Stay awake help on JVO - Captivate General

Hello, I am running the stock JVO rom on my capitavate with xcal's kernel and root. I would like my screen to stay on while in my car docking cradle. I know that Samsung removed the option to enable stay awake from all the 2.3.3 roms. I have tried a few different widgets to enable stay away but they do not work in my cradle. They do work when connected to my computer or the AC charger. Can anyone offer advice or assistance on how to get my screen to stay on? Thank you.

I had the same problem. Unfortunately it is a problem with all 2.3.3 ROM's. The only thing you can try would be to set the phone to stay awake when charging.

He is on a custom ROM which has that option.

framework-res.apk\res\values\integers.xml
<integer name="config_carDockKeepsScreenOn">
I changed it in Serendipity VII, if you care to try it.

Hi MikeyMike, Thank you for that information. I am not a developer so, I'm unsure when you ment by that XML file and tag. Are you suggesting that I can change it on my current stock ROM or suggesting I try out our Serendipity VII? If I can change it on my current rom could you please explain it a bit more? (FYI - I've been considering trying S-VII, you do great work.)

Simpler less dev intensive approach.. Grab a copy of 'Extended Controls' from the market.. Create a new toggle whose name is 'Screen on When Charging.' Toggle it (the widget) on and your screen will then stay on anytime the device is charging. Had to use this when I was on JVO as the screen going off while the phone was on my desk but plugged in irritated me to no end. Just checked and extended controls is $.99 in the market..

If you decompile the .apk with APK Manager, there will be an .xml file that you can edit with a text editor like Notepad++.

still not staying awake

Hi MikeyMike01, I took you up on your suggestion to try Serendipity VII, instead of me hacking around in APK and XML files. First of all I like serendipity alot, but my phone still goes to sleep in my car dock. One thing I noticed was that when my phone is connected to my wall charger it will say "Charging (AC)". When its connected to my computer it will say "Charging (USB)". When its connected to my car dock it just says "Charging". I don't remember it saying that when on Froyo. I think it used to say "Charging (AC)". Do you think that might have to do with the problem I'm having with my phone not staying awake in the Samsung official car dock?

I don't have a car dock so I can't do more than speculate.

you should ask questions about a specific ROM inside that thread. Maybe your issue has been solved already.

Did you try to change the values under engery controll? You will find it in your system settings. If your values are to switch off the light after some seconds or minutes it might be a hardware issue with one of the buttons.

There are no GPS issues with the Charge like there were with the early Galaxy S phones. If you are having GPS issues, you may have a defective phone.

agreed, even with a custom rom humble 1.25 I think. My GPS compared to my old captivate w custom which is way better than stock.... side by side today in LA was night and day difference in favor of the Charge.
Download "FasterFix" from the market
find a nice server in your area or use a custom one like supl.google.com
If you're in Texas, use "tick.uh.edu" you will get a lock almost instantly
after you make the changes, reboot your phone
The GPS on the charge works, but it still sucks. Even in my car I have to damn near hold it out the window to get a lock. Never had this issue with an HTC or Motorola which could easily get a GPS lock inside a building.
It works, but it could (should) be better.
fasterfix freezes my phone
After you have taken the latest ota make sure you wipe data. There was a gps problem up until the ee4 update. The first lock might take a little while but after that it should be almost instant outdoors.

Gummy charged GBE... i havent tried the froyo roms yet but i might switch to one later tonight.
well if you're trying to get better GPS and you can't use fasterfix (still have to be rooted to try this)
/ data/ gps
with root explorer long click and hit "open in text editor"
change port to 7276
server is "supl.google.com" (DO NOT PUT WWW)
Sometimes it can help to change from STANDALONE mode to "MSBASED"
hit menu, save and exit (Don't worry if you're using Root explorer it will automatically create a backup)
Reboot your phone and go outside

Let me know how it works out man. I'd go outside and test using "GPS Status and Toolbox" or "GPS TEST' by Chartcross

It's actually just /data/gps. Just thought I'd clear that up for some people.

Yes you are correct, oh and I just switched to Humble and got the blackscreen. I guess FasterFix is only working with Eclipse and Gummy charged 1.9 Fe
i tried GPS Status (used the app when i had my fascinate and it worked great) and it's pretty much immediate fix. Then i can go to gnav it pinpoints me pretty well.. it's a few meters off. I think before i flashed gb it was more accurate but a little slower to fix.

try using SGS tools and applying the GPS fix.....you have to be rooted though to use it..Im not sure if it helps but mine seems quicker to lock after I do it

Replace the charging animation when your phone is turned off with a useful program

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.nomoarpowah
This apparently works for Samsung galaxy phones so it should work for our phone.
it can do useful stuff like turn your phone on automatically when its fully charged or at a set time which is useful because you can keep your phone off and save battery while you're sleeping and have the alarm still wake you up
I tried/used this on GB, but it hasn't been working for me under ICS. I'd definitely appreciate hearing if someone can get it running on the current crop of ICS ROMs!
I was a huge fan of NoMoarPowah when I was on stock. I used it as kind of a do-not-disturb feature at night.
This post from the NoMoarPowah XDA thread doesn't look promising for ICS support:

The app cannot support CM9. It requires Samsung system files to work, and they will not be present in anything from the CM tree.

Sorry I don't own this phone anymore. As far as I know, the app I linked is the only way to change the charging animation screen for this device, and it only works on stock samsung firmware.

No issues. Thanks!

Before I buy this for my friends Upgrade, I need to ask a couple questions.

A. Does this phone support "Per contact" ringtones like the Galaxy S3 does? If so, can you choose what file you want as your ringtone?
B. Average battery life?
C. If the default camera app is not to her liking, what would be a good alternative?
A. I think every Android device supports this... I would hope!
B. Average. Stock ROM is better battery-wise than aftermarket.
C. Dunno, sorry. Stock camera app works great for me.

Oh, someone with one of these PMed me a sec ago with answer A.
I also need to know if she can charge and use data on her phone at the same time. I know some phones wont charge if they're connected via usb and you're transfering data and stuff. It seems like a pretty solid phone.

Transferring data and charging works fine here.

Alright, thats all I need to know. It seems like the MMS is the Stock MMS from AOSP or something, but I could be wrong. I dont really think she'll really mind one way or the other.
