[Q] A cure for insomnia (and one for narcolepsy)? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Last night my Nexus S could hardly sleep at all, poor baby.
The power usage graphs show it was almost constantly "active" since it came off the charger some 20h ago, same for "wifi". Normal behavour was for both bars to more or less follow the "screen active" one, except for sporadic bursts for background sync and such.
There's nothing suspicious in the list of power hungry tasks, except for Android-System at the top, which doesn't tell me much.
...
Now it's died when 5 mins ago the battery had 30% left. No audible indicator or anything so I don't know if it's crashed or shut down. (EDIT: It just happened again today - it just shuts down on its own.) Something's not right ...
Any help is appreciated.

Sorry, it almost seems like you have a hardware problem. If after charging and booting again you still have the problem, post back here, but you might end up needing to exchange the phone under the warranty.

At the moment I'm suspecting Latitude. Signing out and rebooting returns everything to normal. But not using Latitude isn't a long-term solution, either. It certainly doesn't misbehave on our other phones.

Does this happen to anyone else?

When I am working on something, my phone vibrates then it return to the home screen occasionally. It's bit annoying when it happens, I wanna know if someone else having this issue?
I remember hearing that it is a rare hardware glitch, although I may be wrong. It may also be because you accidently pressed the home key.
I had the same problem with mine. The home and back buttons would randomly freak out and act as if repeatedly pressed.
Took it in for a replacement and the new one has had no problems since (~5 days ago).
I also noticed in my case that the battery life seems to be much better. Would get about 12-16 hours on a charge (yes I did a full battery drain to set the chip) with moderate usage. On my new one, got about 40 hours on the first charge and 36 on the second with a fair amount of usage (email, a few hours of pandora, installing apps, and a few random voice calls).

Okay, I think I will get mine replaced. Thanks for the reply.
I just got my phone replaced this afternoon. So far no home screen glitch (~5 hour).
what firmware's are your phone's showing? I'm wondering if ATT put any updates on the phones now vice the first ones that were released. If so, I'll turn my phone in and see if I can't get some sort of improved battery life. I've noticed that a cell call really does kill my battery as well.
Crank
Mine loaded up the browser today and was on porno sites, i have rarely even used the browser and for that to pop up was weird. Also alot of my att apps like to start themselves when the phone is in sleep mode, weird. Has anyone else had a really bad signal where it used to be great, im coming from a blackberry bold 9000 and that thing had great reception, this one is best at mediocre.

Quick battery drain & constant data being sent since 1.78 OTA

Hi,
I've got an HTC One S since a few weeks (got it with the 1.57 FW I think). It's a stock one, not from a carrier. No branding.
The battery life was great, 2 to 3 days with normal use.
But yesterday evening I proceeded to the OTA update and since then, trouble began
Battery life is much, much lower. After 12 hours standing on my desk in the office, I got 10% remaining!
Anytime I switch the screen ON, I see there is some data being sent (or received) because the "arrows" are full. If I check in system panel lite, there's always 1 or 2 kb/s of traffic.
Also, the phone is a bit warm, quite often.
Has anyone else noticed this? That's rather annoying :/
Could be faulty? I have the same phone with no carrier or branding and not had any problems at all.
Like faulty hardware? Seems unlikely to me since it worked well with 1.57. Also, sending data isn't hardware related
Here are some details.
In Mobile usage, just for today (less than 24h)
"Media" has used 13MB of background data
"Android OS" has used 5MB, also background
Android OS gives no more details. Media is told to include "Download manager" "DRM protected content storage" "Media storage" and "Downloads"
This sounds like a lot of background data :/
Try an app called Badass Battery monitor. It should tell you what's eating your battery.

