I have read so many instruction guides on how to root your HTC Desire and add a custom rom but I still do not really understand any of it. Are there any simple guides out there that take you step by step through the process?

Not hard at all. Make sure you follow a tutorial that has been "stickied" on the forums and follow it to the T! It's really simple, most of them are extremely well written and are fairly simple to follow.
Best of luck!
well basicly flashing a custom rom has two "tricky" parts that you have to be careful. Unlocking the bootloader and flashing the radio. Except that, it's basic instructions used a ton of times by members and obviously they work. if you have any questions, maybe a question in HTC Desire's forum will surely get you a lot more responses than here

Hi all I know there is a lot of guides on here for rooting Xooms, but after trying to root my Australian Xoom and bricking it I would really appreciate if someone can write a guide detailing all the steps from what software is need to how to root and install HC3.1
Like I said I know there is a lot of guides on here but I cant risk doing the wrong rooting process again, as the shop wont fall for a faulty app install twice !
Many thanks to all the devs on here making our Xooms so much better!!
What about this one

I had no idea what adb was until a week ago, i just went through it all step by step. Its not that hard to learn, as long as you follow it exactly as written you can't go too wrong. If you have any problems there's heaps of people here who can help you anyway.
There is a few guides in the Q & A section, which is where this should have been posted also.

Not development. Moved to Q&A.
Ok first all i would like to say, i'm a new member, so don't get frustrtated if i ask questions which might sound like a pretty simple thing for experienced users, because you must remember when you first started it was difficult for you as well.
Basically i need to know if it is possible to 'root' the Desire S - Yes i am new to 'rooting' and everything, but i am getting myself familar with the terminology so hopefully will know a lot more soon. The reason i ask this is because, even on other sites, i can only find rooting guides for the original Desire but not the Desire S. I do understand this could be because this is a new phone, but would just like someone here to confirm that.
Also, if i do manage to 'root' the Desire S, would anyone recommend a ROM to put on it, and lead me to a guide which will help me in completing that task. Please note, from what i know, it would be good if it is a stable mod as i would like all features like wi-fi to still work. Thanks for your time, hope to hear from someone soon.
Kind Regards: Droidzz
seriously, even if you are new
use the search function
the half desire s forum is already full of "can i root" "how to root" "root" "rooooot?" threads ....
Before worrying about rooting you need to make sure that your device is S-OFF or S-ON. Search XDA to get instructions on how to do that.
IF you are very lucky and your device is S-OFF you'll can gain root access using either Gingerbreak or SuperOneClick root methods. (Again search XDA)
If you're like most people and stuck with a S-ON device you'll need to use an XTC Clip or wait for AlphaRev to S-OFF your device.
As the last guy said - read around on XDA. Plenty of people have asked the same questions before....
Hope that helps...
Thanks, for that buddy - Yes i have already searched the forum, and the internet, so i'm aware on how to 'root' the phone using the superoneclick method, however don't understand what's all this about the S-ON S-OFF anyone care to elaborate?

I want to install a custom ROM on my rooted Epic Touch. I've rooted three phones but never messed with ROM's. All of the guides I see seem to presume a lot of knowledge, and most of them are quite old. Is there an up-to-date and reasonably simple guide for how to flash ROM's, or if I have to ask does that mean I shouldn't be messing around here at all?
Thank you,
RJ

[Q]Step-by-step guide to root & install custom rom on HTC One X for an absolute NOOB
I'm a total NOOB, just learning the meaning of words rooting, unlocking the bootloader, custom roms etc. I just purchased a HTC One X (used off Craigslist) and want to install some beautiful (and fast) custom roms. This phone's not been rooted and all I know is that the firmware on this phone is 3.18 and I don't know where to start. I've searched around the forums but haven't found anything. Could you please guide me to a step-by-step rooting, unlocking bootloader, installing CWM and custom roms installation (dunno if I got the order right) page/pages which will help me in my endeavor. Any help is highly appreciated.
You didn't look very hard. All you need is sticky to the top of this forum (4th post from the top): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237
There isn't a step-by-step guide that encompasses all that you ask for. Reason being, that some things are constantly changing. So new posts are put up for new processes. Another thing, this is a learning opportunity that you should take advantage of, not rely on guides to spoon-feed and hold your hand through process. So just start reading and learning.
Also, questions belong in Q&A, not general.

redpoint73, you are a savior! This is what I was looking (sorry if I didn't try hard enough) but I really really appreciate your help. So the order is Root, Unlock Bootloader, Install recovery and Install custom ROM correct ?
1) Temp root
2) SuperCID
3) s-off (optional)
4) Unlock bootloader
5) Install custom recovery

Hello, before I begin, let me just start by saying I'm the biggest noob at all this. I have tried reading threads and basics anf everything but its hard for me to undeestand all of it coz theres no all-in-one guide.
So, can somebody explain what are the requirements to flash a new ROM? Do I need to root then unlock my bootloader then install a custom recovery? Is there anything else I need besides downloading stuff? Because I just dont get the complexity of all this stuff.

You can visit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3044193 to know about terms you might be confused of.
To start flashing you have to unlock your bootloader. If you use adb then type this command
Fastboot oem unlock
After that you need to replace your stock recovery with better recovery to have some greater control amd a custom ROM for your phone
[NOTE] Before doing anything backup all your stuffs.
May be this help you I will post a detailed info. About flashing, I will inform you then:thumbup::thumbup:
