be. I'll report back.
Edit: Running in Standalone mode didn't work but as soon as i deselected it i could receive SMS. Unfortunately sent messages aren't being received so i'm going back to using Hangouts for now.
I had no idea that Textra and 8sms existed until now (and I've been doing the Android thing since donut). I've been using Hangouts or the CM app, but for non rooted phones I could never find a messaging app I liked. These are beautiful and I'll be putting one on friends' phones to replace the (usually) lacking SMS stock apps.

I use Disa.im which combines SMS/MMS and Whatsapp. It has a very clean interface and support for group conversations.

I'm really hoping the CM stock messaging app can be ported to KitKat. I've never understood the issue people have with it. It looks great, and it functions well.