I have to say, this phone, at least mines, seems to have a pretty bi polar battery. It's got a case of ADHD.
For example, just the other day, I had the phone fully charged when I awoke at 9am, after playing Temple Run, surfing the web, using GPS, streaming and listening to music, playing more Temple Run, fiddling around with the OS, checking emails, sending texts, talking on the phone a bit, downloading apps, with about 25-30% brightness, I ended up with 18% battery remaining after a good 11 hours of very heavy use. I was quite pleased, considering the inordinate amount of usage I had with the phone all day.
(BTW, I use Juice Defender, which has helped tons in reducing battery drainage for almost every phone I've owned in the past 3 months, including the One S)
Yesterday, I had the phone charged at 100% when I awoke at 9am, with a little bit of use, by 12am, I had 63% remaining, same brightness, but with much much less use then the day prior. By the time 3pm hit, I was at about 30%, and by 5pm, it was drained to 18%, mostly on standby. By my estimation, that's 8 hours of usage, same brightness levels as the day before, using Juice Defender, but with much much less fiddling around with pretty much everything on the device.
I went ahead and disabled Juice Defender today to see if it would make a difference, and the battery actually got a bit worse, so I went ahead and re-enabled it and it immediately improved.
So I'm a bit perplexed, I haven't gotten any official updates, still running on the original stock build, but ultimately, I guess this is what is too be expected with an early build. Hopefully future updates WILL fix these issues and not hinder them more. Granted it's still much better then my HTC Amaze and Galaxy Nexus, which drained 4% the moment I took them off charger.
Thanks for your input, I'll check again today how the phone goes.
I played with all the settings and menus yesterday, and found something strange. In the "downloads" app, there was a "system update" download. That's quite normal since I downloaded and applied the OTA the day before. But it was referred as "ongoing", like it was still downloading a part of the OTA zip file AFTER I applied it (and rebooted a couple of times)
In phone settings, about, updates, it was also written "ongoing"
Now this is over (I don't know why and how) and the network usage seems back to normal. I'll try today to see how the battery drain is
Anyway, it's s strange the phone was still downloading the update zip file after having applied it. AND that it was downloading it on the 3G at a very lowered bitrate (like background) while I downloaded it on the wifi the day before
Anyway...
The battery life of my One S seems to have declined as well since the update. Before the update my battery lasted 2 days easily with moderate usage. Now I have 20-30% left at the end of the day from a full charge since 9am. This is with very light usage (mostly on standby from 9 to 5).
I did turn on best wifi performance recently so I just to turned that off to see if it helps but I really doubt that.
Hello guys, I have same problem, but my phone wasting energy on "phone radio" process, just look at screens below. I tried using stock Rom with last update, trickdroid, and now it happend on leedroid v.2 . Btw I changed 4 micro sim cards with several providers, but no result. I really need help with this issue, because my battery draining very very
fast...
Thank you

I had a similar problem a few days ago, using Lee´s ROM.
I noticed that the drain had something to do with autosync. As soon as I turned off autosync (leaving mobile internet on) drainage went back to normal.
I still don´t know what caused this since I only had the google account, weather and dropbox installed.
Anyway, after doing a fresh install, the problems seem to have gone.
Of course I can´t be completely certain of it until some more days of testing/usage.
I also noticed quite a few problems since the latest OTA update.
Not only does the battery drain fast, the phone also feels extremely hot when browsing on 3G.
The phone does cool down pretty quickly when turning off 3G but it feels like I burned my hands
Here are a few screenshots.

I also experienced weird things when connected to EDGE (2.75G).
3G (HSPA) coverage on BASE (KPN) sucks in Belgium
Look at the video below for more details.
Has anyone else experienced this yet?
http://youtu.be/3g8FLpWDAYM
I also contacted HTC about this issue and they recommended a hard reset.
Unfortunately this doesn't help at all, I still get these weird glitches
mattionline, can you get a logcat when the phone's doing this weird stuff? It looks like the Home button is being pressed repeatedly and if logcat confirms it then it's probably a hardware problem.

Do you need root to make a logcat ? My phone is not rooted and I'm not planning to do it. How can this be a hardware problem ? I never had this problem before. I'm sure that it's a software bug.

