Can't get Odin on a WinXP laptop to recognize the Droid Charge. Same machine does recognize my SGS i9000, though. I'm in DL mode properly.
Any suggestions and pointers (url?) for what drivers to install/update that might help me out? I've already tried samsung drivers for USB from Samsung's site and the Fascinate forums, as well as the drivers that heimdall installs.
I've seen people talk about the Verizon USB drivers, but I haven't found them.
edit: nuts, didn't mean to post this in dev section.

I had the same issue, when you plug your phone in, not in DL mode but just as normal, a drive will open it contains verizon crap and the samsung drivers, install those 1st, then the phone will install when in DL mode
here is the odin you need here
and here is the drivers you need here
a few tips also is make sure your laptop is plugged in, use your original cable that came with the phone, and if your using vista or W7 then right click odin and click properties. Switch to windows XP service pack 3 compatibility mode and save. Then right click again and run as an administrator..
worked first try for me

Hmmm...when I plug in in normal mode, no special drive pops up; that explains why I can't see it. I'll try again. The only time I ever use Windows is for Odin, so I'm pretty rusty with this stuff.

Thanks for the links. I have that version of Odin, but not sure those are the same drivers I tried, so I'll give them a shot.
Okay, got it working.
I had USB Debugging turned on. Turned it off and the Verizon crap drive popped up and was able to install the drivers from it. Was a flakey drive mount though, kept disappearing. Driver install squawked about already being installed, but I said install anyways.
Odin 1.3 didn't recognize the phone, but Odin 1.83 did.
Was able to successfully flash the CWM and voodoo kernel. Wish I hadn't at this point...I got the successful conversion of the fs, but now everything screwed up on the phone. Force closes, apps won't open. Looks like a bunch of reinstalls in order.
Just not having much luck with this Droid Charge. Should have stuck with my Thunderbolt only. LOL

1. Try reinstalling to drivers. Also make sure you're using the same USB port as Windows can be funny about it it sometimes.
2. if download mode is being difficult, go download the Android SDK from www.android.com. Install it, run it, and only download the platform tools. When that's done, open a command promt, CD to where the plaform tools installed (either c:\program files\Android\Android-sdk\platform-tools or c:\program files (x86)\Android\Android-sdk\platform-tools ), then issue the command: adb reboot download.
3. I suggest you check the dev section for bhundven's one-click collection. Uses Java and Heimdall vs. ODIN and works easily.

Get it back into download mode, go grab a bhundven's one-click. The one-clicks utilize Heimdall vs. ODIN, which means they use open-source USB drivers instead of the proprietary Samsung drivers. See if that enables the computer to see the phone. If so, flash the one-click

That's a good idea. Some people have reported conflicts between the drivers.
Why would only Odin 1.85 see my phone in USB Debugging and not in download mode? And all other Odin verisions never see my phone, no matter what state it is in... I am at work so I will give the one click another try when I get home. I never thought of uninstalling the Samsung drivers prior to install; however, I did use the one click method to no avail. However, Heimdall's one-click was able to see my device it just kept giving me a driver error. This is so crazy it might just work.

I wish I had a good answer. ODIN's a funny animal. I've been fortunate and not had any problems with it. I am hoping you are correct - maybe it was just a driver conflict. Let me know how it goes.
didn't work...
You could try downloading a terminal app from the market. Open the terminal and type:
reboot download
See if that does it.
***Update***
Okay, so Oneclick was not working at all no matter what I did with the drivers. However, in all my tinkering with it I installed the Samsung Driver, the Open Source one, and some gadget driver as well from oneclick.
Doing this put all these drivers in my computer. Then I went into my Device manager (Win 7) and looked at my USB driver and I uninstalled everything and went to the stock win 7 usb driver. Then I plugged my phone in and my computer began searching for drivers for this device when it decided that it would be a good idea to load all three drivers at once and voila my phone was then showing up on ODIN 1.85.
I then proceeded to flash my phone with a rom, probably the wrong one considering I was coming from 2.3.5 and my phone boot looped and then soft bricked(sorry if I used these term incorrectly, noobin it).
After, some nervous moment of scouring XDA I found the god-send of a post on getting in to download mode, using odin, and flashing stock 2.3.6 - thank you Raver(I believe). When I did this, my phone magically started obeying ODIN like a devout viking and is now running 2.3.6 superbly.
Keeping with my phones newly found viking heritage, I intend to figure out how to properly root it, update the kernal and modem(not sure which one is best), get CWM, and subsequesntly put in Valhalla Black.
Seeing as though this last rendevous with flashing caused me a little scare I may hold off and wait to see what the next big update is (maybe a port ICS variant) and then go with that.
Anyway, thank you Stephen for helping me out with this and to everyone in this post.
Here's some reading for you Tytan,

