[Q] Cant Go to Theme Settings/ Registry Editor after registry editing. - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

FIRSTLY : ALso for all WP7 USERS to know, adding files to the REGISTRY EDITOR will cause your phone to have this problem.
PLEASE DO NOT ADD YOUR OWN REGISTRY FILES UNTIL PROVEN SAFE TO DO SO!
Dont be like meh... :'( and everything you do with the phone, ALWAYS DO A FULL BACKUP FIRST WITH ZUNE!(searchable in the xda forums"
Hi all.. I have this problem.
I recently added a DWORD key in HKLM\ControlPanel\themes\accentedcolours(not sure of the actual directory as i cant check with this problem... anyways where it shows 0 for something 1 for red.)
and i added another string somewhere in the Themes folder too. After I quit the reg editor, And tried to go into settings, It just crashes and goes back to the home screen. Same for going back to the reg editor.
I actually did this as I thought we could use the reg editor to add a custom colour instead of editing a already existing colour.
So is there anyway to revert this or something?
Is it doomed forever?
Really freaking meh out. Just got it Yesterday..
HELP PLEASE!!!!
IM SO SCREWED.
EDIT: ALL APPs DONT WORK! Only Some Settings and Preloaded WP7 apps. (Sideloaded Apps and Games DOnt work )
Help Meh!

Reset it, and if that doesn't work you can always flash a new ROM.

Thanks for the quick reply. Is there any other way I can solve this problem without Reflashing or Restoring?
And if I were to restore, how can I make sure my save files in games like NFS and all the games will still be there? sorry for asking another question
Im using NoDo 7392 unlocked.
I have a 7004 backup.

Νo other way m8....Restore the 7004 backup and start over (unlock-update etc)
And when you finish setup make a full backup in case off next time want to play again with registry hacks
Backup app is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103011

Thanks colossus and Avandor. Gues theres no choice then..
Last question
I restored my Omnia 7 and got back to 7004. Unlocked it, and updated to Official NoDo(7392).
(This Makes me able to Achieve Official Unlocked NoDo)
I then backedup my Unlocked NoDo 7392 with the same tool and the same computer, not knowing the previous OS v7004 will disappear/be overwrited. The Previous backup was gone
Does anyone know when I restore my phone at any point of time to the Official NoDo(OS 7392) unlocked will I still be unlocked?
If not I have to flash a 7008 firmware..

Sprite backup question-please help

Here is my situation:
I had a HTC Touch Pro T7272. A few days ago I lost this phone but ordered a new one.
I ordered the same phone, but it may have a different ROM/Radio version
For the phone I lost, I have a full backup, from 3 weeks ago. I also have the updated synced files from the day before I lost this phone. I had done a lot of tweaks and added many programs, so it would be best to restore the full backup to the new phone.
1. When the new TP arrives, should I load the Sprite backup (an .exe file) onto the new phone and run that?
2. Then sync to my desktop to get the latest file updates?
3. Do I have to load sprite backup onto the Touch Pro first? Or can I just load the backup file and double clip it to execute Restore?
4. I have .net 3.5 loaded on my desktop. Do I need to load this onto the TP BEFORE I do the Restore?
Any advice here would be greatly appreciated.

1- You can - although it's not necessary if the backup file you created is self-restoring.
2- Yes after you've run your backup.
3- No, see my #1
4- No, unless the last backup you have doesn't include it.
Thanks for your advise C. My head is still spinning from losing my phone.
If the restore somehow messes with the phone (let's say it's got a new ROM and slightly different registry), you can always then backup your PIM data with PIM backup 2.8, then do a hard reset and restore the PIM data. If you want to get fancier, you can look through your registry and find the settings that you'd like to keep, and export those reg keys to your sd card, then import them back after a hard reset.
Since the backup file is an .exe file, can I run it from the micro sd card in the phone, or does it have to be run from the desktop?
I am sorry to tell you but, after updating to the new ROM, I tried to restore a backup taken with the old ROM and I had major problems, one of them being that the screen would not rotate when sliding out the keyboard, so I ended up hard-resetting and reinstalling all applications one by one....
Wouldn't you be better off restoring using the same ROM (as used in the backup), THEN upgrading ROMs?
This reminds me though, I don't know which ROM I had in my lost phone. Therefore I might have to reload eveerything one by one...ERRRR
Hi,
I recently did that after upgrading the ROM. I can say it works, but I'm not sure, if there are any files from the new ROM that have been replaced by old versions. You'd probably be better off just restoring your PIM data only...
CU,
Cactus World
Now I am all messed up. Please help.
1. I just received my replacement TP phone. I loaded the backup .exe file onto it but it would not execute. Error message says missing a component.
How to I get sprite backup working again? It is on my desktop.
2. I need to load .net 3.5 onto this device. I can't remember where I got it from or how I loaded it. Can someone remind me. It is actuially already loaded on my desktop.
3. I need to reload the latest version of Google Maps. Does anyone have the link?
Thanks for the help. My head is about to explode trying to get this new phone back to the previous state.
Okay, I figured out 1 & 2.
Does anyone have a link to the newest Google maps?
Does anyone know the registry setting to remove an icon on the email tabs? After doing the restore, I have 2 icons that were linked to email accounts, that no longer work. How can I get rid of them?
My last phone had "Programs" in the bottom right hand corner of Today screen. This one has "Contacts" I prefer "Programs" Does anyone know how to fix this?
I apologize if I suck at describing some of these issues. I am still beating myself up for losing the phone.
http://www.google.com/gmm/GoogleMaps.CAB
And try this for fixing those orphaned accounts - worked for me:
http://nicolasmauri.blogspot.com/2007/01/wm5-utility-recover-your-lost-mail.html
hyachts, thanks for the help. this software from Nicolas Mauri might work, but I couldn't tell from his blog. You see I have 1 or 2 extra email icons that were left from a restore. Will this program get rid of those email icons? Also, it is in .rar format so I can't use on my comouters here. I have to try my office. Is there a .cab file in the .rar file?
One more request. Does anyone know how to add the "programs" choice instead of "contacts" on the home screen (lower right hand corner)