I just fixed someone else phone that had the exact same symptoms. In the end I narrowed down the problem to one of his weather apps.
He had a live wallpaper that reflected the current weather, weather on his lock screen and a beautiful widgets weather thing. I never did figure out exactly which one it was I just turned off all there and told him he was crazy.
I don't know if it's something "weather" related for you but it maybe it will help.

you don't need root, just enable usb debugging in development options and connect the phone to your pc. You need to have the android sdk installed.
Sup guys , some of you don't seem to realize that there are many reasons why your battery drains, what you might think is, "quickly". A few tips to keep minimal battery out put...1 keep brightness down, the screen itself sucks juice probably the most. 2 check your apps, some apps send and receive data and/or are kept running in the background. You might have to enable/disable setting on shove apps. 3 widgets, widgets like battery meters, CPU meters, things like this constantly refresh to keep real time info. That also eats up alot of juice . 4 Turn off WiFi or any other thing like that when your not using it. WiFi continually sucks nice. Lastly, invest in some app that will help you close apps. Basically, tweek everything you might think that the os can run without. The less your CPU has to do, the more juce you save.

This made me lol hard.
Best advice ever.
But yeah, on the 1.0 version of Leedroid I had quite some drain, too.
When I turned off autosync it went back to normale. I only had my google account, dropbox (with syncing off) and the weather thingy set up and never figured out which one was resposible.
After installing Lee´s 2.0 ROM everything is fine.
I suppose there really is something wrong with the autosync and maybe with the weather stuff in particular.
My problem didn't go away with stopping auto sync, even without it, I had a constant data flow
Anyway, I rebooted the phone twice and the issue was gone.
It happened again a few days later, after the phone did shut down because of low battery. I put it on charger and turned it on, then, I noticed the 3G arrows were always on. After I unplugged it from the charger the battery went down in 10 hours. After a reboot, problem gone...
Since then, nothing...
And please note than when the problem is here, it's media and android os using a lot of data
I have been having one S problems too - I am on my second phone after the first one became reliably unresponsive every time I turned on mobile data. More relevant to this discussion, my battery died shockingly last night. Normally it drains at a few percent an hour when I am not using it (i.e. when asleep!) but I woke this morning to find it totally dead - that is 30% plus gone in 5 hours without it being in use.

A unique battery issue

I have searched the interwebs high and low for this one, but I haven't found another with this issue.
Phone: One XL, ATT - 4.0.3 - CleanRom 4.1 - 1.85
Was browsing using chrome this morning with my battery at 48%. Right before my eyes it flashed the "0% battery - plug in" alert for a split second before it powered off and literally had no battery.
Furthermore, this seems to have been happening 1-2 times a week for a couple months. I keep waking up in the morning to a phone w/ 0% power, despite going to bed with somewhere between 50-100% charge.
I have also experienced the problem where I hold the phone in my hand and the are a near the antennae/camera gets very warm and my battery drops at almost a percent a second until it's dead. This occurs even with Wi-Fi turned off (which I tested due to "scanning" being the perma-status of wifi when the antennae area got warm).
Coming from every iPhone generation, I really like this phone , but the battery issues are pretty substantial. (worse, dare I say than the annoying death-grip apple tried denying was even real)
---------------
Lastly, each time, the battery meter appropriately reflects the drop of power to 0% from 50%+. I have tried reformatting phone to default RUU, upgraded to 1.85, tried newer Cleanrom, everything, no cigar. If anybody has any advice, I'd really appreciate it. I'd also be happy to provide more info if I can.
Thank You!

Pulling the "I had an iPhone, and it was better" card is pointless, and is only going to win you enemies here.
I'd say close to half the people I know with iPhones have had battery issues, or other severe hardware issues, at some point.
Have you tried flashing a different radio? If there is a reception issue, it can be killing your battery quickly searching for the network, even while connected to WiFi.
Also, posting a screenshot of your battery usage (particulary the "large" battery graph called "History details") for us to look at may be useful to help diagnose the problem.