PS: Unless you wanna brick your phone, do not flash anything that isn't intended for the SGH-T959V Samsung Galaxy S 4G. You're saying you wanna flash a Vibrant ROM. You can, if you want an expensive paperweight. Happy flashing!
2.3.5 may have been for vibrant...yeah I think I got lucky. I did it prior to knowing about xda.

How are you getting into download mode?
There was a post in another thread where the person apparently was using the power menu to get into download mode or maybe the adb command.
Have you tried both the old fashion volume +/- and plug in usb cable? Or the adb command?
Do you have access to another computer? Believe it or not sometimes just changing computers will make the difference.
Weird when I replied there was no posts other than the ones on the first page...oh well glad its working now.
Ok so i searched and searched and searched but found similar issues but not my issue. I was flashing a rom and it went into a boot loop. I went to get out of it and it wouldnt let me so i used a 1 touch odin download. When i plugged it in my computer recognized the phone i clicked start and it failed because my phone stopped being recognized by my computer. (i can get into download mode with no issue.) Now when i plug it in it just says usb device not recognized. I have uninstalled reinstalled drivers several times. tried multiple cables multiple computers. It also says gadget serial in the device name when its trying to auto find the driver... strange. I just need my phone back together lol. I was working on this til 3 am last night and had to run to walmart to get a cheap alarm clock to wake me up for work this morning at 6 any help is appreciated

Not to be a ****, but I am reporting this thread to the mods and asking them to move it to the q&a section.
To fix your issue, using my odin 1 click (gremlin remover), start the 1-click, then boot into dl mode. If device still isn't recognized, go into device manager right click on the device and update drivers manually. Reboot phone into dl mode and all should be well.
Also once you reinstall drivers or update them, reboot your computer. That always helps the computer recognize my phone when I have this issue. Good luck.
Try another cable and usb port.

Start Oden first then plug in the phone give Oden a second to find the phone. When the box on the upper left turn yellow then you can start. Directions work for both one click GR and regular Oden.

brighter minds than min here, but "one-click" and "odin" are different routes to the same end, aren't they? But if you start with heimdall and that fails, you will likely get the drivers issue when you try odin. I suggest opening device manager on your Win machine and removing all drivers related to the phone as storage device or whatever. Then reboot your machine. When you get to your desktop, open odin (my preferred tool), then with your phone powered down, hold vol-up+vol-down together and connect the phone to your usb cable. Win should find the drivers and load them, and odin should see your phone.
Gonna steal something from lumin30 here.
* * If you have used your phone on every USB Port and/or have no idea where all you have plugged your phone into or used ODIN or Heimdall with - Download [usbdeview-x32.zip] for 32-bit operating systems or [usbdeview-x64.zip] for 64-bit operating systems. Uninstall anything you see that has Samsung and Android related.

Hey, I managed to brick my Infuse 4G trying to get Entropy's CM9 on it. I flashed it once and it was stuck on the samsung screen like it was suppose to but when I tried to go to CWM, I would get various colors, mostly blue and orange on the top and a big grey spot in the middle. I am trying to get it back to stock but I am having issues getting my computer to recognize that I plugged my phone in, neither Hermidall nor Odin recognize when my phone is plugged in in Download mode. I have downloaded Kies. Any suggestions?
If you had read any of the numerous other posts on this you would find that Kies creates issues so get rid of it and the colors are caused by the Froyo bootloaders on your phone, something that is fixed when you get GB bootloaders.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1524081 , many thanks to qkster.
If you do everthing correctly and completely, it will get you to stock GB.
From there you can go to ICS and then if you want, to JB. Do not skip ICS and try going to JB. Hope this helps.

