How to start flashing ROM - General Questions and Answers

Hello, before I begin, let me just start by saying I'm the biggest noob at all this. I have tried reading threads and basics anf everything but its hard for me to undeestand all of it coz theres no all-in-one guide.
So, can somebody explain what are the requirements to flash a new ROM? Do I need to root then unlock my bootloader then install a custom recovery? Is there anything else I need besides downloading stuff? Because I just dont get the complexity of all this stuff.

You can visit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3044193 to know about terms you might be confused of.
To start flashing you have to unlock your bootloader. If you use adb then type this command
Fastboot oem unlock
After that you need to replace your stock recovery with better recovery to have some greater control amd a custom ROM for your phone
[NOTE] Before doing anything backup all your stuffs.
May be this help you I will post a detailed info. About flashing, I will inform you then:thumbup::thumbup:

[Q] I am dumb, how to use custom Roms

Hey.
Just bought a HTC Evo 3D for £220.00 and I have no idea what roms are ect, infact this is my first android phone, and like the idea of being able to have a better camera on my phone and using beats audio.
I read your how to guide on how to instal this, but it went way over my head. I dont even know what a ROM is or kernal ect..
Is there a step by step dummy guide for someone who has never used a android phone before eg:
First install this program on your PC then do this, then you need to get this file and install it here ect and then do this.
I am seriously android dumb, my last phone was a sony Elm which would not even get the internet. and now hooked on the android phones.
Thanks so much.

Hi I know what you mean but really you just need to search around google is your best friend and also his other friend called you tube you will find all your answers but just make sure to read before you try but you will be fine we all started just like you so I know how you feel good luck
Welcome! No questions are dumb. We all have to start somewhere! I started Android with the Droid X. Android rules.
Youtube will also probably help you since you can actually see and pause the video at your own time following instructions step by step.
Good luck man!!!

[Q] Unexperienced but wanting to root.

Hi XDA Devolopers,
I can imagine this thread comming by daily. I've tried to search for it, but all I get is something that, to me is, "Hocus pocus". Clearly I am probably one of the least technical people found on this forum, but still I've got a question, and it'd be awesome if you could help me.
As I said: I am unknown with the whole Rooting thing. I have no idea where to begin. All I have done so far is making my decision on which ROM i'd like to use. Which is the JB 4.1.1 AOSP build #6.0.0 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1779133)
I've downloaded all the files, but I have not a clue what to do with that. I've read that you must first unlock and/or root an android device, make a backup and then flash and install the ROM.
Where do I start with this? What program do I use to Root my tablet and how do I go on from there?
Thank you guys so much in advance! It really looks like an awesome community, and I really don't want to mess with that, but help would be greatly appreciated.
search for PERI tool to root and install recovery, then flash the ROM u want through recovery.
Do like catfishbilly say and use PERI.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1681155
Just read read and read, don't rush. good luck.
PERI is the way to go, although everything needs a lot of reading, I was only reading threads for close to a month before rooting and installing ROMs.
Good luck.

You didn't even look in the Development section before you made this thread or did you (aside from the CleanROM thread)?
Hint: take a look at the pinned/sticky threads.

Check this link out. If you already on JB the latest version, then you just skip section 1 and start with section 2.

We're all on the wrong track here: the OP said the guide was too simple already -- we therefore should set ourselves to the task of making more complicated. Knowing both myself and the rest of you, this should come rather naturally, so what's taking you so long? MAKE IT HARD ALREADY!
J/K -- read the stickies. In my opinion, if you can't do it with all the info provided --which is more than enough --then read and learn a LOT more on the basics of Android before you even attempt this (suggested topic would include at least recoveries, bootloaders, nandroid backups, and, obviously, rooting). You run a significant chance to end up with an expensive paperweight if you don't. If you do not feel comfortable yet, play around with your 700 for a bit, try rooting next (little harm done, little risk involved) and then move on to the heavier stuff.
I thought I was somewhat tech savvy ... not troo however!
In order to flash a ROM which comes as second nature to most Androidians I was at a total loss initially.
Yet with concentration, YouTube, XDA, Google Play and a slowdown of tipping the wineglass I was able to crawl from the sandpit.
This has all lead to a new mountain to climb.
There's a few things I find tough like fastboot for instance and that pesky Titanium Fup , yet I'll absorb those eventually.
Dealing with Android and it's many options has definitely been a reading experience.
Good luck to all who dive in!
No doubt noobwow is struggling to find his thread now since it has been moved. :silly:
Let's hope he makes his way into this forum and recognises it.

Probably not until we've had another few days of poking fun at some innocent newbie for a bit. Poor guy still hasn't solved his problem, probably.

I found my post!
I just had problem on the "pre-requise" in the installation guide
I have already had JB on my TF700 and I knew I can just start from session 2
but I would appreciate if someone can teach me how to unlock and get the custom recovery
I know unlock tool can be downloaded from ASUS website
But what bother me is the custom recovery

go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1795156 to download the unlock apk tool (use second link). Launch the app and just follow the on screen direction, that's it. NOTE: currently Asus is having issue with their server, so the tool will failed. You just keep trying until it works. Once your device is unlock just follow the link and continue with section 2. Remember, after you install custom recovery (TWRP), you just boot into recovery and flash the Cleanrom. Cleanrom already rooted so you don't have to root your device.
Heck if did the ROM flash I'm pretty sure most anyone could figure out how to do it.
Linux\Android is a whole different animal to me so I've been studying...even bought a book about it

[Q] PurePerformances mod

Hello everyone,
I'm feeling like I'm spamming the forum, but here's another thread of me... I was just going through some random XDA stuff, and ways to improve my phone. And I found this(PurePerformances Gold Edition): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2360670
I've read all kinds of information about this, read the risks etc. And I want it! It also has a stock version available, so I was very happy! So I downloaded and... didn't know what to do. The post says ''flash the files''.
My question is: how do I do this? Copy the files to my phone? Use a special program? I've read the post completely and couldn't find anything!
If you could help me out? I'm kinda feeling a noob right now(perhaps I am ). I have had a Samsung, and I know how to use ODIN and I know how to flash with Androxyde's Flashtool. Most of the time I know what I'm doing!
Cheerios.

Yes, but it's a much better idea to learn how to do it manually. That way, you have a much better knowledge base.
When things inevitably go wrong, you will understand the process and know how to fix it.
Toolkits serve a purpose, but they breed laziness and you don't learn anything. You'll be back here posting "OMG, I brocked my phone, what do I do".
Read the stickies, learn what you're doing, then do it properly.
Please use the QUESTION and ANSWER section to ask QUESTIONS you want ANSWERED
Thread moved
Like others, I must advise against using toolkits. If something were to happen and your phone gets screwed up, you will have no idea how to fix it and surely XDA will see yet another "ZOMG such and such toolkit bricked my phone please helpppp!!!" thread. Doing stuff manually isn't nearly as difficult as it seems, and the knowledge you gain is indispensable. Try it, OP. You might surprise yourself with how easy it truly is.