This pretty much sums up my issue. Guy just went to ATT to replace his.
Also, I'm not pulling the iPhone is better card. It isn't. Period. This phone is amazing and android is vastly superior to iOS. I hate programming in objective C anyway and though the NDK isn't exactly straightforward at least I can run native code. If anything, my complaining about iPhone's crappy hardware problems should gain me praise and camaraderie. I left iPhone and blindly made the leap to an android phone for a reason. "anything has to be better than this (except blackberry o.0)"
Would hate to try and exchange this phone with ATT, given that mine is rooted and unlocked. I'm expecting resistance, and I haven't done my homework to see if I can walk out of ATT with the latest version replacement and still unlock it. Also, I have a tiny chip on the bottom. Don't know if they'll replace it.
Edit: Also, no issues with reception (4g LTE all day). Haven't tried flashing a new radio, but that may help with the second issue. The battery just plummeting to 0% though makes absolutely no sense.

You're right, it doesn't make sense for the actual battery voltage to instantaneously drop like that. Steep line yes, vertical, I don't think its really possible. The vertical drop is likely an incorrect battery meter reading, and the phone correcting itself.
I've seen this once on my phone, and a factory reset cleared it up (never saw it again). Same with at least one other use on here. But the fact that you've flashed some ROMs and ran the RUU should have accomplished the same.
I'd still encourage you to post a screen shot of the battery usage (for several hours of use), as looking at the battery grapsh versus the bars for network signal, awake, etc. might shed some light.

I had hoped a factory reset would solve it for me as well, but once it started happening nothing would stop it I will update the thread the next time it happens then. Just got off the phone with ATT and they'll exchange it if it doesn't have physical damage, but the small chip out of the bottom could possibly deem it out of warranty, in which case they charge the full price of the phone (509$)!

From what other XDA users have posted, I don't think one small ding will void your warranty, if its in good shape otherwise. Its when people try to send a phone in that is pretty beat up, or has a cracked screen or water damage, and want a warranty replacement, that they get denied.
Been having the exact same issue with my Rogers One X recently. The problem comes and goes... I woke up and found it dead twice just like you described. Sometimes it even dropped 20% of battery in a flash second.
I'm on Clean Rom V SP1. Just flashed BeastMode kernel a couple days ago and it's normal so far for two days... Just a note (it might not even be relevant), I had to use flashlight for a longer than usual period once. Not sure if the aggressive draw of battery screwed up the battery's voltage meter and thus causing this issue..

Hope new version of cleanrom works for you. It's a great rom. I haven't used the flashlight beyond turning it on and going "spiffy" and turning it back off, so I doubt that contributed to it. Mine started out every once in a while, then just happened more and more frequently. I don't want to leave my phone charging all night. Think I'm going to try and exchange at ATT today.

Yup, I understand perfectly what it looks like, and I've seen it myself. I want to see a screenshot of the OP's phone, not random other people. In particular, the screen "History details" accessed when you tap the graph, which shows bar graphs for Mobile network signal, Awake time, etc.
It also seems the OP is talking about 2 completely different issues. One is the vertical drop in the %battery graph (which is probably just a metering error). The other is a steep (but not vertical) battery drainage including the phone possibly overheating. I'm more interested to see the screenshot for that case.

Yes, I do mention two issues. The main one I address here is the vertical drop. And the above poster is right, that's exactly what it looks like when the battery dies. If (when) it happens again though I'll include the more detailed graph.
The secondary issue though, some have speculated is a result of the phone losing and then regaining 4g lte signal. Not sure about that one though, as it happens late at night for me. The one night I left my phone in the charger is when I discovered it in the morning. My phone was at 100% charge when I fell asleep, but when I woke it was at 80% and was very warm. It was using more power than the charger was providing, it seems, and that is when I experienced the rapid drop of a percent every second-ish after I took it off the charger. The wi-fi status was also set to "scanning" the entire time the phone was discharging until I rebooted it once it hit 10%. The issue stopped and the phone cooled off. Charged as advertised afterwards.
---Edit
Also, I went to the ATT store and since it was a core store they weren't familiar with exchanges. I got the manager though and had them take a peek at the phone and made certain they noted in my account that it's in good condition (they didn't notice care about the chips, I suppose). Replacement will be here in 6-10 days, but it will be a refurb (which surprised me). Hopefully I won't get two with the same issue.