I tried installing the setup file in the driver and the computer still does not recognize my phone.
I have been without Windows OS for a couple of months and will be w/o for another 3 weeks, sorry.
You must uninstall kies and do not have your phone plugged in to the computer during the driver install. If I remember correctly, once you download the zip with the drivers to the computer, you have to extract them and then run the setup. Once that is done, reboot the computer and plug your phone into a usb port on your puter that you know to be working.
Should you go forward and use Heimdall, use the same port each time.
Again, I am assuming you are using Windows. With Linux there is no need to install drivers, it recognizes the phone. With mac- no idea.
Maybe try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1683036

The only thing you should have to do for Ubuntu to recognize the phone is enable usb debugging in settings on the phone and after that, enable it, most likely from your drop down menu on the phone.
Heimdall will be a .jar file - let me know if you need help getting it to open.

AT&T Infuse 4g, problem is, my computer doesn't recognize the device, but only when it is in download mode. Kies works, with phone on, and will try to update it to GB, but when the phone reboots into download mode, unsupported usb device. I have tried to make this work on 3 computers, and with 3 different cables. I have tried Odin, Kies and Heimdall. I have tried Samsung drivers and Android SDK Google USB drivers. Does anyone have any other suggestions.
It seems I may be forever stuck on Froyo...:crying:
It is a driver problem, or the phone hardware is broken. Either way, the device is not recognized and no driver is installed. Quite a few views, and no suggestions. Ugh...
Anyone?
I can't say about Odin 'cause I haven't used it in a while.
With Heimdall, sometimes a pc will recognize it right away..others may require several tries, different USB port, or USB cable or several reboots of the PC and retries.
Night before last I took mine back to stock again. My one-clicks were not seeing my phone or offering drivers. I opened my Heimdall suite went to the driver folder ran Zandig to install drivers and all was good again. If you swap between Odin, Heimdall, and or Kies you will probably have to change the driver with every program change. They each use different driver in same location

unfortunately, the problem has gotten worse. I have , quite possibly bricked my phone. (I thought it was "unbrickable"). I have tried all the known methods (to me), but every time I start the phone, I just get some randomly colored screen.

First uninstall and reinstall the drivers for your phone. Get them from Samsung site just to be safe. also try redownloading odin from a different website, could be a bad download. and 'm assuming you have a good USB cable and good USB Ports.

My problem is, my windows 7 computers do not see the phone at all, no matter which cable/USB port I use. No beep, no trying to install drivers, no nothing. I'm assuming that unless windows sees the device to begin with... I won't be able to use kies or Odin or heimdall or adb or anything right?

Drago, thanks for trying to help me, can't tell you how much I appreciate it bro. Now when it comes to windows, I'm no noob, I actually own a small business going out to people's houses and fixing their computer/WiFi/printer problems. So device manager, yeah I tried "scanning for new hardware" tried and tried, checked and checked, restarted, tried safe mode, tried using different administrator account, nothing. That's when I got this gut sinking feeling, what if something is wrong with the USB port on the phone.
It's a SM-S820L, galaxy core prime. No sound when I plug it in, nothing shows up in 'my computer', no tuh noon sound, and I remember back when the phone was working like normal, I tried to get a picture or two off of it by plugging it in while it was on, I remember it showed up in windows no problem, even without the drivers from Samsung installed. Now nothing happens, even though it says download mode.
I still need your help Drago, don't forget about me

alright well you have one of 3 issues then honestly.
1. phone USB port like you said
2. the PC/laptop USB or..
3.cable or driver issues.
make sure your completly uninstall the phones drivers in device manager while the phone is plugged into the PC. next unplug the phone, restart, reinstall actuall samsung drivers, than try pluggin in again. use a known working USB port also.
sorry I can't give you an answer that's the best I can think of, let me know how it goes!

You can try redownloading Odin and also running Odin as an administrator, that's been the case one in a while. lastly uninstall and reinstalling drivers could help. If this does'nt do it sorry, I'm all out of ideas.
