been trying to find this out, is the audio connector at the top a combo to use a 4 ring type jack similar to the iphone conector where i mic is also intergarted or pure stereo cannot seem to establish that?

I'm on my second Audio adapter from Pocket PC Techs: http://www.pocketpctechs.com/detail.asp?Product_ID=PPCPADPT01. The first one would sometimes only play the left or right speaker and I'd have to jiggle the wire on the adapter for it to play properly. I returned this for a second one which worked fine up until last week when it started to pop the speakers in the car when the slightest jostling of the wire occured (hitting bumps). I've got it connected to the XDA 2 and then to a cassette adapter with 3.5mm jack in the car. The cassette adapter works fine on the iPAQ H3970 and the XDA 2 works perfectly with the included stereo headset. Another problem with the PPCTechs audio adapter is that the microphone doesn't work in the 2.5mm headset jack part.
I know there are people out there who have canibalized their included stereo headsets to make audio adapters and also people who have made their own USB adapters with audio out capabilities. Is anyone interested in making one for me?! I can send a canibalize-able stereo headset with the proper audio jack if needed.
I would like either:
- A modified stereo headset cable with microphone that connects to a female 3.5mm stereo headset jack.. or directly to a car cassette adapter.
...or...
- A serial port connection that can output stereo audio to a 3.5mm female audio jack, includes a microphone or 2.5mm mono headset jack, and provides charging capabilities.
I imagine the former choice would be easier, but none of my local electronics repair shops want to do it and I don't have the tools or experience to do it right. The latter would be nicer. I'd buy a car kit, but I havn't seen any that work with the XDA2 and provide audio out that can connect to the car stereo. I want both stereo music/movies to be played in the car stereo speakers as well as GPS navigation commands and (sometimes) phone calls... and I want Voice Command to work (hence the need for a microphone)!
Please PM me with costs if some one can do this for me.
Adamz- Did you push in the connector from the Audio all the way in? I used the handsfree set ( supplier with MMDA II) and it was not working properly and was also loose until I found that you have to really push it firmly.
I am suprised if you did do that and it still does not work as you said it has all the connectors
I am also looking for a similar solution using the same principle. The other sync input I use for mt GPS connector/ charger . was going to try the Audio adaptor that you are using with a mute box through to a speaker .

Nah, I want stereo quality music to be played in the existing speakers in my car. I also want GPS navigator instructions to be played in the car stereo as well as phone calls. I've got a Bluetooth GPS reciever, so I don't really need a serial connection.
The PPCTechs adapter is fully inserted into the audio jack, although sometimes pushing it too far makes it stop working as well! But if I jiggle the wire, sometimes it does work... then if I hit a bump, maybe it will stop working.
I'm thinking the USB Cradle with Audio might be good. If that's got a 3.5mm female stereo jack in the back, I can plug the casette adapter into that. Plug the USB into a cigarette lighter adapter... and that should be all set sinc the Audio USB cradle supposedly has a microphone in it.
Those don't seem to be available yet though.

Hi all, i use my XDA to play MP3's stored on my SD card, but now, with over use the headphone jack does not want to work.
I have tried in many places to get a new headphone jack fitted but in each case nobody is prepared to attempt a replacement of surface mount componant.
I have bought a Sony USB to digital convertor but this does not emit a signal from the connection on the bottom of the unit, and continues to play through the speaker at the top.
Does anyone know how force the output through the connection at the bottom of the unit or any other suggestions on how i may get sound to an amp from the XDA other than using the headphone jack ?
i looked into this sometime back. i wanted to route the audio through the bottom connector so when in the car i could play the mp3s, have tomtom and calls through the car stereo, also wire a mic closer to my driving position. I got all the connectors to do it but everyone at the time said it wasnt possible to get all the audio routed through the bottom even though it does have left right and mic connections. I cant remember which audio couldnt be routed. it was something stupid software wise. rather than a nice simple linking of the connections from the 2.5mm socket on to the bottom conn.

surface mount isnt such a hard thing to deal with if you have a good iron and very find tip. i used to work on surface mount stuff for years.
Ok, im my mind, this does not seem like much of a stretch, although i have not been able to find anything like i am thinking. What i picture is a relatively small (about 30 mm diameter) bluetooth adapter to stream audio too. The "button" would have a 1/8" stereo adapter coming out the back side so that you could plug this into a aux input on a car stereo, or whatever else. Right now, i have an 1/8" 90 degree adapter to a 2' patch cable to a 3/32" to 1/8" adapter, to the ever so wonderful HTC usb to 3/32" audio and power adapter. This is a pain in the ass. Bluetooth stereo headphones are out. Hell, bluetooth GPS recievers are out that are around the same size that i am thinking this (from what i know) non existant device should be. Can anyone help me out here? All i want is a (small) bluetooth device that has a 1/8" stereo jack on it to plug in my car without the need for any wires.
Does such a magical device exist? Cheers.

Anyone knows if it's possible to connect a external microphone in the 3.5mm jack. Would be nice to be able to plug in a better microphone when recording music shows etc. Shouldnt it be possible since you can speak through the htc-headset?
I don't think that you can plug a mic in it, this jack is "way-out" only, not "in"...
At least i never tried, but i guess it's how it works (if anyone can confirm this or prove me wrong ).
It's a 4 pin 3.5mm TRRS connector. It has a mic connector built in as well as the audio and ground.
I don't know if you can get a microphone with that specific connector, look it up and see... but it would be pretty easy to make your own connector if you cannibalise a headset or something like that and then connect whatever mic you wanted to that.
Not sure about the quality, but dealextreme sku.20714 seems like to fit your description.

It is still recognised as a headset even when there are no headphones plugged into it.
So the quality for what you want is probably poor BUT it does prove that it can be done.
Perhaps one of these PLUS a good quality mic PLUS a soldering iron is the answer
Hey guys, I have my old Orbit 2 (Polaris) car mount in my car for use with my ne DHD (which is an absolute perfect, tight, unobtrusive fit btw!). I have a usb charging cable and phono-to-phono cable hooked up behind my dash to allow for charging and audio through my car stereo. Thing is the calls arent great for the other caller (I have to put on loudspeaker for the caller to hear me speak), possibly due to sensitivity of the DHD mic.
Anyway, I was wondering does anyone know where I might get a good long AUX + mic cable such as the one that comes with this car holder ... http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/windowseat-handsfree

The price on this one is a rip-off but that's basicaly what you need to get it running. Plug it in the phone, then plug the cable you already have installed in the headphones output and you need to buy a good quality microphone, plug it in the other female connector and then install it in your car so it can pick up your voice.
Or if you don't use your stock headphones and you are good with the soldering gun, you can buy two female 3.5mm stereo connectors, cut the headphones cable and make the y-cable yourself. Or even use the headphone's microphone and install just one female jack, connected to the headphones' cables. You can try if the headphones' mic will work - just plug them in, point the microphone to yourself where you intend to install it, start the engine and call someone.