Could be. The "History details" graph indicates data network strength, as well as dropouts (amongst other things). So that is the one I want to see (not the graph for vertical drop).

I've actually had this issue happen to me about once a week, and I haven't figured it out.
I used to think it was from Google Maps or some rogue app eating battery, but I've really been careful about leaving them running and it still occurs.
I'll also try and grab a battery graph next time, but it literally looks like a complete instantaneous jump from 70% or whatever to 0%.

Not sure if this has anything to do with it, but I have had "auto-brightness" turned off since I made this post and it hasn't happened since. My phone might also have known that I ordered a replacement, so now it's trying to be on its best behavior.

As I've already mentioned, the vertical jump is likely not related to any actual battery usage (such as a rogue app). Its probably just a metering error, and the vertical jump is the meter trying to correct itself. If the issue persists, the only solution that I have seen that helps is a factory reset.

You're probably right. The other possibility is a battery failure... I hope not. I've definitely reset battery stats in recovery but I haven't done a factory reset recently. Next time I flash I will.

I doubt its a battery failure. I'm no expert on batteries or anything. But I would think that it would be impossible for the battery voltage to just drop to zero. Where would all the energy go? It would at least have to be expelled in a burst of heat or go to ground, or something. Conservation of energy says its got to go somewhere, it just can't vanish. That's what leads me to believe its just a metering error, not a real life event.
As for clearing battery stats, it really does nothing. It just clears the stats displayed on the battery usage screen, which also happens when you turn the phone off, or charge it fully. The myth of clearing battery stats was debunked a while ago: http://www.xda-developers.com/android/google-engineer-debunks-myth-wiping-battery-stats-does-not-improve-battery-life/
Either way it's really hard to tell. If it's a battery failure issue, then capacity won't be reliable. In conjunction with a metering problem, then the voltage is not really dropping, it's just reading much lower than it thought it was... which signals the phone to power down.
I'm definitely going to factory reset soon when I flash, and see what happens.

[Q] battery drained from 100 to 80 in one hour

SHi all, I'm on at&t, no rooting or anything, in NYC and ive been experiencing really odd battery drain in the past day. Ive had my phone for roughly a week now. Ive been searching these forums for battery saving tips since day one so yes, I turned off auto brightness, etc. This drain just happened while I'm on WiFi, Ive had 'mobile network' off since I woke up too. The only odd thing is that my mobile network signal is always in yellow, never in green. (im in an LTE area) could that probably be the reason for the battery drain, even though I turned 'mobile network' off?
I'm posting from my one x right now so I can't upload a pic of my screen. Probably just gonna upload to imgur and post the link here later..
Edit: can't add links lol.
Screen on time is 1h 8 minutes, taking 63%
Internet is 22 minutes, taking 20%
^ this was all taken just now, it's at 64% right now
Perhaps you could try a hard reset. I was having issues unrelated to yours with a brand new AT&T OX but a hard reset solved them. It's annoying that I had to do this considering I only owned the phone for 2 days, but at least it's working now.
I can go 16+ hours with WiFi on and no power-save features enabled so if a hard reset doesn't work, then maybe you should exchange it for a new one.
P.S.You can take a screenshot by holding the power+home buttons.

install better battery stats to find out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
It's probably an app that you downloaded. I had a similar issue where my battery would be sapped very quickly. Turns out that an app called "Line" was actively keeping my phone in a wake status which killed my battery. If there is nothing physically wrong with the phone, you'll have to troubleshoot your apps one by one.