nexus s txt thread recovery?

Hello, I have a question I hope you can help me with...
I've got a nexus S 2.3 and Ive just deleted a very important text msg thread, have I lost it forever or is there anyway that I can recover it??
If I can recover it can you please tell me what I should do as I ve never done anything ike this before. Many thanks, concerned android user.
Never tried anything like this before, so just some ideas as a general outline:
The first thing you should do is a complete image of the phone before the data can be overwritten (if it isn't already).
There is no convenient way to undelete that I know of.
I would search for the sms database file and try some sqlite tools on it. Look if there are entries that are marked as deleted or something.
If that doesn't bring anything up, I would use a good (hex-)editor to extract the strings from the file and see, if the data is somehow still there.
Anyway it will probably mean a lot of work, depending on how many sms you have stored and the best you should hope for is that you can manually reconstruct the thread in a text file or on a piece of paper.
Hello cgi,
thanks for the reply with advice!!
what is a complete image? how do i do this?
how do i search the sms database?
where do i get hex editor from?
do i need to back up any data before trying to recover anything?
many thanks,

An image is a complete copy of the data on the phone. The easiest way to do that is to use a custom recovery system like clockworkmod recovery. If you have a custom ROM installed, chances are, that you already have it.
First: Is your bootloader locked or unlocked?
Second: Which version of Android exactly is one your phone?
If your bootloader is unlocked, you can install a recovery image that will let you backup the data partition where your sms database should reside.
If your bootloader is locked but your Android version is 2.3.3 or lower, you can use an exploit that let's install a different recovery image.
If your bootloader is locked and your Android version 2.3.4 (and your phone is not rooted), then AFAIK you are out of luck.

There are a lot out there. I use okteta from the KDE project, but you can use whichever you want. You could use notepad, too, i guess, but that won't make things any easier.

That's the image I was talking about. You would first copy all the data on your computer.
CGIi,
Many many thanks for taking the time to reply to my question!!
I dont think there is much chance of recovering this thread, my friend has about half of the 900 texts in the thread which makes it slighty easier to swalow.
once again the importance of backing things up is key to keeping the pics, files, texts you want to keep. I'l try to do this even more in the future, I'm so sick of losing data from old mobiles, PC'S etc, I'm gonna back up everything from now on!!
Many thanks again, RAY

[Q] Restoring original rom help

Need a bit of help guys. I need to revert my focus to the original rom. I updated to nodo thinking I could unlock and sideload afterwards, but of course.. I couldn't. I've reformatted my pc since then and don't have my old restore point. I'm downloading a 7008 backup from a user here on XDA (thanks munkeyphyst!!!)
but I don't know how to get Zune to see it as an old restore point. Can anyone tell me where I need to put the files?
I have XP SP3.
thanks in advanced.

any chance he has shared the backup in a thread? I am in need of such a backup as well. The files are all saved in your zune folder by the way, if you make a backup of your phone you will find them.

What will happen if I upgrade mango beta and missing my backup?

What will happen if I upgrade mango beta and missing my backup?
I upgrade to mango beta yesterday, I follow the instruction and the program tell me the backup progress is 100% done.
But today I went to Windows Phone Update directory and it just only list one directory "Properties" and Properties.xml.
My windows phone is HTC HD7, is that possible copy others backup and restore on my HD7?
You'll probably be able to find a NoDo ROM online, so come time for the official release you should be ok.
It will just be a slightly bigger hassle since you don't have quick access to your own is all.