Lol, well I guess my suggestion was a little extreme.
Hi, thanks for all the responses - think i may have to do a hard reset. The longest my battery has ever went was probably 13 hours with normal usage and i'm a typical person so it's not like my normal usage is being on it all the time. My screen time is always a lot lower(1 hour to 1 hr 30) than everyone elses' in this board yet i still have lower battery AND i'm on stock.
i don't have any obscure apps really, just angry birds, dropbox, groupme, groupon, netflix, word search. i will still try to see if any app is sapping my battery.
right now i'm at 88% at 1 hr 30 min on battery. this is off only 8 minutes of internet, and the rest just idling with the screen off. Is that normal for everyone?
You ask questions and look for advice but it seems that you refuse to accept answers and heed suggestions.
Again: better battery stats main function is to give you a very detailed overview of your battery usage and what keeps your phone awake or wakes it up (ie wakelocks) So go read that thread and install the app and it'll answer all your queries. Amen

[Q] Battery Drain

I realize there are several threads about battery life, and I apologize if this has already been posted, but I'm in full-on battery drain mode right now and am having a crisis. Is there a thread that addresses this or a quick fix? Any suggestions? I've dropped 38% in an hour with 20 minutes screen time. It's been great for the week leading up to today. I've already powered down the phone. I could stop Google Now, but this hasn't been an issue all week. Not sure why it randomly would start one now. Thoughts? All help appreciated.
Haven't logged in in a few years but account is behaving as of it's a new one. I used the original Galaxy Tab 10.5 boards frequently.
Screen shot attached.

I would think you have a app thats constantly running looking for GPS or syncing data.
Thats with just over 2 hours screen on time and GPS being used constantly for 20 min on my run.
Also if your in poor signal area or roaming a lot you'll burn through battery.
Yeah. I'm not sure what's going on. I decided to clear the cache for Google Now. I also turned the phone off and am powering it to 100%. Once it reaches a full charge, I am going to remove the battery, hoping for some kind of reset. I'll then let it fully load for a few minutes before checking on it.
Like I said, it was working perfectly for over a week, but for some reason, it went into battery drain freefall mode. I thought it was aggressively falling upon waking this morning because it had 98% before I went to bed last night and when I looked at it after using it for an hour this morning, it was around 60ish%. I fast-charged it back to 98% before heading out the door for an appointment and turned on bluetooth so that I could listen to music in my vehicle. When I got out of my appointment an hour later, it was back down in the 60s and I was totally confused. The music had been shut off and the screen was not on. The back of the phone felt pretty warm too.
I agree. Some process must be running endlessly. When I had this issue with a G2, I was able to pinpoint it as having something to do with Google Play Music and was able to fix that by altering some settings. In this case, it looks like the culprit is either Google Now and / or Android, but as I said before, it doesn't make sense to me that it would start happening out of the blue like this when it wasn't occurring before. Usually screen is (understandably) my biggest battery drain. I don't recall seeing Android responsible for over 20% like that before, outperforming the screen that much in the battery drainage department.
I'll report back once it is fully charged and I get a feel for whether the issue went away.

You can also try downloading CPU spy, it's a app that'll show if your device is going into deep sleep properly. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bvalosek.cpuspy.realgpp
Way-too-early impressions are that it is back to normal. I have no idea what happened. I read in the Battery Life thread a little bit ago that some were suspecting that flip cases have caused some issues. That might be relevant here as I do have a flip case even though it didn't give me any problems. I was, however, messing around with it last night because I purchased a Scosche Magic Mount and was trying to determine where to install the large plate only to discover that it didn't fit properly behind the flip case backing. This fiddling caused me to pull the battery and take the case off, among other things. I'm wondering whether the case was properly re-installed.
Another possibility is that I use UCCW for a Google Now widget and while it has worked perfectly with my previous two phones, with the Note Edge, it doesn't appear to activate the Google Now screen even though it acts as if it is listening for you. Even though I terminated Google Now when that happened this morning, I guess it could have played some kind of role.

Thanks! I'll check it out!
So far, I have lost 4% in 20 minutes. While that's not "great," that's about where I was. I don't use powersaving mode and use my device pretty moderately. I can usually get through most of the day without a charge.