I was wondering this too, I did the mangoforall update, and the directory in the route drive was only 4.00kb, I also was like WTF.
To use the backup, you needed to install the Windows Phone support tools, remember ??? Check that folder, it comes out on mine to a little over 5gb, and I am pretty sure(95%) that is where the backup is stored.
If your that worried, try to do a restore, if it works you can go right back to Mango, it just will take some time....
I personally would of liked clearer directions, I was kind of freaked out too. I also would like to backup this backup to DVD or another computer, to make sure I have a copy to roll back later.
Edit: Found the details on it...

If you updated via the non dev unlocked way they will not be there they will be here "C:\\PreMangoState "

Where's the location? %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows Phone Update is the path I mention but I can't find backup.
Also, I can't find backup in C:\PreMangoState
I decided to screw all the update backup crap.
When Mango officially hits I'll reflash my phone with a ROM - that's it.
I have multiple phones - too much trouble trying to worry about this backup and that back-up.
the back up files are so huge.....
as i forget to delete my music and video and games, i got a back up file folder lager than 9G
Backup location
According to the Microsoft PDF, the backup location is:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Phone Update\
followed by the unique ID of the device (for example e64ab58e - 58d.....)
My folder is 2.2GB. To restore, you go to Zune and pick Settings/Phone/Update/Restore.
If you received a Microsoft Connnect invite, the agreement had like 5 places where it made you check "I swear on the blood of my ancestors that I will back up because backups are holy". The instructions, invites, everything say "backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, backup.... copy your backup to a USB stick and put it in a bank vault". And then kind of finishes with, "did we mention, you need to back up, or your phone will be stuck in pre-Mango?"
So... I would suggest... you back up
It took my phone only about 2-3 minutes to back up, using MangoB2-DevRetailUpdate.exe (much less than 531 seconds on their screenshot). Mind you, the next step (provisioning, where it says, "Installing Updates") took a lot longer than their 18 seconds (I think about 79 sec).
But like, 5 minutes is way better than "OMG MY STOOPID PHONE IS STUCK IN ****ING PRE MANGO" 2 months from now. Like, maybe they know something we don't and flashing back to NoDo is harder than it looks.
It was painless, really. Backing up took less time than reading about how important it was to back up
Actually I DO backup.
I just didn't check the backup location and re-check whether the backup is exist.
I just don't know why the upgrade tool says the backup progress is complete but it didn't save ANY backup on my computer.
That's all...
in worst case u would have to flash back a stock rom and have to reinstall everything...
i successfully downgraded from mango to 7004 and back up

[Q] Backup->Update->Restore

Hi,
I have searched in the forums but i couldnt find any solution to my problem.
My phone is a LG Optimus 7 unbranded on mango.
I want to backup my phone, update it to the latest rom with tethering enabled and after that i want to restore from backup.
How can i do that?
Thanks in advance!
There is no tool that can do that right now. The backup only happens when a new updates come in and Zune does that. It cannot be done manually.
Thanks for the fast answer!
So do i have to wait for the tethering update to appear in Zune or do i have to flash another firmware?

Only Zune will be able to do it. So I guess unless they do you have no choice. And No Firmware can enable it.
wpxbox is actually incorrect, there is a tool to create an image-based backup (like Zune does when updating) on demand. Search the Development and Hacking sub-forum, and you can find it. Note that it requires a program, updatewp.exe, that was once distributed by Microsoft and no longer is, so you'll need to find a copy of it (and the version for that copy must exactly match your Zune version).
However, what you're asking for isn't actually useful anyhow, unless you want to install the update and then immediately remove it. A WP7 backup is really more properly called a restore point - it's a full image of the phone's entire storage, including the parts that are normally read-only (the ROM). Restoring that image overwrites everything, including the ROM. Updates are modifications to the ROM, and restoring a backup will therefore remove the update.
That cleared the things... Thanks.
Thanks for correcting me. Apprciate that.
Yes there is a tool which you can find here but to make it work you need to use Old version of Zune and replace couple of DLL.
I personally have tried it but for some reason it did not work for and hence I was not recommending it. But thats me.
Go ahead and give it a shot to see if it works for you. If yes let me know how you did.

Thanks for providing the direct link. I was able to get it working, although it took a lot of work to find matching versions of the tool installer (v1, not v2) and Zune software. It's possible, though. Take a look at the Backup header in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1271963. It has instructions and links that you may be able to use to make the tool work.
Hi,
I finally poured in one complete day figuring out what was in that thread and made it work. I have written my version of making it work here
And Have also created a Video Demo as a Proof that How I made it work. Any feedback is appreciated.
The video is like 11:28 Minutes long. Where I have :
First showed what is my phone
Then created a Backup
Showed where the backup is actually stored i.e. Zune Default restore point
Reset my Phone
Used the Backup to bring it normal state.
